Pp2cdelta (Ppm1d, Wip1), An Endogenous Inhibitor Of P38 Mapk, Is Regulated Along With Trp53 And Cdkn2a Following P38 Mapk Inhibition During Mouse Preimplantation Development., Jenny A Hickson, Barry Fong, Patricia H Watson, Andrew J Watson Jul 2007

Pp2cdelta (Ppm1d, Wip1), An Endogenous Inhibitor Of P38 Mapk, Is Regulated Along With Trp53 And Cdkn2a Following P38 Mapk Inhibition During Mouse Preimplantation Development., Jenny A Hickson, Barry Fong, Patricia H Watson, Andrew J Watson

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Preimplantation embryos utilize mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling (MAPK) pathways to relay signals from the external environment to prepare appropriate responses and adaptations to a changing milieu. It is therefore important to investigate how MAPK pathways are regulated during preimplantation development. This study was conducted to investigate whether PP2Cdelta (Ppm1d, WIP1) is expressed during mouse preimplantation development and to determine the influences of p38 MAPK inhibition on expression of Trp53 (p53), Ppm1d, (WIP1), and Cdkn2a (p16) during mouse preimplantation development. Our results indicate that Trp53, Ppm1d, and Cdkn2a mRNAs and TRP53 and PP2Cdelta proteins are expressed throughout mouse preimplantation development. Treatment …

Attitudes Toward Public Health Funding: Results Of A Survey That Explored Differences In Support By Ontario Municipal Elected Officials For Local Public Health Programs, Elaine Reddick Jul 2007

Attitudes Toward Public Health Funding: Results Of A Survey That Explored Differences In Support By Ontario Municipal Elected Officials For Local Public Health Programs, Elaine Reddick

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines the reluctance of municipal officials towards public health funding in Ontario based on a survey that aimed to determine if there was a difference in attitudes towards the municipal funding of public health by type of program. The findings reveal that while the respondents exhibited strong overall support for government funding of both types of programs, municipal politicians in Ontario showed a significant preference for committing municipal funds to protection-type programs than for promotion-type programs.

Spontaneous Low-Frequency Fluctuations In The Bold Signal In Schizophrenic Patients: Anomalies In The Default Network, Robyn L Bluhm, Jodi Miller, Ruth A Lanius, Elizabeth A Osuch, Kristine Boksman, R W J Neufeld, Jean Theberge, Betsy Schaefer, Peter Williamson Jul 2007

Spontaneous Low-Frequency Fluctuations In The Bold Signal In Schizophrenic Patients: Anomalies In The Default Network, Robyn L Bluhm, Jodi Miller, Ruth A Lanius, Elizabeth A Osuch, Kristine Boksman, R W J Neufeld, Jean Theberge, Betsy Schaefer, Peter Williamson

Department of Medicine Publications

Spontaneous low-frequency fluctuations in the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal have been shown to reflect neural synchrony between brain regions. A "default network" of spontaneous low-frequency fluctuations has been described in healthy volunteers during stimulus-independent thought. Negatively correlated with this network are regions activated during attention-demanding tasks. Both these networks involve brain regions and functions that have been linked with schizophrenia in previous research. The present study examined spontaneous slow fluctuations in the BOLD signal at rest, as measured by correlation with low-frequency oscillations in the posterior cingulate, in 17 schizophrenic patients, and 17 comparable …

Particularisation Of Child Abuse Offences: Common Problems When Questioning Child Witnesses, Martine B. Powell, Kim P. Roberts, Belinda Guadagno Jul 2007

Particularisation Of Child Abuse Offences: Common Problems When Questioning Child Witnesses, Martine B. Powell, Kim P. Roberts, Belinda Guadagno

Psychology Faculty Publications

Prosecuting child abusers is often difficult due to lack of particularising details. Two possible ways of addressing this difficulty are: (a) to change the justice system to better serve prosecution for repeated offences (i.e., allow generic testimony), and (b) to bolster children's testimony. As this article has illustrated, there is still considerable potential for increasing (b). Given the low prosecution rates of child abuse offences, the need for exceptional interviewer training programs coupled with resources for ongoing supervision is now critical. While there have been some major improvements in child witness investigative interviews over the past two decades, there are …

Global-Change Scenarios: Their Development And Use, Edward Parson, Virginia Burkett, Karen Fisher-Vanden, David Keith, Linda Mearns, Hugh Pitcher, Cynthia Rosenzweig, Mort Webster

United States Department of Energy: Publications

A scenario is a description of potential future conditions produced to inform decision-making under uncertainty. Scenarios can help inform decisions that involve high stakes and poorly characterized uncertainty, which may thwart other, conventional forms of analysis or decision support. Originally developed to study military and security problems, scenarios are now widely used for strategic planning and assessment in businesses and other organizations, and increasingly to inform planning, analysis, and decision-making for environmental issues, including climate change.
Scenarios can serve many purposes. They can help inform specific decisions, or can provide inputs to assessments, models, or other decision-support activities when these …

Pearl Harbor In Reverse: Moral Analogies In The Cuban Missile Crisis, Dominic Tierney Jul 2007

Pearl Harbor In Reverse: Moral Analogies In The Cuban Missile Crisis, Dominic Tierney

Political Science Faculty Works

During the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, the argument that U.S. air strikes against Soviet missile sites in Cuba would be morally analogous to the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 had a major impact on policymaking. The invocation of this analogy contributed to President John F. Kennedy's decision to forgo an immediate attack on the missiles and to start instead with a naval blockade of the island. The "Pearl Harbor in reverse" argument is an example of an important phenomenon that has received little attention in foreign policy analysis—the moral analogy. Fusing together elements of moral and analogical …

A Soft Landing And A Long Layover, John Austin, Chris Decker, Tom Doering, Ernie Goss, Philip Baker, Bruce Johnson, Lisa Johnson, Ken Lemke, Franz Schwarz, Scott Strain, Eric Thompson

Business in Nebraska

The U.S. economy achieved a soft landing in 2006. This was a desirable outcome. The economy needed a break from its rapid, and potentially inflationary, growth in 2004 and 2005, before taking off again. But, that new flight has been delayed. The aggregate economy has remained mired in slow growth in the first half of 2007. Pockets of the economy, such as the labor market, have been strong, but a weak housing sector has limited overall growth. Further, signs point to one or two more quarters of weaker growth, before the economy is able to take off again.

This outcome …

Stochastic Modeling Of Retail Mortgage Loans Based On Past Due, Prepaid, And Default States, Chang Liu Jul 2007

Stochastic Modeling Of Retail Mortgage Loans Based On Past Due, Prepaid, And Default States, Chang Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

Stochastic models were developed that provide important measures related to retail mortgages and credit cards for the management of a bank. Based on Markov theory, two models were developed that predict mortgage portfolio size and expected duration of stay in each of the states, which are defined according to the criteria of Basel Accord II and the Federal Reserve Bank. Also, to facilitate comparisons among different types of credit products and different time periods, a model was developed to generate a health index for a retail mortgage. This model could be easily extended, using multivariate regression or multivariate time series …
