What And Why Of Technostress: Technology Antecedents And Implications, Ramakrishna Ayyagari Aug 2007

What And Why Of Technostress: Technology Antecedents And Implications, Ramakrishna Ayyagari

All Dissertations

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (2002) reports that, on average, individuals worked seven hours per week from home in addition to regular work hours. This is made possible by advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs). While the increasing workload is not unusual, it has been related to stress, including the relatively new phenomenon of stress induced by technologies (technostress). Academic literature, popular press and anecdotal evidence suggest that ICTs are responsible for increased stress levels in individuals. However, it is not very clear as to how or why ICTs create stress.
Prior research on technostress has been largely descriptive. …

Parasite Findings In Archeological Remains: Diagnosis And Interpretation, Adauto Arajuo, Karl J. Reinhard, Luiz Fernando Ferreira Aug 2007

Parasite Findings In Archeological Remains: Diagnosis And Interpretation, Adauto Arajuo, Karl J. Reinhard, Luiz Fernando Ferreira

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Paleoparasitology has contributed to resolving the debate about the peopling of the Americas and determining the antiquity of human parasite infection. Hookworm (Ancylostomidae) and whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) and other exclusive human intestinal parasites have been recorded in pre-Columbian America. These parasite species originated in pre-hominids and have accompanied humans across continents when people went out of Africa. However, for those human populations that crossed the Bering Land Bridge from Siberia to Alaska, cold climate conditions hampered parasite transmission. Alternative migration routes have been proposed to explain the presence of these parasites in pre-Columbian populations in the Americas. Other …

Legal Families And Environmental Protection: Is There A Causal Relationship?, Guiseppe Di Vita Aug 2007

Legal Families And Environmental Protection: Is There A Causal Relationship?, Guiseppe Di Vita

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In this paper we build up the analysis of La Porta et al. (1998), to investigate the importance of legal families in explaining the variations in pollution emissions in different countries. The main intuition behind our analysis is that the nations in which the rights of shareholders are more protected, promote real and financial investment; this increases the speed at which the per-capita income corresponding to the declining branch of the Environmental Kutznets Curve (EKC) is achieved. In econometrics different regression analyses were performed using as dependent variables three different kinds of pollutants (CO2, fine suspended particulates and waste), including …

Medicare's Use Of Risk Adjustment, Gerald F. Kominski Aug 2007

Medicare's Use Of Risk Adjustment, Gerald F. Kominski

National Health Policy Forum

Medicare accounts for expected differences in resource needs of patients or health plan enrollees by risk-adjusting the payments it makes to health care facilities, such as hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and home health agencies, and the premiums it pays to health plans. Risk adjustment is intended to ensure that payments or premiums are adequate for patients or plan enrollees who require more resources than average in order to protect beneficiary access as well as the financial condition of the provider or plan. At the same time, risk adjustment lowers payments or premiums for beneficiaries who are expected to use fewer …

Water Resources Assessment In The Greater Rio Casas Grandes Watershed, Bruce Thomson, Abdul-Mehdi Ali Aug 2007

Water Resources Assessment In The Greater Rio Casas Grandes Watershed, Bruce Thomson, Abdul-Mehdi Ali

Water Resources Field Methods Reports

The Rio Casas Grandes watershed is located in northern Chihuahua, Mexico, on the eastern flank of the Sierra Madres. Like all arid desert regions, this watershed faces problems related to a lack of fresh water. Increasing populations, agriculture, and industry create a challenge to water managers and users in the watershed. Water shortages from drought combined with increased use have caused decreases in water tables as well as increases in the number of fallow fields in the lower reaches of the watershed. Poor land management practices combined with water shortages have the potential to threaten the livelihood of communities within …

The 14N Quadrupole Coupling In Hexamethylene Triperoxide Diamine (Hmtd), John Persons, Gerard S. Harbison Aug 2007

The 14N Quadrupole Coupling In Hexamethylene Triperoxide Diamine (Hmtd), John Persons, Gerard S. Harbison

Gerard S. Harbison Publications

Using high-field NMR, we have determined the magnitude of the nuclear quadrupole interaction in hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD), the explosive allegedly used in the London bombings of July 2005. The experimental quadrupolar coupling constant, 5.334 MHz, is in good agreement with quantum chemical calculations. The predicted single zero-field transition frequency should lie in a relatively empty part of the 14N nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectrum; the spin relaxation rate is reasonably fast.
