Critical Infrastructure Systems Modelling: Benchmarking Cpntools, Graeme Pye, Matthew J. Warren Dec 2007

Critical Infrastructure Systems Modelling: Benchmarking Cpntools, Graeme Pye, Matthew J. Warren

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

This paper reports on the application of systems modelling benchmarks to determine the viability of systems modelling software and its suitability for modelling critical infrastructure systems. This research applies the earlier research that related to developing benchmarks that when applied to systems modelling software will indicate its likely suitability to modelling critical infrastructure systems. In this context, the systems modeling benchmarks will assess the practicality of CPNTools to the task of modelling critical infrastructure systems.

Cell Biology and Physiology Research and Scholarship

Purpose: Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), acting through its receptor, c-met, is a cytokine whose role in promoting cell migration has been extensively documented. HGF and c-met have been implicated in the progression of angiogenesis in many cancer models and in the mouse model of retinal neovascularization. However, HGF mediation of protease expression and of an endothelial cell migratory phenotype in the retina has not been explored. We determined if HGF and/or hypoxia effects cell migration and protease levels in retinal microvascular endothelial cells and in a mouse model of retinal neovascularization. Methods: Bovine retinal microvascular endothelial cells (BRMVEC) were grown …

Neuronal And Molecular Adaptations Of Gaba Neurons In The Ventral Tegmental Area To Chronic Alcohol, Kimberly Hales Dec 2007

Neuronal And Molecular Adaptations Of Gaba Neurons In The Ventral Tegmental Area To Chronic Alcohol, Kimberly Hales

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis project was to examine the effects of chronic alcohol on the excitability and molecular adaptation of GABA neurons of the ventral tegmental area (VTA). GABA neurons are of interest with regards to ethanol intoxication, reinforcement, and dependence due to their widespread distribution and connectivity to mesocorticolimbic dopamine (DA) neurons implicated in alcohol reward and addiction. Since we have previously shown adaptation of VTA GABA neuron firing rate to chronic ethanol (Gallegos, Criado et al. 1999) and suppression of gap-junction (GJ) mediated coupling between these neurons by acute ethanol (Stobbs, Ohran et al. 2004), we wanted …

Commercial Critical Systems And Critical Infrastructure Protection: A Future Research Agenda, Matthew J. Warren, Shona Leitch Dec 2007

Commercial Critical Systems And Critical Infrastructure Protection: A Future Research Agenda, Matthew J. Warren, Shona Leitch

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

Secure management of Australia’s commercial critical infrastructure presents ongoing challenges to owners and the government. Although it is currently managed through high-level information sharing via collaboration, but does this suit the commercial sector. One of the issues facing Australia is that the majority of critical infrastructure resides under the control of the business sector and certain aspects such of the critical infrastructure such as Supply Chain Management (SCM) systems are distributed entities and not a single entity. The paper focuses upon the security issues associated with SCM systems and critical infrastructure protection

Mexico Engineering Study Abroad: Assessing The Effectiveness Of International Experiences On Teaching Global Engineering Skills, Joshua Benjamin Draper Dec 2007

Mexico Engineering Study Abroad: Assessing The Effectiveness Of International Experiences On Teaching Global Engineering Skills, Joshua Benjamin Draper

Theses and Dissertations

Globalization is a rapidly increasing trend in many industries, including civil engineering. This paper defines the skills engineers will need in an increasingly international industry. It also describes an engineering study abroad program designed to teach some of those skills to students and presents a survey used as an assessment tool to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. The program, called Mexico Engineering Study Abroad (MESA), is taught at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, UT. MESA is a project-based extended field trip format class that couples hydrologic modeling with cultural awareness as students work together with Mexican students on …

Facts: The appellant suffered from a mental illness. On 1 October 1999, the appellant attacked the respondent, who was then an eight year old child, and seriously wounded him. The appellant then attacked his own daughter and killed her. The appellant was indicted for murder and attempted murder, but because of the mental illness from which he suffered, he was found not to be responsible for his actions, and he was hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital. The respondent, through his parents, sued the appellant for compensation.

In this three part series, we introduce historical museums in Japan and their role in public education. Following this introduction to peace museums, Ms. Nishino Rumiko, a founder of the Women’s Active Museum on War and Peace (WAM), introduces WAM’s activities and the 2000 Citizens Tribunal on the ‘comfort women’. The final article is by Mr. Kim Yeonghwan, the former associate director of Grassroots House Peace Museum who describes the peace and reconciliation programs that the Museum sponsors.

Posters and Presentations

Dr. Deb LaPointe and Claire Conrad performed a research project designed to answer the question: Wikis in Higher Education: Collaborative by Nature or Design? The research results were submitted as a poster at the South Central Medical Library Conference in Albuquerque in October 2007. Seven law students and six graduate students were interviewed. The students had been required to post content to wikis as a course requirement. The law students had posted content to the law clinic wiki while enrolled as students in the law school clinic. The six graduate students posted content to a wiki as part of Dr. …

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Human behavioral ecologists have shown that the reproductive lives of women are affected by both their husbands and the grandmothers of their children. Study of the combined effect of the roles of the husbands and mothers of 650 Khasi women aged 16–50 years supports the ideas that the reproductive agendas of husbands may require more than women want to invest and that mothers provide support and protective services to their daughters and grandchildren. In the absence of the woman’s mother, the husband’s agenda appears to have more influence on her reproductive career. In a cooperative vein, women’s mothers may contribute …

The Effect Of Selection For Desiccation Resistance On Cold Tolerance Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Brent J. Sinclair, Sean Nelson, Theresa L. Nilson, Stephen P. Roberts, Allen G. Gibbs Dec 2007

The Effect Of Selection For Desiccation Resistance On Cold Tolerance Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Brent J. Sinclair, Sean Nelson, Theresa L. Nilson, Stephen P. Roberts, Allen G. Gibbs

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Low Temperature and Desiccation Stress Are Thought to Be Mechanistically Similar in Insects, and Several Studies Indicate that There is a Degree of Cross-Tolerance between Them, such that Increased Cold Tolerance Results in Greater Desiccation Tolerance and Vice Versa. This Assertion is Tested at an Evolutionary Scale by Examining Basal Cold Tolerance, Rapid Cold-Hardening (RCH) and Chill Coma Recovery in Replicate Populations of Drosophila Melanogaster Selected for Desiccation Resistance (With Controls for Both Selection and Concomitant Starvation) for over 50 Generations. All of the Populations Display a RCH Response, and There is No Effect of Selection Regime on RCH or …
