Considering The Consequence Of Class: Cross-Class Relationships In Nineteenth Century British Novels, Julie Christine Crow Jan 2007

Considering The Consequence Of Class: Cross-Class Relationships In Nineteenth Century British Novels, Julie Christine Crow

Honors Program Theses

Modem society delights in the mismatched marriage. The most popular and wildly romantic tales trace the courtship of a pair that unites, repudiating any notions of fiscal or social inequality. In contemporary fiction, a prince can marry a commoner, and a man of wealth and prestige may attach himself to a maid, a waitress, or even a hooker. While this ability for romance to transcend class is commonplace in the popular culture of today, it is quite scarce in the literature of nineteenth century England. This adherence to standing is a reflection of the strictly stratified structure of the English …

Everybody's Doing It But Me: Comparing Pluralistic Ignorance Across Behaviors, Katherine S. Corker Jan 2007

Everybody's Doing It But Me: Comparing Pluralistic Ignorance Across Behaviors, Katherine S. Corker

Honors Program Theses

This study examined pluralistic ignorance (PI) for a variety of behaviors and attitudes such as health behaviors ( exercise frequency, fruits and vegetables consumed, personal hygiene, marijuana use), subjective well-being, and television habits. Student and nonstudent participants indicated their, their best friend's, the average student's, and the average American adult's attitudes on various topics (e.g., drugs, personal well-being; Prentice & Miller, 1993) and completed measures of alienation (Dean, 1961 ). Student and nonstudent populations showed PI; however, some items showed greater PI than others. High PI items tended to be health behaviors for the student sample and television habits for …

Meeting The Interests Of Adolescent Females In Physical Education, Sarah Marie Huffer

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this study is to compare the activities of interest of adolescent females in physical education with the types of activities that are provided in their present physical education curriculum at the representative high school. Creating a parallel between activities of interest and activities within physical education curriculums will provide females with more motivation to be physically active while in high school and after they graduate.

The Dynamics Of Social Responsibility: Processes, Positions, And Paths In The Oil And Gas Industry, Paul C. Godfrey Jan 2007

The Dynamics Of Social Responsibility: Processes, Positions, And Paths In The Oil And Gas Industry, Paul C. Godfrey

Faculty Publications

I use corporate strategy concepts and tools to focus on the dynamics of firm social initiatives and actions over time. I examine the different paths and positions taken by firms, and the processes that may underlie such paths and positions. My sample comprises 19 firms in the oil and gas industry, and covers the decade from 1991-2000. I use an exploratory approach that mixes qualitative and quantitative cluster analysis as the primary tools to examine this industry, and to isolate and examine distinct social responsibility positions and paths taken by these firms. I also provide evidence about which theoretical processes …

Psychology

The menopausal transition in human females, which is driven by a loss of cyclic ovarian function, occurs around age 50 and is thought to underlie the emergence of an array of health problems in aging women. Although mice do not undergo a true menopause, female mice exhibit ovarian failure long before death because of chronological age and subsequently develop many of the same age-associated health complications observed in postmenopausal women. Here we show in mice that inactivation of the proapoptotic Sax gene, which sustains ovarian lifespan into advanced age, extends fertile potential and minimizes many age-related health problems, including bone …

Theses

In this new era of globalization, the competition among multi-national corporations in various industries is tighter than ever. Due to this intense struggle for corporations to grow their bottom line, the corporations have recognized that a new approach to business is necessary. Corporations have realized that they can no longer just think about their economical profitability to survive in this environment, but they also have to be good stewards to the people they employ and be conscious of the impact the corporation's daily operations have on the environment. Because of this new found recognition, corporations have started using phrases such …

Identifying University Minors To Support The Construction Specialization Area Within A Civil Engineering Technology Program, Vernon Lewis, Carol Considine Jan 2007

Identifying University Minors To Support The Construction Specialization Area Within A Civil Engineering Technology Program, Vernon Lewis, Carol Considine

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Construction programs at many universities are diversified and provide students with opportunities to examine topic areas that include mechanical and electrical systems, safety, business administration, residential construction, real estate, and management. It is impossible for small civil engineering technology programs with a construction emphasis to encompass all of these expertise areas. As industry looks for students with a knowledge base in these areas, it is incumbent upon programs to find avenues to provide these educational opportunities to their students.

To meet the upper division general education requirements for Old Dominion University, students must have either a minor, second major or …

Turning The Health Professional Carousel: Is Canada Undermining Human Rights In Developing Countries?, Karinne Lantz

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

This article will address the issue of health professional migration, with a specific focus on how this migration affects health systems in developing countries. The central question being examined is whether or not states have an obligation to ensure that their policies – or actions by private actors based in their states – do not undermine the delivery of healthcare in other states. After exploring this obligation, this article will analyze how the issue may be effectively addressed by drawing upon the experience of the United Kingdom; how successful has the U.K. been in meeting its obligation? What are the …

Preventing Salmon Escapes From Aquaculture In Canada And The Usa: Limited International Coordinates, Divergent Regulatory Currents And Possible Future Courses, David Vanderzwaag, Tricia Barry

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Following an introductory review of the continuing problem of salmon escaping from aquaculture operations along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America, and the considerable uncertainties over ecological impacts, this article examines the law and policy context for preventing escapes from three perspectives. First, the limited guidance for addressing aquaculture escapes under existing global and regional agreements/arrangements is highlighted. Second, how Canada and the USA have sought to control escape events at national and provincial/State levels is summarized. Third, possible future courses are identified, which improve the way salmon escapes are addressed, with stronger regional responses suggested as most …

Above The Law? The Constitutionality Of The Ministerial Exemption From Antidiscrimination Law, Caroline Mala Corbin Jan 2007

Above The Law? The Constitutionality Of The Ministerial Exemption From Antidiscrimination Law, Caroline Mala Corbin

Fordham Law Review

This Article critiques the constitutional underpinnings of the “ministerial exemption,” which grants religious organizations immunity from discrimination suits brought by “ministerial” employees. These employees, who range from parochial schoolteachers to church music directors, cannot assert Title VII race or sex discrimination claims against their religious employers--regardless of whether or not religious belief motivated the discrimination. Lower courts and commentators assert that the right of church autonomy created by the religion clauses requires this result, but the Supreme Court has never blessed (nor rejected) it. This Article argues there is no place for the ministerial exemption under the Supreme Court's current …

Operation "Drive Out The Trash": The Case For Imposing Targeted United Nations Sanctions Against Zimbabwean Officials, Katherine Hughes Jan 2007

Operation "Drive Out The Trash": The Case For Imposing Targeted United Nations Sanctions Against Zimbabwean Officials, Katherine Hughes

Fordham Law Review

In May 2005, representatives of President Robert Mugabe's government initiated a slum-clearance campaign entitled Operation Murambatsvina, which displaced nearly one million Zimbabweans. Using Operation Murambatsvina as a case study, this Note examines how the United Nations (U.N.) should respond to governments that violate the human rights of those living within their borders. Exploring arguments for and against the various responses available to the U.N., this Note argues that targeted sanctions are the most appropriate response to the abuses perpetrated by the Mugabe regime and offers suggestions for crafting a “smart” sanctions program.
