A Review Of Motivation In Youth Sports: Review Of Reversal Achievement Goal Theories, Amel Muhamedagic Jan 2007

A Review Of Motivation In Youth Sports: Review Of Reversal Achievement Goal Theories, Amel Muhamedagic

Graduate Research Papers

Motivation is a key underlying determinant for any given human behavior. Without motivation the human species would cease to live. Above and beyond the basic physiological needs humans are motivated to meet (i.e., hunger, safety, and shelter), many individuals are also motivated to meet higher order needs (i.e., the need to belong, the need for high self esteem, or the need for love) (Naime, 2006). One such example of a "higher order" need that many individuals are motivated to meet is participation in sports. Individuals are motivated by different needs and different motives. Motivation can be described as something that …

A Review Of The Literature Related To Pregnant Adolescents And Their Use Of Doulas As Childbirth Support, Janet Hunter Jan 2007

A Review Of The Literature Related To Pregnant Adolescents And Their Use Of Doulas As Childbirth Support, Janet Hunter

Graduate Research Papers

According to Bachman (1993), "Childbirth is now lonelier and more psychologically stressful than in the past," especially for adolescents. Today, nurses have found themselves farther from the bedside because of the increase in technology and the way shifts are staffed. Over-crowded maternity clinics and short hospital stays have given nurses little or no time to provide health education and information to the high-risk population of pregnant teens (Bachman, 1993). The caring and nurturing touch of nurses can often be overshadowed by these changes (Herrick & Perez, 1998). Perhaps, because of the nurse's busy schedule, women rate a partner's presence as …

Meeting The Needs Of The Adult Learner In The Instructional Design Environment, Takeisha Henfield Jan 2007

Meeting The Needs Of The Adult Learner In The Instructional Design Environment, Takeisha Henfield

Graduate Research Papers

There are an increasing number of adults who are seeking further education and training for various purposes, ranging from English as a Second Language to doctoral degrees. These adults possess different characteristics and require different conditions than traditional younger learners. In an effort to design effective instruction for adults as learners, the basic instructional design process should be understood. Through that understanding, a taxonomy of instructional design models as well as specific models can be discussed. The knowledge of adults' learning needs, plus an understanding of instructional design and its models, can help instructional designers produce more effective instruction for …

An Empirical Investigation Of The Role Of The Accountant In The Implementation Of An Integrated System: A Case Study In Cork County Council., Julie Griffin

Theses

The last decade has been a lime of continuous rapid change in the business environment. To survive in this environment, organisations have had to become more competitive and customer focussed. The promised benefits of integrated systems made their implementation a popular attempt at achieving success in the private sector. The implementation process for, and the benefits of integrated systems in the private sector are well documented.

Integrated systems are still a relatively new phenomenon in the public sector. The researcher was working, as an accountant, in Cork County Council, when it was tendering for and implementing a new integrated system. …

A Moratorium On Intersex Surgeries?: Law, Science, Identity, And Bioethics At The Crossroads, Laura D. Hermer Jan 2007

A Moratorium On Intersex Surgeries?: Law, Science, Identity, And Bioethics At The Crossroads, Laura D. Hermer

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article critiques proposals to legally restrict cosmetic genital surgeries on intersex children, arguing that such bans are premature and counterproductive. It advocates for informed consent and caution, emphasizing the need for comprehensive information and support for parents rather than outright prohibition. The author contends that current data do not conclusively show these surgeries are ineffective or unethical and that banning them could hinder scientific research and set problematic precedents for other medical decisions.

Makeup For Success: Why Jespersen V. Harrah's Stifles Diversity By Promoting Stereotypes In Employment, Alison J. Hartwell Jan 2007

Makeup For Success: Why Jespersen V. Harrah's Stifles Diversity By Promoting Stereotypes In Employment, Alison J. Hartwell

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that the Ninth Circuit's decision in Jespersen v. Harrah's Operating Co. undermines efforts to promote diversity by upholding employer grooming policies that reinforce gender stereotypes. It contends that the court failed to adequately address how such policies perpetuate discrimination and limit opportunities for employees who do not conform to traditional gender norms.

"We're Here To Protect Democracy. We're Not Here To Practice It": The U.S. Military's Involvement In Trafficking In Persons And Suggestions For The Future, Jorene Soto Jan 2007

"We're Here To Protect Democracy. We're Not Here To Practice It": The U.S. Military's Involvement In Trafficking In Persons And Suggestions For The Future, Jorene Soto

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that the U.S. military has historically been complicit in human trafficking, particularly through its involvement in prostitution near overseas bases, and that current legal and policy measures fail to adequately address this issue. While laws like the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) and the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) provide some framework, enforcement and penalties are insufficient to deter military personnel from contributing to trafficking. The article calls for stronger legal policies, enhanced education, and stricter penalties to combat this issue effectively.

Women And Weight-Based Employment Discrimination, Alexandra W. Griffin Jan 2007

Women And Weight-Based Employment Discrimination, Alexandra W. Griffin

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that weight-based employment discrimination disproportionately affects women, contributing significantly to the gender wage gap. It advocates for recognizing this issue as a feminist concern and urges the use of existing legal frameworks and social change to address it.

Beyond Protective Orders: Interdisciplinary Domestic Violence Clinics Facilitate Social Change, Sara R. Benson Jan 2007

Beyond Protective Orders: Interdisciplinary Domestic Violence Clinics Facilitate Social Change, Sara R. Benson

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that interdisciplinary domestic violence clinics in law schools offer a transformative approach to addressing domestic violence by integrating legal and extra-legal services. These clinics not only provide holistic support to survivors but also empower them to advocate for systemic change. By fostering collaboration among law students, social workers, psychologists, and community organizations, such clinics address the multifaceted needs of survivors while training future lawyers to approach legal issues with a broader societal perspective. The article highlights the potential of these clinics to drive social progress by amplifying the voices of survivors and influencing legal and community responses …

Sex Required: The Impact Of Massachusetts' Same-Sex Marriage Cases On Marriages With Intersex And Transsexual Partners, Aleks Kajstura Jan 2007

Sex Required: The Impact Of Massachusetts' Same-Sex Marriage Cases On Marriages With Intersex And Transsexual Partners, Aleks Kajstura

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that the Census Bureau's practice of counting incarcerated individuals as residents of their prison locations, rather than their home communities, distorts political representation by inflating the voting power of districts with prisons and diluting that of others, undermining the principle of "one person, one vote."

Rembrandts In The Research Lab: Why Universities Should Take A Lesson From Big Business To Increase Innovation, Kristen Jakobsen Osenga Jan 2007

Rembrandts In The Research Lab: Why Universities Should Take A Lesson From Big Business To Increase Innovation, Kristen Jakobsen Osenga

Law Faculty Publications

In this Article, I argue that patents, if obtained and exploited strategically, can have a beneficial effect on university research. I will describe the barriers to university participation in the patent arena-that is, lack of money, lack of knowledge, lack of infrastructure, and cultural concerns-and explain, with reference to business, how and why universities need to overcome these barriers. By breaking down these barriers and ably exploiting their intellectual property, I argue that the obstacles to university research will be lessened, resulting in increased research and innovation. I further provide a primer to provide university administrators, technology transfer offices, and …
