Assessment Of The Impact Of Various Ionospheric Models On High Frequency Signal Raytracing, Joshua T. Werner Mar 2007

Assessment Of The Impact Of Various Ionospheric Models On High Frequency Signal Raytracing, Joshua T. Werner

Theses and Dissertations

An assessment of the impact of various ionospheric models on high-frequency (HF) signal raytracing is presented. Ionospheric refraction can strongly affect the propagation of HF signals. Consequently, Department of Defense missions such as over-the-horizon RADAR, HF communications, and geo-location all depend on an accurate specification of the ionosphere. Five case studies explore ionospheric conditions ranging from quiet conditions to solar flares and geomagnetic storms. It is shown that an E layer by itself can increase an HF signal’s ground range by over 100 km, stressing the importance of accurately specifying the lower ionosphere. It is also shown that the GPSII …

Preach To Reach: Seven Characteristics Of Effective Evangelistic Preaching, Alan Ehler Mar 2007

Preach To Reach: Seven Characteristics Of Effective Evangelistic Preaching, Alan Ehler

Doctor of Ministry

Although studies continually show that Americans consider themselves spiritual, church attendance has continued to decline. A common reason people give for not attending church is that the sermons are boring and irrelevant. Far too few pastors effectively communicate in a way unchurched people understand, relate to and connect with in their sermons. In order to address this problem we will propose seven traits that characterize preaching that effectively reaches unbelievers and leads them to lasting faith in Jesus Christ: I) biblical, Christ-centered content, 2) relevant to unbelieving listeners, preached with 3) persuasive appeal, using 4) engaging illustrations and 5) dynamic …

Combining Historical Research And Narrative Inquiry To Create Chronicles And Narratives, Richard A. Wilson Mar 2007

Combining Historical Research And Narrative Inquiry To Create Chronicles And Narratives, Richard A. Wilson

The Qualitative Report

Stories about the Idaho State Library, chronicles and narratives, are reported in my doctoral dissertation (Wilson, 2005). The chronicles, reconstructed from documents and records, provided a presentation of the people, events, and activities to frame the stories. The narratives, excerpted from interviews, provided the rich description and unique perspectives of the two living State Librarians who directed the agency between 1962 and 2005. The focus of this paper is a presentation and discussion of the use of historical research and narrative inquiry to create chronicles and narratives.

The Effect Of Local Life Circumstances On Victimization Of Drug‐Involved Women, Gaylene Armstrong, Marie L. Griffin Feb 2007

The Effect Of Local Life Circumstances On Victimization Of Drug‐Involved Women, Gaylene Armstrong, Marie L. Griffin

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

While numerous studies have examined female victimization in the general population, fewer studies have focused specifically on high‐risk populations such as drug‐involved females. Of the existing literature, the Lifestyle Exposure and/or Routine Activities theory is frequently used to examine the antecedent conditions and correlates of female victimization. This study employs a dynamic modeling approach to examine the effect of short‐term change (i.e., monthly) in local life circumstances on female victimization within a criminogenic population. Results demonstrated that risk of victimization increased in months a woman was in a relationship, lived with a significant other and/or her children, engaged in criminogenic …

At War With The Eclectics: Mapping Pragmatism In Contemporary Legal Analysis, Justin Desautels-Stein Feb 2007

At War With The Eclectics: Mapping Pragmatism In Contemporary Legal Analysis, Justin Desautels-Stein

ExpressO

This article has two primary goals. The first is descriptive, and seeks to respond to what appears to be an increasing degree of confusion over the word “pragmatism,” especially as it is used in a good deal of legal literature. This descriptive aim begins by separating out three general categories of pragmatism: (1) the so-called “everyday” pragmatism familiar to the American vernacular, (2) the classical philosophy of the early pragmatist authors like William James and John Dewey, and (3) pragmatism as understood in the context of law. The majority of the article is subsequently concerned with exploring this last category, …

Quality In Early Childhood Education: Assessing Early Child Development - A Holistic Approach For Ages 3-6 Years, Seema Lasi, Sanober Nadeem, Irum Fatima

Book Chapters / Conference Papers

Early childhood lays strong foundations for adulthood. Experiences, positive or negative, during this period have long-lasting effects. The purpose of this paper is to underscore the need for an integrated approach towards early years, particularly pre-school period (3 to 6 years). The article also introduces to ‘Record of Early Childhood Growth and Development’ developed by Human Development Programme of Aga Khan University to measure holistic child development.

Effect Of Surrounding Point Charges On The Density Functional Calculations Of NiXOX Clusters (X = 4–12), Evgueni B. Kadossov, Karen J. Gaskell, Marjorie Langell Feb 2007

Effect Of Surrounding Point Charges On The Density Functional Calculations Of NiXOX Clusters (X = 4–12), Evgueni B. Kadossov, Karen J. Gaskell, Marjorie Langell

Marjorie A. Langell Publications

Embedded NixOx clusters (x = 4–12) have been studied by the density-functional method using compensating point charges of variable magnitude to calculate the ionic charge, bulk modulus, and lattice binding energy. The computations were found to be strongly dependent on the value of the surrounding point charge array and an optimum value could be found by choosing the point charge to reproduce the experimentally observed Ni–O lattice parameter. This simple, empirical method yields a good match between computed and experimental data, and even small variation from the optimum point charge value produces significant deviation between computed …

Venturing Into The Minefield: Turkish Liberal Historiography And The Armenian Genocide, Bedross Der Matossian Jan 2007

Venturing Into The Minefield: Turkish Liberal Historiography And The Armenian Genocide, Bedross Der Matossian

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Historiography normally refers to the act of writing history, the collective writings of history and the history of such activities over time. I This chapter addresses the collective writings of history by a group of scholars of "Turkish origin," mainly deriving from a tradition ofleftist sentiments. What is particular about this group of Turkish liberal historians is that they provide an alternative historical interpretation2 of a specific historical event that is otherwise accepted by the official Turkish history (resmi tarih) as an historical travesty.1 Historical events, which are conventionally regarded as the "building bricks of history," are composed into a …

Gardner, Orjan Gustafsson, Koh Harada, Anthony F. Michaels, Michiel Rutgers Van Der Loeff, Manmohan Sarin, Deborah K. Steinberg, Thomas Trull

Journal of Marine Research

This review provides an assessment of sediment trap accuracy issues by gathering data to address trap hydrodynamics, the problem of zooplankton "swimmers," and the solubilization of material after collection. For each topic, the problem is identified, its magnitude and causes reviewed using selected examples, and an update on methods to correct for the potential bias or minimize the problem using new technologies is presented. To minimize hydrodynamic biases due to flow over the trap mouth, the use of neutrally buoyant sediment traps is encouraged. The influence of swimmers is best minimized using traps that limit zooplankton access to the sample …

Foreword: Making Sense Of An Eighteenth-Century Constitution In A Twenty-First-Century World, Mark A. Graber Jan 2007

Foreword: Making Sense Of An Eighteenth-Century Constitution In A Twenty-First-Century World, Mark A. Graber

Faculty Scholarship

The Maryland Constitutional Law Schmooze, "An Eighteenth-Century Constitution in a Twenty-First-Century World" explores the interpretive and political challenges inherent in recourse to an ancient text for resolving political questions. Although no Essay cites Quentin Skinner, the debates between participants in the Schmooze and this Symposium mirror the debates between Skinner and his critics. Some participants insist that crucial aspects of an eighteenth-century text remain vibrant at present, that contemporary political life would be improved by more careful study of the Constitution. Others blame crucial pathologies of American politics on a combination of too careful study of and too uncritical veneration …

To "Keep The Past In Lively Memory": William Carl Bolivar's Efforts To Preserve African American Cultural Heritage, William C. Welburn Jan 2007

To "Keep The Past In Lively Memory": William Carl Bolivar's Efforts To Preserve African American Cultural Heritage, William C. Welburn

Office of the Provost Research and Publications

The contributions of William Carl Bolivar, a Philadelphia African American bibliophile and journalist, are considered. Bolivar's interest in historical documentation shaped his sense of interconnectedness with the collective memory of Philadelphia's black community. His collecting interests are manifested in his column published in the Philadelphia Tribune, in his contributions to the American Negro Historical Society and other social and cultural organizations in Philadelphia, and in a published catalog of portions of his collection. Bolivar's network of collectors and associates formed a "nucleus for a larger effort" to preserve African American cultural heritage. Their collecting efforts formed the foundation for …

Knights In White Satin: Women Of The Ku Klux Klan, Kelli R. Kerbawy Jan 2007

Knights In White Satin: Women Of The Ku Klux Klan, Kelli R. Kerbawy

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Ku Klux Klan is often thought of as a male-dominated organization; however there is evidence that women contributed to Klan efforts and participated in their own group, Women of the KKK. This study analyzes women’s involvement within the KKK during the 1920s. Women’s participation in early progressive movements, including temperance and suffrage, served as a catalyst for women’s involvement with the KKK. This paper explores women’s roles in the Ku Klux Klan as leaders within the WKKK. From earlier social movements, women gained knowledge needed to promote and expand the WKKK and other white supremacist women’s organizations. This paper …

Visual Culture Archaeology: A Criti/Politi/Cal Methodology Of Image And Identity, James Haywood Rolling Jr. Jan 2007

Visual Culture Archaeology: A Criti/Politi/Cal Methodology Of Image And Identity, James Haywood Rolling Jr.

Teaching and Leadership - All Scholarship

This study argues the efficacy of the phenomenological cultural work of a visual culture archaeology that liberates a political and critical identity, resistant to domination, authoring social change and its own agency through multiple and incommensurable positions. Built upon Foucauldian premises, visual culture archaeology is developed as a methodology for discursive un-naming and re-naming, and emerges from the inherence and attenuation of inscripted meanings in the reinterpretation of identity during a postmodern confluence of ideas and images. The hybridized representation of the African American in Western visual culture has been unique in the effort by some to define us over …

Religion Through Ritual, Catherine M. Bell Jan 2007

Religion Through Ritual, Catherine M. Bell

Religious Studies

This chapter addresses the ramifications of, as well as strategies for, teaching ritual as a central feature of religion. This marks an important change in the approach to teaching both religion and ritual, and one of the functions of this book is to address specific issues that this change poses to teachers and scholars. It is a continual challenge to imagine how to teach religion, using ritual, in introductory courses, in courses on specific traditions, and in advanced classes that include more of the theory of the field and extended individual projects. Teaching religion with a significant focus on ritual …
