Sex-Biased Parasitism And The Reproductive Costs Of Parasites In A Social African Ground Squirrel, Melissa Ann Hillegass Jan 2007

Sex-Biased Parasitism And The Reproductive Costs Of Parasites In A Social African Ground Squirrel, Melissa Ann Hillegass

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vertebrate males frequently carry higher numbers of parasites than females. This bias in parasite loads could be a consequence of sexual selection. Grouping species are also assumed to be afflicted with larger numbers of parasites than solitary animals and associated costs of this parasitism could vary with group size or structure. I examined sex-biased parasitism and the influence of group size on parasite loads in Cape ground squirrels (Xerus inauris), a highly social species that occurs in the arid regions of southern Africa. Males carried three times as many ectoparasites as females, but females harbored nearly three times more endoparasites …

The Public Spectacle Of Italian Masculinity: Nonverbal Display Of Gender Identity, Gino Perrotte Jan 2007

The Public Spectacle Of Italian Masculinity: Nonverbal Display Of Gender Identity, Gino Perrotte

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Italian masculine identity is examined by looking at the following influences: history and structure of Italian society, the public places used for the performance and the culture surrounding the display of masculinity. This research uses an approach similar to an ethnography of communication. Initial data and ideas were gathered through observational fieldwork and interviews that took take place in Italy during July 2006 and July 2007. A methods section describes interviews that later took place with Americans in order to compare and contrast responses with ones previously collected from Italians. The data gathered from these interviews will be used to …

Journey To The Scars: A White Trash Epic, J. Patrick Rader Jan 2007

Journey To The Scars: A White Trash Epic, J. Patrick Rader

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inspired by the work of writers Hunter S. Thompson and Tom Wolfe and motivated by celebrity prevaricator James Frey, Journey to the Scars: A White Trash Epic is a memoir that attempts to redefine the genre by applying the ideals and themes of gonzo and new journalism. The opening chapter, "The Diary of John Doe Frankenstein" tells the story of a pivotal event in the author's life. Immediately following this narrative of a near fatal motorcycle accident, the author/narrator's reliability is called into question and the remainder of the memoir is the story of the author's efforts to uncover the …

The Effect Of Technology Acceptance On Undergraduate Students' Usage Of Webct As A Collaborative Tool, Huei-Hsuan Yang Jan 2007

The Effect Of Technology Acceptance On Undergraduate Students' Usage Of Webct As A Collaborative Tool, Huei-Hsuan Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research study was to use the Technology Acceptance Model (Pan, 2003) for re-examination of the relationships between students' attitude toward the use of WebCT and the relevance of the actual usage in light of social presence and sociability. By using Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) developed by F. Davis (1989), this study focused on variables such as perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, computer self-efficacy, subjective norms, attitude and actual use of WebCT to account for the effect towards the achievement in the exam which is an outcome variable. The data were collected over three different time …

'Time In A Bottle': Temporal Discontinuities In Narratives Of Diaspora, Emily Churilla Jan 2007

'Time In A Bottle': Temporal Discontinuities In Narratives Of Diaspora, Emily Churilla

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

The concepts of home have been, and continue to be, the foundation of much of the contention surrounding all sides of discourse regarding diaspora and immigration - through both viewing the home as threatened and defiled as well as redefining the imagined reality of home. It is the impasse of working around and against the frame of Western temporality and space from within the trope of home that this paper will explore; specifically how narratives of diasporic subjectivity disrupt and threaten normalized constructs of origin and time, history, and identity. Because to only consider the question of "home" leaves a …

In Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School Dist. No. 1, the Supreme Court declared that it will continue to scrutinize race-conscious educational decisions to insure that they are narrowly-tailored to serve a compelling governmental interest. This Article develops a strategy for enhancing racial diversity at all levels of American public education that can survive that rigorous constitutional scrutiny. The Article shows that school districts may prove that assigning a meaningful number of racially diverse students to their secondary schools is narrowly-tailored to achieve their compelling educational interest in teaching racial literacy. The constitutionality of this race-conscious educational strategy …

The Influences Of Sufism And Kejawen In Indonesian Political Discourse, Brett J. Mccabe Jan 2007

The Influences Of Sufism And Kejawen In Indonesian Political Discourse, Brett J. Mccabe

Honors Capstones

In current affairs a central issue in the media is Islamic fundamentalism. Various reactions to American foreign policy have divided the globe into a dichotomy supporting or rejecting terrorism. While Middle Eastern countries have received significant attention, other Islamic countries have been largely ignored. Indonesia can be a primary xample for an analysis of how Islam exists outside of the Middle East. The purpose of this research is to consider the initial development of political Islam in Indonesia. This development will consider the level of influence Islam had during the drafting of the Indonesian constitution. Also, this research will show …

Colonial Constructs And Legally Sanctioned Sexually Violent Consequences In R V. Edmondson, Nicholas Bonokoski Jan 2007

Colonial Constructs And Legally Sanctioned Sexually Violent Consequences In R V. Edmondson, Nicholas Bonokoski

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

What kind of a system or process would portray a twelve-year-old girl from the Yellow Quill First Nation as a sexual threat to three twenty-something white men, who promising her a ride home, picked her up and got her drunk? The answer: The Canadian legal system. In R v Edmondson a twelve-year old Aboriginal girl, who was sexually assaulted by Dean Edmondson, Jeffrey Brown, and Jeffrey Kindrat from Tisdale Saskatchewan, was portrayed by the judge as a "sexual aggressor". This paper focuses on the trial of Dean Edmondson in which, according to Judge Kovatch, the girls "sexual aggression" led to …

Punking Yoga: Reconstructing Post/Neo/Colonial Fashion And Movement, Tara Brabazon Jan 2007

Punking Yoga: Reconstructing Post/Neo/Colonial Fashion And Movement, Tara Brabazon

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

The branded clothes worn through sporting and fitness activities confirm that any movement, practice or behaviour that seems transgressive of heteronormative masculinity and femininity is also implicated in neo/colonial incorporations and the casualized workforce that is a characteristic of sports clothing manufacture. In an environment washed by the marketing of opposition, resistance is both difficult to define and apply in cultural studies. This paper invokes 'the problem' of resistance while denying the seamless and simple determinations of positive and negative representations. The focus of study is Yogurt Activewear, a company attacking corporatized yoga wear by creating an anti-brand brand. They …

Defining A Civil War Battlefield: Recent Archaeological Investigations At The Pickett's Mill State Historic Site, Paulding County, Georgia., Terry G. Powis, Jason Whatley, Mary T. Lumsden, Joseph Powell, Patrick Severts, Ron Hobgood, James Page

Faculty Articles

Recent investigations at the Pickett's Mill State Historic Site have yielded new insights into the Civil War battle that occurred in May 1864. Military and historical sources have documented that the major battle took place in a ravine, but that skirmishes also occurred in adjacent areas, including a large, open wheat field. Some reports have suggested that Confederate soldiers had forced Union troops out of the ravine into this field where they became exposed. In the summer of 2006 a variety of different archaeological techniques were employed to determine what role the wheat field played in the battle. This paper …

A Matter Of Marching, A Matter Of Supply: Politics And Logistics In Arkansas, 1863-1864, Alfred Hoyt Wallace

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

In the spring of 1864, Major General Frederick Steele led his men out of Little Rock on orders to cooperate with Major General Nathaniel Banks's campaign up the Red River. The two forces never met as planned. Steele eventually captured Camden, Arkansas, but was obliged to retreat in the face of a determined Confederate force approaching him. The Camden Expedition, as this became known, has typically been cast as an expedition that failed due to a severe shortage of available food along the line of march. Upon closer investigation, however, particularly in the records of common soldiers, a different explanation …
