A Statistical Appraisal Of Disproportional Versus Proportional Microbial Source Tracking Libraries, Brian J. Robinson, Kerry J. Ritter, Rudolph D. Ellender Dec 2007

A Statistical Appraisal Of Disproportional Versus Proportional Microbial Source Tracking Libraries, Brian J. Robinson, Kerry J. Ritter, Rudolph D. Ellender

Faculty Publications

Library-based microbial source tracking (MST) can assist in reducing or eliminating fecal pollution in waters by predicting sources of fecal-associated bacteria. Library-based MST relies on an assembly of genetic or phenotypic "fingerprints" from pollution-indicative bacteria cultivated from known sources to compare with and identify fingerprints of unknown origin. The success of the library-based approach depends on how well each source candidate is represented in the library and which statistical algorithm or matching criterion is used to match unknowns. Because known source libraries are often built based on convenience or cost, some library sources may contain more representation than others. Depending …

Defining And Determining Retardation In Texas Capital Murder Defendants: A Proposal To The Texas Legislature., Graham Baker Dec 2007

Defining And Determining Retardation In Texas Capital Murder Defendants: A Proposal To The Texas Legislature., Graham Baker

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

Although the Supreme Court of the United States ruled it is cruel and unusual to execute someone with a mental handicap, Texas statutes still do not adequately protect these individuals. Previously, the Court in Penry v. Lynaugh upheld states executing individuals with mental deficiencies. However, individual states began to outlaw such a practice. When the Court heard Atkins v. Virginia, they determined the states created a national consensus against executing persons who possess certain developmental disabilities, thus rendering it cruel and unusual. Atkins did not, however, define mental retardation and left it up to individual states to determine that criteria. …

True Colors Shining Through: Cooperative Extension Strengths In Time Of Disaster, Leanna Cathey, Paul Coreil, Mark Schexnayder, Rebecca White

Journal of Extension

Responding to the destruction brought to Louisiana by hurricanes Katrina and Rita proved extraordinarily challenging for the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES). Responding to and recovering from such widespread destruction also provided valuable insights into the vital services that state Cooperative Extension Services have the capability to provide. In this Commentary, we share just a few of the insights we gained from surviving these disasters and provide some "lessons learned" that we hope you will find valuable as you consider the essential roles you play in your communities.

Research To Action: A Campus-Community Partnership To Address Health Issues Of The Food Insecure, Kimberly Greder, Steven Garasky, Susan Klein

Journal of Extension

A university-community partnership assessed the food security and health status of food pantry participants in a midwestern urban community. Eighty percent of households surveyed were food insecure, and 40% experienced fair or poor health. The sample experienced higher rates of chronic disease than the general population. A nutrition education program designed to meet specific nutrition and health-related needs of pantry participants was developed. Implications include training pantry staff about chronic disease and its relationship to nutrition, identifying pantry foods that provide positive health benefits, and developing consumer publications focused on selecting and preparing pantry foods when one has chronic disease.

Organic Farmers' Need For And Attitude Towards Extension, Robert Agunga, Chris Igodan Dec 2007

Organic Farmers' Need For And Attitude Towards Extension, Robert Agunga, Chris Igodan

Journal of Extension

The study reported here sought to determine sustainable agriculture farmers' perceived attitude towards Extension. A random sample of 99 sustainable agriculture farmers in Ohio showed a highly favorable attitude towards Extension and an expression of a great need for Extension information, particularly on environmental issues. However, the study also found that the vast majority of sustainable agriculture farmers do not feel that Extension educators neither understand the needs of sustainable agriculture farmers nor have the know-how to assist them. Thus, the researchers recommend an examination of Extension educators' need for sustainable agriculture training.

Perceptions And Preferences Of Extension Programming And Sources Among Extension Users And Non-Users: 10 Kansas Counties, Kristina M. Boone, Linda Sleichter, Rick Miller, Sharon Breiner

Journal of Extension

County Extension personnel are challenged to serve the public while facing changing population density and diversity. Moreover, needs and satisfaction vary among Extension clients and non-clients. With this in mind, 10 of the most populous counties in Kansas, with the aid of a university researcher, conducted an evaluation to determine programming needs of both clients and non-clients. Findings indicate that non-clients and clients prioritize programming differently and prefer different delivery mechanisms. The results have allowed these counties to tailor their programming and marketing efforts to these two unique groups, while also serving as a basis for a collective marketing plan.

The Role Of The West Virginia Extension Service In Forestry Education And Technical Assistance, David W. Mcgill, Larry G. Campbell, Chad Pierskalla

Journal of Extension

We conducted a survey of county-based West Virginia University Extension Service personnel to clarify the contribution of the organization to forestry outreach education in the state. Questionnaires were mailed to 235 Extension personnel, and 76% responded. Despite few with advanced forestry training, 65% receive forestry-related questions, and 72% of those answer an average of 24% of the questions. The proportion of forestry questions answered by Extension personnel was found to vary as a function of position and program. Referrals of questions to other agencies went most frequently to the West Virginia Division of Forestry and secondarily to other Extension personnel.

Use Of The Plate-Waste Method To Measure Food Intake In Children, Cheryl C. Jacko, Jocilyn Dellava, Karen Ensle, Daniel J. Hoffman Dec 2007

Use Of The Plate-Waste Method To Measure Food Intake In Children, Cheryl C. Jacko, Jocilyn Dellava, Karen Ensle, Daniel J. Hoffman

Journal of Extension

Childhood overweight is increasing in the U.S. and is often associated with excess food intake. Because children consume at least one meal in school approximately half the days each year, it is important to develop accurate and cost-effective methods to measure food intake in schools. We compared the aggregated plate waste method with actual weighed food measurements. The aggregated plate waste measurements were similar to the energy and macronutrient intake determined by weighed food measurements. The plate waste methodology is a simple and accurate method that can be implemented by Extension professionals and teachers to assess children's energy intake.

Healing Gardens For Assisted Living: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Health Education, Claudia C. Collins, Angela M. O’Callaghan Dec 2007

Healing Gardens For Assisted Living: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Health Education, Claudia C. Collins, Angela M. O’Callaghan

Journal of Extension

There is a serious lack of health promotion programs for seniors transitioning from living in their own homes to assisted living. Research has demonstrated that horticulture and gardening can benefit people who are institutionalized. Aging and horticulture specialists at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension collaborated to create a healing garden project at Nevada's first low-income assisted living facility in Las Vegas. The goal was to enhance residents' quality-of life through a less traditional educational process. This process expands the scope and reach of Extension programs to a much larger and more diverse audience.

Food Allergies: Safe Food Handling To Prevent Triggering An Allergic Reaction, Carol Byrd-Bredbenner, Jaclyn Maurer Dec 2007

Food Allergies: Safe Food Handling To Prevent Triggering An Allergic Reaction, Carol Byrd-Bredbenner, Jaclyn Maurer

Journal of Extension

The prevalence of food allergies is on the rise, especially among children. Safe food handling is important for preventing triggering a food allergic reaction. Guidelines for safe food handling for food allergies are scarce; therefore, data from key-informant interviews with health professionals, food professionals, and the public were used to develop educational factsheets for food service and child caretakers. These factsheets can be used by Extension professionals for both self-education and outreach education on this increasingly important health topic.

Tools To Help Horse Owners Deal With Muddy High-Traffic Areas, Elizabeth A. Greene Dec 2007

Tools To Help Horse Owners Deal With Muddy High-Traffic Areas, Elizabeth A. Greene

Journal of Extension

Muddy and overstocked horse paddocks are a common sight at riding stables. The University of Vermont equine program has improved the conditions at the horse facility by renovating the worst portion (gate area) of the paddocks, thereby allowing drainage under the compacted area. After the renovation of three paddocks one fall, the decrease in mud and ice was so remarkable that the four remaining paddocks were renovated in the spring. A full-color pictorial guide was created to show others how the renovation process works.

Extremism And Social Learning, Cass R. Sunstein, Edward L. Glaeser Dec 2007

Extremism And Social Learning, Cass R. Sunstein, Edward L. Glaeser

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

When members of deliberating groups speak with one another, their predeliberation tendencies often become exacerbated as their views become more extreme. The resulting phenomenon—group polarization—has been observed in many settings, and it bears on the actions of juries, administrative tribunals, corporate boards, and other institutions. Polarization can result from rational Bayesian updating by group members, but in many contexts, this rational interpretation of polarization seems implausible. We argue that people are better seen as Credulous Bayesians, who insufficiently adjust for idiosyncratic features of particular environments and put excessive weight on the statements of others where there are 1) common sources …

Modulation Of Tgf-Beta Signaling By Proinflammatory Cytokines In Articular Chondrocytes., Jorge A. Roman-Blas, David G. Stokes, Sergio A. Jimenez Dec 2007

Modulation Of Tgf-Beta Signaling By Proinflammatory Cytokines In Articular Chondrocytes., Jorge A. Roman-Blas, David G. Stokes, Sergio A. Jimenez

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: The normal structure and function of articular cartilage are the result of a precisely balanced interaction between anabolic and catabolic processes. The transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) family of growth factors generally exerts an anabolic or repair response; in contrast, proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 1 beta (IL-1beta) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) exert a strong catabolic effect. Recent evidence has shown that IL-1beta, and TNF-alpha, and the TGF-beta signaling pathways share an antagonistic relationship. The aim of this study was to determine whether the modulation of the response of articular chondrocytes to TGF-beta by IL-1beta or TNF-alpha signaling pathways …

Efficacy Of Cognitive Therapy And Pharmacotherapy In Depression: A Meta-Analysis, Daniel B. Michel Dec 2007

Efficacy Of Cognitive Therapy And Pharmacotherapy In Depression: A Meta-Analysis, Daniel B. Michel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A meta-analysis comparing the long-term effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy in preventing relapse following treatment discontinuation was performed using published studies of depressed participants. Twenty-three articles met inclusionary criteria and were included in the analyses. Weighted effect sizes and moderators, treatment type, were calculated using statistical analysis software. Initially, fixed effects models were applied to the data, but due to significant between-group heterogeneity that could not be fully explained by treatment type, mixed effect models were used to account for the residual heterogeneity. Results indicated that overall, depressed individuals treated to remission with CBT evidence decreased relapse …

Temporal Fatty Acid Fluctuations Of Pachygrapsus Crassipes In Southern California, April Dawn Sjoboen Dec 2007

Temporal Fatty Acid Fluctuations Of Pachygrapsus Crassipes In Southern California, April Dawn Sjoboen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The current investigation identified fatty acids (FAs) and quantified total and specific FA concentrations in the striped shore crab, Pachygrapsus crassipes. I examined changes in the abundance of individual FAs and FA saturation categories (saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated) over months and between sexes. Fatty acid fluctuations were compared with reported temperatures from a location near the collection site to determine whether temperature significantly contributed to these changes. The abundances of palmitoleic acid, palmitic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were found to fluctuate significantly on a monthly basis, with a higher abundance in warm months than in cold months. This fluctuation appeared …

Distraction Of Heterotopic Bone Formed With Bmp-2 In A Rat Model: The Technique, Stacie Dawn Fenderson Dec 2007

Distraction Of Heterotopic Bone Formed With Bmp-2 In A Rat Model: The Technique, Stacie Dawn Fenderson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Multiple studies have shown that ectopic bone forms when bone morphogenic proteins (for example BMP-2 and BMP-7) and a collagen matrix are surgically placed in a rat model either orthotopically or heterotopically. Bone begins to form by the 14 day, and is at it maximum calcified state by the 21st day. The purpose of this study is to observe and quantify the effect of distraction osteogenesis on the ectopic bone. First, a preliminary procedure was performed by surgically placing a titanium cage into the back of a rat just caudal to the thoracic vertebrae. The anterior corners were sutured to …

The Effects Of The Quadhelix Appliance On The Dentition And Adjacent Buccal Bone, Shannon Hilgers Dec 2007

The Effects Of The Quadhelix Appliance On The Dentition And Adjacent Buccal Bone, Shannon Hilgers

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Maxillary palatal expansion has long been used in orthodontics as a means of correcting constricted and collapsed dental arches. The quadhelix appliance, developed by Drs. Robert Ricketts and Ruel Bench, expands buccal segments and causes distobuccal rotation in upper first molars. The objective of this study was to assess the direct effects that the quadhelix appliance on the surrounding dentition and buccal bone in the maxillary premolar and molar areas in a finite, measurable manner. This assessment was made using the NewTom 3G. The pre-quadhelix and post-quadhelix NewTom 3G images of twenty patients treated in the Graduate Orthodontic Clinic at …
