A Comparison Of Mosquito Consumption And Prey Selection Between Least Chub (Iotichthys Phlegethontis) And Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia Affinis), Eric J. Billman, Eric J. Wagner, Ronney E. Arndt
A Comparison Of Mosquito Consumption And Prey Selection Between Least Chub (Iotichthys Phlegethontis) And Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia Affinis), Eric J. Billman, Eric J. Wagner, Ronney E. Arndt
Western North American Naturalist
We compared mosquito consumption and prey selection between least chub (Iotichthys phlegethontis) and western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) to determine the potential of least chub as an indigenous replacement for mosquito control in Utah. Mosquito consumption was compared between the 2 species in 2 experiments. The first tested consumption at 3 ratios of pupae and larvae (Culex sp.; 1:3, 3:4, and 1:1), and the second tested consumption at varying densities of larvae (967 larvae · m−3, 1354 larvae · m−3, and 2258 larvae · m−3 [30, 42, and 70 larvae per …

Intrarectal infection between men who have sex with men represents a predominant form of human immunodefi ciency virus (HIV) transmission in developed countries. Currently there are no adequate small animal models that recapitulate intrarectal HIV transmission. Here we demonstrate that human lymphocytes generated in situ from hematopoietic stem cells reconstitute the gastrointestinal tract of humanized mice with human CD4+ T cells rendering them susceptible to intrarectal HIV transmission. HIV infection after a single intrarectal inoculation results in systemic infection with depletion of CD4+ T cells in gut-associated lymphoid tissue and other pathologic sequela that closely mimics those observed in HIV …

Hiv/Aids In Pakistan: The Battle Begins, Mohammad A. Rai, Haider J. Warraich, Syed H. Ali, Vivek R. Nerurkar
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Pakistan, the second most populous Muslim nation in the world, has started to finally experience and confront the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The country had been relatively safe from any indigenous HIV cases for around two decades, with most of the infections being attributable to deported HIV positive migrants from the Gulf States. However, the virus finally seems to have found a home-base, as evidenced by the recent HIV outbreaks among the injection drug user community. Extremely high-risk behavior has also been documented among Hijras (sex workers) and long-distance truck drivers. The weak government response coupled with the extremely distressing social demographics …

Teaching Outbreak Preparedness In The Emergency Medicine Clerkship: An Innovative Approach, Larissa S. May
Teaching Outbreak Preparedness In The Emergency Medicine Clerkship: An Innovative Approach, Larissa S. May
E-Learning Modules
Clinicians should be competent at contagious disease outbreak detection and management. Given the threat of emerging infectious diseases and biowarfare, there is a need to develop instructional methods on these topics. We have created a case-based exercise addressing sentinel case recognition, reporting, and containment. The workshop, conducted for medical students during their emergency medicine clerkship, incorporates the core competencies of systems-based practice, practice-based learning, and patient care. The workshop is held in a hospital conference room with the availability of internet, telephone, and other resources, simulating "real life." A hypothetical case of Ebola presenting to an emergency department is outlined. …

Presidential candidate and senator Barack Obama visited Cleveland, speaking at the Cuyahoga Community College's gym on Monday evening. On February 26, Emily Todd, Wooster alum '03, lectured in the Kauke tower on, "Role and Identity in Grassroots NGOs: Personal Lessons from Nicaragua." The final lecture of the Great Decision's Lecture Series was given by Professor Akwasi P. Osei of Delaware State University. An Artificial Immune System-Inspired Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithm With Application To The Detection Of Distributed Computer Network Intrusions, Charles R. Haag
An Artificial Immune System-Inspired Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithm With Application To The Detection Of Distributed Computer Network Intrusions, Charles R. Haag
Theses and Dissertations
Today's predominantly-employed signature-based intrusion detection systems are reactive in nature and storage-limited. Their operation depends upon catching an instance of an intrusion or virus after a potentially successful attack, performing post-mortem analysis on that instance and encoding it into a signature that is stored in its anomaly database. The time required to perform these tasks provides a window of vulnerability to DoD computer systems. Further, because of the current maximum size of an Internet Protocol-based message, the database would have to be able to maintain 25665535 possible signature combinations. In order to tighten this response cycle within storage constraints, …
Patient Advocacy Resource Manual, Jeff Hope
Patient Advocacy Resource Manual, Jeff Hope
Student Organizations
Patient Advocacy began as a freestanding group, formed by medical students who wanted to help homeless men and women with their psychosocial needs, such as finding a job, obtaining health insurance, and joining a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. Later, we merged with Jeff HOPE to form an organization that can address all of the needs of our patients. This combination of energies and talents has proven quite beneficial, especially because our patients often need services that are beyond the scope of what the Jeff HOPE medical clinic can provide. Thus, one of our most important responsibilities is to link …

Variables influencing the risk of dissemination and outcome of Cryptococcus neoformans infection were assessed in 111 organ transplant recipients with cryptococcosis in a prospective, multicenter, international study. Sixty-one percent (68/111) of the patients had disseminated infection. The risk of disseminated cryptococcosis was significantly higher for liver transplant recipients (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 6.65; P= .048). The overall mortality rate at 90 days was 14% (16/111). The mortality rate was higher in patients with abnormal mental status (P = .023), renal failure at baseline (P = .028), fungemia (P = .006), and disseminated infection (P = .035) and was lower in …

Mobile Element-Based Forensic Genomics, David A. Ray, Jerilyn A. Walker, Mark A. Batzer
Faculty Publications
Mobile elements are commonly referred to as selfish repetitive DNA sequences. However, mobile elements represent a unique and underutilized group of molecular markers. Several of their characteristics make them ideally suited for use as tools in forensic genomic applications. These include their nature as essentially homoplasy-free characters, they are identical by descent, the ancestral state of any insertion is known to be the absence of the element, and many mobile element insertions are lineage specific. In this review, we provide an overview of mobile element biology and describe the application of certain mobile elements, especially the SINEs and other retrotransposons, …
