A Feminist Human Rights Law Approach For Engendering The Millennium Development Goals, Christina T. Holder Jan 2007

A Feminist Human Rights Law Approach For Engendering The Millennium Development Goals, Christina T. Holder

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note critiques the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for adopting a technocratic, economic-focused approach to poverty reduction, which neglects the equitable distribution of development benefits and the structural causes of poverty. It advocates for a feminist human rights law approach that integrates Third World Feminism and human rights frameworks to create a more inclusive and rights-based strategy for achieving the MDGs, particularly in empowering women and addressing gender inequalities.

Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica is widely disseminated in North America and the boreal and temperate regions of the Eurasian continent. Comparative genomic analyses identified a 1.59-kb genomic deletion specific to F. tularensis subsp. holarctica isolates from Spain and France. Phylogenetic analysis of strains carrying this deletion by multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis showed that the strains comprise a highly related set of genotypes, implying that these strains were recently introduced or recently emerged by clonal expansion in France and the Iberian Peninsula.

Communication Channels, Spatial Stereotyping, And Urban Conflict: A Cross-Scale And Spatio-Temporal Perspective, Sorin A. Matei, Sandra Ball-Rokeach, Stefan Ungurean

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Our research addresses how individuals exposed to various types of communication situations-from face-to-face to Internet environments-are more or less likely to react to urban locations with fear or to find them desirable. The present article summarizes what we have learned from a number of research projects about the effects of communication practices on spatial and ethnic stereotyping in conditions of violent urban conflict and will offer a number of recommendations for mitigating the negative effects of these processes.

Spectral Analysis Of Coastal Vegetation And Land Cover Using Aisa+ Hyperspectral Data, R. Jensen, P. Mausel, N. Dias, R. Gonser, C. Yang, J. Everitt, R. Fletcher

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

This paper describes a spectral analysis of several coastal land cover types in
South Padre Island, Texas using AISA+ hyperspectral remote sensing data.
AISA+ hyperspectral data (1.5 metre) were acquired throughout the area on 9
March 2005. Data over mangrove areas were converted to percent reflectance
using four 8 ×8 metre reflectance tarps (4%, 16%, 32% and 48%) and empirical
line calibration. These data were then compared to percent reflectance values of
other terrestrial features to determine the ability of AISA+ data to distinguish
features in coastal environments. Results suggest that these data may be
appropriate to …

The Fragility Of The Affordable Care Act's Universal Coverage Strategy, Elizabeth Weeks Leonard Jan 2007

The Fragility Of The Affordable Care Act's Universal Coverage Strategy, Elizabeth Weeks Leonard

Scholarly Works

This paper was presented at DePaul University in March 2006, as part of a Symposium on Shaping a New Direction for Law and Medicine: An International Debate on Culture, Disaster, Biotechnology & Public Health. Following the catastrophic events of 2005, including Hurricane Katrina, Pakistani Earthquakes, bird flu transmission to human populations, and the real threat of bioterrorism, government struggled in the aftermath to make sense of the devastation and human displacement. Medical teams, try as they might, are not always prepared and alerted as to how best investigate and quickly render assistance. The Symposium addressed the role of government, policy-makers, …

Theses

The present study aims to quantifying and assessing the orgasmic and

Inorganic pollutants extents along eastern side of the United Arab

Emirates UAE offshore on the Gulf of Oman, which consist of Fujairah,

Khor Fakkan and Kalba. Rapid development and the highly usage of the

coastal region for industrial activities, sewage disposal and marine

transportation has led to obvious changes in sediments quality of the

marine environment. Twelve coastal sampling stations were selected to

cover the maximum area of the eastern side, three sampling stations were

selected from marine sediments and six sampling collected from spilled

oil near investigated area. …

Back To The Future: Is Form-Based Code An Efficacious Tool For Shaping Modern Civic Life, Lolita Buckner Inniss Jan 2007

Back To The Future: Is Form-Based Code An Efficacious Tool For Shaping Modern Civic Life, Lolita Buckner Inniss

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This Essay serves as a critique of the New Urbanism in general and of form-based code in particular as a tool of the New Urbanism. It may be true that form-based code offers more flexibility than traditional zoning schemes and thus may offer some respite from acknowledged ills such as social and racial divisions created by exclusionary zoning and other tools, and from the relative inutility of single or limited use districts. However, I will argue that these benefits are eclipsed by some of the problems of form-based code. Form-based code is frequently hailed as a back to the future …

Sustaining The Household In A Globalizing World: The Gendered Dynamics Of Business Travel In Singapore Households, Shirlena Huang, Brenda S. A. Yeoh, Paulin Tay Straughan Jan 2007

Sustaining The Household In A Globalizing World: The Gendered Dynamics Of Business Travel In Singapore Households, Shirlena Huang, Brenda S. A. Yeoh, Paulin Tay Straughan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article draws upon a large-scale survey as well as focus group discussions to examine how Singapore households grapple with the demands of participating in globalized work. It highlights the household as a site of analysis, where individuals engage with contemporary trends of globalisation in their daily lives. Specifically, this article examines the case of Singapore households where one or both spouses engage in business travel. The study (a) emphasises the need to focus on processes that bring about shorter-term transnational variations to a household's daily geographies and how household members negotiate these disruptions; and (b) demonstrates that the transnationalizing …

The Promises And Prospects Of Geography In Higher Education, Lily Kong Jan 2007

The Promises And Prospects Of Geography In Higher Education, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The idea for this JGHE symposium came to me as I reflected on the spatial turn in the humanities and social sciences, and felt encouraged by the growing influence of geography in the intellectual spaces of other disciplines. Amidst positive thoughts, I wondered if the institutional position of the discipline had strengthened with its recently enhanced intellectual position, and what the geography of geography's institutional presence and strength was. For sure, anecdotal stories circulate regarding the opening or closure of a geography department, a renaming, a split and so forth…. A symposium of papers from different parts of the world …

Crime And Race Representation: A Content Analysis Of Las Vegas Local Television News, Julie Arradaza Chapman Jan 2007

Crime And Race Representation: A Content Analysis Of Las Vegas Local Television News, Julie Arradaza Chapman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Media studies have found Blacks more often linked with media reports of violent crime in their local communities compared to other races. The aim of this paper is to reveal if current trends in the Las Vegas media market overrepresent African Americans as the most active perpetrators of crime by examining crime statistics, race demographics, and television representations of crime and race in the local news. This study is a content analysis of the five major television network affiliates: KVBC, KVVU, KLAS, KTNV, and KINC. Seven hypotheses are tested. Results indicate that local television viewers in Las Vegas receive inaccurate …

Reinventing Downtown San Diego: A Spatial And Cultural Analysis Of The Gaslamp Quarter And Horton Plaza, Jordan Chase Ervin Jan 2007

Reinventing Downtown San Diego: A Spatial And Cultural Analysis Of The Gaslamp Quarter And Horton Plaza, Jordan Chase Ervin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research project explores issues of historic preservation, gentrification, and the contention over public space and culture. More specifically, it analyzes these elements within the setting of the historic Gaslamp Quarter and Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego. By tracing their development and conception from the early 1970s into the twenty-first century, this research reveals the different types of images and cultures that city leaders and developers created within the built environment. More importantly, the project sheds light upon how different social groups understood, experienced, and responded to the transformation of these spaces. This type of analysis is crucial for …

Identification And Interpretation Of Botanical Remains From Neolithic 'Ais Yiorkis, Cyprus, Leilani Espinda Jan 2007

Identification And Interpretation Of Botanical Remains From Neolithic 'Ais Yiorkis, Cyprus, Leilani Espinda

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The botanical remains from the 2005 field season at 'Ais Yiorkis , Cyprus demonstrates a distinct economic assemblage that has yet to be identified in the Aceramic Neolithic of Cyprus. In addition to the unusually high proportions of two-grained einkorn and the low ratios of other plant parts, 'Ais Yiorkis is characterized by an atypical architectural phenomenon in the form of raised circular platform structures. Furthermore, the archeology is marked by a distinct lithic and groundstone tool industry as well as a massive faunal assemblage, which includes the presence of cattle, previously rare in the Neolithic. Together with the archaeology …

An Evaluation Of X-Ray Fluorescence Lead Detection Methods For Candy Wrappers, Louis J Abacherli Jan 2007

An Evaluation Of X-Ray Fluorescence Lead Detection Methods For Candy Wrappers, Louis J Abacherli

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Currently, it is expensive and time consuming for public health entities to test candy (and other consumer products) that has entered the consumer market in the United States. The XRF, on the other hand, provides a quick, economical, and easy method to test lead levels. It has been demonstrated in a variety of studies that x-ray fluorescence (XRF) can be used for testing lead levels in paint, soil, and testing in-vivo for bone. What has not been studied is the XRF's ability to test for lead in certain consumer items such as candy. This research was designed to identify XRF …

Incorporating Spatial Characteristics In Travel Demand Models, Valerian Kwigizile Jan 2007

Incorporating Spatial Characteristics In Travel Demand Models, Valerian Kwigizile

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The goal of this study was to address one of the major weaknesses of the ubiquitous four-step procedure for travel demand modeling: omission of spatial interactions between the variables. While contiguity of the analysis zones is commonly used to define spatial interaction of the variables in spatial analysis, it might not capture the interactions of travel demand variables. In this study, the efficacies of four alternative methods for defining spatial relationships: contiguity, separation, a combination of contiguity and separation, and economic linkages (accessibility), were evaluated. The home-based-work (HBW) spatial models and non-spatial models for trip attraction, and trip production were …

Presidential Transitions During Capital Campaigns: Perspectives Of Chief Development Officers, Kimberly Kay Nehls Jan 2007

Presidential Transitions During Capital Campaigns: Perspectives Of Chief Development Officers, Kimberly Kay Nehls

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the past few decades, capital campaigns at institutions of higher education have increased in duration, while collegiate presidential tenures have been doing just the opposite. Turnover in the top post was frequent, even during major fundraising campaigns. Prior to this study, presidential transitions during campaigns had not been previously analyzed. Therefore, the objective of this exploratory study was to better understand presidential transitions during capital campaigns from the perspective of the chief development officer (CDO) who maintained continuity. Nine CDOs who experienced presidential transitions during campaigns were interviewed to better understand their experience. The institutions represented were Florida State …

Second-Home Owner Attachment To A Destination: A Driver Of Tourism Promotion, John Brumby Mcleod Jan 2007

Second-Home Owner Attachment To A Destination: A Driver Of Tourism Promotion, John Brumby Mcleod

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Second-homes have become common place in many destinations. The visitation to these homes has become known as second-home tourism. Previous literature suggests that these homeowners might possess traits that would be attractive to tourism planners such as repeat visitation, word-of-mouth promotion, and the hosting of other visitors; The purpose of this study was to explore the presence of these traits in the context of international second-home owners and test a theoretical model that proposes place attachment as a driver of these behaviors. Attachment has been shown as a predictor of visitation and positive word-of-mouth in previous research. Borrowing from the …

"Perpetual Movement, And A Border Of Mystery": The Transatlantic Imagined Community And Henry James' "The Golden Bowl", Nancy Cunard And "Negro: An Anthology", And Jean Rhys' "Wide Sargasso Sea", Oliver Quimby Melton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Many modernist writers attempted to transcend nationality but are ultimately unable to do so because of an unyielding fact of post-eighteenth century existence; namely, that a person possesses a nationality is an unavoidable, requisite donnee of modern life. This dissertation argues that this paradox was effectively resolved in the Atlantic world, an especially active locus of modernist meta-nationality, where a dialogic, unfinalizable transatlantic "nation" or, using Benedict Anderson's term, "imagined community" formed. This study examines three particular writers and works that frame and contribute to the development of this imagined community. First, I argue that the ideal "Anglo-Saxon total" Henry …

Development And Testing Of An Advanced Photovoltaic Receiver, Marc A Newmarker Jan 2007

Development And Testing Of An Advanced Photovoltaic Receiver, Marc A Newmarker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In August of 2004, the SAIC solar concentrator located at UNLV was retrofitted with a 24 module photovoltaic aperture in hopes of producing a new type of solar electric concentrator. Alter the initial solar testing began, it became very apparent that the receiver design did not supply adequate cooling of the silicone cells, leading to module deformation and eventual failure. Through investigative studies of the failure and the possible solutions to the problem put forth at NREL and UNLV, a second phase array of mechanically sealed photovoltaic modules was constructed and tested. With a new methodology implemented in phase two, …

A Failed Experiment In Imperial Governance: The Central African Federation (1953--1963), Blake Sherer Jan 2007

A Failed Experiment In Imperial Governance: The Central African Federation (1953--1963), Blake Sherer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This work foremost attempts to understand why federation failed in British Central Africa. Federations had been implemented throughout the British Empire to great success, for nearly a century. As such, this project frames the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland within the larger relationship of Great Britain and its overseas holdings. Of particular interest is the assignment of power to the colonies and the metropole in determining the institution's structure and collapse; This project will argue that contrary to previous histories on the Federation, institutional failures were not the root causes of disintegration. Larger ideological forces were at play on the …
