Today's mobile student population follows diverse paths. This research presents findings from a qualitative study investigating the perceptions of transfer students while they were actively engaged in the transfer process. Fifty-seven incoming community college transfer students (n=57) were interviewed, in a large metropolitan area, through e-journaling during fall 2006 (while students were still attending community colleges) and during spring 2007 (students' first semester of admission to the university).

The following research questions guided the study: What do transfer students perceive as a successful transfer process? From the transfer student's perspective, what supports are needed to accommodate a successful transfer process? …

An Exploration Of Three Residence Hall Types And The Academic And Social Integration Of First Year Students, Dorothy E. Paine Jan 2007

An Exploration Of Three Residence Hall Types And The Academic And Social Integration Of First Year Students, Dorothy E. Paine

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Living on campus has long been an important part of many students' collegiate experience. Most research describing the benefits of living on campus was conducted in the 1960s and 1970s and was based upon students living in double rooms on double loaded corridors with community bathrooms. In recent years, the style of residence hall buildings has changed from these traditional rooms to suite and apartment-style housing offering more privacy and greater amenities to students. This study sought to examine how first year students living in three different types of residence hall environments differ on measures of social and academic integration, …

The Role Of Norepinephrine In Learning: Cerebellar Motor Learning In Rats, Daniel A. Paredes Jan 2007

The Role Of Norepinephrine In Learning: Cerebellar Motor Learning In Rats, Daniel A. Paredes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Delay classical eyeblink conditioning is an important model of associative, cerebellar dependent learning. Norepinephrine (NE) plays a significant modulatory role in the acquisition of learning; other neurotransmitter systems are also at play. The goal of this dissertation was to determine whether NE, GABA and glutamate (Glu) release is observed in cerebellar cortex during delay eye blink conditioning, and whether such release was selectively associated with training and not due only to stimulatory sensory input. The data support the hypothesis of noradrenergic and GABAergic system involvement in motor learning with NE as a modulator of early responding and GABA as a …

Two Essays On Market Efficiency ⎯ Tests Of Idiosyncratic Risk: Informed Trading Versus Noise And Arbitrage Risk, And Agency Costs And The Underlying Causes Of Mispricing: Information Asymmetry Versus Conflict Of Interests, Jung Chul Park Jan 2007

Two Essays On Market Efficiency ⎯ Tests Of Idiosyncratic Risk: Informed Trading Versus Noise And Arbitrage Risk, And Agency Costs And The Underlying Causes Of Mispricing: Information Asymmetry Versus Conflict Of Interests, Jung Chul Park

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

I examine the informational efficiency of stock markets by testing the relation between idiosyncratic volatility and equity mispricing. I find that the level of mispricing declines with idiosyncratic volatility consistent with the notion that greater levels of firm-specific risk reflect greater participation of informed traders in the market for the stock. However, I also find that mispricing increases with idiosyncratic volatility for highly volatile stocks, and this is attributed to both noise trading and arbitrage risk. In addition, I investigate the link between agency costs and equity mispricing, and whether it exists due to information asymmetry or the degree of …

Akt Function And Human Oncogenesis, Sungman Park Jan 2007

Akt Function And Human Oncogenesis, Sungman Park

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Accumulated evidence indicates that, by the phosphorylation of its physiological substrates, Akt promotes cell survival, proliferation and angiogenesis. While a number of Akt targets have been identified, the mechanism by which Akt regulates cell survival and growth and induces malignant transformation still remains elusive. During the last 5 years, I have shown that AKT1 cross-talks with Src/Stat3 pathway. AKT1 is a direct target gene of Stat3. Protein/mRNA levels and promoter activity of AKT1 are significantly induced by constitutively active Src and Stat3. Knockdown of Stat3 or dominant-negative Stat3 reduced AKT1 expression induced by constitutively active Src. Blockage of AKT1 expression …

Just Regular Folks: An Ethnographic Study Of Identity In A Gay And Lesbian Catholic Community In South Florida, Shawn M. Perkins

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Much of the research done on religious gays and lesbians has focused upon the cognitive strategies they employ in order to negotiate conflicts experienced between their religious and sexual identities. In contrast to taking a psychological approach, this study focuses upon the role of social context in helping gay and lesbian Catholics to successfully negotiate their religious and sexual identities. Using participant-observation data of a small gay and lesbian Catholic community, the Holy Cross Community (HCC), as well as from interviews with ten of its members, I examine the role of the interpersonal context in identity processes. I outline the …

Destabilization And Characterization Of Libh4/Mgh2 Complex Hydride For Hydrogen Storage, Luis A. Rivera Jan 2007

Destabilization And Characterization Of Libh4/Mgh2 Complex Hydride For Hydrogen Storage, Luis A. Rivera

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The demands on Hydrogen fuel based technologies is ever increasing for substitution or replacing fossil fuel due to superior energy sustainability, national security and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, the polymer based proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), is strongly considered for on-board hydrogen storage vehicles due to low temperature operation, efficiency and low environmental impact. However, the realization of PEMFC vehicles must overcome the portable hydrogen storage barrier. DOE and FreedomCAR technical hydrogen storage targets for the case of solid state hydrides are: (1) volumetric hydrogen density > 0.045 kgH2/L, (2) gravimetric hydrogen density > 6.0 wt%, (3) operating temperature < 150 degrees C, (4) lifetimes of 1000 cycles, and (5) a fast rate of H2 absorption and desorption. To meet these targets, we have focused on lithium borohydride systems; an alkali metal complex hydride with a high theoretical hydrogen capacity of 18 wt.%.

It …

Bcl-2 Related Ovarian Killer, Bok, Is Cell Cycle Regulated And Sensitizes To Stress-Induced Apoptosis, José M. Rodríguez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Bok/Mtd (Bcl-2-related ovarian killer/Matador) is considered a pro-apoptotic member of the Bcl-2 family. Though identified in 1997, little is known about its biological role. We have previously demonstrated that Bok mRNA is upregulated following E2F1 over-expression. In the current work, we demonstrate that Bok RNA is low in quiescent cells and rises upon serum stimulation. To determine the mechanism underlying this regulation, we cloned and characterized the mouse Bok promoter. We find that the mouse promoter contains a conserved E2F binding site (-43 to -49) and that a Bok promoter-driven luciferase reporter is activated by serum stimulation dependent on this …

An Experimental Study Of Pro-Dieting And Anti-Dieting Psychoeducational Messages: Effects On Immediate And Short-Term Psychological Functioning And Weight Control Practices In College Women, Megan Roehrig

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While dieting is relatively normative in our society, it is controversial within the fields of eating disorders and obesity. Dieting for weight loss has been touted by the obesity prevention field as a solution to the growing obesity epidemic, yet a body of research in the eating disorders field has also implicated it in the etiology and maintenance of eating pathology. Thus, a divergence in approaches toward dieting has emerged, with both prodieting and anti-dieting messages being recommended. Little is known, however, about the impact of these two types of messages on immediate and short-term psychological functioning and weight control …

Major Tea Catechin Inhibits Dendritic Cell Maturation In Response To Microbial Stimulation, James L. Rogers

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Dendritic cells (DCs) are a migratory group of bone-marrow-derived leukocytes specialized for uptake, transport, processing and presentation of antigens to T cells. Exposure of DCs to bacterial pathogens can induce DC maturation characterized by cytokine production, up-regulation of co-stimulatory molecules and an increased ability to activate T cells. DCs have the ability to restrict growth of L. pneumophila (Lp), an intracellular Gram-negative bacillus that causes a severe form of pneumonia known as Legionnaires' disease, in murine ER-derived organelles (121) but replicate in human DCs (145). Even in human cells, however, lysis of the DCs does not occur for at least …

The Assimilation Of The Marvelous Other: Reading Christoph Weiditz’S Trachtenbuch (1529) As An Ethnographic Document, Andrea Mckenzie Satterfield Jan 2007

The Assimilation Of The Marvelous Other: Reading Christoph Weiditz’S Trachtenbuch (1529) As An Ethnographic Document, Andrea Mckenzie Satterfield

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the watercolor drawings of indigenous Americans in the Trachtenbuch, a small sixteenth-century manuscript by Christoph Weiditz. The manuscript was titled as a trachtenbuch by the Germanisches National Museum Library when cataloged in 1868, and Theodor Hampe published the first facsimile under this title in 1927. As this title suggests, the manuscript has long been narrowly defined and examined by scholars as a costume book. I argue instead for broadening the reading of the Trachtenbuch from a costume book, a subset of ethnographic documents that identify individuals based solely on systems of dress, to a visual ethnographic collection, …
