Pakistan’S External Sector, Ishrat Husain Dr. Jan 2007

Pakistan’S External Sector, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Recent media reports, commentators and editorials have raised questions about the growing trade deficit faced by Pakistan in the current fiscal year, as well as, about the rise in the absolute level of External Debt. In raising these issues a serious concern has been expressed about Pakistan’s ability to pay its external obligations and the impact on foreign reserves in the future. Alternatively, it is argued, that these obligations can be paid only by incurring higher debt from abroad and thus increasing debt burden.

Pandemic Influenza: Ethics, Law, And The Public's Health, Lawrence O. Gostin, Benjamin E. Berkman Jan 2007

Pandemic Influenza: Ethics, Law, And The Public's Health, Lawrence O. Gostin, Benjamin E. Berkman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Highly pathogenic Influenza (HPAI) has captured the close attention of policy makers who regard pandemic influenza as a national security threat. Although the prevalence is currently very low, recent evidence that the 1918 pandemic was caused by an avian influenza virus lends credence to the theory that current outbreaks could have pandemic potential. If the threat becomes a reality, massive loss of life and economic disruption would ensue. Therapeutic countermeasures (e.g., vaccines and antiviral medications) and public health interventions (e.g., infection control, social separation, and quarantine) form the two principal strategies for prevention and response, both of which present formidable …

Exploration Of Computational Methods For Classification Of Movement Intention During Human Voluntary Movement From Single Trial Eeg, Ou Bai, Peter Lin, Sherry Vorbach, Jiang Li, Steve Furlani, Mark Hallett

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Objective: To explore effective combinations of computational methods for the prediction of movement intention preceding the production of self-paced right and left hand movements from single trial scalp electroencephalogram (EEG).

Methods: Twelve naïve subjects performed self-paced movements consisting of three key strokes with either hand. EEG was recorded from 128 channels. The exploration was performed offline on single trial EEG data. We proposed that a successful computational procedure for classification would consist of spatial filtering, temporal filtering, feature selection, and pattern classification. A systematic investigation was performed with combinations of spatial filtering using principal component analysis (PCA), independent component analysis …

During the pre-survey, the pharmacists in the Intervention Group received an informational sheet which contained information on a non-punitive culture as well as information …

The Preliminary Impact Of 2001 Florida Tort Reform On Nursing Facility Litigation In One County, Deborah K. Hedgecock Jan 2007

The Preliminary Impact Of 2001 Florida Tort Reform On Nursing Facility Litigation In One County, Deborah K. Hedgecock

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since a substantial increase in lawsuits, settlements, jury trial awards, and insurance premiums involving nursing facilities began in the mid 1990s, addressing litigation has been a growing concern for the industry, consumers and their families, insurance carriers, and state and national elected officials. Curbing lawsuit growth has mirrored medical malpractice containment efforts, focusing on the addition of laws to inhibit litigation. The state of Florida initiated such tort reforms along with mandatory increased nursing facility staffing in 2001. Through secondary data analyses, this study examined the initial effects of Florida's tort reform measures. Lawsuits filed (N = 546) against any …

Testing Impulsivity As A Moderator Of Smoking Motivation Following Exposure To Negative Affect And Smoking Cues, Erika B. Litvin Jan 2007

Testing Impulsivity As A Moderator Of Smoking Motivation Following Exposure To Negative Affect And Smoking Cues, Erika B. Litvin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Consistent with classical conditioning theories of drug use, previous research has demonstrated that presenting smokers with either exteroceptive (e.g., pictures of cigarettes) or interoceptive (e.g., negative affect) cues results in increased motivation to smoke, as measured by urge and smoking topography (e.g., shorter latency to begin smoking). However, few studies have presented both types of cues to determine whether and how they might interact in the production of smoking motivation, and little research has focused on identifying potential moderators of cue reactivity. In a randomized 2 x 2 crossed factorial between-subjects design, the current study tested whether an interoceptive cue …

Fabrication: Corporate And Governmental Crime In The Apparel Industry, Danielle Mcgurrin Jan 2007

Fabrication: Corporate And Governmental Crime In The Apparel Industry, Danielle Mcgurrin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine both the gendered and racialized nature of workplace risk and compensation in the manufacturing industry of apparel. The author selects this industry because of its low-wage, labor intensive, and "deskilled" work, performed in often unsafe employment environments with minimal governmental regulations and limited unionization. The apparel industry is also characterized by its large percentage of racial and ethnic minorities, especially immigrant employees, that further disadvantage them in terms of communication barriers, threat of deportation, and the multiple and intersecting marginalizations associated with occupying a low-wage, minority and/or immigrant status. The gendered effects …

Integrative Collaborative Activities: Public Deliberation With Stakeholder Processes, National Policy Consensus Center Jan 2007

Integrative Collaborative Activities: Public Deliberation With Stakeholder Processes, National Policy Consensus Center

National Policy Consensus Center Publications

Collaborative governance is the process of public, private, and non-profit sectors jointly developing solutions to public problems.

This process—convening people from different sectors to work together on a shared issue—can yield the best solutions to public problems. Research and experience show that solutions created in a collaborative governance process are “better informed, stronger in concept and content, and more likely to be implemented,” according to Terry Amsler, Director of the Collaborative Governance Initiative.

These solutions go beyond what any one sector could achieve on its own. They are more lasting and effective than solutions from traditional approaches. They are more …

Nuclear Localization Of Hbd-1 In Human Keratinocytes, Roger J Bick, Brian J Poindexter, L Maximilian Buja, Carl H Lawyer, Stephen M Milner, Satyanarayan Bhat

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

OBJECTIVE: Human defensins and cathelicidins are a family of cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), which play multiple roles in both innate and adaptive immune systems. They have direct antimicrobial activity against several microorganisms including burn pathogens. The majority of components of innate and adaptive immunity either express naturally occurring defensins or are otherwise chemoattracted or functionally affected by them. They also enhance adaptive immunity and wound healing and alter antibody production. All mechanisms to explain multiple functions of AMPs are not clearly understood. Prior studies to localize defensins in normal and burned skin using deconvolution fluorescence scanning microscopy indicate localization of …

Does Time Really Slow Down During A Frightening Event?, Chess Stetson, Matthew P Fiesta, David M Eagleman Jan 2007

Does Time Really Slow Down During A Frightening Event?, Chess Stetson, Matthew P Fiesta, David M Eagleman

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Observers commonly report that time seems to have moved in slow motion during a life-threatening event. It is unknown whether this is a function of increased time resolution during the event, or instead an illusion of remembering an emotionally salient event. Using a hand-held device to measure speed of visual perception, participants experienced free fall for 31 m before landing safely in a net. We found no evidence of increased temporal resolution, in apparent conflict with the fact that participants retrospectively estimated their own fall to last 36% longer than others' falls. The duration dilation during a frightening event, and …

Health Promotion In Thailand: From The Declaration Of Alma-Ata To The Healthy Thailand Policy, Pasitpon Vatcharavongvan

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Most Thai people assume incorrectly that substantial health promotion in Thailand started with the Ottawa Charter inaugurated in 1986. In fact, Thailand has a long history of health promotion. This article presented a history of health promotion in Thailand from before and after declaration of Alma-Ata to the advent of Healthy Thailand policy. It was found that a history of Thailand health promotion stemmed substantially with the foundation of the Ministry of Public health in 1942. Health promotion projects were implemented through national health development plans. The declaration of Alma-Ata, the Ottawa Charter, and the Bangkok Charter obviously influenced a …

Maternal Risk Factors Associated With Low Birth Weight In Karachi: A Case-Control Study, S A. Rizvi, J Hatcher, I Jehan, R Qureshi

Community Health Sciences

To evaluate maternal risk factors associated with low birth weight (LBW) among women aged 15-35 years, we carried out a hospital-based, case-control study on 262 cases (mothers of neonates weighing < or = 2.5 kg) and 262 controls (mothers of neonates weighing > 2.5 kg). Odds of delivering a low-birth-weight baby decreased with increase in maternal haemoglobin [odds ratio (OR): 0.701; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.62-0.79]. Odds were greater among mothers not using iron supplements during pregnancy (OR: 2.88; 95% CI: 1.83-4.54). Mothers of LBW babies had lower haemoglobin levels before delivery.

Play Behaviors On Outdoor Play Structures, Angela Dawn Rodriquez

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to assess children's free play preferences on outdoor play structures. Many contemporary children are not merely deprived of play but are essentially deprived of the healthiest and richest forms of play. The richest forms are described by children as the most fun, the most exciting, the most interesting, and by theorists and writers are described as "deep play". Deep play is defined as nonliteral behavior, and a transformation of reality Mannell, & Klieber, 1997. This study focused on children's social, cognitive and non-play behaviors that they participated in on play structures.

These deep play …

School Psychology Shortage And Urban/Rural Differences, Melissa Marie Hickman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There is a documented shortage of school psychologists. Various factors contribute to this shortage including: (a) attrition, (b) the public's lack of knowledge about the profession, and ( c) stressors on the job. A continued shortage could have negative implications for the profession as well as students and schools by lowering standards for credentialing school psychologists. This paper will review literature on several factors that may influence the shortage. Historical trends and demographics of school psychologists will also be addressed. In particular, research and speculations concerning differences between the practice of rural and urban school psychologists will be discussed.
