Connectivity, Classroom, And Contagion: An Ecological Analysis Of Testing Availability, Sex Education, And Sti Rates In The Upper Midwest, Macey M. Boerhave

Honors Thesis

Rural and frontier communities in the Upper Midwest face unique challenges that shape how young people access sexual health information and testing. While sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates continue to rise nationally, less is known about how sexual health education, digital access, and geographic distance influence these trends at a county level. This study examines the relationship between broadband internet access rates, poverty rates, proximity to free or low-cost STI testing sites, and county-level STI rates among individuals aged 15-24 in selected counties across South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska. Using an ecological, cross-sectional design, county-level STI surveillance …

Eisen, Eugene Storozynsky, René J. Alvarez, J. Eduardo Rame, Keshava Rajagopal, John W. Entwistle, Charles Hoopes, Vakhtang Tchantchaleishvili

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

PURPOSE: There is a lack of data reviewing the role of predicted cardiac mass ratio (PCMR) in transplant recipients with pulmonary hypertension (PH). In particular, the right ventricular (RV) mass ratio (RVMR) is a component of PCMR not yet studied separately for this purpose. We aimed to review the relationship of PCMR and RVMR with PH in terms of post-transplant overall survival.

METHODS: The United Network for Organ-Sharing (UNOS) database was queried for primary heart transplant (HTx) patients from 2004 to 2023. Predicted RVMR was calculated for donors and recipients. A parsimonious multivariable model Cox model was formed for risk …

Supporting Commuter Students In Uk Higher Education: Opportunities To Enhance Policy And Practice, Rebecca Turner, Rao Namrata, Christie Pritchard, Oliver Webb, Pinn E, Asal Baharloo, Harriet Ball

Professional Services

Commuter students represent a significant, yet often overlooked, demographic within English higher education (HE). Historically, national policy and institutional practice have failed to adequately acknowledge distinct challenges they face. Using a novel participatory mapping activity, and focus group discussions with 19 commuter students, this paper identifies how commuters are excluded by dominant models of university participation. We examine students’ interactions with campus, peers and staff. Findings reveal how structural norms—such as attendance expectations, financial support, and spatial assumptions—can marginalise learners who do not follow the residential model. Participants described feeling peripheral to university life, with their legitimacy as students sometimes …

Promoting Participation In Adults With Intellectual Disabilities (Id) Through Inclusive Theatre Education And A Professional Theatre Partnership, Lila R. Clark Apr 2026

Promoting Participation In Adults With Intellectual Disabilities (Id) Through Inclusive Theatre Education And A Professional Theatre Partnership, Lila R. Clark

Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium

Intellectual Disabilities (ID) are characterized by a deficit in intellectual and adaptive function that affects between 1% and 3% of the general population (Patel et al., 2020). As young people age out of the school system between 18 and 21 years of age, opportunities for meaningful participation in their community drop drastically (Codd & Hewitt, 2020). This lack of opportunity can lead to decreased overall mental health and quality of life, possibly explaining why adults with ID are disproportionately affected by mental illness when compared to their typically developing peers (Hall, 2017; Pinals et al., 2022). The purpose of this …

Addressing Financial Toxicity In Student-Run Free Clinics (Srfcs) Through Development Of Inventory System And Community Resource Guide For Durable Medical Equipment (Dme), Samantha Boggess Apr 2026

Addressing Financial Toxicity In Student-Run Free Clinics (Srfcs) Through Development Of Inventory System And Community Resource Guide For Durable Medical Equipment (Dme), Samantha Boggess

Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium

Student run free clinics (SRFC) provide care to uninsured or under insured patients with physical and mental health impairments. Under insured patients must make difficult decisions about their healthcare, not based on best practices, but on what they can reasonably afford.  For example, they may have to forego durable medical equipment (DME) (e.g., shower chairs, wheelchairs, and self-care equipment)or treatments due to high out-of-pocket costs.

Financial toxicity (FT) refers to the negative impact of medical expenses on patients’ health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and can lead to poor physical and mental health outcomes. FT is a new concept that has …

Improving Implementation And Effectiveness Of Self-Regulation Strategies In Clinical And Home-Based Settings, Carlie M. Foltz Apr 2026

Improving Implementation And Effectiveness Of Self-Regulation Strategies In Clinical And Home-Based Settings, Carlie M. Foltz

Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium

Self-regulation is defined as an individual’s ability to manage behavior, emotions, thoughts, and attention in order to achieve goal-directed actions (Chen et al., 2024). Occupational therapists support participation in meaningful occupations such as school, play, and self-care, where limited self-regulation skills may hinder engagement. Despite the well-documented importance of self-regulation, inconsistent implementation and assessment of self-regulation tools limit carryover and long-term effectiveness.

This doctoral capstone project, completed in collaboration with a local pediatric occupational therapy rehabilitation clinic, aimed to improve the implementation and carryover of self-regulation tools for children ages 4-13. As identified in a prior needs assessment, children reported …

Psychological Distress, Hazardous Duty, And Alcohol Risk Among Student Veterans, Anna Lupardo, Emily Rabinowitz, Victoria E. Carlin, Dezarie Moskal, Stephen A. Maisto, Joseph W. Ditre

Voices of Service Symposium

Introduction: Military service and college environments are each associated with higher alcohol risk. Psychological distress is consistently linked to alcohol risk, and hazardous duty exposure is associated with both greater distress and problematic alcohol use. However, it remains unclear whether hazardous duty influences the relationship between psychological distress and alcohol risk among student service members. Clarifying this relationship is critical to informing targeted prevention and support efforts for veterans in higher education. Method: Participants included 3,258 current and former service members who responded to the American College Health Association 2023-2025 National College Health Assessment IIIb. Participants completed measures on alcohol …

Supporting Positive Interactions With Individuals With Disabilities: A Law Enforcement Guide, Brittany James Jefferson, Mary Jan Greer

Spring 2026 OTD Capstone Symposium

This capstone project developed an educational guide to support law enforcement officers in creating safe and effective interactions with individuals with disabilities. A needs assessment informed the guide’s development, which was grounded in occupational therapy principles and the Person Environment Occupation Performance (PEOP) model. The guide was implemented within a law enforcement setting and evaluated through officer feedback. Findings indicated strong baseline experience among officers, with added value in providing structured strategies to support communication, interpretation, and de-escalation. This project highlights the role of occupational therapy in promoting inclusive, community-based practice.

Where Do Policy Demanders Come From? Protestants And Party Formation In The Antebellum Period, John W. Compton Apr 2026

Where Do Policy Demanders Come From? Protestants And Party Formation In The Antebellum Period, John W. Compton

Political Science Faculty Articles and Research

The early 1830s were years of intense religious fervor, when well-organized moral reform movements seemed destined to remake the political landscape. Curiously, however, the party system that emerged from this period was premised on the exclusion of moral issues from party politics. How did the early Jacksonian Democrats and Whigs manage to construct an essentially amoral party system during a decade marked by large-scale moral reform movements? And why did the resulting system unravel in the mid-1850s? Answering these questions requires shifting the focus from party activists and elected officials to organized religion. Specifically, I show that the nation's largest …

Translating Self-Regulation Concepts Into Practice: A Pediatric Outpatient Occupational Therapy Activity Toolkit, Catherine Spaulding Apr 2026

Translating Self-Regulation Concepts Into Practice: A Pediatric Outpatient Occupational Therapy Activity Toolkit, Catherine Spaulding

Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium

Translating Self-Regulation Concepts into Practice: A Pediatric Outpatient Occupational Therapy Activity Toolkit

Self-regulation is a foundational skill that enables individuals to manage emotions, behaviors, attention, and physiological responses to engage meaningfully in daily life. In childhood, the development of self-regulation predicts academic success, social relationships, mental health, and lifelong wellbeing (Philpott-Robinson et al., 2023; Robson et al., 2020). When children experience self-regulation difficulties, early identification and intervention by pediatric occupational therapists (OTs) can help prevent future mental health and wellbeing challenges (Philpott-Robinson et al., 2023). Pediatric OTs support self-regulation through sensory-based strategies, mindfulness practices, environmental modifications, caregiver education, and collaboration …

A Data Model For Coordinated Care, Zachary Bridgewater, Maggie Southwick, Billie Jo Lenning, Mary Rachel Keville, Gilly Cantor Apr 2026

A Data Model For Coordinated Care, Zachary Bridgewater, Maggie Southwick, Billie Jo Lenning, Mary Rachel Keville, Gilly Cantor

Voices of Service Symposium

Coordinated care is a service delivery paradigm that connects health and human service organizations via a shared referral platform managed by care navigators (i.e., coordinators). Referral technologies have proliferated to support this work, but the absence of data collection standards has produced a technology environment where platforms compete on not only their designs and features but on their underlying data models too. Understandably, these distinct data models arise from varying funder and customer pressures. The result, however, is a fragmented data landscape where users and creators of different platforms have different views of the issues faced by communities.

Ethics And Interventions In Substance Abuse Treatment For Military Service Members, Ken Marfilius, Allyson Donovan Apr 2026

Ethics And Interventions In Substance Abuse Treatment For Military Service Members, Ken Marfilius, Allyson Donovan

Voices of Service Symposium

Substance use disorders (SUDs) among military service members and veterans remain critically underdiagnosed. Ethical barriers such as stigma and fear of career repercussions contribute heavily to this gap in treatment-seeking behavior. Culturally informed, evidence-based interventions, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing, are essential to addressing SUDs within this population in an ethically grounded manner.

Hazardous Alcohol Use And Chronic Pain Co-Occurrence And Comorbidity Rates: A National Study Of Veterans Affairs Primary Care Patients, Dezarie Moskal, Jacob L. Scharer, Jennifer S. Funderburk, Joseph W. Ditre, Gregory P. Beehler

Voices of Service Symposium

Hazardous alcohol use (HAU) and chronic pain are each common among U.S. veterans and are associated with poorer health outcomes when they co-occur. Primary care plays a central role in the identification and management of both conditions. However, national estimates of their co-occurrence and related comorbidity burden are limited. Accordingly, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of HAU and chronic pain and compared comorbidity patterns in a national Veterans Affairs (VA) primary care sample.

This national retrospective VA electronic health record study included 3,900,633 veterans aged 18+ seen in primary care between July 2022 and December 2023. HAU was …

Play For All: Promoting Inclusivity And Providing Modifications For Kids With Disabilities Within An Indoor Play Space, Yasmeen Ikbal, Mary Jan Greer Apr 2026

Play For All: Promoting Inclusivity And Providing Modifications For Kids With Disabilities Within An Indoor Play Space, Yasmeen Ikbal, Mary Jan Greer

Spring 2026 OTD Capstone Symposium

Children’s environments need to be enhanced to match their developmental levels (Winter & Dempsey, 1994). There is a lack of tools, play equipment, and structures specifically targeted to children with disabilities (Therrien et al., 2022). Lack of opportunities for these children can hinder their development (Mullick, 2013). This capstone intends to educate staff and parents on how to promote inclusivity by increasing their understanding of disabilities, creating accessible environments, adapting activities, and building confidence in supporting children with disabilities to participate in their occupations.

Cerebellar Oligodendrocytic Α-Synuclein Pathology And Dentate Nucleus Neuronal Hypertrophy In Parkinson’S Disease, Diego Iacono, Hui Peng, John Paul Bouffard, Roger Kurlan

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (iPD) research has historically prioritized basal ganglia dysfunction and neuronal Lewy body pathology, often overlooking cerebellar and non-neuronal cells contributions. This study investigates cerebellar neuropathology in iPD, specifically focusing on neuronal and non-neuronal cells of the dentate nucleus (DN) and its adjacent white matter (DN-WM). We systematically assessed autopsy-confirmed iPD brains vs. age-matched controls using immunohistochemistry and stereology-based morphometry methods. The study evaluated α-synuclein pathology, other common age-related co-occurring pathologies (β-amyloid, Tau, neuroinflammation), myelin integrity (Luxol-Fast-Blue), and neuronal volumetric changes in the DN of the cerebellum. In iPD brains, we identified intracytoplasmic α-synuclein inclusions within oligodendrocytes across …
