Open Angle Glaucoma Effects On Preattentive Visual Search (Pavs) Efficiency For Flicker, Motion Displacement And Orientation Pop-Out Tasks, James Loughman, Peter Davison, Daniel Ian Flitcroft

Articles

Background/aim: Preattentive visual search (PAVS) describes rapid and efficient retinal and neural processing capable of immediate target detection in the visual field. Damage to the nerve fibre layer or visual pathway might reduce the efficiency with which the visual system performs such analysis. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that patients with glaucoma are impaired on parallel search tasks, and that this would serve to distinguish glaucoma in early cases. Methods: Three groups of observers (glaucoma patients, suspect and normal individuals) were examined, using computer-generated flicker, orientation, and vertical motion displacement targets to assess PAVS efficiency. …

Frequency Of Aeromonas Spp. Detection In Rainbow Trout And Recirculation Aquaculture Systems And The Storage Stability Of Fillets, Tabetha Marie Littler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recirculating aquaculture systems enable increased fish production per volume of water. Unfortunately, recirculation systems also provide conditions for bacterial growth. Aeromonas, a genus of bacteria ubiquitous in the environment, contains fish pathogens, human pathogens, and/or spoilage organisms. Of the salmonid species, rainbow trout are the most susceptible to Motile Aeromonad Septicemia (MAS), the fish disease caused by Aeromonas spp. In humans, illnesses such as gastroenteritis, septicemia, and wound infections are caused by ingestion or exposure to Aeromonas spp. The objective of this study was to survey Aeromonas spp. present in the production system, on the fish, and on the butterfly …

Reparations Of The Inter-American Human Rights System In Cases Of Gross And Systemic Violations Of Human Rights: The Colombian Case, Diego Rodriguez-Pinzon Aug 2007

Reparations Of The Inter-American Human Rights System In Cases Of Gross And Systemic Violations Of Human Rights: The Colombian Case, Diego Rodriguez-Pinzon

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The author uses the case of Colombia, a country with which the inter-American human rights system has dealt in the last twenty-five years, as an example to try to illustrate how the Inter-American Human Rights Commission and Inter-American Court for Human Rights have balanced the issue of remedies and reparations with the difficult task of repairing gross and systematic violations. The case of Colombia provides some insight on how international mechanisms are implemented in this region and, particularly, how some of Colombia’s official institutions and non-governmental organizations are trying to engage in a dialogue at the international level in order …

Reparations: A Remedies Law Perspective, Darren L. Hutchinson Aug 2007

Reparations: A Remedies Law Perspective, Darren L. Hutchinson

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This article provides a general overview of reparations discourse in the United States and offers suggestions concerning how advocates of reparations might frame their claims. The author discusses how remedies law might be a useful means of redress for litigants and examines some of the political and legal barriers to reparations in the United States. The barriers include the failure of opponents to treat remedies for gross human rights or civil rights deprivations as a public good, rather than as a series of private transactions that benefit or burden individuals. The author ultimately sets the litigation model aside as providing …

The Role Of Leadership In Emergent, Self-Organization, Donde Ashmos Plowman, Stephanie Solansky, Tammy E. Beck, Lakami Baker, Mukta Kulkarni, Deandra Villarreal Travis

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

As complex systems, organizations exist far from equilibrium where the ongoing interaction of system components leads to emergent and self-organizing behavior. What, then, is the role of leadership in systems where change often emerges in unexpected ways? In this paper, we build on the work of Marion and Uhl-Bien who suggest that in complex systems leaders enable rather than control the future. While traditional views of leadership focus on the leader’s responsibility for determining and directing the future through heavy reliance on control mechanisms, we offer empirical support for a different view of leadership based on a complexity perspective of …

Forum Introduction: Organizational Communication Scholars As Public Intellectuals, Kathleen J. Krone, Lynn M. Harter

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

We remain optimistic when we read, write, ask, and answer questions. When a journal comes across our desks, we select an article or two to peruse and hope the arguments will transform how we see things. We hope the work will inspire us, offer new ways of thinking about a salient issue or question, and foster edifying dialogue about lived problems. In short, we muse, how does this scholarship enable stakeholders to understand, feel, and grapple with the experiences being expressed? What does the research awaken or evoke in those who consume it? What paths does the scholarship carve? What …

Ghostly Writing : Nineteenth-Century American Women Writers And Issues Of Visibility, Erin Barclay Nemiroff Aug 2007

Ghostly Writing : Nineteenth-Century American Women Writers And Issues Of Visibility, Erin Barclay Nemiroff

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis examines three nineteenth-century female authors’ use of the ghost story to articulate and illustrate the anxiety and restriction they suffered under the ideals of True Womanhood. It discusses how Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Edith Wharton, and Mary Wilkins Freeman were compelled to use this unorthodox method of expression because its innate characteristics granted them the creative liberty necessary for authentic female expression and an evolution into New Womanhood and tum-of-the-century feminism. It reveals how the ghost story allowed them to be taken seriously by their male counterparts, yet still provided them with the degree of camouflage necessary to prevent …

Making Minimally Invasive Thr Safe: Conclusions From Biomechanical Simulation And Analysis, P C. Noble, J D. Johnston, J A. Alexander, M T. Thompson, M M. Usrey, E M. Heinrich, G C. Landon, K B. Mathis

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The use of smaller surgical incisions has become popularized for total hip arthroplasty (THR) because of the potential benefits of shorter recovery and improved cosmetic appearance. However, an increased incidence of serious complications has been reported. To minimize the risks of minimally invasive approaches to THR, we have developed an experimental approach which enables us to evaluate risk factors in these procedures through cadaveric simulations performed within the laboratory. During cadaveric hip replacement procedures performed via posterior and antero-lateral mini-incisions, pressures developed between the wound edges and the retractors were approximately double those recorded during conventional hip replacement using Charnley …

Pressure Deflection Behavior Of Candidate Materials For A Morphing Wing, Christopher Griffin Aug 2007

Pressure Deflection Behavior Of Candidate Materials For A Morphing Wing, Christopher Griffin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The research presented in this thesis evaluates different materials that are candidates to be used as a flexible skin on a morphing wing. A morphing wing has come to be known as any wing that changes shape. Although there has been a great amount of research involved in designing morphing mechanisms, the information for applicable wing skin material has been limited. A morphing wing skin needs to be flexible enough to deflect and morph to a new shape given a suitable amount of force, yet strong enough to resist the aerodynamic forces encountered during flight. It also must remain elastic …

Remote health monitoring affords the possibility of improving the quality of health care by enabling relatively inexpensive out-patient care. However, remote health monitoring raises new a problem: the potential for data explosion in health care systems. To address this problem, the remote health monitoring systems must be integrated with analysis tools that provide automated trend analysis and event detection in real time. In this paper, we propose an overview of Century, an extensible framework for analysis of large numbers of remote sensor-based medical data streams.
