The Home Use Of Antibacterial Hand Soap Among Women In Clark County, Nevada, Rachel Marie Walker
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The use of antibacterial products in the home is increasing. The broad-based use of these products may lead to antibiotic resistance and adverse health effects of the user due to exposure to the active ingredient(s). A cross-sectional study of Clark County, Nevada women was conducted to examine the relationship between the use of antibacterial soap in the homes of women who reside in Clark County and their knowledge regarding the negative side effects that could result from the use of antibacterial products, especially those containing triclosan; A survey was used to determine: (1) the reason women are using antibacterial products …
Suicide By Firearm, Suicide Fatality, And Firearm Availability, Andrea Wallick
Suicide By Firearm, Suicide Fatality, And Firearm Availability, Andrea Wallick
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study has three objectives. The first two objectives are to determine if neighborhood level gun availability has an effect on suicide method and suicide fatality. The third is to test that para-suicides (i.e., attempted suicides) with a mental disorder are more likely than para-suicides without a mental disorder to attempt suicide by firearm. Neighborhood is defined by zip code. The number of homicides for each zip code divided by the number of firearm related homicides in each zip code is used as a proxy for neighborhood level gun availability. Data on suicides and para-suicides occurring in Chicago front 1990-1997 …

Baselining Carbon Dioxide Emissions Of Las Vegas Metropolitan Area Residential Building Sector, Abhilasha Wadhwa
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This research aims to baseline the annual energy consumption and resulting carbon dioxide emissions from the residential sector of Las Vegas Metropolitan Area. The study institutes an operative database of individual energy consumption patterns and also derives the correlation between age of dwellings and their consumption. Finally, it evaluates the reductions needed in energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions to meet the Kyoto Protocol targets for 2012; The first part of the research synthesizes electricity and gas consumption data for 2005 obtained from the respective utility providers. Using this, the latest consumption trends are consolidated to create a baseline against …
Exploring Adolescent Inner Experience, Sarah A Akhter
Exploring Adolescent Inner Experience, Sarah A Akhter
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Adolescence famously is known as a time of storm and stress, hormones, and crises of identity, yet psychology knows remarkably little about adolescents' actual inner experience. This study aimed to describe the actual phenomenology of adolescent inner experience by using Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES) with a sample of six adolescents aged 11--14 years. Each wore a random beeper in his/her natural everyday environments for five days. They observed the phenomenology of their inner experience each time the beeper sounded and described that inner experience to the investigators in expositional interviews. We found substantial differences in the complexity of inner experience …

College Students And Voter Mobilization Campaigns : A Grounded Communication Theory For Increasing Political Efficacy And Involvement, Vanessa M. Robinson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study examined which channels, messages, and sources were most effective in increasing political involvement among college students. Political participation among college students has decreased in every election since eighteen year- olds were given the right to vote. Numerous campaigns targeted to increase political participation among college students have been implemented but there is no evidence that these campaigns have been effective.
This study developed a grounded theory for increasing political participation among college students l;!ased on several focus group interactions. Students were asked to report on which channels, messages and sources they currently received political information from and were …

Integrating Smoking Cessation Into Daily Nursing Practice, Registered Nurses' Association Of Ontario
General Submissions: Community and Population-based Materials
This best practice guideline is intended to provide direction to nurses during daily practice in all care settings, both institutional and community. This guideline does not describe in-depth interventions for special populations such as youths, although the recommendations may also be applied to this group. This guideline contains recommendations for all Registered Nurses (RNs) and Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs). It is acknowledged that the individual competency of nurses varies between individuals and across categories of nursing professionals, and is based on knowledge, skills, attitudes and judgment, enhanced over time by experience and education.

Applying The Human Capital Method And The Concept Of Preference In The Health Care Sector, Marcin Czech, Zofia Skrzypczak
European Management Studies
Economic theories, concepts and models have been applied to a growing scale in new branches of life, as well as various segments and sectors of the economy. The objective of the article has been to present the Human Capital Theory and the theory of consumer's behaviour, both present in the economy for decades, included in the canon of the economic thought, subject to numerous discussions and polemics among the economists, and to show the ways of applying these theories in selected analyses concerned with the health sector. Particular emphasis has been on the selected pharmacoeconomic analyses (pharmacoeconomics), in which the …

Alleviating Skin Picking Behavior In Prader-Willi Syndrome Using Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors And Topiramate: A Review Of The Literature, Jessica M. Blurton
Alleviating Skin Picking Behavior In Prader-Willi Syndrome Using Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors And Topiramate: A Review Of The Literature, Jessica M. Blurton
Modern Psychological Studies
This paper discusses what is known currently about treating skin picking behavior in people with Prader-Willi Syndrome using Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors and topiramate. Because of small samples and flawed methodology it is argued that the advantages and disadvantages of either drug therapy are not fully known at this time, but that future research is strongly indicated. Some suggestions for further studies are discussed.

Dietary Patterns And Breast Cancer Risk In The Shanghai Breast Cancer Study, Xiaohui Cui, Qi Dai, Marilyn Tseng, Xiao-Ou Shu, Yu-Tang Gao, Wei Zheng
Kinesiology and Public Health
The association of breast cancer with dietary patterns such as a western diet has not been studied in Asian women. We examined this among Shanghai Breast Cancer Study participants. Cases were of ages 25 to 64 years, diagnosed 08/1996-03/ 1998, and identified through a rapid case ascertainment system supplemented by the Shanghai Cancer Registry. Controls, selected from the general population of urban Shanghai, were frequency matched to cases by 5-year age group. Participants provided information on diet, lifestyle, and reproductive factors. In principal component analysis among 1,556 controls, two patterns emerged. a ‘‘vegetable-soy’’ pattern (tofu, cauliflower, beans, bean sprouts, green …

Dietary Intake And Breast Density In High-Risk Women: A Cross-Sectional Study, Marilyn Tseng, Celia Byrne, Kathryn A. Evers, Mary B. Daly
Kinesiology and Public Health
Background Women with a family history of breast cancer may be at higher risk for breast cancer, but few previous studies evaluating diet and breast cancer have focused on such women. The objective of the present study was to determine whether diet, a modifiable risk factor, is related to breast density among women at high genetic risk for breast cancer. Methods Women with at least one first-degree or second-degree relative with breast cancer or ovarian cancer participating in the Fox Chase Cancer Center Family Risk Assessment Program completed health history and food frequency questionnaires and received standard screening mammograms. Cranial–caudal …

Individual Differences In Well-Being In Older Breast Cancer Survivors, Elizabeth A. Perkins, Brent J. Small, Lodovico Balducci, Martine Extermann, Claire Robb, William E. Haley
Epidemiology: Faculty Publications (2002-2018)
Older women who survive breast cancer may differ significantly in their long-term well-being. Using a risk and protective factors model, we studied predictors of well-being in 127 women age 70 and above with a history of at least one year's survival of breast cancer. Mean post-cancer survivorship was 5.1 years. Using life satisfaction, depression and general health perceptions as outcome variables, we assessed whether demographic variables, cancer-related variables, health status and psychosocial resources predicted variability in well-being using correlational and hierarchical regression analyses. Higher age predicted increased depression but was not associated with life satisfaction or general health perceptions. Cancer-related …

Procedural Injustice: How The Practices And Procedures Of The Child Welfare System Disempower Parents And Why It Matters, Vivek Sankaran, Itzhak Lander
Articles
Many of us appear surprised when families involved in the child protective system do not reunify. A parent’s path to reunification seems straightforward. Upon a finding of neglect, the court prescribes a basic regimen, typically consisting of parenting classes, counseling, drug testing, and a psychological evaluation, that a parent must fulfill prior to having the child returned to his/her custody. If a parent successfully completes these seemingly minimal requirements, the law requires reunification unless the return poses a “substantial risk of harm” to the child. With such high stakes involved, a clearly defined path for success, and the prospect of …
Does Nonprofit Ownership Matter?, Jill R. Horwitz
Does Nonprofit Ownership Matter?, Jill R. Horwitz
Articles
In recent years, policymakers have increasingly questioned whether nonprofit institutions, particularly hospitals, merit tax exemption. They argue that nonprofit hospitals differ little from their for-profit counterparts in the provision of charity care and, therefore, should either lose their tax-exempt status or adhere to new, strict, and specific requirements to provide free services for the poor. In this Article, I present evidence that hospital ownership-whether it is for-profit, nonprofit, or government owned-has a significant effect on the mix of medical services it offers. Despite notoriously weak enforcement mechanisms, nonprofit hospitals act in the public interest by providing services that are unlikely …
