An Examination Of The Relationship Between Family Leisure Satisfaction And Satisfaction With Family Life, Joel Ryan Agate Jul 2007

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Family Leisure Satisfaction And Satisfaction With Family Life, Joel Ryan Agate

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between family leisure satisfaction and satisfaction with family life. Zabriskie's Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP) was used to measure core, balance, and total family leisure satisfaction. The Satisfaction With Family Life Scale (SWFL) an adaptation of Diener, Emmons, Larsen, and Griffin's satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), done by Zabriskie and McCormick, was used to measure satisfaction with family life. The sample consisted of 898 parent and youth pairs from throughout the United States. Results indicated that there was a relationship between all family leisure satisfaction variables and satisfaction with family …

Borch Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Faculty Publications

The mitotic spindle consists of a complex network of proteins that segregates chromosomes in eukaryotes. To strengthen our understanding of the molecular composition, organization, and regulation of the mitotic spindle, we performed a system-wide two-hybrid screen on 94 proteins implicated in spindle function in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We report 604 predominantly novel interactions that were detected in multiple screens, involving 303 distinct prey proteins. We uncovered a pattern of extensive interactions between spindle proteins reflecting the intricate organization of the spindle. Furthermore, we observed novel connections between kinetochore complexes and chromatin-modifying proteins and used phosphorylation site mutants of NDC80/TID3 to gain …

Navajo Baskets And The American Indian Voice: Searching For The Contemporary Native American In The Trading Post, The Natural History Museum, And The Fine Art Museum, Laura Paulsen Howe

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the display of Navajo baskets and examines some of the possible meanings Navajo baskets can reveal. Acknowledging that the meaning of a work of art changes when it is placed in different environments, the thesis explores what meanings are revealed and what meanings are concealed in basket displays in three venues: the trading post, the natural history museum, and the fine art museum. The study concludes that the fine art museum has the most potential to foster a dialogue about the contemporary Navajo, whose identity is a product of continuity and change. Chapter one discusses the basket's …

Climate Change, Energy Demand And Market Power In A General Equilibrium Model Of The World Economy, Roberto Roson, Francesco Bosello, Enrica De Cian Jul 2007

Climate Change, Energy Demand And Market Power In A General Equilibrium Model Of The World Economy, Roberto Roson, Francesco Bosello, Enrica De Cian

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Future energy demand will be affected by changes in prices and income, but also by other factors, like temperature levels. This paper draws upon an econometric study, disentangling the contribution of temperature in the determination of the annual regional demand for energy goods. Combining estimates of temperature elasticities with scenarios of future climate change, it is possible to assess variations in energy demand induced (directly) by the global warming. We use this information to simulate a change in the demand structure of households in a CGE model of the world economy, in a set of assessment exercises. The changing demand …

Climate Change: National And Local Policy Opportunities In China, Fei Teng, Alun Gu Jul 2007

Climate Change: National And Local Policy Opportunities In China, Fei Teng, Alun Gu

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Climate Change poses a wide range of potentially very severe threats in China. This aggravates the existing vulnerability of China and is one of the big challenges faced by the Chinese government. Adaptation programmes and projects are being developed and implemented at national and local level. As China is engaged in heavy investment in infrastructure development as a consequence of the rapid process of development and urbanization, mainstreaming adaptation into such development process is a priority for China. China has also made positive contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through participations in the CDM under the Kyoto Protocol framework. Although …

Research Evaluation As A Policy Design Tool: Mapping Approaches Across A Set Of Case Studies , Valeria Papponetti, Massimiano Bucchi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper provides an overview of research evaluation practices across countries. The main aim is to investigate whether research assessment is implemented and to see to what extent its results are used to revise policy strategies, identify new research priorities, allocate financial resources or enhance public understanding of R&D. The paper addresses a set of cases studies, four within Europe (UK, Finland, Italy, and Spain) and two outside (US and Japan). Each case study provides an outline of the strategies devised to improve the domestic science system; offers a map of the main actors of science policy and introduces the …

Estimating Tourist Externalities On Residents: A Choice Modeling Approach To The Case Of Rimini, Paolo Figini, Massimiliano Castellani, Laura Vici Jul 2007

Estimating Tourist Externalities On Residents: A Choice Modeling Approach To The Case Of Rimini, Paolo Figini, Massimiliano Castellani, Laura Vici

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

During their holidays, tourists produce direct and indirect effects on local residents, which can either be positive or negative. In this paper we investigate how residents of Rimini, a popular Italian seaside resort hosting more than ten million national and foreign overnight stays every year, internalise such effects. We use a stated preference approach and, in particular, a discrete choice modelling technique; within this framework, we are able to test some conjectures about residents’ welfare, by measuring their willingness to pay for alternative scenarios regarding the use of the territory. Tourist policies and public investments in the destination affect residents’ …

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

We have developed a microfluidic device that allows the isolation and genome amplification of individual microbial cells, thereby enabling organism-level genomic analysis of complex microbial ecosystems without the need for culture. This device was used to perform a directed survey of the human subgingival crevice and to isolate bacteria having rod-like morphology. Several isolated microbes had a 16S rRNA sequence that placed them in candidate phylum TM7, which has no cultivated or sequenced members. Genome amplification from individual TM7 cells allowed us to sequence and assemble >1,000 genes, providing insight into the physiology of members of this phylum. This approach …

Topoisomerase Ii-Drug Interaction Domains: Identification Of Substituents On Etoposide That Interact With The Enzyme, Amy M. Wilstermann, Ryan P. Bender, Murrell Godfrey, Sungjo Choi, Clemens Anklin, David B. Berkowitz, Neil Osheroff, David E. Graves Jul 2007

Topoisomerase Ii-Drug Interaction Domains: Identification Of Substituents On Etoposide That Interact With The Enzyme, Amy M. Wilstermann, Ryan P. Bender, Murrell Godfrey, Sungjo Choi, Clemens Anklin, David B. Berkowitz, Neil Osheroff, David E. Graves

David Berkowitz Publications

Etoposide is one of the most successful chemotherapeutic agents used for the treatment of human cancers. The drug kills cells by inhibiting the ability of topoisomerase II to ligate nucleic acids that it cleaves during the double-stranded DNA passage reaction. Etoposide is composed of a polycyclic ring system (rings A–D), a glycosidic moiety at the C4 position, and a pendant ring (E–ring) at the C1 position. Although drug-enzyme contacts, as opposed to drug-DNA interactions, mediate the entry of etoposide into the topoisomerase II-drug-DNA complex, the substituents on etoposide that interact with the enzyme have not been identified. Therefore, saturation transfer …

Perceptions Of Value: An Analysis Of New Jersey's Public And Private Four-Year Colleges And Universities To Determine If Adherence To Recognized Design Principles Increases The Perceived Value Of Their Institution, Kathryn Marie Ponzi

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine how closely four-year New Jersey colleges and universities, both public and private, adhere to general standards for home page layout and design. This study also looked to determine if adherence to proper design standards increase the perceived quality of the institution. Field experiment participants rated the home pages of six institutions chosen by the researcher in her content analysis. Using Likert-type questions, 23 students rated the home pages of the colleges and universities, yielding results supporting the initial claim: the more closely an institution adheres to certain home page design standards, the …
