The Anchor, Volume 121.02: September 12, 2007, Hope College

The Anchor: 2007

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Historical Roots Of Migration In The Age Of Globalization, Cynthia Radding Sep 2007

Historical Roots Of Migration In The Age Of Globalization, Cynthia Radding

Faculty and Staff Publications

Migratory streams to and from Latin America have created human ebbs and flows over a century-and-a-half, since the borderlands were divided by the bi-national boundary between Mexico and the U.S. In truth, what we know as the borderlands, an extended region of changing ecological, cultural and political dimensions, running from the Californias to the Caribbean basin, has articulated the movements of diverse peoples through deserts, mountains and wetlands since long before the nation-state defined North American geography. The present paper outlines the historical context for migratory flows to and from the U.S. and Latin America, through the portal of Mexico, …

“I’M Not Sam!”: Dialect, Phonetic Transcription, And Language Change In The Novels Of Kingsley Amis, Mary K. Bolin Sep 2007

“I’M Not Sam!”: Dialect, Phonetic Transcription, And Language Change In The Novels Of Kingsley Amis, Mary K. Bolin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The British novelist Kingsley Amis was interested in language and usage, often using linguistic habits or features to make a point (usually a negative one) about a character. His book, The King’s English: a Guide to Modern Usage, is an updating of H.W. Fowler’s Modern English Usage and an homage to Fowler as well. It addresses vocabulary, pronunciation, style, variation, and change, and many of its entries could be illustrated by a quote from one of Amis’s novels. This paper looks at examples of regional and social dialects in Amis's novels and discusses the author's approach to phonetic transcription and …

Regional Variability In Use Of A Novel Assessment Of Thoracolumbar Spine Fractures: United States Versus International Surgeons., John Ratliff, Neel Anand, Alexander R Vaccaro, Moe R Lim, Joon Y Lee, Paul Arnold, James Harrop, Raja Rampersaud, Christopher M Bono, Ralf H Gahr Sep 2007

Regional Variability In Use Of A Novel Assessment Of Thoracolumbar Spine Fractures: United States Versus International Surgeons., John Ratliff, Neel Anand, Alexander R Vaccaro, Moe R Lim, Joon Y Lee, Paul Arnold, James Harrop, Raja Rampersaud, Christopher M Bono, Ralf H Gahr

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Considerable variability exists in clinical approaches to thoracolumbar fractures. Controversy in evaluation and nomenclature contribute to this confusion, with significant differences found between physicians, between different specialties, and in different geographic regions. A new classification system for thoracolumbar injuries, the Thoracolumbar Injury Severity Score (TLISS), was recently described by Vaccaro. No assessment of regional differences has been described. We report regional variability in use of the TLISS system between United States and non-US surgeons.

METHODS: Twenty-eight spine surgeons (8 neurosurgeons and 20 orthopedic surgeons) reviewed 56 clinical thoracolumbar injury case histories, which included pertinent imaging studies. Cases were classified …

Exhuming Norwegian Ultrahigh-Pressure Rocks: Overprinting Extensional Structures And The Roleof The Nordfjord-Sogn Detachment Zone, Scott M. Johnston, Bradley R. Hacker, Torgeir B. Andersen Sep 2007

Exhuming Norwegian Ultrahigh-Pressure Rocks: Overprinting Extensional Structures And The Roleof The Nordfjord-Sogn Detachment Zone, Scott M. Johnston, Bradley R. Hacker, Torgeir B. Andersen

Physics

The Nordfjord-Sogn Detachment Zone (NSDZ) is widely cited as one of the primary structures responsible for the exhumation of Norwegian (ultra)high-pressure (UHP) rocks. Here we review data from the considerable volume of research describing this shear zone, and compile a strike-parallel cross section along the NSDZ from the Solund Basin in the south to the Sørøyane UHP domain in the north. This cross section highlights several previously unrecognized patterns, revealing a shear zone with top-to-the-west asymmetric fabrics that (1) initiated at amphibolite facies, (2) overprints metamorphic breaks and tectonostratigraphic contacts, and (3) has a gradational continuum of muscovite cooling ages. …

The Space Between : Transracial Adoptee's Racial Identity And The Role Parents Play In Identity Development, Kristen Denise Mccully Sep 2007

The Space Between : Transracial Adoptee's Racial Identity And The Role Parents Play In Identity Development, Kristen Denise Mccully

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study explored how transracial adoptees perceive their racial identity and the role that parents play in identity development. In particular, people who participated in this study were asked to reflect on the messages they received about their racial/ethnic identity and how racism may have played into these messages. Interviews were conducted with 12 transracial adoptees who were over the age of 18 at the time of the study. Participants were asked questions about the diversity of the neighborhoods in which they grew up; how their parents recognized their race/ethnicity; how their parents contributed to their racial identity development; how …

Factors Affecting Help-Seeking Behaviors For Mental Health Services Among Filipino Americans, Melissa Dimalanta Camorongan Sep 2007

Factors Affecting Help-Seeking Behaviors For Mental Health Services Among Filipino Americans, Melissa Dimalanta Camorongan

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explored help-seeking behaviors for mental health services among Filipino Americans. Filipinos are the second largest Asian American population in the United States and have been identified as one of the high-risk Asian American groups for mental disorders. Yet as a population they remain understudied and underserved. Existing studies are quantitative and have been conducted on college age students that are transitioning to adulthood. We know little about the help-seeking behavior for mental health services among Filipino Americans in adulthood and in their own voice. This study involved face-to-face interviews with a sample of 12 persons of Filipino …

"This Is Not Dixie:" The Imagined South, The Kansas Free State Narrative, And The Rhetoric Of Racist Violence, Brent M. S. Campney Sep 2007

"This Is Not Dixie:" The Imagined South, The Kansas Free State Narrative, And The Rhetoric Of Racist Violence, Brent M. S. Campney

History Faculty Publications

This essay explores how white Kansans employed images of the "South" and its association with racist violence in constituting the identity of Kansas as the "Free State" from 1865 until 1914. It argues that prevailing assumptions about the South offered a sectional imaginary through which white Kansans interpreted the racist violence in their own midst. On the one hand, the South, and the violence that occurred there, provided a means to obscure, dismiss, and justify incidents in Kansas, allowing commentators to cultivate a sort of historical amnesia, to deem each subsequent episode an anomaly, the exception that proved the rule …

The Story Of San Antonio Independent School Dist. V. Rodriguez: School Finance, Local Control, And Constitutional Limits, Michael Heise Sep 2007

The Story Of San Antonio Independent School Dist. V. Rodriguez: School Finance, Local Control, And Constitutional Limits, Michael Heise

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Part of the Education Law Stories, this book chapter tells the story behind San Antonio Independent School Dist. v. Rodriguez. Mindful of the challenges incident to the federal courts' effort to dismantle de jure and de facto school segregation, the Rodriguez decision evidences reluctance by some of the Justices to become ensnarled in an effort to dismantle school finance systems in way that would affect an overwhelming majority of the nation's public schools. By side-stepping such a confrontation, Rodriguez implicitly reveals important aspects about the federal courts and, in particular, how the Justices view their role in our federal system …

Supply Chain Excellence Is All About Providing, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

In a globalised economy, businesses are employing innovative methods to create value in the supply chain process. Operations, information and technology professor Hau L. Lee of Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business recently delivered a keynote address on “Creating Value with Supply Chain Excellence” at the Singapore Management University. Lee talked to Knowledge@SMU about how supply chain innovations could be developed and realised, using a framework he designed on Value-Creation Evolutions.
