Servant-Leadership Context: A Multi-Case Pilot Study, Mark A. Rennaker, Daniel A. Novak Jan 2007

Servant-Leadership Context: A Multi-Case Pilot Study, Mark A. Rennaker, Daniel A. Novak

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In the 1970s, Greenleaf (1977) observed, "A new moral principle is emerging which holds that the only authority deserving one's allegiance is that which is freely and knowingly granted by the led to the leader in response to, and in proportion to, the clearly evident servant stature of the leader" (p. 10). Greenleaf stated, "The great leader is seen as servant first, and that simple fact is the key to his [sic] greatness" (p. 7). Consequently, Spears (1996) credited Greenleaf with originating the term "servant-leadership." Similarly, Russell (2001) stated, Greenleaf "inspired the servant leadership concept among modern organizational theorists" (p. …

The California Supreme Court's Decision In Barrett V. Rosenthal: How The Court's Decision Could Further Hamper Efforts To Restrict Defamation On The Internet, Joshua Azriel

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

In November 2006, the California Supreme Court ruled in Barrett v. Rosenthal that Internet "users" are immune from liability when they post or forward online information that is defamatory. The court cited section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency (CDA) Act as precedent for its decision. The law grants immunity to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and other "users" for any offensive material posted on their online interactive computer services. This article analyzes the Barrett ruling and argues that it leaves three questions unanswered: (1) How does the CDA apply to conspiracies between two users of the Internet where one is …

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

Like the business cycle, the reputations of great actors in history seem to go through alternating periods of boom and bust. Harry Truman was scorned in his day as an incompetent bumbler. A half-century later, he is regarded as a gutsy and principled president. Andrew Jackson was hailed as the champion of the common man and the enemy of power-mad bankers. Since the 1970s, he has become the champion only of the White man, a rancid hater of Indians, and a leering political monstrosity. John Quincy Adams was, for more than a century after his death, dismissed as a dyspeptic …

Soils: A Contemporary Perspective, Cheryl Palm, Pedro Sanchez, Sonya Ahamed, Alex Awiti Jan 2007

Soils: A Contemporary Perspective, Cheryl Palm, Pedro Sanchez, Sonya Ahamed, Alex Awiti

East Africa Institute

Soils are viewed in the context of ecosystem services, soil processes and properties, and key attributes and constraints. The framework used is based on the premise that the natural capital of soils that underlies ecosystem services is primarily determined by three core soil properties: texture, mineralogy, and soil organic matter. Up-to-date descriptions and geographical distribution of soil orders as well as soil attributes and constraints are given, along with the relationships between soil orders, properties, and biomes. We then relate ecosystem services to specific soil processes, soil properties, and soil constraints and attributes. Soil degradation at present is not adequately …

A New Model Of Administrative Enforcement, Robert J. Jackson Jr., David Rosenberg Jan 2007

A New Model Of Administrative Enforcement, Robert J. Jackson Jr., David Rosenberg

Faculty Articles

This Essay proposes a new method of monitoring regulatory compliance by a firm that operates multiple sources of risk, such as air polluting smokestacks. The expense of individually monitoring such sources may consume a large share of the agency’s enforcement budget, undermining deterrence objectives. Under our approach, regulators would instead randomly select one of the firm’s sources of risk, determine the firm’s liability at that source, and apply that outcome perforce as determinative of liability at all of the sources. This method, which we call single-outcome sampling (“SOS”), replicates or improves deterrence generated by the current source-by-source enforcement model, but …

Mapping Comparative Judicial Review, Miguel Schor Jan 2007

Mapping Comparative Judicial Review, Miguel Schor

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This Article explores the questions scholars ask about comparative constitutional judicial review and critically assesses the answers they provide. Scholars ask three, interrelated questions: (i) why has judicial review (almost) conquered democracy, (ii) whether empowering courts to construe constitutions has a democratic pay-off, and (iii) how best to make sense of the variation that judicial review exhibits around the world. The Article makes two principal conclusions. First, our scholarly maps of judicial review have for too long viewed the world through the prism of the exceptional American Supreme Court. Our understanding of judicial review would be improved if our maps …

Leadership, Communication And Religiosity In Higher Education Administration: Distinctions That Make A Difference, G. L. Forward, Kathleen Czech, Patrick Allen

Faculty Publications - College of Education

This project investigated the communicative and religious components of transformational leadership and job satisfaction in the context of higher education. Specifically, 224 CAO members of the Council of Independent Colleges completed a survey assessing their own leadership style, communication behavior, and religiosity. A stepwise multiple regression procedure revealed seven significant predictors of transformational leadership. The most important variables included attentiveness, openness, role negotiation, and intrinsic religious orientation. Additionally, a t-test compared a subset of CAOs from institutions affiliated with the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities with CAOs in non-affiliated institutions. Results revealed statistically significant differences in attentiveness, information support, …

Shock-Tube Investigation Of Ignition Delay Times Of Blends Of Methane And Ethane With Oxygen, Brian Christopher Walker Jan 2007

Shock-Tube Investigation Of Ignition Delay Times Of Blends Of Methane And Ethane With Oxygen, Brian Christopher Walker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The combustion behavior of methane and ethane is important to the study of natural gas and other alternative fuels that are comprised primarily of these two basic hydrocarbons. Understanding the transition from methane-dominated ignition kinetics to ethane-dominated kinetics for increasing levels of ethane is also of fundamental interest toward the understanding of hydrocarbon chemical kinetics. Much research has been conducted on the two fuels individually, but experimental data of the combustion of blends of methane and ethane is limited to ratios that recreate typical natural gas compositions (up to ~20% ethane molar concentration). The goal of this study was to …

A Cultural Contingency Leadership Model For A Multinational Higher Education Joint Venture, Frankie Albritton Jan 2007

A Cultural Contingency Leadership Model For A Multinational Higher Education Joint Venture, Frankie Albritton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addressed the need for empirical research on the leadership of multinational virtual teams (Davis & Bryant, 2003; Early & Gibson, 2002; Ilgen, Lepine, and Hollenbeck, 1997; Prieto & Arias, 1997), particularly in the field of educational leadership (Cheng, 1995). This was accomplished through the development of a model based upon the cultural values discovered through the use of Hofstede's (1980, 2001) Values Survey Module 94 (VSM 94). As workers will bring values from their own cultures to the multinational workplace (Bochner & Hesketh, 1994), research was conducted to determine the cultural values of economics professors in the United …
