In Search Of Certain Earnings: Applying The Ace Portfolio Concept To Sectors, James L. Grant, Chris Rowberry Jan 2007

In Search Of Certain Earnings: Applying The Ace Portfolio Concept To Sectors, James L. Grant, Chris Rowberry

Financial Services Forum Publications

Sector composites that have highly stable earnings streams allow the portfolio manager or analyst to derive “earnings certain” sector risk premiums. ACE (Approximately Certain Earnings) Sectors represent such baskets. Since sector pricing is influenced by earnings variability, obtaining risk premiums from standard sectors is contaminated. With knowledge of an EPS Stability measure, a composite engine, and the proprietary G-Model (or like DCF framework), we can discover companies within each sector that exhibit highly certain earnings. In practice, ACE Sectors can be used to derive current/historical “earnings certain” sector risk premiums, enhance sector rotation strategies, obtain sector implied growth rates, make …

Parents As Navigators: How Caregivers Of Children With Mental Health Difficulties Find Supports In The Workplace, Katherine J. Huffstutter, Jennifer R. Bradley, Eileen M. Brennan, Marlene Penn, Julie M. Rosenzweig

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

For some parents, the gap between the demands of work and family and the resources they have available to meet these responsibilities is too great, particularly for employed parents of children with emotional or behavioral disorders (Brennan & Brannan, 2005). While responding to the increasing demands of the workplace for dedicated performance and significant facetime, parents must also arrange for their children's treatment, see that their educational needs are met, and provide enrichment opportunities in the community (Huang et al., 2005). Despite challenges, these parents have used creative approaches to "cobble together" flexible arrangements that work for both their families …

Access To Child Care For Children With Emotional Or Behavioral Challenges: An Essential Element Of Family Support, Eileen M. Brennan, Julie M. Rosenzweig, Anna M. Malsch, Katherine J. Huffstutter, Lisa Maureen Stewart, John Conley

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Parents don't always feel they can disclose the special needs of their children to other families or even caregivers unless it is obvious they have had the training and skills to handle the situation. They also may not disclose their children's special needs to their employer, unless difficulties arranging and keeping child care make disclosure necessary. Major policy issue but unknown to public because many families do not disclose. Reality is that 1 in 5 families have a child with special needs. Research implications---parents develop strategies to keep their jobs and keep child care. Parents often have to choose between …

A 300-Year Geochronological Assessment Of Atmospheric Mercury Depostition In California, Rhea D. Sanders Jan 2007

A 300-Year Geochronological Assessment Of Atmospheric Mercury Depostition In California, Rhea D. Sanders

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Aquatic mercury (Hg) contamination and subsequent bioaccumulation pose a threat to human and ecosystem health. The mitigation of contaminated water bodies requires an understanding of natural baselines of metal concentrations and fluxes. In this study, six age-dated sediment cores were analyzed to assess temporal and spatial variability of atmospheric Hg deposition from remote natural lakes throughout California. Geochemical proxies, including 210Pb, particle size, magnetic susceptibility, organic carbon and organic nitrogen, were measured to apportion Hg concentrations between atmospheric deposition, anthropogenic and watershed processes. Anthropogenic Total Hg (HgT) lake sediment concentrations increased by factors of 2 to 10 times that of …

Promoting Parental Involvement Among Latino Parents At Glen View Elementary School, Maricela Ortiz

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This project was designed to increase Latino parents' knowledge regarding how to get more involved in their children's education. Research has shown that children do better in school when their parents participate in their education. Therefore, the ultimately purpose of this project was to maximize children's full learning potential through coordinating a field trip to the library and giving to presentations, one on healthy habits at home and the other on homework strategies. When this project was completed, the participants indicated that their knowledge increased and that they felt more motivated to get more involved in their children's education.

Safety Sitter Class, Rachael Pino Jan 2007

Safety Sitter Class, Rachael Pino

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

According to statistical information, 40.8% of children living below poverty level and 35% of children living above poverty level must spend part of their day without adult supervision (Johnson, 2002). These children are vulnerable to physical injury, fear, and loneliness, and they must face emergencies alone. However, many agencies provide safety information and coping strategies for children in these situations. One such agency, The Lyceum of Monterey County, has collaborated with a local fire chief to provide a "safety sitter" class. After two decades of offering this class, the Lyceum has recognized the popularity of this class and has identified …

The Integration Of Graphic Communication And Educational Tools For Children With Dyslexia, Amar Abdulla Behbehani

Theses

Design for education is an important approach in the graphic design field. The intention of this thesis is to conduct further research that can help educators and designers build healthier learning environments for children with learning disabilities. Learning environments are not limited to physical environments such as classroom designs or school architecture; they are extended to cognitive environments that are greatly affected by external influences such as sensory stimulation and learning methods. Children with special educational needs could benefit from effective design solutions for better information processing. This designer attempts to develop typographic solutions to facilitate the reading process of …

Fda Jurisdiction: A Matter Of Definitions, Lewis Grossman Jan 2007

Fda Jurisdiction: A Matter Of Definitions, Lewis Grossman

Contributions to Books

This chapter, new in the third edition, concerns how Congress, the Food and Drug Administration, and the courts have treated the definitions of "food," "drug," "cosmetic," "device," and "human biological product." The scope of FDA's power is delineated almost entirely by the list of product categories over which it has jurisdiction. As the materials in this chapter show, the product definitions are strikingly broad and thus confer jurisdiction over a vast range of goods. Furthermore, the definitions are remarkably plastic, providing FDA with great flexibility to decide whether and how to regulate products. Sometimes FDA has interpreted the definitions expansively, …

Crisis, Charisma And Consequences: Evidence From The 2004 Us Presidential Election, Jennifer L. Merolla, Jennifer M. Ramos, Elizabeth J. Zechmeister Jan 2007

Crisis, Charisma And Consequences: Evidence From The 2004 Us Presidential Election, Jennifer L. Merolla, Jennifer M. Ramos, Elizabeth J. Zechmeister

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

We investigate how conditions of crisis affect perceptions of charisma and how these, in turn, affect blame attribution and self-sacrificial behavior. Our data are from a 2004 experimental study that preceded the U.S. presidential election, in which we manipulated concerns of a terrorist attack. The results show that those in the Crisis condition rated Bush higher on perceptions of charisma compared to those in the Good Times condition. The Crisis condition also directly and indirectly, via perceptions of charisma, affected whether Bush was blamed for failures in Iraq and our subjects’ willingness to sacrifice their personal resources for his candidacy.

Partying Before The Party: Examining Prepartying Behavior Among College Students, Eric R. Pedersen, Joseph W. Labrie Jan 2007

Partying Before The Party: Examining Prepartying Behavior Among College Students, Eric R. Pedersen, Joseph W. Labrie

Heads Up!

Objective:

The authors examined the phenomenon known to college students as prepartying, which is the consumption of alcohol prior to attending an event or activity (eg, party, bar, concert) at which more alcohol may be consumed.

Participants:

To explore the extent of this behavior, the authors surveyed 227 college students about each drinking event over a 1-month period.

Results:

Principal results revealed that 64% of participants engaged in prepartying (75% of drinkers) and that prepartying is involved in approximately 45% of all drinking events. Prepartying was predictive of more drinking throughout the day of the drinking event and alcohol-related …

Female College Drinking And The Social Learning Theory: An Examination Of The Developmental Transition Period From High School To College, Joseph W. Labrie, Karie Huchting, Eric R. Pedersen, Justin F. Hummer, Kristin Shelesky, Summer Tawalbeh

Heads Up!

Problematic drinking among college students remains a national issue with large percentages of college students reporting heavy episodic or binge drinking (Wechsler, Dowdall, Davenport, & Castillo, 1995) and experiencing severe alcohol-related consequences ranging from poor academic performance, to sexual assault, vandalism, and even death (Hingson, Heeren, Winter, & Wechsler, 2005; Wechsler et al., 2002). According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA, 2002), the first 6 weeks on a college campus are critical to first-year student success. However, during these first weeks many students initiate heavy drinking that may interfere …

Evaluation Of A Putative Entomopathogenic Caenorhabditis (Nematoda: Rhabditid) And Associated Serratia (Proteobacteria: Enterobacteriaceae), Kaitlin M. Bonner

Master's Theses and Capstones

A major goal of modern biology is to extend our understanding of biological systems investigated in the laboratory to their ecological and evolutionary context. With extensive understanding of the function, development and genetics of C. elegans, exploring the link between this laboratory model and the environment in which this system evolved would be very interesting because very little is known about the natural history of this premier model organism.

A new strain of Caenorhabditis briggsae (SoAf) with an associated bacterium, Serratia sp. SCBI, has been isolated from South Africa using common entomopathogenic nematode trapping methods. This study taxonomically identified and …

Dissociation Of Eif1 From The 40s Ribosomal Subunit Is A Key Step In Start Codon Selection In Vivo, Sarah F. Mitchell Jan 2007

Dissociation Of Eif1 From The 40s Ribosomal Subunit Is A Key Step In Start Codon Selection In Vivo, Sarah F. Mitchell

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works

Selection of the AUG start codon is a key step in translation initiation requiring hydrolysis of GTP in the eIF2·GTP·Met-tRNA iMet ternary complex (TC) and subsequent Pi release from eIF2·GDP·Pi. It is thought that eIF1 prevents recognition of non-AUGs by promoting scanning and blocking P i release at non-AUG codons. We show that Sui? mutations in Saccharomyces cerevisiae eIF1, which increase initiation at UUG codons, reduce interaction of eIF1 with 40S subunits in vitro and in vivo, and both defects are diminished in cells by overexpressing the mutant proteins. Remarkably, Sui? mutation ISQLG93-97ASQAA (abbreviated 93-97) accelerates eIF1 dissociation and Pi …

A Group Motivational Interviewing Intervention Reduces Drinking And Alcohol-Related Negative Consequences In Adjudicated College Women, Joseph W. Labrie, Alysha D. Thompson, Karen Huchting, Andrew Lac, Kevin Buckley

Heads Up!

College students who violate campus alcohol policies (adjudicated students) are at high risk for experiencing negative alcohol-related consequences and for undermining campus life. Further, college women may be especially at risk due to differential intoxication effects and sexual consequences experienced mainly by female students. Research on interventions for adjudicated students, especially adjudicated females, has been limited. One hundred and fifteen college women who received a sanction for violating campus alcohol policies participated in the study. The two hour group intervention focused on female-specific reasons for drinking and included decisional balance, goal setting and other exercises. Participants completed follow-up surveys for …
