Age-Related Dgc Structure And Function In The F344/N X Bn Rat Heart, Sunil K. Kakarla
Age-Related Dgc Structure And Function In The F344/N X Bn Rat Heart, Sunil K. Kakarla
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Recent data has suggested that disruption of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex (DGC) may be involved in mediating the progression of cardiac hypertrophy and failure. Here we examined the regulation of DGC proteins in the hearts of adult (6 months), aged (30 months), and very aged (36 months) F344/N X BN rats . Compared to adult animals, the content of α- and β-dystroglycan were 6.93 ± 5.16% and 58.36 ± 3.64% higher, respectively (P < 0.05) in very aged animals. Immunoblotting and immunhistochemical analysis suggested that aging appeared to diminish alpha-sarcoglycan, beta-sarcoglycan and delta-sarcoglycan content by 13.89 ± 3.1%,15.8 ± 2.8% and 18.63 ± 3.04%, respectively (P < 0.05). These alterations in the DGC occurred coincident with age- associated alterations in cytoplasmic anti-rat IgG immunoreactivity, TUNEL positive nuclei, alpha-fodrin cleavage, indices of caspase-3 activation and diminished AKT phosphoryation (Ser 308). Taken together, these data suggest that aging alters cardiac DGC structure and function.

Support By Migrants To Their Elderly Parents In Rural Cambodia And Thailand: A Comparative Study, Zachary Zimmer, Kim Korinek, John Knodel, Napaporn Chayovan
Support By Migrants To Their Elderly Parents In Rural Cambodia And Thailand: A Comparative Study, Zachary Zimmer, Kim Korinek, John Knodel, Napaporn Chayovan
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Internal migration in Southeast Asia raises questions about strains upon traditional systems of support for older adults. While remittances to parents’ households play a role in rural household economies, uncertainty remains regarding whether and under what circumstances children interact with their elderly parents. This paper focuses on the adult children of older persons living in rural Cambodia and Thailand and examines the determinants of personal visits, monetary remittances, and more general forms of household support. Analyses consider ways in which geographically distant children support parents, the extent to which characteristics of parents, children, and households enhance or detract from these …

Measuring Service Effectiveness For Families, Monit Cheung, Needha Mcneil Boutte-Queen
Measuring Service Effectiveness For Families, Monit Cheung, Needha Mcneil Boutte-Queen
Journal of Family Strengths
While most professionals do not dispute the fact that evaluation is necessary to determine whether agencies and practitioners are truly providing services that meet clients’ needs, information regarding consistent measures on service effectiveness in human service organizations is sparse. A national survey of 250 not-for-profit family service organizations in the United States (52.8% return rate) yielded results relevant to client identified needs and agency effectiveness measures in serving today’s families. On an open-ended survey item, 52.3% agencies indicated that poverty represented the most pressing problem among today’s families because other psychological needs also take priority. Over two thirds of these …

Attitudes And Expectations Of Technologies To Manage Wandering Behavior In Persons With Dementia, William D. Kearns, Deborah Rosenberg, Lisa West, Shawn Applegarth
Attitudes And Expectations Of Technologies To Manage Wandering Behavior In Persons With Dementia, William D. Kearns, Deborah Rosenberg, Lisa West, Shawn Applegarth
Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Faculty Publications
Purpose Wandering is aimless or repetitive locomotion that may expose persons with dementia to falls, injuries, elopement, and untimely death. Using data from focus groups, this study obtained opinions on the potential effectiveness of existing technologies for managing wandering in persons with dementia living in the community, and on the elements that such technologies should possess from the user’s perspective. Design & Methods Cross-disciplinary, consensus-based analysis was applied to data from 6 focus groups consisting of 7 elderly nursing home residents, 7 caregivers of persons with dementia, 9 home healthcare staff, 7 long term care staff, 7 medical surgical staff …

Conducting Cross-Cultural Research In Teams And The Search For The “Culture-Proof” Variable, Patricia Draper
Conducting Cross-Cultural Research In Teams And The Search For The “Culture-Proof” Variable, Patricia Draper
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Objective: Cross-cultural research must always deal with the problem that meaning systems and behaviors cannot be readily compared from one culture to the next because the sociocultural context can vary so widely.
Design: The organizers of Project AGE: Age, Generation, and Experience, a multicultural study of aging, recognized this problem and devised instruments for studying age that allowed for cultural variation as well as comparability at higher levels of abstraction. The principal investigators of Project AGE and the individual researchers made every effort to gain an emic understanding (understanding based on categories recognized by the local respondents) of people’s attitudes …

Population Inference With Mortality And Attrition In Longitudinal Studies On Aging: A Two-Stage Multiple Imputation Method, Ofer Harel, Scott M. Hofer, Lesa Hoffman, Nancy L. Pedersen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
First paragraph:
Although there are numerous challenges for the investigation of aging-related changes in older adults, statistical analysis with incomplete data and the conceptualization of population processes related to mortality is one of the most difficult. Selective attrition and mortality selection within longitudinal studies on aging are intrinsically related to many aging-related changes and must be carefully considered in the analysis and interpretation of results (e.g., Baltes, 1968; Hofer & Sliwinski, 2006; Schaie, Labouvie, & Barrett, 1973). A key distinction is made between attrition (i.e., selective dropout) and mortality selection (i.e., selective survival) in that attrition affects characteristics of the …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Prayer And Subjective Well-Being, Brandon L. Whittington
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Prayer And Subjective Well-Being, Brandon L. Whittington
Masters Theses
The present study examined the relationship between types of prayer (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication, reception, and obligation) and self-esteem, life satisfaction, and life meaning, while testing optimism, belief in prayer, and spiritual support as mediators. Linear regression analyses were conducted to examine relationships. Optimism was confirmed as a mediator between adoration and life satisfaction, thanksgiving and life satisfaction, and thanksgiving and self-esteem. Spiritual support was confirmed as a mediator between reception and life meaning. As hypothesized, optimism played a large role in predicting well-being, especially in adoration and thanksgiving, prayer focused on positive themes. Overall, prayer was shown to predict …
