Religion And The Electability Of Presidential Candidates, Dr. Philip E. Lampe Ph.D.

Denominationalism appears to be an important factor in American politics, particularly in presidential elections. Evidence indicates there are, and has always been, favored and disfavored denominations. One such disfavored denomination is Catholicism. Although it is the largest denomination in the United States, there has been only one Catholic president. Until the 2004 election, whenever a Catholic was in the presidential race, anti-Catholic rhetoric was commonly employed against him. Fears of papal control and sinister machinations were expressed. Financial Behavior And Quality Of Life Of College Students: Implications For College Financial Education, Jing Jian Xiao, Soyeon Shim, Bonnie Barber, Angela C. Lyons

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

This paper reports preliminary findings from a study on financial behaviors of college students. Objectives of the study are to identify factors associated with financial behaviors and to examine associations between financial behavior and quality of life of the students surveyed. Results of bivariate analyses show that frequencies of performing positive financial behaviors are associated with many factors, such as attitude toward performing the behavior, perceived control, parental influence, peer influence, class standing, etc. In addition, performing desirable financial behaviors is positively associated with financial satisfaction, physical health, mental health, academic performance and satisfaction, and life satisfaction.

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

PlanPDX worked to assess existing district conditions and assist in the development of goals for the district that could inform and guide future improvement efforts. Utilizing a variety of research methods including community outreach efforts, in-person interviews, technical analysis and organizing two well-attended community workshops, the Vision Team and PlanPDX successfully generated a set of recommendations for Main Street Park Rose. This project was conducted under the supervision of Ethan Seltzer and Sumner Sharpe.

In early 2007, the City of Aurora Planning Commission sought the assistance of JDL Planning, a consultant team consisting of five members in the Masters ofUrban and Regional Planning program at Portland State University, to update the City's 1995 Vision. JDL Planning guided an intensive visioning process to capture the current values of both new and long-time residents and businessowners. This project was conducted under the supervision of Ethan Seltzer and Sumner Sharpe.

This team provided Metro with an assessment of conditions along the power line corridor on the proposed Westside Trail. The team developed trail goals and objectives, as well as criteria by which to assess the study area. The final product highlights opportunities and constraints for meeting the trail's goals and objectives, and a set of recommendations for the trail. This project was conducted under the supervision of Ethan Seltzer and Sumner Sharpe.

Factors Associated With Employment Among Latinos Living With Hiv/Aids, Shaun Michael Burns, Lydia R. L. Young, Suzanne Maniss

This investigation explored the utility of various demographic, health-related, and psychological variables in predicting employment among Latinos living with HIV/AIDS. Results of an analysis of variance indicated that employed participants were younger, evinced significantly greater CD4 counts, physical and mental health functioning, and internal locus of control beliefs than those who were unable to work due to disabilities. A backward binary logistic regression demonstrated that age, CD4 count, internal locus of control, and mental health functioning contributed to the explanatory power of the final model.
