Structural Equation Modeling Of Alcohol Issues In An Emergency Department Sample, Karen E. Stamm Jan 2007

Structural Equation Modeling Of Alcohol Issues In An Emergency Department Sample, Karen E. Stamm

Open Access Master's Theses

Alcohol research often focuses on alcohol use variables. The following project is a development of a structural equation model (SEM) to test the relationships between risk taking, injuries, alcohol expectancies, alcohol consequences, and alcohol use. The model is based on principles from expectancy theory, social learning theory, the theory of reasoned action, and the transtheoretical model. The final mediational model represented a reasonable fit to the data, χ2 (70, N = 200) = 161.40, p < 0.001, CFI = 0.91, and RMSEA = 0.09 Risk taking, injuries, and alcohol expectancies were placed as independent factors, alcohol consequences was placed as a mediator factor, and alcohol use was placed as a dependent factor. With the exception of the path from injuries to alcohol consequences, all paths were significant. The results were consistent with existing models of alcohol expectancies, alcohol consequences, and alcohol use. Additionally, there is evidence that risk taking is important in the prediction of alcohol outcomes.

Multi-Dimensional Relating: A Re-Conceptualization Of Emotional Dependency In Female Couples, A. Cassandra Golding Jan 2007

Multi-Dimensional Relating: A Re-Conceptualization Of Emotional Dependency In Female Couples, A. Cassandra Golding

Open Access Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to reconceptualize emotional closeness in women's relationships through the introduction of a model of healthy emotional reliance (HER). This study intended to develop and validate a psychometrically sound measure of female healthy emotional reliance that will provide a means by which to measure a re-conceptualization of the healthy portions of merger in female couples. The original focus of merger, based on psychoanalytic theory, has been pathological. More recently it has been to some extent re-conceptualized as a healthy and functional emotional closeness. The combination of functional and dysfunctional components of merger has led to …

Improvement Of Current Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Systems Utilizing Practices From Outside Industries, Cyrus D. Agarabi Jan 2007

Improvement Of Current Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Systems Utilizing Practices From Outside Industries, Cyrus D. Agarabi

Open Access Master's Theses

Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP' s) were developed to keep the public safe and ensure quality products. Technological evolution of the industry resulted in cGMP requirements which could not keep pace, and ultimately had a restrictive effect on daily operations and process improvements for pharmaceutical manufacturers. In response, the FDA has recently released new Guidances for Industry, PAT-A Framework for Innovative Pharmaceutical Development, Manufacturing, and Quality Assurance and Pharmaceutical cGMP's for the 21st Century-A Risk-Based Approach, to encourage innovation in the pharmaceutical industry. The current focus is to understand the product, the manufacturing process and operations rather than the previous …

Assessing The Effects Of Fluctuating River Stage On An Mtbe Containment Plume Discharging To Surface Water, Pascoag, Ri, James L. Allen Jan 2007

Assessing The Effects Of Fluctuating River Stage On An Mtbe Containment Plume Discharging To Surface Water, Pascoag, Ri, James L. Allen

Open Access Master's Theses

Ground-water/surface-water interactions and MTBE contaminant plume discharge were investigated in a low-order river that experiences episodic river stage fluctuations. Results show that the hydraulic gradient fluctuates hourly to monthly due to river stage changes, water table recharge events, and reservoir gate adjustments. Hyporheic exchange driven by channel morphology creates small-scale gaining, losing, and parallel flow systems along the mostly gaining reach. During precipitation events, infiltrating rainfall rapidly saturates the extended capillary fringe and the shallow floodplain water table rises forming a ground-water ridge or mound and causing a steepened hydraulic gradient towards the river. The system response is magnified by …

16s Rrna Dgge Analysis Of Gut And Hepatopancreas Microflora In The Isopod Oniscus Asellus, De Vona Glover

McNair Scholars Journal

The microflora (microbes) of the gastrointestinal tract have been found to play an important role in the health of animals. In addition to pathogenic microbes and their associated negative effects, beneficial microbes have important positive effects. However, the dynamics of the transmission and colonization of the microflora between mates and between parents and offspring are still largely unknown. Variation in the microflora between individuals suggests that selection can play a role in this transmission and colonization. As a preliminary step to investigate the transfer of microflora between male and female isopods, microbial DNA from Oniscus asellus, washed and unwashed gastrointestinal …

Interactive Media—The Next Literature?, Latricia Phillips

McNair Scholars Journal

Perceptions of video games (computer games/games played on consoles) have evolved from stereotypical viewpoints that games are just a type of passive learning. My research demonstrates that video games are indeed active by categorizing levels of interactivity and by providing additional ways that they have educational value: defining the cognitive aspect, drawing a comparison between the developments of a children’s museum, and studying serious games. I then establish the relationship between video games and literature, drawing comparisons between the relationships between the author, reader, and text and the player. I conclude that video games can recategorize literature.

Transcriptomic Analysis Of Rdx And Tnt Interactive Sublethal Effects In The Earthworm Eisenia Fetida, Ping Gong, Xin Guan, Laura S. Anouye, Youping Deng, Mehdi Pirooznia, Edward J. Perkins

Faculty Publications

Background

Explosive compounds such as TNT and RDX are recalcitrant contaminants often found co-existing in the environment. In order to understand the joint effects of TNT and RDX on earthworms, an important ecological and bioindicator species at the molecular level, we sampled worms (Eisenia fetida) exposed singly or jointly to TNT (50 mg/kg soil) and RDX (30 mg/kg soil) for 28 days and profiled gene expression in an interwoven loop designed microarray experiment using a 4k-cDNA array. Lethality, growth and reproductive endpoints were measured.

Results

Sublethal doses of TNT and RDX had no significant effects on the survival …

Hand-Holding, Brow-Beating, And Shaming Into Compliance, Craig A. Max Jan 2007

Hand-Holding, Brow-Beating, And Shaming Into Compliance, Craig A. Max

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Tax authorities and policy planners have a variety of tools at their disposal to create mechanisms to encourage and enforce compliance with revenue collection systems. Traditionally, these mechanisms include the possibility of criminal prosecution as well as civil pecuniary sanctions. Despite the dominate role that prosecution and pecuniary sanctions hold internationally, there exists a range of alternative enforcement mechanisms utilized. The United States has recently started to implement nonpecuniary enforcement devices to achieve policy goals, namely the encouragement of participating with the federal taxing system. This Note attempts to take an initial step into exploring the range of international enforcement …

The Role Of International Agreements In Achieving Food Security, Jack A. Bobo Jan 2007

The Role Of International Agreements In Achieving Food Security, Jack A. Bobo

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article discusses how international agreements impact the ability of science and technology to enhance food security. International agreements, domestic laws, and regulations have the power to promote scientific research and the adoption of new technology through effective, efficient, and predictable science-based regulatory systems, or to impede development and adoption of new technology by miring it in burdensome or unnecessary regulations. This Article examines the disparate impacts of international agreements on food security through a case study of agricultural biotechnology. In particular, the Article looks at the principles and guidelines for risk assessment developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission and …

International Cooperation To Defend The Food Supply Chain, John T. Hoffman, Shaun Kennedy Jan 2007

International Cooperation To Defend The Food Supply Chain, John T. Hoffman, Shaun Kennedy

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Global Food System Defense is an area where, so far, we have not yet obtained real traction in this post-September 11, 2001 world of international terrorism. Cooperative international efforts to defend and protect the global food supply system may well be crucial to the security of every developed nation in the coming years. Affordable energy--currently fossil fuels--and food are at the heart of the security and prosperity of every nation. Yet the food protection efforts that have been historically supported by the international community have focused on traditional "food security," defined as access to sufficient calories and nutrition to sustain …

Determinants Of Young Adult Poverty: A Zip Code Level Analysis, Kaustav Misra Jan 2007

Determinants Of Young Adult Poverty: A Zip Code Level Analysis, Kaustav Misra

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The war on poverty started in America in the early 1960s, and the poverty rate of 22.4 percent in the year 1959 decreased to 11.1 percent in 1973. Regrettably, this war did not last long enough, as poverty rate increased to 15.1 percent in 1993. In the year 2000 the US poverty rate declined, but always stayed above 11.1 percent. Kentucky also did not achieve success in this poverty war, and it resulted in growing numbers of poor people. Analysis of poverty has always aroused the interest of economists, sociologists and policy makers. Goal of this paper is to intricate …

Achieving Environmental Justice For The Community Of Opportunity, Montana: An Assessment Of Superfund Concerns, Kathleen A. Hasenbank Jan 2007

Achieving Environmental Justice For The Community Of Opportunity, Montana: An Assessment Of Superfund Concerns, Kathleen A. Hasenbank

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The community of Opportunity, Montana, is surrounded by an area many consider to be the largest Superfund site in the United States. The nearby Opportunity Ponds is a major consolidation area for mining-related contaminated wastes in the state of Montana, and Opportunity residents have voiced concerns about their well water, windblown dust, and other issues since at least the late 1990s. Furthermore, the community has been subjected to ongoing environmental injustices: they feel they have been left to bear an unfair environmental burden without compensation and feel left out of important decision-making processes that affect them. I have …

Public Policy And Market Reality: Analyzing The Unfunded Liability In The Kentucky Non-Hazardous Employees' Retirement System, Kelly Dudley Jan 2007

Public Policy And Market Reality: Analyzing The Unfunded Liability In The Kentucky Non-Hazardous Employees' Retirement System, Kelly Dudley

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

In 2006, an issue of serious concern to state legislatures was the long-term security of the defined benefits that state and local public pension plans promise to current and future retirees (Snell, 2006). Public pension systems are growing in terms of members and the benefits they offer to their members. Part of this group includes the estimated 77 million baby-boomers who will be living the next 20 to 30 years in retirement (Wharton, 2006). These dynamic changes are raising the burden public pension plans place on government operating budgets. Expecting a large number of their employees to retire, public administrators …

Operation Unite: A Qualitative Analysis Identifying Critical Factors For Implementation, Crystal D. Pryor

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

UNITE is an acronym meaning Unlawful Narcotics Investigations, Treatment and Education. It reflects the three-pronged, comprehensive approach deemed necessary to combating substance abuse in Kentucky Fifth Congressional District. Of Kentucky’s 120 counties, 24 of them do not have an organized regional drug task force. Fifteen of these counties with no active drug task force are represented in the Bluegrass Area Development District’s region. Current social and political perceptions across Kentucky recognize Operation UNITE efforts as largely successful. The evaluation responded to the following research questions: What factors lead to success in Kentucky’s Operation UNITE? Are these factors transferable in treating …

An Impact Study Of Local Historic District Overlays On Property Values In Fayette County, Ky, Suzann Vogel Jan 2007

An Impact Study Of Local Historic District Overlays On Property Values In Fayette County, Ky, Suzann Vogel

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Beginning with Fayette County’s first historic district in 1958, the process of assigning historic zoning status to qualifying neighborhoods was seen as a viable option for preserving local built cultural resources. More than a communicative symbol, H-1 districting limits dramatic exterior changes and the demolition of structures certified as contributing to the unique character of Lexington, KY. Guided by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government’s Division of Historic Preservation and Board of Architectural Review, the program currently encompasses 1,851 buildings over 14 districts.

In order to carry out the goal of preservation, historic districting in Lexington is applied in a blanketing …
