Using Cooperative Learning To Promote A Problem-Solving Classroom, Amy Nebesniak

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Master of Arts in Teaching, Summative Projects

In this action research study of my eighth grade mathematics classroom, I investigate the benefits of cooperative learning, the support structures needed to promote a cooperative learning environment, and students’ ability to transfer the cooperative learning skills into less structured problem solving situations. The data analysis reveals that cooperative learning increases students’ confidence level as well as their involvement in the learning process. In order to create successful teams, students require my providing support structures and modifying the support for each group of students. Finally, students are able to more effectively apply their cooperative skills in concrete situations as compared …

The Effects Of Religious Fundamentalism On Individual Belonging, Thomas W. Moore Jul 2007

The Effects Of Religious Fundamentalism On Individual Belonging, Thomas W. Moore

Management Dissertations - Archive

In the last several years there has been an increase in the interest of religion in the workforce (Mitroff & Denton, 1999; Konz & Ryan, 1999; Mohamed, Wisnieski, Askar, & Syed, 2004; Marques & King, 2005). A number of reasons for this interest, such as the graying of the workforce, increased distrust of upper management, an increase in demand for longer work hours and higher profits, and recent reductions in employee retirement and health care benefits, have been theorized as some of the causes (Burack, 1999; Bell & Taylor, 2001; Mohamed et al, 2004). Although there has been increasing interest …

The “wiki” and open-source phenomena are transforming the way knowledge is generated and shared around the world. The word wiki is from the Hawaiian term wiki-wiki, which means to do something quickly (1). The term became prominent because of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org), which now has more than 2 million articles contributed by tens of thousands of people. People in so many fields are using Internet communities that the term wiki has come to refer to an online group that collectively works on a project. In the business world, the wiki concept is called wikinomics (1). Even U.S. spy …

Building National Digital Infrastructure: A Case Study Of Semiconductor Complex Limited, Deepak Kappor Jul 2007

Building National Digital Infrastructure: A Case Study Of Semiconductor Complex Limited, Deepak Kappor

Business Review

The digital revolution and the rapid technology developments thereafter created a real danger of the modem world getting divided into a new type of 'digital-haves and digital-have not's'. It was feared that developing countries like India may not be able to reap the benefits of the 'information age' because of the ever widening gap in technology and relevant infrastructure. As a strategic step to bridge the growing digital divide between India and the technologically advanced economies, the Government of India (GO I) decided to set up Semiconductor Complex Limited (SCL) in the year 1983 to develop Indian capabilities in the …

Life, Health, And Disability Insurance: Understanding The Relationships, Robert H. Jerry Ii Jul 2007

Life, Health, And Disability Insurance: Understanding The Relationships, Robert H. Jerry Ii

Faculty Publications

This project focuses on the extent to which dis-ability insurers should be allowed to use genetic information in underwriting and rate-setting, but this subject cannot be completely isolated from the related questions of whether life and health insurers should also have this discretion. Federal and state laws place significant restrictions on insurers' use of genetic information in health insurance, but regulation of such use in life and disability insurance is considerably more modest. This essay examines the reasons for this disparity and discusses the implications for future proposals to regulate disability insurers' use of genetic information in underwriting and rate-set-ting. …

Overweight And Obesity In The South: Prevalence And Related Health Care Costs Among Population Groups, Jerome R. Kolbo, Amal J. Khoury, Wendy Bounds, Jacquelyn Lee Jul 2007

Overweight And Obesity In The South: Prevalence And Related Health Care Costs Among Population Groups, Jerome R. Kolbo, Amal J. Khoury, Wendy Bounds, Jacquelyn Lee

Food Assistance

Overweight and obesity are leading public health concerns in the United States. Although overweight and obesity are preventable conditions in the majority of cases, their prevalence has increased significantly over the past two decades. Recent estimates indicate that 34.1 percent of Americans are classified as overweight, while 32.2 percent are classified as obese [17]. National estimates of obesity-related health care costs are alarming, yet, to date, no such estimates have been published for the Southern region overall or for population groups in the South. The Southern states have some of the highest rates of adult obesity in the nation.

A Quasi-Experimental Design: Multisystemic Therapy As An Alternative Community-Based Treatment For Youth With Severe Emotional Disturbance, Kirstin Painter

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

This study compared multisystemic therapy to usual services in a community mental health setting for emotionally disturbed youth with externalizing disorders. Usual services included the combination of case management with a family skills training curriculum. A secondary data analysis utilizing a pretest-post-test, quasi-experimental design was used. Eighty-seven youth were in each group and were matched based on gender (53% female, 47% male) and ethnicity (34 % African American, 54% Caucasian, 10% Hispanic, and 2% other). Findings of this study suggest that youth who received MST experienced more improved treatment outcomes across the combination of areas in their social ecology than …

Solar 2007: Florida's Emergency Shelters Go Solar, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Florida has its fair share of dangerous weather conditions including hurricanes, tornados and floods. Florida Legislature passed various laws and made revisions addressing disaster planning which required that the Department of Education, in consultation with school boards and county and state emergency management offices, develop design standards for public shelters to be incorporated into State Requirements for Educational Facilities.

Last year, Solar for Schools, a state program, provided funds to put photovoltaic systems on schools that are classified as shelters, adding a new dimension to the educational program. Middleton High School is an example of an application to power the …

Infertility And Life Satisfaction Among Women, Julia Mcquillan, Roselie Torres Stone, Arthur L. Greil Jul 2007

Infertility And Life Satisfaction Among Women, Julia Mcquillan, Roselie Torres Stone, Arthur L. Greil

Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications

Using data from a random sample of 580 midwestern women, the authors explore the association between lifetime infertility and life satisfaction. Past research shows lower life satisfaction among those seeking help for infertility. The authors find no direct effects of lifetime infertility, regardless of perception of a problem, on life satisfaction; however, there are several conditional effects. Among women who have ever met the criteria for infertility and perceive a fertility problem, life satisfaction is significantly lower for non-mothers and those with higher internal medical locus of control, and the association is weaker for employed women. For women with infertility …

Low-Value &(And) Predictably Small: When Should Class-Arbitration Waivers Be Invalidated As Unconscionable, Christopher B. Mckinney Jul 2007

Low-Value &(And) Predictably Small: When Should Class-Arbitration Waivers Be Invalidated As Unconscionable, Christopher B. Mckinney

Journal of Dispute Resolution

In Muhammad v. County Bank of Rehoboth Beach, the New Jersey Supreme Court chose the interests of consumers over liberally construed Federal Arbitration Act (FAA) policies in deciding that a no class-arbitration provision contained within a payday loan contract was unconscionable. The court used state law contract principles to invalidate the clause, finding that the clause violated several state public policies. Particularly important to the court was the fact that individual claims for damages would be nominal, and thus individual vindication of statutory rights would prove too costly to be practical. In making this distinction, the court suggested a preference …

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

The molecular mechanisms that promote progression of localized prostate cancer to hormone-refractory and disseminated disease are poorly understood. Prolactin (Prl) is a local growth factor produced in high-grade prostate cancer, and exogenously added Prl in tissue or explant cultures of normal and malignant prostate is a strong mitogen and survival factor for prostate epithelium. The key signaling proteins that mediate the biological effects of Prl in prostate cancer are Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (Stat)-5a/5b via activation of Janus kinase-2. Importantly, inhibition of Stat5a/b in prostate cancer cells induces apoptotic death. Using a specific Prl receptor antagonist (Delta1-9G129R-hPRL), we …

Our Legacy Of Neglect: The Longfellow Bridge And The Cost Of Deferred Maintenance, David Westerling, Steve Poftak Jul 2007

Our Legacy Of Neglect: The Longfellow Bridge And The Cost Of Deferred Maintenance, David Westerling, Steve Poftak

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

The Longfellow Bridge, connecting Boston and Cambridge, is in bad shape, due not only to its age and the ravages of our weather, but also to a troubling and persistent lack of maintenance. Fixing the bridge, in effect paying the bill for our unwillingness to maintain it, is estimated to cost at least $180 million, with the potential for cost overruns reaching into the hundreds of millions. The neglect of the Longfellow Bridge is symptomatic of a problem that encompasses almost all the assets owned by the Commonwealth.
