Intracellular Lipids In Bos Indicus And Box Taurus Oocytes, Casey Bryant Ballard Jan 2007

Intracellular Lipids In Bos Indicus And Box Taurus Oocytes, Casey Bryant Ballard

LSU Master's Theses

It has been proposed that Bos indicus when compared with Bos taurus embryos are more sensitive to cryopreservation procedures due to higher intracellular lipid content of the embryos. With cyropreservation of Bos indicus embryos increasing for export, it is essential to improve the viability of these cryopreserved embryos. In Experiment I, M-II oocytes from mice, pigs and cows were subjected to two different procedures to evaluate lipid content. The lipid content present in pig oocytes was significantly (P<0.05) higher when compared with mouse and cow oocytes. Pig oocytes had a lower settling point in the sucrose buoyant density gradient and higher Nile Red units, which indicated higher lipids present in the oocytes. In Experiment II, it was determined that M-II oocytes aspirated from superstimulated Brahman donors were significantly higher (P<0.05) in lipid content compared with English breed donors. The lipid content present in Brahman oocytes was higher when compared with English breeds when tested with a sucrose buoyant density gradient and Nile Red staining. In addition, donor females with higher body condition scores were significantly (P<0.05) higher in oocyte lipid content when compared with donor females of lower body condition scores. Furthermore, animal body condition scores, cholesterol and triglyceride levels prior to oocyte aspiration may be indicators of intracellular lipids in the oocytes and embryos. To our knowledge, this is the first report that evaluated intracellular lipid content of M-II oocytes of different beef breed types using a sucrose buoyant density gradient and Nile Red staining.

Hallowed Halls: Abandoned Schools Of Louisiana, Lauren Q. Greathouse Jan 2007

Hallowed Halls: Abandoned Schools Of Louisiana, Lauren Q. Greathouse

LSU Master's Theses

"Hallowed Halls: Abandoned Schools of Louisiana" is an exploration of the remnants found in vacant educational institutions around the state. With the use of color and black and white images, I deal with my own memories of grade school by recreating the vibrancy and color I remember with the poignancy of those things and places that remain. These objects and spaces speak of an interaction with society and emit a history of the complex relationship between people, and the places and things that were once a part of their lives. The images are meant to suggest a contrast between what …

The Genealogy Of Morals: Contemporary Empirical Accounts, Franklin Donald Worrell Jan 2007

The Genealogy Of Morals: Contemporary Empirical Accounts, Franklin Donald Worrell

LSU Master's Theses

In the late twentieth century, moral realists began to resurrect a type of argument that emerged during the Enlightenment. These realists appealed to moral progress as evidence for moral facts, and their arguments took the form of inferences to the best explanation. Recently, the argument style has emerged again. This time, the inference to the best explanation is being used by empirically-informed sentimentalists to argue that their theories can provide accounts of moral evolution that have greater explanatory and predictive power than the accounts offered by the moral realists. This thesis examines the arguments to the best explanation of such …

Identification Of Molecular Markers And Association Mapping Of Selected Loci Associated With Agronomic Traits In Rice, Suresh Babu Kadaru Jan 2007

Identification Of Molecular Markers And Association Mapping Of Selected Loci Associated With Agronomic Traits In Rice, Suresh Babu Kadaru

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Discriminate Analysis as a procedure was evaluated to select molecular markers associated with complex traits in US rice germplasm. Markers for percent head rice, percent total rice, and grain yield were identified with high levels of correct classification that mapped within or near traditional Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL). Mixed model-regression procedure to identify molecular markers that predict phenotypic variance associated with four agronomic traits was created and validated in two distinct rice inbred populations. Main and epistatic effects were identified by standard hypothesis testing and Bayesian information criteria in a multivariate format. The new procedure increased power and enhanced prediction …

Parenting Experiences Of Eastern European Immigrant Professionals In The U.S.: A Qualitative Study, Olena Nesteruk Jan 2007

Parenting Experiences Of Eastern European Immigrant Professionals In The U.S.: A Qualitative Study, Olena Nesteruk

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In 2004, the nation’s foreign-born population numbered approximately 35 million comprising about 12% of the total U.S. population (U.S. Census Bureau, 2005). Most studies of immigrants primarily research the two largest immigrant groups, those from Latin America and Asia, while little has been done with the less visible population of immigrants from Eastern Europe. Also, we know much about the experiences of low-income immigrants of color, but little about the experiences of white immigrant families in the professional ranks. A qualitative study was conducted with immigrant professionals from Eastern Europe to explore their experiences with raising children in a new …

Displacement And The Text: Exploring Otherness In Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea, Maryse Condé'S La Migration Des Coeurs, Rosario Ferré'S The House On The Lagoon, And Tina De Rosa's Paper Fish, Melody Boyd Carriere Jan 2007

Displacement And The Text: Exploring Otherness In Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea, Maryse Condé'S La Migration Des Coeurs, Rosario Ferré'S The House On The Lagoon, And Tina De Rosa's Paper Fish, Melody Boyd Carriere

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of how some displaced Caribbean and Italian American women examine identity within a literary tradition that considers them "Other." I have chosen four culturally diverse novels to explore, each one written by a different female author: Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea, Maryse Condé's La migration des cœurs, Rosario Ferré's The House on the Lagoon, and Tina De Rosa's Paper Fish. I identify the causes of the protagonists' displacement, and analyze the actions they take to make themselves heard in a tradition that has formerly silenced them. The role of the mother is especially important in …

Georges De La Tour's Flea-Catcher And The Iconography Of The Flea-Hunt In Seventeenth-Century Baroque Art, Crissy Bergeron Jan 2007

Georges De La Tour's Flea-Catcher And The Iconography Of The Flea-Hunt In Seventeenth-Century Baroque Art, Crissy Bergeron

LSU Master's Theses

This essay performs a comprehensive investigation of the thematic possibilities for Georges de La Tour's Flea-Catcher (1630s-1640s) based on related artworks, religion, and emblematic, literary, and pseudo-scientific texts that may have had a bearing on it. The results of my research are grouped into two categories that embrace the range of interpretations for the work: religion and sexuality. While religious iconography characterizes most of La Tour's extant creations, the hypothetically religious content of his Flea-Catcher is difficult to discern. However, it is possible to analyze the iconography, as well as some of the ancillary motifs found in La Tour's painting, …

Knowledge-Based Methods For Automatic Extraction Of Domain-Specific Ontologies, Janardhana R. Punuru Jan 2007

Knowledge-Based Methods For Automatic Extraction Of Domain-Specific Ontologies, Janardhana R. Punuru

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Semantic web technology aims at developing methodologies for representing large amount of knowledge in web accessible form. The semantics of knowledge should be easy to interpret and understand by computer programs, so that sharing and utilizing knowledge across the Web would be possible. Domain specific ontologies form the basis for knowledge representation in the semantic web. Research on automated development of ontologies from texts has become increasingly important because manual construction of ontologies is labor intensive and costly, and, at the same time, large amount of texts for individual domains is already available in electronic form. However, automatic extraction of …

An Analysis Of The Processor Preferences For The Adoption Of Potential Crawfish Peeling Machines, Darius J. Lewis Jan 2007

An Analysis Of The Processor Preferences For The Adoption Of Potential Crawfish Peeling Machines, Darius J. Lewis

LSU Master's Theses

Over the past decade, the peeling segment of the Louisiana crawfish industry has faced the challenge of remaining competitive in an increasingly global market. Since the mid-1990’s, there has been escalated discussion among Louisiana crawfish processors on the need for a crawfish peeling machine. The International Trade Commission determined that the U.S. crawfish industry had been “materially injured” by the imported tailmeat and ruled China was, in fact, dumping crawfish in the U.S. by selling below fair market value in the host country. The development of a suitable crawfish peeling machine could potentially increase production and lower cost of production, …

An Exploration Of The Impact Of Picture Book Illustrations On The Comprehension Skills And Vocabulary Development Of Emergent Readers, Judy Lavender Nicholas Jan 2007

An Exploration Of The Impact Of Picture Book Illustrations On The Comprehension Skills And Vocabulary Development Of Emergent Readers, Judy Lavender Nicholas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The formal instruction process of teaching reading to emergent and beginning readers needs to incorporate a much more multimodal approach. People today, not only in America but in many other countries as well, are more graphically oriented than any other generation has ever been. Children in our society expect to experience pictures and images in almost everything they encounter. This graphic orientation needs to be taken advantage of and incorporated into the educational process in ways that can be beneficial to the learning environments of children in our schools. Reading programs need to forego one-dimensional teaching methods and learn how …

An Investigation Of Maternal Psychopathology As A Moderator Of Child Response Following Hurricane Katrina, Ann Wingate Spell Jan 2007

An Investigation Of Maternal Psychopathology As A Moderator Of Child Response Following Hurricane Katrina, Ann Wingate Spell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Previous disaster research has focused on possible risk factors that contribute to child psychological distress following disaster exposure. One of these factors, parental psychopathology, has consistently been indicated as associated with and predictive of child functioning post-disaster. In related areas of violence exposure, researchers have gone beyond correlation and prediction in their attempt to elucidate the relationship between parental psychopathology and child functioning post-trauma. Such researchers have investigated and confirmed parental psychopathology as a moderator variable in the relationship between child violence exposure and child functioning. Thus, in considering the status of research regarding risk factors of child functioning post-disaster …

Narratives In Music: Schelmo, Hebraic Rhapsody For Cello And Orchestra, Asu Perihan Karadut Jan 2007

Narratives In Music: Schelmo, Hebraic Rhapsody For Cello And Orchestra, Asu Perihan Karadut

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Born in July 1880, in Geneva, Switzerland, Ernest Bloch became one of the leading composers of the 20th century. He wrote series of works, which he called “The Jewish Cycle.” They represented a new, distinctive musical language, in which Bloch combined eastern and western music traits. Schelomo, Hebraic Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra (1915-16) was the last composition from the cycle. It showed mastery of a style Bloch had been developing since his earlier compositions. This project will show Schelomo’s place in “The Jewish Cycle” and its importance on Bloch’s departure from the popular trends of the early 20th century. …

Local Norms And Innovations Within The System Of Locative Prepositions In Cajun French, Sibylle Maria Noetzel Jan 2007

Local Norms And Innovations Within The System Of Locative Prepositions In Cajun French, Sibylle Maria Noetzel

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cajun French presents variable use of linguistic features, as any other variety of French does. Many Cajun French features are considered as deviant from the French norm or triggered by attrition although fluent speakers of Cajun French have always used them. In this sociolinguistic study, we analyze the use of locative prepositions. We add two important dimensions to existing studies: real-time evidence for a diachronic descriptive perspective, and a methodological tool, measuring the degree of exposure to French (MDI). This approach allows us to establish the local prepositional norm of Cajun French and phenomena due to attrition. Large amounts of …

Epistemological Congruency In Community College Classrooms: Effects Of Epistemological Beliefs On Students Experiences, Cheryl Fruge Jan 2007

Epistemological Congruency In Community College Classrooms: Effects Of Epistemological Beliefs On Students Experiences, Cheryl Fruge

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed method study was to explore epistemological beliefs of students as well as those of their instructors to determine how epistemological congruence or incongruence shapes students’ experiences. The term, “epistemological congruency” is introduced to conceptualize the similarities or differences between students’ and teachers’ epistemological beliefs. Further, the study considers how students’ grades, integration into the academic community, and intentions to persist are related to epistemological congruency between teacher and student. Students and faculty at a community college in the Southeastern United States participated in the study. The theoretical framework for this study is based on Tinto’s …

An Original Composition, Diamundo, And A Historical Survey Of Music Spatialization, Amaro Borges Moreira Filho Jan 2007

An Original Composition, Diamundo, And A Historical Survey Of Music Spatialization, Amaro Borges Moreira Filho

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is divided in two parts. Part one is an original composition, Diamundo, for percussion, winds, strings, and loudspeakers, based on the poem of the same name by the Brazilian poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade. It is scored for a chamber orchestra with a main ensemble formed by strings, piano, percussion, and guitar, plus electroacoustic sounds, and four solo wind instruments: flute, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. The ensemble and the eight-channel loudspeakers are spatialized. The piece is divided in six movements without interruption. The first five movements are separated by 4 cadenzas for the solo instruments. Most of the …

The Effects Of Psychological Factors On Media Usage: An Examination Of Immigrants' Media Use Patterns, Motives And Acculturation In The United States, Suping Zhang Jan 2007

The Effects Of Psychological Factors On Media Usage: An Examination Of Immigrants' Media Use Patterns, Motives And Acculturation In The United States, Suping Zhang

LSU Master's Theses

Earlier studies have provided evidence for the importance of mass media in the acculturation process of immigrants. The current study intends to further investigate acculturation by exploring the influential factors in immigrants’ mass communication activities. A survey has been conducted among 208 participants from diverse ethnic backgrounds in the Baton Rouge area. Having examined the mass media and Internet consumption of the respondents, this study finds that psychological factors, not demographic backgrounds, are the primary influential variables in predicting immigrants’ media use patterns. According to this study, respondents’ stronger adaptive personality and acculturation motivation would lead to more consumption of …

Wind Loads For Petrochemical Structures, Samuel Amoroso Jan 2007

Wind Loads For Petrochemical Structures, Samuel Amoroso

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Techniques currently available to practicing engineers for estimating wind loads for petrochemical structures have little theoretical or experimental basis. This dissertation research is an effort to expand the understanding of wind effects on petrochemical and other, similar structures. Petrochemical structures introduce geometric scales into wind tunnel model simulations below what are common for enclosed structures. Wind tunnel experiments were performed to help determine whether this will introduce problems in achieving dynamic similarity between models and prototypes. The experiments did not reveal any clear indication that petrochemical structures cannot be modeled in wind tunnels at scales similar to those used for …

Culture, Self-Determination And Colonialism: Issues Around The Revitalization Of Indigenous Legal Traditions, Gordon Christie Jan 2007

Culture, Self-Determination And Colonialism: Issues Around The Revitalization Of Indigenous Legal Traditions, Gordon Christie

All Faculty Publications

This paper works from the assumption that the power of the state to determine and regulate debate around the reinvigoration of Indigenous legal traditions must be set aside, and that the path forward must be laid out by Indigenous peoples. Working out the implications of this assumption leads to ruminations on the roles that identity, colonialism, culture and self- determination must play in structuring debate around the rebuilding of these legal traditions. The position that begins to emerge from these ruminations focuses attention on the need to control processes of identity formation. Given the historical and ongoing impacts of colonial …

Anywhere But Here: Race And Empire In The Mabo Decision, Emma Cunliffe Jan 2007

Anywhere But Here: Race And Empire In The Mabo Decision, Emma Cunliffe

All Faculty Publications

The High Court of Australia's decision in Mabo v. Queensland (No.2) is among the most widely known and controversial decisions the Court has yet delivered. In Mabo, a majority of the Court recognised a common law right to native title subject to certain criteria. In this article, I explore the competing visions of legal history that are implicit within Brennan J's leading judgment and Dawson J's dissent. In particular, I discuss the ways in which both of these judgments render an incomplete and contradictory documentary record more coherent than it really is. Suggesting that neither judgment manages to escape the …

Leveraging Lean Process Improvement Methodology To Promote Economic And Environmental Sustainability: Obstacles And Opportunities, Jennifer Doman

Theses

We are on the verge of a paradigm shift in the regulatory community in the United States. The EPA is slowly moving away from command and control to a more collaborative structure, and Lean process improvement is one of the primary catalysts of change. A significant percentage of American enterprises have some experience with Lean methods, and the EPA and others believe that Lean can be leveraged to promote environmental benefits while still delivering valuable business benefits, such as increased productivity and reduced costs. This research explores both the opportunities available for businesses today, and the current obstacles encountered when …

Light Pollution: A Case For Federal Regulation, Timothy Berthaume Jan 2007

Light Pollution: A Case For Federal Regulation, Timothy Berthaume

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the body of evidence concerning light pollution and exposure to artificial light and determine if the scientific research warrants regulatory oversight in the United States. The first question that guided this effort was: Does improper artificial lighting and exposure to light-at-night constitute a risk to human health and safety? The follow up question being: Is light pollution a concern to ecological systems, and if so to what extent? A comprehensive literature review was conducted to ascertain the status of the research—if any—in these two areas and what the findings were. The overarching …
