Interlocking Oppressions Of Sisterhood: (Re) Presenting The Black Woman In Nineteenth Century Blackface Minstrelsy, Catherine Downing
Interlocking Oppressions Of Sisterhood: (Re) Presenting The Black Woman In Nineteenth Century Blackface Minstrelsy, Catherine Downing
Senior Scholar Papers
Blackface minstrelsy began as a racially derisive form of early nineteenth century white working class stage entertainment that essentialized blackness into an object of social ridicule. Racial burlesque coupled with gender performance stigmatized. popular representations of black womanhood. Repetition of blackface minstrelsy's negative images solidified the black woman's stereotyped mainstream identity as a subordinate group with equally overlapping social forms of oppression. Within the first fifty years of repetitious blackface performance, the objectifying images of black female inferiority constructed a dominant American racist and sexist ideology. The black woman was either the Mammy or the Jezebel. For blacks, the only …
The Pioneering Journey Of Christian Radio Through Satellite Distribution: A Historical Overview Of The Moody Broadcasting Network 1982 – 2002, Kornel Gerstner
The Pioneering Journey Of Christian Radio Through Satellite Distribution: A Historical Overview Of The Moody Broadcasting Network 1982 – 2002, Kornel Gerstner
Masters Theses
Moody Broadcasting was the first Christian radio network that developed and used satellite distribution effectively. The project looks at the uniqueness of Moody Broadcasting Network, as part of a greater organization, Moody Bible Institute. During the twenty years, MBN was able to not only to maintain its previously owned-and-operated radio stations, but also acquire more listener-supported radio networks, without ever selling airtime. Even though the original “dream” was never fully implemented, the growth of MBN is indisputable. Chapters examine at different challenges and victories that MBN faced during these crucial years of serving the needs of listeners. This project also …

Progressive Education In Transition: An Intellectual History, Carolyn J. Faust
Progressive Education In Transition: An Intellectual History, Carolyn J. Faust
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Using a critical, intellectual perspective that is supported as a conceptual framework and provides a solid basis for historical study, this theoretical research focused on the historical evidence of sustained progressive forms of education. The developments within the field of curriculum studies during the late 1800s transitioned through changes in the 1950s and 1960s and the movement forward with the reconceptualization of the field in the early 1970s were discussed. This reconceptualization of the field in the early 1970s provided a renewed texture from which to move forward in critiquing and changing curriculum theory. By understanding curriculum rather than focusing …
Le Donne Di Dante: An Historical Study Of Female Characters In The Divine Comedy, Brooke L. Carey
Le Donne Di Dante: An Historical Study Of Female Characters In The Divine Comedy, Brooke L. Carey
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This thesis explores the characterizations of women in Dante’s Divine Comedy and uses this information to assess Dante’s opinion of women, including their behaviors, traits, and roles in society. It approaches The Comedy from a specific historical angle and requires a basic knowledge of the poem in order to understand some of the references. The entire text incorporates historical sources and evidence to support these interpretations of women in The Comedy, as they demonstrate why and how Dante might have characterized women in the way he did. Many of the arguments are supported by the Summa Theologica of Thomas …

Existing literature on financial reporting practices within the first wave of regulation- the Interstate Commerce Commission may have its historical roots in the work of Charles Francis Adams Jr., and his fellow Commissioners contained within the financial reporting requirements established through state regulation in the Annual Reports of the Board of Railroad Commissioners in The Commonwealth of Massachusetts 1870 - 1913. In addition, the regulatory environment and the scope of railway activities found within the afore-mentioned reports may throw light on the question of what forces converted the simply recording technology of the Italian merchants of the fourteenth and fifteenth …
Laboratories Of Democracy And State Brownfield Programs., Jaclyn Susan Marie Opp
Laboratories Of Democracy And State Brownfield Programs., Jaclyn Susan Marie Opp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Public investment and interest into brownfields has increased markedly in the past two decades. However, scholarship has not kept pace with this growth. Every state in the U.S. has created a brownfields program to deal with the presence of these properties in their state. However, the mechanisms offered in these state programs to facilitate brownfield remediation and redevelopment has gone untested and underresearched. This dissertation gathered data on all fifty state brownfield programs and the related Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) enforcement and inspection data. The fifty state data was then supplemented with three state case studies using in-depth …

Effects Of Evaluative Feedback On Math Self-Efficacy, Grade Self-Efficacy, And Math Achievement Of Ninth Grade Algebra Students : A Longitudinal Approach., Deborah June Burnett Thompson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The double-blind study used two intact ninth grade high school Algebra One classes for a total sample size of 46. Within each of the classes the participants were assigned randomly to one of three treatment groups: self-referenced feedback, social-referenced feedback, and a control group. Self-referenced feedback compared the student's performance to his or her previous performances. Social-referenced feedback compared the student's performance to that of the other students in the class. The control group did not receive comparative feedback but innocuous comments such as "study your notes before class." Six measurements of math self-efficacy, grade self-efficacy, and math achievement were …

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Conkling, Martin E. "A. F. C. Vilmar: Theology of Church and Ministry." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2007. 271 pp.
This historical study explores the theology of A. F. C. Vilmar. The theology of church and ministry championed by Vilmar received critical attention in his own day, and he remains a bright star in the constellation of nineteenth century Lutheran theologians who sought to restore Lutheranism to the strength of its confessional origins and to correct the cultural tendencies of thought gone wrong in revolutionary Europe. Little secondary literature exists on this "Theologian of Fact" in English, and virtually none of his …

Housing And Living Patterns Among Charleston's Free People Of Color In Wraggborough, 1796-1877, Katie Ann Stojsavljevic
All Theses
This thesis focuses on the living patterns of Charleston's antebellum free black population by examining spatial contexts, architectural styles, building materials, and the various socio-economic factors which influenced such patterns. Wraggborough, serving as a specific case study neighborhood, was selected based on its residential diversity in terms of both race and class. The timeline from 1796 to 1877 follows Wraggborough from its origins and subsequent development, into the enslavement crisis on the eve of the Civil War, through the Reconstruction era.

Pushing The Car Of Progress Forward: The Salt Lake Tribune's Quest To Change Utah For Statehood, 1871-1896, Robert Patrick Mills
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The debate over Utah statehood involved several controversial issues that the United States government and the American public wanted resolved before admission would be granted. One strong advocate for such changes in Utah was the widely published newspaper, the Salt Lake Tribune, which continually published anti-statehood and anti-Mormon ideas in the final decades before Utah was finally admitted in 1896. This thesis studies and analyzes the Tribune’s editorials and news stories to better understand which issues opponents of statehood worried the most over and what they wanted to accomplish with their protest. It finds that Mormon political domination was …

The "Dead House" At The Former Charleston Navy Base And Shipyard, Christopher Ohm
All Theses
Over the years a small brick building on the former Charleston Navy Base and Shipyard has been studied, yet still leaves many with unanswered questions. Much speculation has been made about its builder, and date of construction, but with little success. Many researchers cannot agree on the original use of this building, usually referred to as the 'Dead House.' Historical research pointed to many answers, but often led to almost insurmountable questions. This author's recent research has found several missing sites eliminating much confusion. Further research has led to explanations for many of the enigmatic aspects of this building. Architectural, …

Stepping Through The Thin, Crackly Crust Of The Present: Historians, Biographers, Novelists And Jack Burden, Lindsay A. Theisen '07

From the back of my copy of All the King's Men I learned that Willie Stark is an important part of "our collective literary consciousness," and that he is as memorable as Holden Caulfield or Huck Finn. This statement is both interesting and suspect, because Willie Stark is neither the focus of the novel nor its most compelling character. Apparently, though, charismatic politicians are infinitely more engaging than well-spoken, introspective, and witty writers - at least to some of Robert Penn Warren's peers. Despite Jack Burden's position as the protagonist in the novel, any simple plot summary of All the …
Triangulating Social Capital Measurement For Turnover Research: Applications To The U.S. Military, Frederic W. Lunas
Triangulating Social Capital Measurement For Turnover Research: Applications To The U.S. Military, Frederic W. Lunas
Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, and around the world, social capital is becoming an intriguing new focus for slowing the declining sense of community and community trust. This strengthening focus on social capital in empirical study has great potential for an important role in U.S. public policy, as policy changes focused on increasing social capital may decrease turnover.
Yet, according to researchers, not enough sufficiently tested empirical measures of social capital exist. Combining several existing measures should provide a theoretically informed measurement of social capital for turnover research with application to the U.S. Military. Within this context, this thesis incorporated survey …

Outdoor Recreation Use Survey Of South Carolina's Jocassee Gorges, Thomas Warren
All Theses
The Jocassee Gorges Natural Area is approximately 43,500 acres in size and is managed as a Wildlife Management Area by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). The purpose of the Jocassee Gorges Outdoor Recreation Use Survey was to determine the outdoor recreation activities, participation rates, and resource uses of the Jocassee Gorges. Secondary objectives included documenting and describing the current use of on-site visitors, participation rates, and temporal and spatial distribution patterns of use. The current and past use by local residents of the Jocassee Gorges were documented. A total of 263 on-site visitors were contacted, of which …

The Emergence Of Community Radio In The United States: A Historical Examination Of The National Federation Of Community Broadcasters, 1970 To 1990, Michael William Huntsberger
Faculty Publications
The National Federation of Community Broadcasters is the oldest and largest organization of community-oriented, nonprofit radio stations in the United States. Nevertheless, only a handful of scholars have considered the NFCB and its place in the history of mass media in the U.S. In the years leading up to and following the establishment of the NFCB in 1975, the public policy environment that guided the activities noncommercial radio, and all of American mass media, changed dramatically. This study provides a historical account of the NFCB during these formative years, and examines the political, economic, and social forces that propelled the …

Review Of One West, Two Myths: A Comparative Reader Edited By Carol Higham And Robert Thacker, Keith Thor Carlson
Review Of One West, Two Myths: A Comparative Reader Edited By Carol Higham And Robert Thacker, Keith Thor Carlson
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Collectively the eight essays in One West, Two Myths provide readers with a solid introduction to the comparative approach to historical study. The forty-ninth parallel serves as the volume's focus. And though the surrounding region has had, and retains, certain social, cultural, and economic commonalities, the book clearly argues that the international border is real and meaningful-despite its geographical arbitrariness.
The lead essays, by three senior historians of the Canadian and American Great Plains (Elliot West, Donald Worster, and Gerald Freisen) provide what are essentially historiographical engagements with the region as viewed through the prisms of social geography, the myth …
The 21st Century Mandaean Diaspora: New Opportunities To Reach Iraqi Mandaean Refugees With The Gospel, Karen Baker
The 21st Century Mandaean Diaspora: New Opportunities To Reach Iraqi Mandaean Refugees With The Gospel, Karen Baker
Masters Theses
Introduction This thesis argues that the status of Iraqi Mandaeans, who are fleeing their native country and becoming refugees by the thousands, presents an unprecedented opportunity for the gospel message. The Great Commission requires taking the gospel message to every people group in the world. However, the Mandaeans have been an inaccessible sect until the present time.
The Thesis This thesis evaluates the current situation of Mandaeans through academic journals and books, consultation with missionaries to Mandaeans, and interviews with Mandaean refugees. As a result of their physical isolation, deep within the Muslim world of Iraq and Iran, and their …

Accessory To Genocide? An Exploration Of America’S Response To The Holocaust, Amanda Jean Costa
Accessory To Genocide? An Exploration Of America’S Response To The Holocaust, Amanda Jean Costa
Senior Honors Theses
In considering America's reaction to the Holocaust, scholars must address serious charges that America bears some culpability for what happened. A survey of prominent historical studies and contemporary documents such as newspaper articles, committee reports, and other government documents prove America had some knowledge of the Holocaust, but did little in response. Considering the United States' knowledge of the situation in Germany, America's restrictive immigration policy in the 1930s makes her at least partially responsible for some of the lives lost. Other measures to stop the Holocaust, such as rescue, ransom, or bombing attempts, would not have been feasible or …
