Comparison Of Efficiency Of An Advanced Oxidation Process For Degrading Major Classes Of Dyes, Fatima Hasan Abdullah Ai-Hamedi
Comparison Of Efficiency Of An Advanced Oxidation Process For Degrading Major Classes Of Dyes, Fatima Hasan Abdullah Ai-Hamedi
Theses
Synthetic dyes are a major part of our life. Products ranging from clothes to leather
Accessories to furniture all depend on extensive use of organic dyes.
There are numerous classes of these dyes. However, azo, anthraquinonoid,
Triarylmethane, diarylmethane, acridine, quinine, xanthane and nitro represent the major
Classes and are most commonly used dyes.
An unfortunate side effect of their widespread use is the fact that up to 12% of these dyes are
Wasted during the dyeing process, and that approximately 20% of this waste enters the environment (mostly in water supply). The effluents from these industries cause the water bodies …
Mothers Of Soldiers In Wartime: A National News Narrative, Karen L. Slattery, Ana C. Garner
Mothers Of Soldiers In Wartime: A National News Narrative, Karen L. Slattery, Ana C. Garner
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
National news media represent mothers of US combat soldiers in the Iraq War as archetypal good mothers, that is, mothers who continue their maternal work even after their children are deployed. However, not all mothers are depicted as the archetypal patriotic mother, i.e., a good mother who is also stoic and silent about the war and her child's role in it. Mothers of soldiers are portrayed as good mothers who sometimes also voice their attitudes about the war effort. The maternal attitudes ranged from complete support for the war to opposition to the war but support for the soldiers. The …

This shift from defending and reacting to creating and envisioning requires a more engaged organizational role for the lawyer. The lawyer is now expected to do more than translate the organization/community's grievance into discreet legal frameworks and discourse---e.g., a civil rights violation, a nuisance, participatory right, etc. The lawyer now intervenes in negotiations from which the organization or community has been excluded. This new role requires a shifting, flexible mix of skills and a more dynamic interaction with the organization and its varied functions-policy, community education, lobbying, and organizing. This new role is what we call "integrative lawyering," an emergent …

Altered Parvalbumin-Positive Neuron Distribution In Basal Ganglia Of Individuals With Tourette Syndrome, Paul S.A. Kalanithi
Altered Parvalbumin-Positive Neuron Distribution In Basal Ganglia Of Individuals With Tourette Syndrome, Paul S.A. Kalanithi
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The neuropathology of Tourette Syndrome (TS) is poorly characterized. This thesis provides the first quantitative stereologic immunohistochemical study of the basal ganglia in TS. TS is a childhood neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. Previous imaging studies found alterations in caudate (Cd) and putamen (Pt) volumes. To investigate possible alterations in cell populations, postmortem basal ganglia tissue from individuals with TS and normal controls (NC) was analyzed using unbiased stereological techniques. A markedly higher (>160% of control) total neuron number and density was found in the internal segment of the globus pallidus (GPi) of TS (p220% of …
A Comparison Of Cyclic Valgus Loading On Reconstructed Ulnar Collateral Ligament Of The Elbow, Roshan Pradip Shah
A Comparison Of Cyclic Valgus Loading On Reconstructed Ulnar Collateral Ligament Of The Elbow, Roshan Pradip Shah
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
This study compares the biomechanics of early cyclic valgus loading of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the elbow repaired by either the Jobe technique or the docking technique. Better understanding of the biomechanical properties of each reconstruction may help surgeons choose the optimal surgical technique, particularly in planning earlier rehabilitation programs. Sixteen fresh frozen cadaver limbs (eight pairs) were randomized to either the Jobe cohort or the docking cohort. First intact UCLs were tested, followed by the repaired constructions. A Bionix MTS apparatus applied a constant valgus load to the elbows at 70o flexion, and valgus displacement was measured …

Social Support And Reproductive Health In 15 To 24 Year Old Immigrant Latinas In The San Francisco Bay Area, Ahou Meydani
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
This study examines how social support is related to reproductive health risk among 15-24 year old immigrant Latinas residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a cross-sectional, clinic-based study, composed of a sample of 68 immigrant Latina women, aged 15-24 (mean 18.7, S.D. 2.2), recruited from waiting rooms at two clinics in Oakland. Participants completed an interviewer-administered questionnaire and provided blood and self-obtained vaginal swab specimens to test for sexually transmitted infections. Three dimensions of social support were assessed: 1) functional support, using the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) Social Support Survey; 2) structural support (quantity of support sources); …
A National Study Of Job Satisfaction Factors Among Faculty In Physician Assistant Education, Wallace D. Boeve
A National Study Of Job Satisfaction Factors Among Faculty In Physician Assistant Education, Wallace D. Boeve
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the job satisfaction factors for physician assistant (PA) faculty. Job satisfaction factors were divided into two categories: intrinsic factors about the respondents (work itself and opportunities for advancement) and extrinsic factors about the institutional faculty support (salary, supervisory support, and coworker relations). The theoretical approach used in this study to examine job satisfaction among PA faculty was Herzberg’s (1966) two-factor theory of motivation. Additionally to enhance Herzberg’s theory regarding intrinsic and extrinsic factors, Smith, Kendall, and Hulin’s (1969) facet-specific job satisfaction theory (i.e., Job Description Index (JDI)) was utilized. A Web-based survey …

Psychological Correlates Of Exercise Behavior Among Adolescents, Kevin C. Paul
Psychological Correlates Of Exercise Behavior Among Adolescents, Kevin C. Paul
LSU Master's Theses
According to the 2003 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey, 33% of youth in grades 9-12 participated in an insufficient amount of vigorous and moderate physical activity (PA), and 11% reported no vigorous and moderate PA. Although researchers have examined the psychological correlates of exercise behavior among youth, limited research investigating moderators of the theories of reasoned action (TRA; Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) and planned behavior (TPB; Ajzen, 1985) in this population exists. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to examine socioeconomic status (SES) as a moderator of the psychological correlates of exercise intention and behavior using the TRA/TPB …
Transcriptional And Post-Transcriptional Regulation Of Gadd45Α In Response To Arsenic., Deepak Bhatia
Transcriptional And Post-Transcriptional Regulation Of Gadd45Α In Response To Arsenic., Deepak Bhatia
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previously, publications from our lab had demonstrated that arsenic can regulate Gadd45α through p53-dependent and -independent manner where we explored the regulation of Gadd45α by various transcription factors, including Foxo3a, NF-κB and through stress signaling pathways such as JNK. Here we analyzed whether arsenic has any impact on the biosynthesis of Egr-1, since Egr-1 has also been reported to regulate Gadd45α in keratinocytes in response to UVB. Our results show arsenic can induce Egr-1 synthesis in a dose- and time-dependent manner. To determine the regulatory sequence responsible for Egr-1 induction, we created deletion constructs in the Egr-1 promoter and found …

It Takes Time: Impacts Of Early Head Start That Lead To Reductions In Maternal Depression Two Years Later, Rachel Chazan-Cohen, Catherine Ayoub, Barbara Alexander Pan, Lori Roggman, Helen Raikes, Lorraine Mckelvey, Leanne Whiteside-Mansell, Andrea Hart
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
The Early Head Start Research and Evaluation Project, a random-assignment evaluation, found a broad pattern of positive impacts for children and families. However, there were no program impacts on depression or use of mental health services by the time children reached age 3, at the end of the Early Head Start (EHS) program. This paper presents recent findings from the follow-up study in the spring prior to the children entering kindergarten, when a positive program impact emerged for reducing maternal depression. Results show that earlier program impacts on children and parents (when children were 2 and 3 years of age) …
Culture-Related Strengths Among Latin American Families: A Case Study Of Brazil, Gustavo Carlo, Silvia Koller, Marcela Raffaelli, Maria Rosario De Guzman
Culture-Related Strengths Among Latin American Families: A Case Study Of Brazil, Gustavo Carlo, Silvia Koller, Marcela Raffaelli, Maria Rosario De Guzman
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
We provide an analysis of culturally-specific strength characteristics associated with families in Brazil. The focus is on familism and familial interdependence, the role of the extended family, cooperative and prosocial tendencies, a collective orientation, and the closing gender gap. The article is divided into four sections. First, we provide some background information on the demographics and history of Brazil. Second, the family strength characteristics are discussed. Third, case studies are briefly presented to illustrate the protective role of the characteristics. And fourth, we discuss the implications of the strengths-based approach to studying families for theories, research, and program development.
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Respirator Half-Facepiece Fit And Facial Anthropometry Using Three-Dimensional Laser Scanning Technology., Dennis W. Groce
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Respirator Half-Facepiece Fit And Facial Anthropometry Using Three-Dimensional Laser Scanning Technology., Dennis W. Groce
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study investigated the relationship between industrial respirator half-facepiece fit and facial anthropometry, including three-dimensional parameters. The investigation included application of laser scanning technology to the measurement of faces. The goal was to identify facially-related variables that are worthy of further investigation. The relationships between facial features and respirator dimensions are of significance to the industrial respirator community (manufacturers, testers, and users) because the faceseal leakage affects the level of protection provided by the respirators to workers; factors that predict facepiece fit are therefore of interest for the design of respirators, the testing of respirators, and the selection of respirators …
Toward A Human Rights Framework For Intellectual Property, Laurence R. Helfer
Toward A Human Rights Framework For Intellectual Property, Laurence R. Helfer
Faculty Scholarship
This Article, prepared for a Symposium on Intellectual Property and Social Justice held at the University of California at Davis School of Law in March 2006, addresses the growing intersection of human rights law and intellectual property law. Its principal point of departure is a November 2005 General Comment on "the right of everyone to benefit from the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author" - a relatively obscure provision of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The Article builds upon the analysis …
Applying The Access Principle In Law: The Responsibilities Of The Legal Scholar, Richard A. Danner
Applying The Access Principle In Law: The Responsibilities Of The Legal Scholar, Richard A. Danner
Faculty Scholarship
This article applies to legal scholarship the ideas developed and argued in John Willinsky’s 2006 book: 'The Access Principle: The Case for Open Access to Research and Scholarship' regarding the responsibilities of scholars to make their works widely available through open access mechanisms via the Internet. Willinsky’s access principle states that “A commitment to the value and quality of research carries with it a responsibility to extend the circulation of such work as far as possible and ideally to all who are in interested in it and all who might profit by it.” For Willinsky, the transformation of scholarly journals …
