Force-Response Considerations In Ciliary Mechanosensation, Andrew Resnick, Ulrich Hopfer Aug 2007

Force-Response Considerations In Ciliary Mechanosensation, Andrew Resnick, Ulrich Hopfer

Physics Faculty Publications

Considerable experimental evidence indicates that the primary, nonmotile cilium is a mechanosensory organelle in several epithelial cell types. As the relationship between cellular responses and nature and magnitude of applied forces is not well understood, we have investigated the effects of exposure of monolayers of renal collecting duct chief cells to orbital shaking and quantified the forces incident on cilia. An exposure of 24 h of these cells to orbital shaking resulted in a decrease of amiloride-sensitive sodium current by ∼60% and ciliary length by ∼30%. The sensitivity of the sodium current to shaking was dependent on intact cilia. The …

Methamphetamine abuse in young adults has long-term deleterious effects on brain function that are associated with damage to monoaminergic neurons. Administration of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) protects dopamine neurons from the toxic effects of methamphetamine in animal models. Therefore, we hypothesized that a partial GDNF gene deletion would increase the susceptibility of mice to methamphetamine neurotoxicity during young adulthood and possibly increase age-related deterioration of behavior and dopamine function. Two weeks after a methamphetamine binge (4 x 10 mg/kg, i.p., at 2 h intervals), GDNF +/- mice had a significantly greater reduction of tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity in the …

The purpose of this article is to analyze the attitudes of students towards the theoretical and clinical knowledge and about research as part of the Dentistry Program during their professional training at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Xochimilco. A questionnaire with Likert items was applied to students in order to know their answers about these topics. An X2 test was applied to analyze the homogeneity of answers. Results indicate that students’ opinions differ on: a) the amount of theoretical content regarding treatment (p < .003), b) some aspects regarding clinical knowledge (p < .006), and c) research options per school year (p < .05). We conclude that it is necessary to study in depth the achievements and limitations of the program proposed by the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Xochimilco.

Coagulation Effects On Aerosol Dynamics Along An Isothermal Vertical Flat Plate, Chang-Bin Huang, Cherng-Shing Lin, Shih-Cheng Wang Aug 2007

Coagulation Effects On Aerosol Dynamics Along An Isothermal Vertical Flat Plate, Chang-Bin Huang, Cherng-Shing Lin, Shih-Cheng Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Aerosol dynamic behavior in a turbulent flow field is investigated in this study. The flow field is a natural convection boundary layer flow adjacent to a heated or cooled vertical flat plate. The main computational method is based on a boundary layer type solution combining the flow field and sectional aerosol simulation. The SIMPLE alogrithm is adopted to solve the flow continuity, momentum, energy, and aerosol concentration equations. Various aerosol dynamic transport and removal mechanisms, including fluid convection, Brownian motion, gravitational settling, thermophoretic drift, and coagulation of aerosols, are considered in the simulation model. Aerosol coagulation effects on particle transport …

Optimization Of Perforated Doublelayer Absorbers Using Simulated Annealing, Min-Chie Chiu, Ying-Chun Chang, Long-Jyi Yeh, Tian-Syung Lan Aug 2007

Optimization Of Perforated Doublelayer Absorbers Using Simulated Annealing, Min-Chie Chiu, Ying-Chun Chang, Long-Jyi Yeh, Tian-Syung Lan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

As noise is highly responsible for the psychological and physiological ills to workers, the noise control for enclosed manufacturing system with sound absorber becomes obligatory; besides, considering the maintenance and operation in a room, the minimal thickness of sound absorber is certainly requested, according. To meet these issues, the compromising design target, ratio of sound absorption coefficient to thickness of acoustic panel, is thus proposed and applied as a researched objective, accordingly. In this paper, the simulated annealing (SA) is utilized in the shape optimization of the double-layer sound absorption system. The paper tackles not only the theoretical derivation in …
