Rural Vulnerability And Tea Plantation Migration In Eastern Nepal And Darjeeling, Sarah Besky Sep 2007

Rural Vulnerability And Tea Plantation Migration In Eastern Nepal And Darjeeling, Sarah Besky

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

This paper will analyze migration from rural eastern Nepal to tea plantations in eastern Nepal and Darjeeling and the potentials such migration might represent for coping with rural vulnerability and food scarcity. I will contextualize this paper in a regional history of agricultural intensification and migration, which began in the eighteenth century with Gorkhali conquests of todays Mechi region and continued in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with the recruitment of plantation laborers from Nepal to British India. For many Kiranti ethnic groups, agricultural intensification resulted in social marginalization, land degradation due to over-population and over-farming, and eventual migration to …

A 17-Year Longitudinal Study Of Spiritual Development And Psychological Correlates In A Sample Of College Students, Jeremy Daniel Bartz Sep 2007

A 17-Year Longitudinal Study Of Spiritual Development And Psychological Correlates In A Sample Of College Students, Jeremy Daniel Bartz

Theses and Dissertations

In 1984, 1987 and 2001 data were collected on a religiously devout group of college students in an effort to better understand the process of religious development and the relationship between religiosity and mental health. This study analyzes that data by examining the stability of two different religious development styles that were identified in 1984, the stability of religious motivations over the course of adulthood, and the relationship between devoutness and psychopathology. This study found that (a) the religious developmental styles did not remain consistent from 1984 to 2001, (b) the participants' religious motivations remained stable over the course of …

Parasitic nematodes that cause elephantiasis and river blindness threaten hundreds of millions of people in the developing world. We have sequenced the ∼90 megabase (Mb) genome of the human filarial parasite Brugia malayi and predict ∼11,500 protein coding genes in 71 Mb of robustly assembled sequence. Comparative analysis with the free-living, model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans revealed that, despite these genes having maintained little conservation of local synteny during ∼350 million years of evolution, they largely remain in linkage on chromosomal units. More than 100 conserved operons were identified. Analysis of the predicted proteome provides evidence for adaptations of B. malayi …

Economic Inequality In The Democratic' Nepal: Dimensions And Implications', Udaya R. Wagle Sep 2007

Economic Inequality In The Democratic' Nepal: Dimensions And Implications', Udaya R. Wagle

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Reports indicate increasing economic inequality in Nepal during the era of parliamentary democracy begun in 1990. The extent and the mechanisms by which this increase has occurred are not fully understood, however. Using micro level survey data on consumption expenditures, incomes, and wealth, this paper finds large and slightly increasing economic inequality between 1996 and 2004. Income from house rental, employment, businesses, and remittances as well as the stock of wealth in real estate and housing and businesses are the leading sources of inequality. Horizontal and vertical inequalities have increased along the caste/ethnic and spatial lines, providing a strong impetus …

Political Participation And Civic Literacy In Bajung: An Empirical Study With Correlation Analysis, Khadga K.C. Sep 2007

Political Participation And Civic Literacy In Bajung: An Empirical Study With Correlation Analysis, Khadga K.C.

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

A certain minimum level of political knowledge is required in democracy. The political knowledge increases political literacy and competence which fosters citizens engagement in associations, and their participation in politics. 'There is near universal agreement that more knowledgeable people participate at a much higher rate '(Pop kin and Dimock 1999; 137). Also, 'We know that decline in political knowledge and voter turn out has coincided with a rise in educational level a surprising fact since more educated persons tend not only to be more knowledgeable but to vote more (Nie, Junn, and Stehl-Barry 1996:34). Similarly, 'If we control for socioeconomic …

Trade Potentility And Ecological Analysis Of Ntfps In Himalayan Kingdom Of Nepal, Krishna Lal Poudel

Non-timber Forest Products (NTFPs) have been welfare, subsistence or livelihood commodity since long; these are traditional source of food, fiber, medicine, etc. In some rural hilly areas, it contributes up to 50 % of total annual family income. NTFPs sub-sector in Nepal contributes about 5 % of national GDP out of total estimation of about 15 % from the whole forestry sector (almost 1/3). More than 100 types of plant species are harvested from the wild and traded to international market mostly to India; 95 % of the NTFPs are collected from the wild and 90 % are exported to …

Domestic Health Hazard And Indoor Air-Pollution: An Approach To Find Alternative Energy Source For Rural Bangladesh To Minimize The Threat, Reazul S.M. Ahsan, Jinia Afrin Sep 2007

Domestic Health Hazard And Indoor Air-Pollution: An Approach To Find Alternative Energy Source For Rural Bangladesh To Minimize The Threat, Reazul S.M. Ahsan, Jinia Afrin

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Indoor air pollution and health hazards for women and child especially in the developing countries have been overlooked for decades. It happened because there was no specific indoor pollution standard and alternative energy solution to minimize the indoor gaseous emissions at the domestic end-use level of energy. Traditional biomass fuel is one of the major sources of energy in the developing countries. About 2.4 billion people rely on traditional biomass, mainly for cooking and heating as they have limited access to better alternative energy sources like Natural Gas or Electricity. In Bangladesh per capita energy consumption is only 8.83 GJ …

New Developments In Selenium Biochemistry: Selenocysteine Biosynthesis In Eukaryotes And Archaea, Xue-Ming Xu, Bradley A. Carlson, Yan Zhang, Heiko Mix, Gregory V. Kryukov, Richard S. Glass, Marla J. Berry, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield Sep 2007

New Developments In Selenium Biochemistry: Selenocysteine Biosynthesis In Eukaryotes And Archaea, Xue-Ming Xu, Bradley A. Carlson, Yan Zhang, Heiko Mix, Gregory V. Kryukov, Richard S. Glass, Marla J. Berry, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

We used comparative genomics and experimental analyses to show that (1) eukaryotes and archaea, which possess the selenocysteine (Sec) protein insertion machinery contain an enzyme, O-phosphoseryl-transfer RNA (tRNA) [Ser]Sec kinase (designated PSTK), which phosphorylates seryl-tRNA [Ser]Sec to form O-phosphoseryl-tRNA [Ser]Sec and (2) the Sec synthase (SecS) in mammals is a pyridoxal phosphate-containing protein previously described as the soluble liver antigen (SLA). SecS uses the product of PSTK, Ophosphoseryl- tRNA [Ser]Sec, and selenophosphate as substrates to generate selenocysteyltRNA [Ser]Sec. Sec could be synthesized on tRNA [Ser]Sec from selenide, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and serine using tRNA [Ser]Sec, seryl-tRNA synthetase, …
