Forecasting In Rapidly Changing Environments: An Application To The Us Motion Picture Industry, Anirban Mukherjee, Kadiyali Vrinda Oct 2007

Forecasting In Rapidly Changing Environments: An Application To The Us Motion Picture Industry, Anirban Mukherjee, Kadiyali Vrinda

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Markets with rapidly changing environments provide forecasting challenges because of fewer similarities between past and future outcomes. In this paper, we provide a methodology that enables forecasting with relatively short histories. The application is to the U.S. motion picture industry where we forecast revenues in theatrical, sales (DVD and VHS), and rental channels. Using short market histories of similar products, we account for (1) observed and unobserved movie-specific characteristics, (2) seasonality of demand, (3) competition within and across multiple distribution channels (4) market expansion, substitution and complementarity between movies inside and across distribution channels. We extend the multiplicative competitive interaction …

European Venture Capital Market: Scaling Beyond Current Boundaries, Gerard George, Eva Nathusius Oct 2007

European Venture Capital Market: Scaling Beyond Current Boundaries, Gerard George, Eva Nathusius

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study systematically documents the perceptions of LPs, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs and their views of the trends and challenges facing the European venture capital market. The interest from LPs in European venture capital funds was found to be neutral to marginally negative because of historical returns. However, buoyancy in the supply of high quality opportunities at reasonable valuations has the potential to improve this outlook. The findings suggest that European venture capitalists still face structural barriers in the form of heterogeneous consumer preferences, improving but weak exit and fundraising environments, and the scarcity of LPs of significant size. The …

Enhanced Shrinkage Of Lanthanum Strontium Manganite (La0.90sr0.10mno3+Δ) Resulting From Thermal And Oxygen Partial Pressure Cycling, Benjamin P. Mccarthy, Larry R. Pederson, Harlan U. Anderson, Xiao Dong Zhou, Prabhakar Singh, Gregory W. Coffey, Edwin C. Thomsen

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Exposure of (La0.90Sr0.10)0.98MnO3+δ (LSM-10) to repeated oxygen partial pressure cycles (air/10 ppm O2) resulted in enhanced densification rates, similar to behavior shown previously due to thermal cycling. Shrinkage rates in the temperature range 700°-1000°C were orders of magnitude higher than Makipirtti-Meng model estimations based on stepwise isothermal dilatometry results at a high temperature. a maximum in enhanced shrinkage due to oxygen partial pressure cycling occurred at 900°C. Shrinkage was the greatest when LSM-10 bars that were first equilibrated in air were exposed to gas flows of lower oxygen fugacity than in …

Low Interest Rates And High Asset Prices: An Interpretation In Terms Of Changing Popular Models, Robert J. Shiller Oct 2007

Low Interest Rates And High Asset Prices: An Interpretation In Terms Of Changing Popular Models, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

There has been a widespread perception in the past few years that long-term asset prices are generally high because monetary authorities have effectively kept long-term interest rates, which the market uses to discount cash flows, low. This perception is not accurate. Long-term interest rates have not been especially low. What has changed to produce high asset prices appears instead to be changes in popular economic models that people actually rely on when valuing assets. The public has mostly forgotten the concept of “real interest rate.” Money illusion appears to be an important factor to consider.

Process Purity And Innovation In Dispute Resolution: A Response To Professors Stempel, Cole, And Drahozal, Richard C. Reuben Oct 2007

Process Purity And Innovation In Dispute Resolution: A Response To Professors Stempel, Cole, And Drahozal, Richard C. Reuben

Faculty Publications

This article uses a "process characteristics and values" approach to make the case against displacing arbitration finality with substantive judicial review. It responds to a trio of articles in a forthcoming Nevada Law Review symposium on whether and how the Federal Arbitration Act should be amended. In one article, Nevada Law Professor Jeffrey Stempel contends all arbitration awards should be subject to substantive judicial review similar to that of public trial courts. In a second article, Ohio State Professor Sarah Cole argues that substantive review should generally be permitted when the parties agree to it by contract, an issue now …

Use Versus Abuse: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Nonbinding Reservation Agreements And Real Estate Developers' Ability To Freely Rescind, Douglas J. Short Oct 2007

Use Versus Abuse: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Nonbinding Reservation Agreements And Real Estate Developers' Ability To Freely Rescind, Douglas J. Short

Campbell Law Review

This Comment addresses this increasingly common scenario where the developer reneges on reservation agreements and asserts that if certain developer practices remain unchanged, unwary developers will continue to face lawsuits brought by disappointed parties. Although the courts have generally been unsympathetic to contract claims, clearly struggling to find a remedy for plaintiffs in light of the express, nonbinding nature of the agreements, the potential for developer liability nevertheless exists under a theory of unfair and deceptive trade practices. Thus, this Comment asserts that since reservation agreements do not rise to the legal classification of option contracts, developers are justified in …

Equal Access To Public Education: An Examination Of The State Constitutional And Statutory Rights Of Nonpublic Students To Participate In Public School Programs On A Part-Time Basis In North Carolina And Across The Nation, John Plecnik Oct 2007

Equal Access To Public Education: An Examination Of The State Constitutional And Statutory Rights Of Nonpublic Students To Participate In Public School Programs On A Part-Time Basis In North Carolina And Across The Nation, John Plecnik

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This article argues that private and homeschool students in North Carolina have a state constitutional and statutory right to participate in public school programs on a part-time basis. This right is based on the North Carolina Constitution's explicit acknowledgment of nonpublic education and guarantees of equal protection and equal access to public schools. This right is also based on state statutes that mirror the wording and spirit of the state constitution's guarantees. Since the North Carolina Supreme Court has held that equal access to public schools is a fundamental right under the state constitution, this right can only be restricted …

Automated Refactoring Of Legacy Java Software To Enumerated Types, Raffi Khatchadourian, Jason Sawin, Atanas Rountev Oct 2007

Automated Refactoring Of Legacy Java Software To Enumerated Types, Raffi Khatchadourian, Jason Sawin, Atanas Rountev

Publications and Research

Modern Java languages introduce several new features that offer significant improvements over older Java technology. In this article we consider the new enum construct, which provides language support for enumerated types. Prior to recent Java languages, programmers needed to employ various patterns (e.g., the weak enum pattern) to compensate for the absence of enumerated types in Java. Unfortunately, these compensation patterns lack several highly-desirable properties of the enum construct, most notably, type safety. We present a novel fully-automated approach for transforming legacy Java code to use the new enumeration construct. This semantics-preserving approach increases type safety, produces code that is …

The Impact Of U.S. National And State Level Policy On The Nature And Scope Of K-12 Virtual Schooling, Anna Lukemeyer, Kent J. Crippen, Leanna Archambeault

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

During the past five years, virtual schools in the United States have gained popularity and acceptance as viable alternatives to the traditional school system through provisions for charter schools under Title V, Part B, Subpart 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. This paper describes the existing federal policies that are driving the online virtual school movement, and how one state, Nevada, has set forth and interpreted specific policies regarding online distance education. In addition, this paper identifies the beliefs acting as the driving forces …

A Critical Reflection Model To Teach Diversity And Social Justice, Ilene L. Ingram, Toni S. Walters

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

In the United States today, the fastest growing populations of public school students are collectively African American and Hispanic American, and the students who immigrate to the United States from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and the Caribbean nations. And, at the same time, demographics are changing in our classrooms, the majority of teachers and administrators in the U. S. are White, live in the mainstream culture, and have limited cross-cultural experiences with groups other than their own. Teachers and administrators play key roles in ensuring students’ success. There is a far greater need today for teachers and …

The Awareness Of Cultural Orientations In Culturally Responsive Education For Korean American Students, Mi-Soon Lee Oct 2007

The Awareness Of Cultural Orientations In Culturally Responsive Education For Korean American Students, Mi-Soon Lee

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

It is important for teachers to be aware of the cultural backgrounds of students and their family in order to provide culturally responsive instruction and counseling. Most teachers may identify Asian ethnicities due to their distinguishable physical or behavioral characteristics but they may not know how Asian Americans have changed their cultural value and legacies. To examine cultural orientation, the Korean American Acculturation Scale (KAAS), which consists of behavior and cultural value orientations, was administered to 466 Korean American students. The result indicated that the most recent generations were less behaviorally oriented to Korean culture and more disoriented to Korean …

Perceptions Of Age Discrimination, Organizational Justice, And Employee Attitudes On Intentions To Leave In The Engineering Industry, Courtney L. Bibby Oct 2007

Perceptions Of Age Discrimination, Organizational Justice, And Employee Attitudes On Intentions To Leave In The Engineering Industry, Courtney L. Bibby

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (2006) reported that the annual turnover rate for employees of U.S. firms rose to 41% in 2005. Employee intentions to leave among young adults are a concern in many industries where the demand for skilled employees begins to exceed the supply. This is especially true in the engineering industry, because talented and knowledgeable employees are difficult to replace.

Employee turnover represents a practical dilemma for many businesses due to the loss of qualified personnel and additional recruitment and training costs. Although little is known about employee turnover intention within the engineering …
