Hospice Nurses, Spiritual Development And A Changing Health Care Paradigm, Amy L. Barr Jan 2007

Hospice Nurses, Spiritual Development And A Changing Health Care Paradigm, Amy L. Barr

Master's Theses and Capstones

Recently researchers have become increasingly interested in how we are going to care for our growing elderly population. Little, however, has been done to examine the personal attitudes toward death, dying and spirituality of the professionals who care for the terminally ill. The purpose of this study is to examine spiritual development among hospice nurses who work in palliative care. Data were obtained using qualitative, in-depth interviews with 20 hospice nurses (4 males, 16 females) from ages 36 to 61. The interviews were conducted at three different hospice organizations located in the northwest, northeast and New England regions of the …

Tax And Economic Policy Responses To The Medicaid Long-Term Care Financing Crisis: A Behavioral Economics Approach, Diane Lourdes Dick Jan 2007

Tax And Economic Policy Responses To The Medicaid Long-Term Care Financing Crisis: A Behavioral Economics Approach, Diane Lourdes Dick

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article examines the escalating strain on Medicaid due to rising long-term care costs and an aging population, emphasizing the ineffectiveness of current policies promoting private insurance. It critiques traditional economic models for neglecting behavioral factors like emotional resistance to planning for aging and underestimating future care needs. The analysis concludes that voluntary measures, such as tax incentives and partnership programs, are insufficient and advocates for a universal compulsory program to ensure adequate preparation for long-term care, thereby reducing Medicaid reliance.

Does Increasing Biology Teacher Knowledge Of Evolution And The Nature Of Science Lead To Greater Advocacy For The Teaching Of Evolution In Schools?, Ross Nehm, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

This study investigated whether or not an increase in secondary science teacher knowledge about evolution and the nature of science gained from completing a graduate-level evolution course was associated with greater preference for the teaching of evolution in schools. Forty-four precertified secondary biology teachers participated in a 14-week intervention designed to address documented misconceptions identified by a precourse instrument. The course produced statistically significant gains in teacher knowledge of evolution and the nature of science and a significant decrease in misconceptions about evolution and natural selection. Nevertheless, teachers' postcourse preference positions remained unchanged; the majority of science teachers still preferred …

Job Characteristics And The Psychological Well-Being Of Older Workers, Anne M. Shattuck Jan 2007

Job Characteristics And The Psychological Well-Being Of Older Workers, Anne M. Shattuck

Master's Theses and Capstones

Changes in public and private pensions as well as demographic and economic changes will likely lead to higher labor force participation rates for older adults in the future. Little research has examined the impact of work on the well-being of older adults beyond simply comparing those who work with those who do not. Using data from the 2002 and 2004 waves of the Health and Retirement Study, this thesis examined whether specific job characteristics---namely job flexibility, job stress, and the workplace climate's friendliness to older workers---were associated with depressive symptoms among a group of workers aged 62 to 73. Cross-sectional …

Diabetes Self-Management In The Migrant Latino Population, Dawn Weiler, Janice D. Crist Jan 2007

Diabetes Self-Management In The Migrant Latino Population, Dawn Weiler, Janice D. Crist

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article will present an in-depth exploration and synthesis of current literature that informs nursing knowledge of diabetes self-management for the migrant Latino population. Extensive research in diabetes care has been conducted, however, there is a significant knowledge gap related to the factors that influence the achievement of glycemic control and self-management practices of the Latino population. Based on well-documented disparities in complications and health outcomes among Latinos when compared with White Americans, there is sufficient evidence to question whether traditional White beliefs about self-management are successful or appropriate for the Latino population in general and migrants specifically. Traditional models …

Interleukin-6 And Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha Values In Elk Neonates, Shannon M. Barber-Meyer, Craig R. Johnson, Michael P. Murtaugh, L. David Mech, P. J. White

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Serological indicators of general condition would be helpful for monitoring or assessing ungulate wildlife. Toward that end, we report the 1st reference values for 2 cytokines, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), in neonatal elk (Cervus elaphus). We obtained blood samples from 140 calves ≤ 6 days old in Yellowstone National Park during summer 2003–2005. IL-6 values ranged from 0 to 1.21 pg/ml with a median of 0.03 pg/ml. TNF-α values ranged from 0 to 225.43 pg/ml with a median of 1.85 pg/ml. IL-6 and TNF-α concentrations were not significant predictors of elk calf survival through 21 …

Multilevel Models For Examining Individual Differences In Within-Person Variation And Covariation Over Time, Lesa Hoffman Jan 2007

Multilevel Models For Examining Individual Differences In Within-Person Variation And Covariation Over Time, Lesa Hoffman

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Heterogeneity of variance may be more than a statistical nuisance—it may be of direct interest as a result of individual differences. In studies of short-term fluctuation, individual differences may relate to the magnitude of within-person variation as well as to level of an outcome or its covariation with other processes. Although models for heterogeneous variances have been utilized in group contexts (i.e., dispersion models), they are not usually applied in examinations of intraindividual variation. This work illustrates how an extension of the multilevel model for heterogeneous variances can be used to examine individual differences in level, between- and within-person covariation, …

On The Use Of Multilevel Modeling As An Alternative To Items Analysis In Psycholinguistic Research, Lawrence Locker Jr., Lesa Hoffman, James A. Bovaird Jan 2007

On The Use Of Multilevel Modeling As An Alternative To Items Analysis In Psycholinguistic Research, Lawrence Locker Jr., Lesa Hoffman, James A. Bovaird

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The use of multilevel modeling is presented as an alternative to separate item and subject ANOVAs (F1 x F2) in psycholinguistic research. Multilevel modeling is commonly utilized to model variability arising from the nesting of lower level observations within higher level units (e.g., students within schools, repeated measures within individuals). However, multilevel models can also be used when two random factors are crossed at the same level, rather than nested. The current work illustrates the use of the multilevel model for crossed random effects within the context of a psycholinguistic experimental study, in which both subjects …

Ecological Momentary Assessment Of Older Women's Health, Janice Penrod, Jeremy B. Yorgason, Susan J. Loeb, Chin-Fang Liu, Lesa Hoffman, Sarah H. Gueldner, Leonard W. Poon Jan 2007

Ecological Momentary Assessment Of Older Women's Health, Janice Penrod, Jeremy B. Yorgason, Susan J. Loeb, Chin-Fang Liu, Lesa Hoffman, Sarah H. Gueldner, Leonard W. Poon

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Living with chronic co-morbidities implies long-lasting, always present conditions associated with highly variable health trajectories. In this study, ecological momentary assessment was used to explore nine older women's experiences of living with co-morbidities. Each participant completed a daily diary, which focused on 10 variables related to energy, pain, effort expended, and an overall health rating, for 21 days. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to explore intra-individual variation in daily health experiences and health-related burden, and determine the extent to which health-related burden was related to daily health experiences. Each of the daily health experience variables sipiificantly predicted health-related burden. Over …

Changes In Cognitive And Sensory Abilities Of Older Pilots Parallel Those Observed In The General Population, C.A. Miller, A. Chaparro Jan 2007

Changes In Cognitive And Sensory Abilities Of Older Pilots Parallel Those Observed In The General Population, C.A. Miller, A. Chaparro

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007

This investigation compares young and older pilots with age-matched controls from the general population on cognitive and sensory abilities. Cognitive assessments included short-term and long-term memory, learning, delayed recognition and mental rotation. Sensory measures included visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, auditory thresholds, speech intelligibility and tactile sensitivity. Significant differences in contrast sensitivity was obtained as a function of age and pilot status. Also, young pilots (24-42 years) have greater tactile sensitivity than older pilots (64-88 years), and both non-pilot groups. In general, younger participants performed better on the assessments than the older subjects regardless of pilot status. Although, the mean differences …

Engaging Our Workforce: How Job Demands And Resources Contribute To Social Worker Burnout, Engagement And Intent To Leave, Sara Laura Schwartz Jan 2007

Engaging Our Workforce: How Job Demands And Resources Contribute To Social Worker Burnout, Engagement And Intent To Leave, Sara Laura Schwartz

Dissertations and Theses

Social worker stress and burnout are pervasive problems that harm workers, organizations, and clients. Past research has identified burnout, a psychological response to work stress, as an important predictor of intent to leave and ultimate turnover. An emerging body of research has examined work engagement, considered to be the opposite of burnout, as a predictor of retention. The problem of burnout and turnover within organizations employing social workers has been addressed in the literature for many years. This dissertation responded to a call in the literature for a greater emphasis on burnout prevention and enhancement of workforce engagement and retention. …

Concordance Of Self-Report And Informant Assessment Of Emotional Well-Being In Nursing Home Residents With Dementia, Ann M. Kolanowski, Lesa Hoffman, Scott M. Hofer Jan 2007

Concordance Of Self-Report And Informant Assessment Of Emotional Well-Being In Nursing Home Residents With Dementia, Ann M. Kolanowski, Lesa Hoffman, Scott M. Hofer

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The emotional well-being of persons with dementia is an aspect of their quality of life. We examined the stability of informant-rated and self-reported emotion, and the influence of mental status and physical dependence on ratings; we modeled concordance between ratings at both the within- and between-person levels of analysis. We used multilevel modeling to examine data collected over 12 days from 31 nursing home residents. We found significant within-person variation in both informant-rated and self-reported emotion, such that between 40% and 60% of the overall variance in each occurred within persons. We found little correspondence between or within persons between …

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the most prevalent risk factor for stroke. METHODS: We performed a descriptive and analytical prospective study on patients with stroke admitted to the neurology wards of Imam Hospital, Tabriz, Iran during 2004 and 2005. The study comprised 100 ischemic stroke (IS) patients consisting of 46 men and 54 women with a mean age of 67 +/- 15, and 100 age and gender matched apparently healthy subjects. Plasma levels of C-Reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, platelet counts, lipoprotein (a) (LP (a)), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), total cholesterol (TC), and triglycerides (TG) were measured in both …

Social Security And Government Deficits: When Should We Worry?, Neil H. Buchanan Jan 2007

Social Security And Government Deficits: When Should We Worry?, Neil H. Buchanan

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In this Article, I critically examine the assumption that the Social Security system faces a financing crisis and that the government can avert the crisis only by acting now to cut benefits or to raise taxes. The best conclusion we can draw from the current evidence is that the system is not doomed and that it is not necessary to institute immediate changes. We should, of course, continue to monitor the situation closely to determine whether future changes become necessary. This conclusion is further strengthened by the likelihood that any changes the government makes to the Social Security system today …

Source Memory And The Picture Superiority Effect, Noelle L. Brown Jan 2007

Source Memory And The Picture Superiority Effect, Noelle L. Brown

LSU Master's Theses

Two experiments were conducted to explore whether a picture superiority effect exists in source memory. To investigate this issue, participants studied a mixed list of pictures and words. Experiment 1 tested people's memory for an organizational source where half the pictures and words were studied on the left or right side of a computer monitor. In Experiment 2 an associative source was tested. During encoding half of the pictures and words were associated with a female voice and the other half with a male voice. At test, participants' memory for the location or voice of the pictures and words was …
