Organizational Commitment And Generational Differences In Nursing Faculty, Lara Lynn Carver Jan 2007

Organizational Commitment And Generational Differences In Nursing Faculty, Lara Lynn Carver

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

We are in the midst of a well documented worldwide shortage of nurses due, in part to a shortage of nursing faculty to educate them. The causes of the faculty shortage are complex including more attractive career opportunities for women, low compensation, and increasing faculty retirements. The shortage is expected to worsen in coming years; Aggressive efforts to recruit faculty at a younger age while retaining older faculty have resulted in four generations in the workforce. As recruiting and retention efforts continue, the concept of organizational commitment across generations is important to consider. Research has demonstrated that organizational commitment leads …

Leadership Training And Emotional Intelligence In School Nurses, Anne L Diaz Jan 2007

Leadership Training And Emotional Intelligence In School Nurses, Anne L Diaz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Now more than ever, nurses need to be leaders. However, most studies of leadership, whether in nursing, business, or the military, have focused on individuals in administrative positions. School nurses practice in primarily autonomous circumstances, where they need to possess substantial leadership skills and the ability to identify and manage emotions to ensure an optimal educational learning environment for the students under their care; Three leadership theories were combined to form the Emotionally Intelligent Leadership Model as the framework for a leadership training program. This two group before and after quasi-experimental study investigated the effects of a leadership training program …

Idiographic results for each of the 11 participants are provided, including a description of frequent and rare/unique experiences of each participant. These results are followed by between participant nomothetic comparisons. Among the results, it was found that anxious participants experienced more indefinite figure-ground and concrete experiences when compared to controls. Anxious participants are also more likely than controls to engage in negative valence self-evaluations and rate moments as being anxious. There is …

Failure Prediction For Hospitality Firms In Us And Korea Using Logit And Neural Networks Models, Hyewon Youn Jan 2007

Failure Prediction For Hospitality Firms In Us And Korea Using Logit And Neural Networks Models, Hyewon Youn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study developed failure prediction models for Korean and U.S. hospitality firms using logistic regression and artificial neural networks (ANN) techniques; For Korean hospitality firms, the one-variable logit model with interest coverage ratio correctly classified 83.74% of in-sample firms and 76.32% of hold-out firms. The ratio's negative coefficient suggests that low interest coverage of a firm increases its failure probability. To prevent the failures, Korean hospitality firms need to move away from heavily leveraged financial structure. The developed ANN model demonstrated an overall classification rate of 86.18% for in-sample firms and 77.63% for hold-out firms. Empirically, this study shows that …

Episiotomy And Obstetric Trauma In Nevada: Evidence From Linked Hospital Discharge And Birth Data, Gulzar H. Shah, Joseph A. Greenway, Wei Yang

Nevada Journal of Public Health

Based on the perception that episiotomy prevents obstetric trauma, the procedure is liberally performed in U.S. Hospitals. Using linked Nevada Birth Registry and Nevada Impatient Hospital Discharges (2000 to 2005), we applied descriptive analyses and logistic regression to examine the status of Nevada episiotomy practice and its impact on birth trauma for mothers. Of 106,461 vaginal live births, 26,383 (24.8%) episiotomies were conducted. Obstetric trauma rate declined from 5.2% of vaginal deliveries in 2000 to 4.4% in 2005. After statistically controlling for the effect of other risk factors, zero parity, episiotomy, other instrument assisted deliveries, non-MDs as birth attendants, rural …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

School refusal behavior has been researched and discussed within psychological and educational communities for over a century, and family environment has been found to influence such behavior. Specifically, differences have been found with respect to the function of youth school refusal behavior and levels of familial independence, cohesion, and conflict. Parenting styles have also been found to influence the behavior of youth. Authoritative parenting is associated with children who perform well scholastically and exhibit few internalizing or externalizing behaviors. Family environment and parenting styles have not been researched as joint influences on school refusal behavior. This study investigated possible effects …

Analysis Of Iodide And Iodate In Soil And Water, James W Dorman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Halide anions such as iodide have important roles in biological and environmental sciences. Environmental iodine is useful in oceanography and atmospheric studies as well as studies of soils and mineral deposits. The fission product, Iodine-129, is a major concern to the Department of Energy because it is a radiation hazard to the public. Consequently, there is great potential value in examining patterns of iodine migration and sorption near weapons test sites and nuclear waste facilities. Traditional iodide analyses, such as by ion chromatography or ion selective electrode, are generally limited to ppm concentrations. Electrochemical methods are very sensitive but vulnerable …

Living With Dyspareunia: A Qualitative Study, Robyn L Donaldson Jan 2007

Living With Dyspareunia: A Qualitative Study, Robyn L Donaldson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Attempts to fill the gap in knowledge of the psychosocial implications in the lives of women with dyspareunia have (1) been limited to less than a handful of studies, and (2) lack an accurate account from the women themselves as to how they have been impacted. Using a semi-structured interview, women were asked in an open-ended fashion about how having dyspareunia has affected their lives. Grounded theory methodology was utilized to identify emergent themes, their interrelations, and build a meaningful theory of experience of early dyspareunia. Cognitive and behavioral representation in women with dyspareunia from onset of pain to the …

Piscivory By Non-Native Blue Tilapia (Oreochromis Aureus ) In Clark County, Nevada, Shawn C Goodchild Jan 2007

Piscivory By Non-Native Blue Tilapia (Oreochromis Aureus ) In Clark County, Nevada, Shawn C Goodchild

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Fish communities that share an evolutionary history typically have mechanisms to offset impacts presented by other species. Fish, especially non-game species, which are intermingled with non-native species for which they lack a shared history, are often poorly adapted to offset these impacts. Non-native fish affect native fish through predation, competition, displacement, and disease, affects which are often synergistic. Native fish within the Muddy River system (Clark County, Nevada) experienced a precipitous decline in numbers following an illegal introduction of blue tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) during the 1990's. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if tilapia were directly predating upon …

But, only 25.0% of study participants were able to identify HPV as the major cause of …

Parent Psychopathology And Child Perfectionism, Lisa Caitlin Cook Jan 2007

Parent Psychopathology And Child Perfectionism, Lisa Caitlin Cook

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Though perfectionism has been defined and measured in various ways, researchers generally agree that holding excessively high standards for oneself and/or others is central to the construct. Perfectionists are those individuals for whom merely doing well is never good enough. Perfectionism has been associated with many psychological disorders and signs of maladjustment. Though perfectionism is theorized as existing from childhood and onward, much of the research on this construct has used adult samples. Evidence suggests that parents are closely involved in the development of perfectionism in their children. For these reasons, research about perfectionism in children and relevant associations with …

Defining Reality: The Poverty And Welfare Rhetoric Of Lyndon Johnson And Ronald Reagan, Andrea Lyn Finan Jan 2007

Defining Reality: The Poverty And Welfare Rhetoric Of Lyndon Johnson And Ronald Reagan, Andrea Lyn Finan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This project examines the centrality of rhetorical definition in case studies of public argument over U.S. policy on poverty and welfare in the tvventieth century. The starting point is research on presidential rhetoric, wherein one line of inquiry entails the exploration of the "bully pulpit" as an advantage to chief executives seeking to construct perceptions of social reality. Such construction frequently establishes the foundation of an incumbent's persuasive strategies. Utilizing the poverty and welfare rhetoric of Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Reagan, this thesis argues that rhetorical definition was central to presidential rhetoric on these critical social controversies in the 1960s …

The Effect Of Prophylactic Ankle Taping On Valgus Knee Joint Moment During A Side Step Cut-Maneuver, Anthony John House

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Limited research evaluating the influence of prophylactic ankle taping on the lower extremity kinetic chain is available. Ankle and knee injury have been documented during quick deceleration and change in direction while running. Anecdotally, clinicians and researchers suggest that the application of prophylactic ankle taping to limit ankle movement does not translate pathogenic forces to the proximal joints. The purpose was to examine the effects of prophylactic ankle taping on valgus/varus joint moment at the knee during the side step cut-maneuver. Results indicate no significant difference (p-value=.60) between valgus/varus knee joint moment between un-taped and taped conditions; -0.37+/-.5 Nm/kg and …
