Women's Place: Urban Planning, Housing Design, And Work-Family Balance, Katharine B. Silbaugh Jan 2007

Women's Place: Urban Planning, Housing Design, And Work-Family Balance, Katharine B. Silbaugh

Fordham Law Review

In the past decade a substantial literature has emerged analyzing the role of work-family conflict in hampering women's economic, social, and civil equality. Many of the issues we routinely discuss as work-family balance problems have distinct spatial dimensions. “Place” is by no means the main factor in work-family balance difficulties, but amongst work-family policy makers it is perhaps the least appreciated. This Article examines the role of urban planning and housing design in frustrating the effective balance of work and family responsibilities. Nothing in the literature on work-family balance reform addresses this aspect of the problem. That literature focuses instead …

A Model For Humane Economic Development: Hernando De Soto, Property Rights, And The Preferential Option For The Poor, Robert Van Der Waag Jan 2007

A Model For Humane Economic Development: Hernando De Soto, Property Rights, And The Preferential Option For The Poor, Robert Van Der Waag

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A Model for Humane Economic Development: Hernando de Soto, Property Rights, and the Preferential Option for the Poor provides a constructive dialogue between the works of the Peruvian economist Hernando de Soto, President of the Institute for Liberty and Democracy, and Catholic social teaching in order to assist people in less developed nations (LDCs) to escape the cycle of poverty. The dissertation argues that Hernando de Soto's insights to protect property rights, in conjunction with the Catholic Church's theological commitment to promote human dignity and human rights, through a preferential option for the poor, offers practical resources for sound economic …

An Exploration Of American Social Justice Activists: Developmental Experiences Of White Undergraduate And Post-College Millennials Who Are Activists For Africa, Caryn P. Grimstead

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore experiences that undergraduate students and recent graduates who are White social justice activists for Africa perceive as contributing to their development as activists committed to addressing humanitarian crises in Africa and how they interpret these experiences. In-depth interviews were conducted with six undergraduate students, or recent graduates, who considered themselves social justice activists for Africa and who identified with White culture more strongly than any other ethnic culture. These participants ranged from ages 21 to 25 and were found to share demographic similarities such as intact families of origin and middle …

Removing Long-Term Errors From The Avhrr–Based Brightness Temperature (Bt), Md Zahidur Rahman, Leonid Roytman, Felix Kogan Jan 2007

Removing Long-Term Errors From The Avhrr–Based Brightness Temperature (Bt), Md Zahidur Rahman, Leonid Roytman, Felix Kogan

Publications and Research

Empirical distribution functions were applied for removing long-term errors from BT data derived from AVHRR sensor on NOAA environmental satellites. This paper investigates BT stability in the NOAA/NESDIS Global Vegetation Index (GVI) data set during 1982-2003. This period includes five NOAA satellites. Degradation of BT over time for each satellite was estimated for geographical location in China. The method of matching empirical distribution function (EDF) improves the time relative stability of BT data for all satellites, especially NOAA-9, -11 and -14.

Impediments To Financial Development In The Banking Sector: A Comparison Of The Impact Of Federalism In The United States And Germany, Khalil Nicholas Maalouf Jan 2007

Impediments To Financial Development In The Banking Sector: A Comparison Of The Impact Of Federalism In The United States And Germany, Khalil Nicholas Maalouf

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Note examines how differences in U.S. and German variants of federalism have contributed to the formation and development of the dual banking system in the United States and the three-pillar banking system in Germany. Specifically, this Note considers the manner in which federalism has informed the respective banking systems' reactions to dynamic changes in the global banking industry and analyzes the role federalism has played in contributing to or impeding reform efforts in the United States and Germany.

Using Simulation To Evaluate Global Software Development Task Allocation Strategies, Siri-On Setamanit, Wayne Wakeland, David Raffo Jan 2007

Using Simulation To Evaluate Global Software Development Task Allocation Strategies, Siri-On Setamanit, Wayne Wakeland, David Raffo

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

We describe a hybrid computer simulation model of the software development process that is specifically architected to study alternative ways to configure global software development (GSD) projects, including phase-based, module-based, and follow-the-sun allocation strategies. The model is a hybrid system dynamics and discrete-event model. In this paper, test cases have been developed for each allocation strategy, and project duration is computed for each configuration under a range of plausible assumptions for key parameters. The primary finding is that although under ideal assumptions follow-the-sun is able to produce impressive reductions in time-to-market, under more realistic assumptions the reverse is true, thus …

The Status Of Childhood Lead Poisoning And Prevention In Nevada, Usa, Anne Rothweiler, Elena E. Cabb, Shawn Gerstenberger Jan 2007

The Status Of Childhood Lead Poisoning And Prevention In Nevada, Usa, Anne Rothweiler, Elena E. Cabb, Shawn Gerstenberger

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

One of the first steps in addressing the problem of childhood lead poisoning is to identify the possible sources of exposure in specific communities and target high-risk populations with appropriate interventions. Due to several factors, such as lack of funding and lack of blood lead reporting, little information exists regarding the occurrence of childhood lead poisoning and the prevalence of potential exposure sources in the state of Nevada. Following the recent establishment of a Nevada-based Lead Poisoning Program, we compiled the most current information available on Nevadans, and use this knowledge to suggest future research objectives and outreach activities for …

Spatial Aspects Of Infant Mortality And Informal Workers: The Case Of Ceara State -Brazil, Ricardo Soares Jan 2007

Spatial Aspects Of Infant Mortality And Informal Workers: The Case Of Ceara State -Brazil, Ricardo Soares

Doctoral Dissertations

High levels of infant mortality and high participation of informal workers in the labor market are living conditions faced by many developing countries. In Ceara State - Brazil, their trends during the last three decades have followed opposite directions. Whereas infant mortality has decreased substantially since the 1980s, suggesting that the country is on the right path to development, the labor market has presented increasing levels of informality, which challenges traditional theories of development. The essays of this thesis aim to investigate some aspects of these two phenomena. In particular, the first essay offers an approach to analyze if the …

Dirty Whites And Dark Secrets: Sex And Race In "Peyton Place", Sally Hirsh-Dickinson Jan 2007

Dirty Whites And Dark Secrets: Sex And Race In "Peyton Place", Sally Hirsh-Dickinson

Doctoral Dissertations

"Dirty Whites and Dark Secrets: Sex and Race in Peyton Place " suggests that Grace Metalious's 1956 potboiler Peyton Place contains a critique of race which may have been just as unsettling to a mid-century readership as the novel's famed critique of sexuality. Peyton Place is most often said to be "about" sex. In this study, I argue that it is also "about" race, and that it is the racing of the sex that may have provoked the scandalized outcry against the novel. My work posits that Peyton Place's controversial reputation resulted from Metalious's racialized representations of sexuality and the …

Contagious Efficiency: The Growing Reliance On U.S.-Style Antitrust Settlements In Eu Law, George S. Georgiev Jan 2007

Contagious Efficiency: The Growing Reliance On U.S.-Style Antitrust Settlements In Eu Law, George S. Georgiev

Articles

This Article analyzes the impact of the introduction of U.S.-style antitrust settlement procedures in EU law, which occurred in 2004 as part of an ambitious antitrust modernisation program. After documenting the lack of a settlement tradition in the EU legal system or the legal systems of EU member states, I argue that the new procedures were transplanted from U.S. law and that this was done without sufficient tailoring. Relying on lessons from the longstanding U.S. experience with antitrust settlements and on emerging evidence about the EU's own approach since 2004, I analyze the effects from the introduction of settlements at …

The George Eliot Centenary Of 1919, Margaret Harris Jan 2007

The George Eliot Centenary Of 1919, Margaret Harris

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

The centenary of George Eliot's birth in 1919 was recognized as an opportunity to commemorate her connection with the parts of Warwickshire where she was born and spent her early life. While her association with Coventry and Nuneaton had been noted during her lifetime and in obituaries, and emphasized again when George Eliot's Life as related in her letters and journals, arranged and edited by her husband J. W. Cross was published in 1885, there were some inhibitions about too enthusiastically claiming an agnostic libertine as a local celebrity. Both Nuneaton and Coventry chose to celebrate the centenary, and reconstruction …

Integrating An Honors Minor, Education Major And Global Teacher Preparation, David M. Bishop, Kelli Sittason Jan 2007

Integrating An Honors Minor, Education Major And Global Teacher Preparation, David M. Bishop, Kelli Sittason

Honors in Practice Online Archive

In the pages that follow we will describe an exciting collaboration between our university’s College of Education and Honors Program. In the twenty-two-year history of the Honors Program at Northern Kentucky University (NKU), we have averaged only one education major per year completing an Honors Capstone Project. This statistic stands in stark contrast to the fact that Education regularly has the third or fourth highest number of pre-majors beginning an honors minor. Some efforts have been made in recent years to mesh requirements for the two programs and to improve student advising. However, the number of honors minor/education major students …
