Corn–Velvetleaf (Abutilon Theophrasti ) Interference Is Affected By Sublethal Doses Of Postemergence Herbicides, Brescia R. M. Terra, Alexander R. Martin, John L. Lindquist

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Injury to weeds from sublethal doses of POST herbicides may reduce the effect of weed interference on crop yield. Information on how herbicide dose influences weed mortality, growth, and seed production is needed to assess the potential benefit of applying reduced herbicide doses. Field experiments were conducted at Mead, NE, in 2001 and 2002 to quantify velvetleaf mortality, growth, and corn–velvetleaf interference in response to varying doses of three POST herbicides. Untreated velvetleaf at six densities (0, 1, 3, 6, 12, and 20 plants m-1 corn row) was grown in mixture with corn to establish a baseline corn–velvetleaf interference …

Interdisciplinary Management Of Diabetic Eye Disease: A Global Approach To Care, Annette Bade, Joseph J. Pizzimenti Jan 2007

Interdisciplinary Management Of Diabetic Eye Disease: A Global Approach To Care, Annette Bade, Joseph J. Pizzimenti

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Diabetic eye disease is a leading cause of acquired blindness in the United States. Most cases of blindness secondary to diabetes mellitus are preventable. In addition to exercise, proper diet, and aggressive glycemic control, patients with diabetes mellitus should be educated to adhere to established guidelines for an annual dilated retinal evaluation. The ideal model of care for patients with diabetic eye disease is an interdisciplinary, team-oriented approach with the patient as the central member of the healthcare team. The primary purpose of this paper is to present an interdisciplinary approach to management of the ocular complications of diabetes mellitus …

Serum Igg Concentrations Of Neonatal Calves Fed Colostrum Replacer Supplemented With Lactoferrin, Erin C. Shea

Master's Theses and Capstones

The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of various levels of lactoferrin supplementation in colostrum replacer fed as 1 or 2 doses on apparent efficiency of IgG absorption, serum IgG concentrations, and intestinal development in neonatal Holstein bull calves. Eighty-Holstein bull calves were assigned to a 2 x 4 factorial arrangement of treatments in a completely randomized block design. Bull calves were collected at two locations, Fairchild Teaching and Research Center at the University of New Hampshire (n = 48) and a commercial dairy (n = 32). All calves were fed colostrum replacer (CR) according to manufacturer's …

Self-Disclosure And Self-Management In Young Adults With Early-Onset Adult Type 2 Diabetes, Geraldine M. Chalykoff Jan 2007

Self-Disclosure And Self-Management In Young Adults With Early-Onset Adult Type 2 Diabetes, Geraldine M. Chalykoff

Open Access Dissertations

Early-onset adult type 2 diabetes, which strikes young adults aged 18-44 years, poses a significant health threat. Adequate self-management requires that young adults perform medical tasks and practice healthy lifestyle behaviors in social situations of everyday life. Few researchers have examined whether these young adults disclose their illness to others and if self-disclosure is linked to diabetes self-management. A descriptive and exploratory study was designed to answer the following research questions: (1) To what extent do young adults with early onset type 2 diabetes identify instances of illness related self-disclosure during the course of their disease? (2) What is the …

Letting Katz Out Of The Bag: Cognitive Freedom And Fourth Amendment Fidelity, Christian Halliburton Jan 2007

Letting Katz Out Of The Bag: Cognitive Freedom And Fourth Amendment Fidelity, Christian Halliburton

Faculty Articles

Emerging surveillance technologies now allow operators to collect information located within the brain of an individual, allow the collection of forensic evidence regarding cerebral and cognitive processes, and are even beginning to be able to predict human intentions. While science has not yet produced a mind-reading machine per se, the devices referred to as cognitive camera technologies are substantial steps in the direction of that inevitable result. One such technique, a proprietary method called Brain Fingerprinting, is used as an example of the strong trend towards increasingly invasive and ever more powerful surveillance methods, and provides an entrée to a …

Committing A Crime While A Refugee: Rethinking The Issue Of Deportation In Light Of The Principle Against Double Jeopardy, Won Kidane Jan 2007

Committing A Crime While A Refugee: Rethinking The Issue Of Deportation In Light Of The Principle Against Double Jeopardy, Won Kidane

Faculty Articles

The Double Jeopardy Clause of the United States Constitution provides: No person shall...be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb . . . If a refugee who has committed a deportable offense and served his sentence is subsequently deported from a place where he calls home to a place where he would face persecution, he could literally be said to have been twice put in jeopardy of life and limb. That seems to be a prima facie violation of the Double Jeopardy Clause of the Fifth Amendment. This constitutional guarantee is, however, …

No Mud Pies: Risk Avoidance As Risk Regulation, Catherine O’Neill Jan 2007

No Mud Pies: Risk Avoidance As Risk Regulation, Catherine O’Neill

Faculty Articles

Regulation in the environmental context has, until recently, been guided by risk reduction - strategies that require risk-producers to prevent, limit, or clean up contaminants. However, it has increasingly come to rely on "risk avoidance" - strategies that call upon risk-bearers to alter their practices and ways of living so as to avoid exposure to contaminants left unabated. For example, women and children might be asked to eliminate fish from their diets to avoid the risks of methylmercury contamination; asthmatics might be advised to refrain from going outside on "ozone alert" days to avoid the risks of ground-level ozone pollution; …

Stage Profiles And Predictors Of Exercise In A Multiple Risk Sample, Gabriela Dye Jan 2007

Stage Profiles And Predictors Of Exercise In A Multiple Risk Sample, Gabriela Dye

Open Access Dissertations

Cluster and Latent class analyses were used to examine within Stage profiles of individuals at-risk for three behaviors based on their perceived Pros, Cons, and Self-efficacy. In addition, Structural equation and Latent variable modeling were used to examine the predictors of 12 months exercise participation. The results of Cluster and Latent class analyses did not replicate the results of previous studies, which delineated at least four distinct profiles within the Stages. Only two to three profiles emerged within each Stage as well as within the full dataset. Most two-cluster/class, and three-cluster/class solutions consisted of at least one cluster with extremely …

Personal Motivation, Body Image, Health Behavior And Stage Of Exercising, Erica Rose Checko Jan 2007

Personal Motivation, Body Image, Health Behavior And Stage Of Exercising, Erica Rose Checko

Open Access Dissertations

Despite the well-documented links between regular physical activity and health in both the mental and physical domains, facilitation of exercise adherence is a major practical issue in health promotion. In today's society, many people are either sedentary or too infrequently active to accrue health benefits. Previous research suggests that intrinsic motivation plays a particularly salient role in the exercise behavior process and may be implicated in long-term maintenance. The primary goal of this study is to identify the motivational factors that contribute to regular exercise. A major focus will be on the potential relationship of motivational factors and body image …

Parental Involvement As Predictor Of 9 Th Grade Latino Students' Intention To Complete High School Mediated By Student School Beliefs After A One Year Follow-Up, Jasmine A. Mena

Open Access Dissertations

Latinos, currently the largest ethnic minority group in the U.S. comprising 12.5% of the population, less likely to graduate from high school than Asians, Whites, and African Americans. Due to the grave implications of low education for economic and social opportunities, an investigation of the variables related to intent to graduate among Latino youth was conducted. The focus of this study was to increase our understanding of the role parents play in students' formation of their intentions to complete high school. A survey was conducted with 137 Latino high school students in 2004. The survey involved questions about their perceptions …

Electrostatic Charge Polarity Effect On Respiratory Deposition In The Glass Bead Tracheobronchial Airways Model, Mohammed Ali, Malay K. Mazumder, Rama N. Reddy, Mariofanna Milanova, Jing Zhang, Alexandru S. Biris

Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The effects of unipolar and bipolar electrostatic charges on the deposition efficiency of therapeutic aerosols in the physical model of human tracheobronchial (TB) airways have been investigated. Respirable size aerosol particles were generated by a commonly prescribed and commercially available nebulizer and charged by a corona charger and then their size and charge distributions were characterized by an Electronic Single ParticleAerodynamic Relaxation Time analyzer to study the drug aerosol particles' deposition pattern. The experiments were performed with a glass bead tracheobronchial model (GBTBM) (physical model) which was designed and developed based upon widely used and adopted dichotomous lung morphometric data …

Administering The Clean Water Act: Do Regulators Have "Bigger Fish To Fry" When It Comes To Addressing The Practice Of Chumming On The Chesapeake Bay?, Hope M. Babcock Jan 2007

Administering The Clean Water Act: Do Regulators Have "Bigger Fish To Fry" When It Comes To Addressing The Practice Of Chumming On The Chesapeake Bay?, Hope M. Babcock

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Chesapeake Bay is one of the country's most productive estuaries. However, for decades the health of the Bay has been declining due in large part to nutrification. Excessive nutrients encourage algal blooms, which lower dissolved oxygen and increase turbidity in the Bay's waters. More than 40% of the Bay's main stern is now dead largely as a result of this problem. The practice of chumming, the discarding of baitfish, usually menhaden, over the sides of fishing boats to attract game fish like striped bass, is contributing to the Bay's nutrification problem because the decomposing chum raises the waters biological …
