Microbial Transformation Of 3-Nitro-4-Hydroxybenzene Arsonic Acid (Roxarsone), Bryan Crable
Microbial Transformation Of 3-Nitro-4-Hydroxybenzene Arsonic Acid (Roxarsone), Bryan Crable
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Land application of chicken litter from production houses that use the organoarsenical 3-nitro-4-hydroxybenzenearsonic acid (roxarsone) results in deposition of significant quantities of arsenic into United States soil each year. Used widely as a feed additive in the poultry industry, roxarsone was originally thought to be stable in the environment. However, recent evidence from our lab, as well as others, has established that this benign compound is readily transformed via several intermediates into inorganic arsenate. While microbial activity has been implicated in this process, there is no direct evidence suggesting the specific processes or the organisms involved.

Examining Factors That Affect Graduation Rates For Pennsylvania Students With Disabilities In Three Intermediate Unit Areas, Linda Jukes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine graduation rates of students with disabilities and factors that may have affected those rates. More specifically, this study compared intermediate unit and county-level data for students with disabilities in districts in 10 counties of Pennsylvania. Correlations were examined between the graduation rates of the students with disabilities in these counties and socioeconomic factors of poverty rate, median household income, and the percentage of students in the counties who were economically disadvantaged. In addition, graduation rates of students with disabilities for these same counties were examined in comparison to the results of their …

Lived Experiences: An Examination Of Older Adults' Late-Stage, Life-Span Ecological Transition From A Home Residence To An Assisted Living Facility, Christin Jungers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The population of older adults in the United States is growing rapidly, and in response to demographic changes, a new housing market for elders known as assisted living is emerging as the fastest growing segment of the senior housing arena. While the impact of the transition to institutional facilities has been examined thoroughly in settings such as nursing homes, little is known about the influences of a late-life transition to assisted living (AL) on American elders. Using a phenomenologically oriented approach, this qualitative investigation examined the lived experiences of assisted living residents as a means of adding to the literature …

History Faculty Works
As part of the discourse of progress and the promises of science, hygiene as a discipline has been playing the role of a great advisor, a sort of expert in the art of observing, correcting, improving and trying to change the health of the social body and the modern nation. In that context hygiene even imagined alternative or utopian cities. Emilio Coni, perhaps the most distinguished Argentine hygienist of the end of the 19th century and the beginnings of the 20th, imagined one of such cities. The following notes aim at contextualizing his "Argentine ideal city". The original version of …
Contributions Of Meaning By Service Professionals To The Phenomenon Of The Experience Of Coping For Women In The Spectrum Of Domestic Violence Abuse: A Leadership Perspective, Lisa Haeseler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Domestic violence abuse for women continues to be an urgent concern in American society. This perpetual problem has resulted in revitalization in improving delivery of care for women of abuse. Especially for service professionals who directly aid and council the women in the spectrum of abuse including whether they stay in, or leave, the leadership initiatives, perspectives, and unique leadership style approaches of service providers for enhancing services become vital. This qualitative, phenomenological case study of eight, non-abused service professionals working in four different agencies investigated the phenomenon of the experience of coping in the spectrum of domestic violence abuse …

Occupational Therapy: Meeting The Needs Of Individuals Diagnosed With Cancer, Kim Jones, Lonnie Music
Occupational Therapy: Meeting The Needs Of Individuals Diagnosed With Cancer, Kim Jones, Lonnie Music
Occupational Therapy Capstones
When an individual is diagnosed with cancer, he or she can experience their physical and emotional well-being threatened by fear, isolation, anxiety, depression, fatigue, disfigurement, and pain often resulting in a diminished quality of life (Rosenbaum, Gautier, Fobair, Neri, Festi, Hawn, et al. 2004). Dealing with cancer can result in the loss of independence in basic daily routines and occupations such as: dressing, cooking, taking care of the home, eating/feeding oneself, etc. While all of these challenges can diminish quality of life, they can also be minimized by ancillary intervention services such as occupational therapy (OT).
The problem is that …

Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines For Complementary And Alternative Medicine In Occupational Therapy, Kristin Murch, Angela Olson
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) within the scope of occupational therapy has the potential to add to the holistic treatment of clients with a wide range of disability or dysfunction. It has been suggested that a variety of complementary and alternative methods may be appropriate to use as an adjunctive treatment by occupational therapists with proper training and consideration of various client needs (Giese, 2005). A comprehensive literature review was conducted regarding the use of CAM with populations commonly seen by occupational therapists. Myofascial release, guided imagery, meditation, and yoga were determined to be most prevalent in the literature concerning …

Occupational Therapy Capstones
It may be a common perception in the general public that the daily tasks carried out in an office environment are not typically considered physical demanding. Office tasks, such as typing, filling out forms and filing paperwork typically do not require a significant amount of force. Work tasks associated within an office environment, especially computer use, can increase stress on the soft tissues of the body, such as muscles, tendons and nerves over time (Department of Labor, 2005). This can result in what is called musculoskeletal disorders (MSD),s.
The negative impact of MSDs affects employers through decreased work attendance, productivity …

Alzheimer's Toolbox: A Caregiver's Guide, Kristen Eastwood, Gerry Smith
Occupational Therapy Capstones
“Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia in North America and Europe” and “accounts for sixty percent of all irreversible dementia cases” (Moore, 2003, p. 50,126). Along with the 4.5 million Americans who suffer from Alzheimer’s, there are also the caregivers who are suffering alongside their loved one. The stress of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s can be overwhelming. This affects the quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s and the health of the caregiver.
A comprehensive literature review was conducted to explore and identify effective techniques and interventions, pertinent to both the caregiver and patient's …

Journal Publications
This article is about the United States federal tax code and churches. In particular, it discusses the interplay between section 501(c)(3) and churches in America. Section II presents a background of the history of the tax exemption for churches and the judicial holdings relative to that exemption. Section III explores the historical development of the separation between church and state, tax exemptions, and section 501(c)(3). Section V analyzes section 501(c)(3) under the Constitution's free speech and religion clauses. Section V proposes a recommendation, and Section VI is the conclusion.

Family Preservation: The Parents’ Perceptions, Cheryl D. Lee, Cecilia Ayon
Journal of Family Strengths
This research documents the perspective of 100 parents who had an open case with the Department of Children and Family Service’s (DCFS) regarding their family’s well-being, reasons for referral and satisfaction with services. Two DCFS services, Family Preservation (FP) and routine Family Maintenance (FM) were examined using standardized instruments. Parents’ responses regarding reasons for involvement with the system differed from DCFS administrative data. FP parents had more children, were more likely to be monolingual Spanish speakers, and perceived greater improvement in discipline and emotional care of children and housing than FM parents. FP parents reported being satisfied with services. Implications …

Globalization, Expectations Model Of Economic Nationalism, And Consumer Behavior, Syed H. Akhter
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
Purpose – The goals of the paper are to propose, measure, and empirically test the expectations model of economic nationalism. The model posits that economic nationalism is reflected in people’s expectations of their government, domestic firms, and the general public, in terms of restricting the activities of foreign firms.
Design/methodology/approach – A confirmatory factor analysis is conducted to test the model, using the LISREL procedure.
Findings – Results show acceptable fit for the proposed model. Reliability of each of the three dimensions of economic nationalism is in the acceptable range. A nomological validity test showed that economic nationalism is related …

Unpacking Pandora's Box: Innovative Techniques For Effectively Counseling Asylum Applicants Suffering From Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Carol M. Suzuki
Unpacking Pandora's Box: Innovative Techniques For Effectively Counseling Asylum Applicants Suffering From Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Carol M. Suzuki
Faculty Scholarship
Many asylum seekers are denied relief in the United States because the asylum officer or immigration judge evaluating the case does not believe the asylum applicant is telling the truth. The applicant may appear not to be credible because his story of persecution lacks sufficient detail and is inconsistent. A victim of severe and often prolonged trauma may develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which profoundly affects his ability to tell a consistent and detailed story of past persecution. Thus, an asylum seeker suffering from PTSD as a result of traumatic experiences, desperately in need of a safe haven, may be …

Felix Cohen, Anti-Semitism And American Indian Law. Book Review Of Architect Of Justice: Felix S. Cohen And The Founding Of American Legal Pluralism By Dalia Tsuk Mitchell, Kevin Washburn
Faculty Scholarship
Felix Cohen and his work and legacy are discussed in several new books, including an important intellectual biography of Cohen by Dalia Tsuk Mitchell. Using the Mitchell biography as a starting point, this essay discusses an important episode in Cohen's life, involving apparent anti-Semitism at the Department of Justice. Because the episode is not fully explored in this otherwise excellent biography, Cohen and his motivations in Indian law remain a mystery in some respects. The essay also discusses some of the paradoxes of Cohen's key involvement in federal Indian policy and the contemporary importance of some of his legacies in …

Custody, Maintenance, And Succession: The Internalization Of Women's And Children's Rights Under Customary Law In Africa, Allison D. Kent
Michigan Journal of International Law
In this Note, the author examines the process of international human rights norm internalization into areas traditionally governed exclusively by customary law, and the resulting evolution of customary law. Assuming, arguendo, that customary law is to be modified, I argue that a societal norm internalization approach is the most effective means to bring customary law into conformity with international human rights law. After a brief discussion of the fieldwork on which I rely, this Note describes the historical influence of colonialism on the development of customary law in Africa, with a particular focus on the repugnancy clauses of the …
