Rural After-School Programs: Meeting The Needs Of At-Risk Youth And Their Families, Bethany L. Letiecq, Sandra J. Bailey Oct 2007

Rural After-School Programs: Meeting The Needs Of At-Risk Youth And Their Families, Bethany L. Letiecq, Sandra J. Bailey

Journal of Youth Development

Extant research has focused on out-of-school time among urban and suburban youth, yet there remains scant information on rural low-income youth and their families. This study examines the salience of after-school programs for rural youth. Using an ecological framework, we assess changes in youth behavior and skill acquisition based on reports from 47 youth attending after-school programs in two rural communities, along with their primary caregivers and teachers. Results indicate enhanced life skills and social behaviors among youth attendees. Implications for future research, programming, and policymaking are discussed.

President Koch and Members of the Board of Regents, Members of the Faculty and Staff, students, alumni and honored guests: Thank you all for coming here today, to share my joy, and Janets, and that of our family on this very special day. Like so many, over many generations -- like many of you — Janet and I chose New Mexico. It's a place we know well, one that I studied, whose biodiversity has fascinated me and helped propel my academic and scientific pursuits. Cultivating Compassion And Youth Action Around The Globe: A Preliminary Report On Jane Goodall’S Roots & Shoots Program, Laura R. Johnson, Julie S. Johnson-Pynn Oct 2007

Cultivating Compassion And Youth Action Around The Globe: A Preliminary Report On Jane Goodall’S Roots & Shoots Program, Laura R. Johnson, Julie S. Johnson-Pynn

Journal of Youth Development

This paper describes a unique service-learning based environmental and humanitarian program for youth, The Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots program (R&S). R&S aims to foster learning, personal growth and civic engagement among youth members through service activities and environmental education. Despite its promise as a youth development program and its rapid expansion into 100 countries, little is known about R&S’s impact on youth development. In this study, we explore R&S programs in China and Tanzania, two countries that are maximally different from the U.S. in important cultural and contextual factors. Through qualitative and quantitative methods we describe the programs, …

Coping With Unreliable Water Supplies And Willingness To Pay For Improved Water Supplies In Kathmandu, Nepal, Hari Katuwal, Alok Bohara Oct 2007

Coping With Unreliable Water Supplies And Willingness To Pay For Improved Water Supplies In Kathmandu, Nepal, Hari Katuwal, Alok Bohara

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Adequacy and quality are crucial for household water supply. One of the major problems with public utilities such as drinking water in developing countries is intermittent, insufficient and unreliable supply. Nepal is no exception to this. Water is not supplied round the clock, pressure is insufficient to pump it to the tap and the amount of water made available to the public, whatsoever, is not directly potable. To combat these problems, households engage in a variety of coping behaviors. Some of the major strategies for coping with intermittent and unreliable water supply are collecting, pumping, storing, treating and purchasing. This …

The Effect Of Remittances On Child Labor And Child Education In Nepal, Michael Milligan, Alok Bohara Oct 2007

The Effect Of Remittances On Child Labor And Child Education In Nepal, Michael Milligan, Alok Bohara

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Remittances from international sources form an important part of the typical Nepalese households income. We analyze the effects of household international remittance and non-remittance income on educational achievement and the amount of child labor using Heckman's two-step analysis. For the analysis of educational achievement, the ratio of years of schooling to age is the independent regression variable, and a dummy variable representing whether or not the child has attended school at all is used as the select variable. For the analysis of child labor, the number off hours spent working in the labor force is the regression independent variable and …

Developmentally-Responsive Relationships During After School, Dana R. Fusco Oct 2007

Developmentally-Responsive Relationships During After School, Dana R. Fusco

Journal of Youth Development

Research has shown that afterschool programs are effective in improving academic performance, helping children develop better work habits and social skills, reducing the likelihood of at-risk behaviors, and decreasing school-based crime. Many agree that such results would not be prominent if it weren’t for the supportive nature of children’s relationships with staff. This manuscript presents a theoretical understanding of the connection between relationships and human growth and development. Observations of outstanding youth workers will show how relationships are used to leverage the development of young people. The author also provides a model of adult-as-community-builder that elaborates the specific methods by …

Optimal Propensity Score Stratification, Jessica A. Myers, Thomas A. Louis Oct 2007

Optimal Propensity Score Stratification, Jessica A. Myers, Thomas A. Louis

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Stratifying on propensity score in observational studies of treatment is a common technique used to control for bias in treatment assignment; however, there have been few studies of the relative efficiency of the various ways of forming those strata. The standard method is to use the quintiles of propensity score to create subclasses, but this choice is not based on any measure of performance either observed or theoretical. In this paper, we investigate the optimal subclassification of propensity scores for estimating treatment effect with respect to mean squared error of the estimate. We consider the optimal formation of subclasses within …

Distribution Of Substance Abuse Treatment Facilities Across The Rural-Urban Continuum [Working Paper], John A. Gale Ms, Jennifer D. Lenardson Mhs Oct 2007

Distribution Of Substance Abuse Treatment Facilities Across The Rural-Urban Continuum [Working Paper], John A. Gale Ms, Jennifer D. Lenardson Mhs

Mental Health / Substance Use Disorders

Released in June 2008, this study examines the distribution of substance abuse treatment services across the continuum of rural and urban counties, identifying the type and intensity of services provided. Using the 2004 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services linked to the 2003 Rural-Urban Continuum Codes, we found few substance abuse treatment facilities operating outside of urban and rural adjacent areas and limited availability of intensive services across rural areas. This situation is particularly striking for opioid treatment programs, which are nearly absent in rural areas. The narrow range of services available in rural areas may preclude an individualized …
