Predicting Academic Success In Undergraduates, Mary E. Pritchard, Gregory S. Wilson

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

College academic success and retention have traditionally been predicted using demographic and academic variables. This study investigated the influence of student health on GPA and intent to drop out of college. A longitudinal survey of 242 freshmen revealed that emotional and social factors (e.g., stress, living in the dorm, being in a study group) predicted second semester GPA and intentions to drop out (e.g., perfectionism, fatigue). Implications for intervention strategies are discussed.

Mexico's Implementation Of The Biodiversity Convention And The Catagena Protocol In The Gmo Era: Challenges In Principles, Policies, And Practices, Juan Antonio Herrera Oct 2007

Mexico's Implementation Of The Biodiversity Convention And The Catagena Protocol In The Gmo Era: Challenges In Principles, Policies, And Practices, Juan Antonio Herrera

PhD Dissertations

Recent developments in genetic modification and the use of Living Modified Organisms (LMOs) in agriculture have ignited a debate over the potential effects of these organisms on biological diversity. This controversy materializes in the clash between the international environmental and trade regimes. Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), such as the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) focus on the preservation of biological diversity and, in the case of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (Cartagena Protocol), the safe transfer of LMOs. These Agreements encourage States to base national decisions to allow LMO imports on environmental and risk assessments using the precautionary principle. …

Frequency Of Heavy Drinking And Perceived Peer Alcohol Involvement: Comparison Of Influence And Selection Mechanisms From A Developmental Perspective, Gilbert R. Parra, Jennifer L. Krull, Kenneth J. Sher, Kristina M. Jackson

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The present study investigated social influence and selection explanations for the association between frequency of heavy drinking and perceived peer alcohol involvement in emerging and early adulthood. Participants were 489 young adults recruited from a university setting who were taking part in an 11-year longitudinal study, which includes 6 waves of data. Piecewise latent growth curve analyses indicated that patterns of change from ages 18 to 30 for both frequency of heavy drinking and perceived peer alcohol involvement are best represented by two distinct developmental periods (i.e., college and post-college years). Several models were compared to identify a framework that …

A Review Of The Literature On End-Of-Life Care: Setting A Research Agenda For Maine, Julie T. Fralich Mba, Jennifer D. Lenardson Mhs, Hillary Skillings

Disability & Aging

In 2002, Last Acts, a national campaign of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, issued a report assessing the states on access to end-of-life care and policies supporting its provision. Quite striking for the hospice providers and other stakeholders of Maine, the state ranked second to last in hospice use among persons over age 65 in their last year of life. Although anecdotal and unpublished data suggest that hospice use is on the rise in Maine, concerns about the low use rate remains a concern to those interested in end-of-life care in the State.

In order to better understand the factors …

Natural Path To The Understanding And Use Of Accounting: Barter Bookkeeping And The Double Entry System, The Case Of Benjamin Barns Sayle, Laura Jean Kreissl Oct 2007

Natural Path To The Understanding And Use Of Accounting: Barter Bookkeeping And The Double Entry System, The Case Of Benjamin Barns Sayle, Laura Jean Kreissl

Accounting Historians Notebook

Barter bookkeeping was employed well into the 20th Century in some rural communities of the U.S. Those who used it often did so because it was adequate for their needs, not because they were unfamiliar with the double entry system. One such individual, Benjamin Barns Sayle, employed both systems simultaneously, to address the needs of his different enterprises. His story and records illustrate an almost natural progression in the understanding and use of accounting records from the limited, simple but effective barter bookkeeping system to the more expansive double entry system by individuals. Sayle's experiences suggest that by emphasizing familiar …
