Evaluation Of Selected Immune Response To Haemonchus Contortus In Gulf Coast Native Compared To Suffolk Lambs, Krishna P. Shakya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Haemonchus contortus is one of the major nematode parasites causing substantial economic losses in small ruminant farming worldwide. Recently, effect of anthelmintic treatment has decreased due to an increasing problem of nematode populations that have developed resistance to anthelmintics. There are certain breeds of sheep that are identified as being relatively resistant to the parasite including Gulf Coast Native (Native) sheep. Understanding the mode of immune response that helps these breeds of sheep control infection could help design vaccines and enhance control programs. This experiment was designed to evaluate the immunological responses of Native, compared with susceptible Suffolk sheep that …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examined the remains of wooden architecture at eight Late Classic Maya sites found beneath the surface of Punta Ycacos Lagoon in southern Belize. The presence of briquetage on the surface and embedded among the clusters of wooden architectural features implies association with salt production activity. This research is significant in that the preservation of wooden structures at the salt works has not previously been reported for the ancient Maya. This dissertation includes a detailed discussion of documented evidence of salt production throughout Mesoamerica from archaeological, historical and modern examples. The discussion also addressed the evidence of Maya wooden …

Higher Education Desegregation: An Analysis Of State Efforts In Systems Formerly Operating Segregated Systems Of Higher Education, Edwin H. Litolff, Iii

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The landmark Supreme Court Decision of Brown v. the Board of Education in 1954 struck down the policy of separate but equal and set a legal precedent that racial discrimination in public education violates the United States constitution. Later the 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibited colleges and universities from discriminating based upon age, sex, race, or religion. The Civil Rights Act strengthened the enforcement capabilities of the Office of Civil Rights in ensuring desegregation. These legislative and judicial efforts have engaged higher education and state officials in often-controversial attempts to desegregate systems and institutions of higher education. Because colleges and …

A Home-Based Intervention To Promote Physical Activity In Low Income African American Adults, Dorothy Fauntleroy Whitehead

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Physical activity has long been regarded as a key component to a healthy lifestyle; however, the U.S. has disturbingly high rates of sedentary behavior and related chronic illnesses (National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2003). While many studies have attempted to address inactive lifestyle, few have reached out to high risk groups, such as African Americans and low income individuals. A recent review of the physical activity literature among African Americans called for more research with this population and encouraged future studies to focus on enduring exercise behavior (at least 6 months post intervention) and use theory-based …

The Application Of Controlled Radical Polymerization Processes On The Graft Copolymerization Of Hydrophobic Substituents Onto Guar Gum And Guar Gum Derivatives, Veronica Holmes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Guar gum is a naturally occurring polysaccharide; guar gum and its derivatives, such as carboxymethyl guar gum (CMG) are widely used in the oil and gas industry. A hydraulic fracturing fluid for rock formations to enhance oil recovery (EOR) is comprised of viscosifier, gelled CMG, and sand particles (proppants). The gel is mixed with proppant (sand) and pumped at high rate and high pressure into an oil/gas well to the hydrocarbon-producing zone. The applied pressure will force the rock formation to fracture allowing entry of the guar gel/sand mixture. The mixture then fills the resultant fracture. The viscosity of the …

"I Hear You, But I Don't Understand You": The Effects Of Peer Tutoring For Helping Secondary Esl Students Achieve Academic Success, Mary Pyron

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

When I began teaching 11th grade English in Houston, Texas, I quickly discovered that students who speak English as a second language are sometimes drastically under-prepared for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test, the state’s high stakes test required during the 11th grade year. The result of their inability to pass the test is that they do not graduate, which limits their future career and academic choices. In a semester-long research study at a typical high school in Houston, Texas, I explored the possibility of assisting ESL/LEP students transplanted to Houston as they struggled with English proficiency …

Shear Responses Of Poly(Ethylene Oxide)-Laponite Nanocomposite Hydrogels, Elena Loizou

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research seeks to understand the structure and shear responses of poly(ethylene oxide)-Laponite nanocomposite hydrogels and to relate the macroscopic physical properties to the nanoscopic structural changes. Understanding that relationship is necessary, in order to tailor material properties to specific applications. Information on the structure at rest on multiple length scales was obtained by combining microscopic and neutron scattering techniques. The structural changes that occur in response to a shear field were explored using rheology and neutron scattering. These structures were examined as a function of polymer molecular weight, polymer and clay concentrations, and sample preparation method. While the sample …

The Influence Of Controllability On College Women's Efficacy And Attributions In Physical Activity, Julie Franks Gill Jan 2007

The Influence Of Controllability On College Women's Efficacy And Attributions In Physical Activity, Julie Franks Gill

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

There is evidence that individuals’ attributional patterns are important determinants of behavior. Controllability had been identified as an influential dimension of causal attributions. When individuals believe their actions have an effect, or control, on the outcome of an event, they are more likely to engage in a behavior. Contingency of feedback can be used to manipulate perceptions of controllability. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of controllability on causal attributions, efficacy, and performance in an exercise setting, using a design that accounts for explanatory styles. It was hypothesized that non-contingent outcomes on an initial task would …

Quintet For Two Violins, Viola, Cello And Piano, And String Quartet No. 1 By Lazar Nikolov, Alexandra Dotcheva Jan 2007

Quintet For Two Violins, Viola, Cello And Piano, And String Quartet No. 1 By Lazar Nikolov, Alexandra Dotcheva

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Lazar Nikolov (1922-2005) was a representative of the so-called third generation of Bulgarian composers. Together with his closest friend, composer and conductor Konstantin Iliev, Nikolov founded the postwar avant garde in Bulgaria. He was among the first composers in Eastern Europe to abandon the influence of musical folklore and employ non-tonal techniques. Shortly before graduating from the State Academy of Music in 1946, Nikolov felt that the masters from the previous two generations had already used all the successful means to incorporate neo-Romantic features and Bulgarian folk material into art music. He was perceptive enough to recognize the danger of …

Genetics Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1 Tegument Proteins Involved In Virion Morphogenesis And Egress, Preston A. Fulmer Jan 2007

Genetics Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1 Tegument Proteins Involved In Virion Morphogenesis And Egress, Preston A. Fulmer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) morphogenesis occurs in multiple stages within infected cells. Initially, the virion capsid assembles within the nucleus and buds through the nuclear membrane into the cytoplasm. Within the cytoplasm, additional tegument proteins attach to the capsid and the fully tegumented capsids bud into trans-Golgi network (TGN) derived vesicles. Enveloped virions are ultimately secreted to extracellular spaces. The process by which the cytoplasmic capsids bud into TGN-derived vesicles is not well understood. The prevalent model calls for specific interactions among viral tegument proteins and membrane proteins and glycoproteins embedded within TGN membranes. To further investigate the roles …

Probing The Association Behavior Of Hydrophobic Organic Compounds With Dissolved Humic Materials, Hadi M. Marwani

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The association mechanism between hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC) and dissolved humic materials (DHM) has continued to be one of the interesting areas in environmental applications. The goal of the research reported in this dissertation is to investigate the association behavior of HOC with DHM. The first part of this research involves steady-state fluorescence measurements of these multi-component systems to study the effect of DHM content on the association mechanism of HOC, in particular using pyrene as a model. Results showed that steady-state fluorescence alone may not provide enough information about the quenching mechanism of pyrene with DHM. Lifetime based fluorescence …

Identifying Effective And Ineffective Schools For Accountability Purposes: A Comparison Of Four Generic Types Of Accountability Models, Fen Yu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The stakes associated with student performance have been raised to new highs under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB, 2001). Many people are concerned with the adequacy and appropriateness of the statistical models used in identifying low-performing schools for educational accountability. The purpose of this study was to compare four generic types of accountability models (i.e., status models, improvement models, growth models, and value-added models) and see if they reach consistent/inconsistent conclusions regarding the effectiveness of the same set of schools. Further, the four models were also compared in terms of “fairness”. A fair model is defined as one …

The Microeconomics Of International Price Dispersion, Ozlem Inanc Jan 2007

The Microeconomics Of International Price Dispersion, Ozlem Inanc

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the reasons behind international price dispersion. The first essay, “International Price Dispersion and the Direction of Trade”, discusses the importance of trade cost as a determinant of international price dispersion. The importance of trade costs in segmenting product markets can not be captured by considering aggregate prices or in the absence of information on the direction of trade. The first essay, addresses this problem by utilizing product-specific prices along with cross-sectional productivity measures and bilateral trade flows that allow us to identify the probable source of any one product. The empirical approach used in this work is …

Effects Of Aversive Conditioning On Behavior Of Nuisance Louisiana Black Bears, Jennifer Leigh Jan 2007

Effects Of Aversive Conditioning On Behavior Of Nuisance Louisiana Black Bears, Jennifer Leigh

LSU Master's Theses

Consistent habitat loss and fragmentation are contributing factors to the rise of human-bear conflicts in south Louisiana. Complaints associated with nuisance activities of Louisiana black bears (Ursus americanus luteolus) experienced in this region have steadily increased since 2000, requiring intervention by state and federal agencies. As a threatened species, Louisiana black bears require non-lethal management referred to as aversive conditioning. We used rubber buckshot and dogs to test the effectiveness of management techniques used by the state to deter nuisance activity by black bears. Eleven bears, representing approximately 15% of the estimated population in this region, were captured in residential …

Isolation And Characterization Of The Siamese Family: A Novel Class Of Cell Cycle Regulators In Plants, Michelle Lynn Churchman Jan 2007

Isolation And Characterization Of The Siamese Family: A Novel Class Of Cell Cycle Regulators In Plants, Michelle Lynn Churchman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Recessive mutations in the SIAMESE (SIM) gene of Arabidopsis result in multicellular trichomes harboring individual nuclei with a low ploidy level, a phenotype strikingly different from that of wild-type trichomes, which are single cells with a nuclear DNA content of approximately 16-32C. These observations suggested that SIM is required to suppress mitosis as part of the switch to endoreplication in trichomes. We demonstrate that SIM encodes a novel 14kD protein that is part of a small Arabidopsis gene family comprised of four members. Homologs exist in other dicots and in monocots, although no obvious animal homologs have been identified. SIM …
