Foraging Preferences Of Captive Canada Geese Related To Turfgrass Mixtures, Brian E. Washburn, Scott C. Barras, Thomas W. Seamans Jan 2007

Foraging Preferences Of Captive Canada Geese Related To Turfgrass Mixtures, Brian E. Washburn, Scott C. Barras, Thomas W. Seamans

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Overabundant populations of Canada geese (Branta canadensis) cause economic and safety concerns associated with collisions with civil and military aircraft. Habitat management techniques that reduce the use of airfield habitats by geese might reduce these concerns. The objective of this study was to determine if captive Canada geese exhibited a foraging preference between a vegetation mixture consisting mostly of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and white clover (Trifolium repens) versus an endophyte-infected tall fescue- (Festuca arundinacea) based vegetation mixture. We established 6 paired plots of perennial ryegrass-dominated and tall fescue-dominated mixtures at NASA …

Changing Perspectives On The Use Of Antimicrobial Mouthrinses, Michele Leonardi Darby

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications

As oral health care professionals, we need to make evidence-based recommendations to our patients. Studies from which we derive our recommendations need to have been conducted with scientific rigor and need to be confirmed with other welldesigned studies. Given the numerous, long-term, peer-reviewed published studies on antimicrobial mouthrinses with consistent statistically and clinically significant outcomes, it is time to change our professional thinking and practices.

Hemicrania Continua-Like Headache Associated With Carotid Dissection May Respond To Indomethacin, Avi Ashkenazi, Muhammad A. Abbas, Dinesh K. Sharma, Stephen D. Silberstein

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Hemicrania continua (HC) is an idiopathic, chronic disorder characterized by a continuous, strictly unilateral headache associated with ipsilateral cranial autonomic symptoms. The symptoms of HC typically respond dramatically to indomethacin therapy. We describe a patient with traumatic internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection, who presented with a clinical picture mimicking HC that initially responded to indomethacin. Patients with a clinical picture similar to HC should be managed with a high index of suspicion for a possible cervical arterial dissection.

The International Legal Environment For Serious Political Reporting Has Fundamentally Changed: Understanding The Revolutionary New Era Of English Defamation Law, Marin Roger Scordato

Scholarly Articles

On October 11, 2006, Britain's highest court, the House of Lords, issued a blockbuster ruling that completely changed the landscape of libel law and press freedoms in the United Kingdom. The Times of London described the case, Jameel v. Wall Street Journal, as, "a judgment that lawyers predict will usher in a new era of journalism." Given England's reputation as an attractive jurisdiction for defamation plaintiffs and a frequent destination for "libel tourism," this case is likely to alter the environment for serious political journalism throughout Europe and North America.

This article carefully describes the case, including its key holdings …

Public Interest Drift Revised: Tracing The Sources Of Social Change Commitment Among Black Harvard Law Students, Jenee Desmond-Harris

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

Although "public interest drift"-the phenomenon of law students' interest in public interest careers decreasing over the course of legal education-has been studied extensively, author Jene Desmond- Harris argues that rates among black law students deserve a specially tailored analysis because of the black community's longstanding faith in the law and lawyers as instruments of social change. Through a study of current black Harvard Law students, admitted students, and alumni, she investigates the interactions between the Harvard Law School experience and the development of black law students' attitudes about pursuing careers aimed at affecting social change. Incorporating her own research with …

University of San Francisco Law Review

Harrah's, which the author argues insulates most employers from all but the most determined (and well-financed) challenges to sex-based dress, grooming, and appearance codes under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and will also likely impact both federal court and state court jurisprudence in this area of employment law.

Unpacking Pandora's Box: Innovative Techniques For Effectively Counseling Asylum Applicants Suffering From Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Carol M. Suzuki Jan 2007

Unpacking Pandora's Box: Innovative Techniques For Effectively Counseling Asylum Applicants Suffering From Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Carol M. Suzuki

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

Each year, innumerable asylum seekers are denied relief in the United States because the asylum officer or immigration judge does not believe that the applicant is telling the truth. The immigration judge makes an adverse credibility determination because the applicant's story of persecution lacks sufficient detail and is inconsistent. A victim of severe and often prolonged trauma may develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which profoundly affects his ability to tell a consistent and detailed story of past persecution. Thus, an asylum seeker suffering from PTSD as a result of traumatic experiences, desperately in need of a safe haven, may be …

The Nondischargeability Of Student Loans In Bankruptcy: How The Prevailing "Undue Hardship" Test Creates Hardship Of Its Own, Feather Devi Baron

University of San Francisco Law Review

This Comment argues that to ensure that every debtor receives equitable treatment with respect to the hardship exception, and to better follow congressional intent, the prevailing undue hardship test in bankruptcy cases for dischargeable debts should be amended to include a timing standard that requires courts to uniformly apply such a standard at the time a debtor files a dischargeability action. Furthermore, courts should maintain jurisdiction over hardship determinations until discharge occurs to prevent discharge of debts payable without undue hardship.

"Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves!" Why The Parental Rights Of Registered Domestic Partners Must Trump The Parental Rights Of Their Known Sperm Donors In California, Allison J. Stone

University of San Francisco Law Review

This Comment argues that California Family Code section 297.5 dictates that parental rights in both domestic partners who conceive a child through artificial insemination trump the parental rights of the known sperm donor, because heterosexual married couples have parental rights when a child is born during their marriage, even if one parent is not biologically related to the child.
