Mapping Hiv Prevention In Poland: Contested Citizenship And The Struggles For Health After Socialism, Jill Teresa Owczarzak Jan 2007

Mapping Hiv Prevention In Poland: Contested Citizenship And The Struggles For Health After Socialism, Jill Teresa Owczarzak

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This ethnographic dissertation research project examines HIV prevention programs in Warsaw, Poland to explore the concurrent processes of democratization and privatization as Poland begins European Union accession. As inherently political public health interventions, HIV prevention programs provoke discussions of risk and responsibility, and visions of the moral social order. Therefore, they can be used to understand the ways in which politically and socially marginalized populations invoke claims to citizenship status through attention to health issues. From an epidemiological perspective, HIV/AIDS arrived in Poland relatively late (1985) and never reached the anticipated epidemic levels. In the 1980s, drawing attention to the …

The Effectiveness Of Using Communication-Centered Intervention To Facilitate Phonological Learning In Young Children, Sharon Blodgett Hart Jan 2007

The Effectiveness Of Using Communication-Centered Intervention To Facilitate Phonological Learning In Young Children, Sharon Blodgett Hart

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

A phonological disorder is a communication disorder of the speech sound system characterized by an impaired ability to use developmentally expected speech sounds and sound patterns to communicate with others (Bauman-Waengler, 2004). This impairment affects the clarity of a child's speech and how easily a child's speech can be understood. As stated in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) (American Psychiatric Association, 1994), difficulties with speech sound production may interfere with academic achievement, social communication, or future occupational achievement. Children with phonological impairments are generally viewed as being at risk for reading difficulties (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2001).Clinicians …

A Visualization Tool For Cross-Experiment Gene Expression Analysis Of C. Elegans, Lin Xue Jan 2007

A Visualization Tool For Cross-Experiment Gene Expression Analysis Of C. Elegans, Lin Xue

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Forty-six genomic gene expression studies of free living soil nematode C. eleganshave been published. To facilitate exploratory analysis of those studies, we constructed adatabase containing all the published C. elegans expression datasets. A Perl CGIprogram, called Microarray Analysis Display (MAdisplay), allows gene expressionclustergrams of any combination of entered genes and datasets to be viewed(http://elegans.uky.edu/gl/madisplay). Perl programs were used to preprocess the rawdata from different sources into a common format and to transform the data to displaythe expression changes relative to each experiment's controls. Three hundred lists ofgenes from figures and tables were extracted from the publications and made available inthe …

Semistructured Probabilistic Object Query Language (A Query Language For Semistructured Probabilistic Data), Praveen Gutti Jan 2007

Semistructured Probabilistic Object Query Language (A Query Language For Semistructured Probabilistic Data), Praveen Gutti

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This work presents SPOQL, a structured query language for Semistructured Probabilistic Object (SPO) model [4]. The original query language for semistructured probabilistic database management system [20], SP-Algebra [4], has limitations such as complex functional notation and unfamiliarity to application programmers. SPOQL alleviates these problems by providing a user friendly and familiar SQL-like declarative syntax for writing queries against SPDBMS. We show that parsing SPOQL queries is a more involving task than parsing SQL queries. We describe the evaluation algorithm for SPOQL queries that we have implemented.

Organizational Performance, Turnover, And Human Resource Management: Focusing On Municipal Police Services, Yongbeom Hur Jan 2007

Organizational Performance, Turnover, And Human Resource Management: Focusing On Municipal Police Services, Yongbeom Hur

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Regardless of whether organizations are in the private sector or in the public sector, there is a general agreement that human resources are critical to keeping organizations effective as well as maintaining a high level of organizational performance. While more serious effort has been made to empirically examine how human resources influence organizational performance (e.g., studies about turnover consequences, studies about the relationship between human resource management practices and organizational performance) in the private sector, it is rare to find similar empirical studies in the public sector partly because it is hard to define public organizational performance. In my dissertation, …

Oxidative Stress And Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Traumatic Brain Injury In Aging, Changxing Shao Jan 2007

Oxidative Stress And Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Traumatic Brain Injury In Aging, Changxing Shao

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a prominent disease in developed countries, and age is an important factor in functional outcome. Although aged patients typically show diminished recovery compared to young patients, and have higher mortality and morbidity following TBI, the mechanism is not well understood. To date, there is no effective therapeutic for TBI. Previous studies indicate a secondary injury in TBI begins immediately after impact, and is likely the major contribution to delayed neuron dysfunction and loss. Studies also suggest mitochondrial dysfunction and increased free radical species (ROS) production following TBI may play a key role in the process. …

The Boethian Vision Of Eternity In Old, Middle, And Early Modern English Translations Of De Consolatione Philosophi, Kenneth Carr Hawley Jan 2007

The Boethian Vision Of Eternity In Old, Middle, And Early Modern English Translations Of De Consolatione Philosophi, Kenneth Carr Hawley

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

While this analysis of the Old, Middle, and Early Modern English translations of De Consolatione Philosophiandamp;aelig; provides a brief reception history and an overview of the critical tradition surrounding each version, its focus is upon how these renderings present particular moments that offer the consolation of eternity, especially since such passages typify the work as a whole. For Boethius, confused and conflicting views on fame, fortune, happiness, good and evil, fate, free will, necessity, foreknowledge, and providence are only capable of clarity and resolution to the degree that one attains to knowledge of the divine mind and especially to knowledge …

Relationships Among Reading Assessments: How Do Dibels Oral Reading Fluency And Dra Scores Relate To Terranova2 Performance In Second-Grade Students?, Melissa Walker

Theses

The present study investigated the relationships between the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) Oral Reading Fluency and the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) as related to TerraNova2 Vocabulary and Comprehension scores for second grade students. Archival data gained from 60 participants during the 2004-2005 school year were utilized. The participants were from a school receiving Reading First funding in a northeastern city. Correlation and regression analyses were run on the DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency scores, DRA codes, and TN2 scores to determine the relationships among the three tests. Results found significant correlations and predictors for TN2 performance.

Publishing In Wartime: The Modern Library Series During The Second World War, Gordon B. Neavill Jan 2007

Publishing In Wartime: The Modern Library Series During The Second World War, Gordon B. Neavill

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

American book publishing during the Second World War had to cope with a huge increase in demand for books coupled with scarcity of resources, especially paper rationing imposed by the War Produc- tion Board. Based on research in the Random House archives and focusing on the Modern Library series, this article examines how publishers coped with wartime challenges and opportunities. Ran- dom House grew rapidly during the war. Sales reached the million dollar mark in 1941 and exceeded three million dollars by 1946. Many new titles were published in smaller printings than demand would have justified and were out of …

China's Network Justice, Benjamin L. Liebman, Tim Wu Jan 2007

China's Network Justice, Benjamin L. Liebman, Tim Wu

Faculty Scholarship

China's Internet revolution has set off a furious debate in the West. Optimists from Thomas Friedman to Bill Clinton have predicted the crumbling of the Chinese Party-state ("Party-state"), while pessimists suggest even greater state control. But a far less discussed and researched subject is the effect of China's Internet revolution on its domestic institutions. This Article, the product of extensive interviews across China, asks a new and different question. What has China's Internet revolution meant for its legal system? What does cheaper, if not free, speech mean for Chinese judges?

The broader goal of this Article is to better understand …

Risk And Protective Factors For Drug Use Among Polydrug-Using Urban Youth And Young Adults, Gary J. Burkholder, Jean J. Schensul, Raul Pino

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of traditional risk and protective factors for drug use on six different popular drugs on a population that is primarily Black and Latino between the ages of 16 and 24. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the relative importance of risk and protective indexes, and their interaction, in predicting drug use. Findings suggested: (a) traditional risk and protective factors, as well as situationally specific factors such as gang involvement, predicted drug use; and
(b) the relative contribution of risk and protective factors toward explained variances differs substantially among the …

Typographic Decision-Making: Children's Book Design, Christina R. Fisher Jan 2007

Typographic Decision-Making: Children's Book Design, Christina R. Fisher

Theses

Most children's first encounter with words and the act of reading is in the form of having a children's book read to them. Whether it is a cardboard book with only a sprinkling of words, an illustrated storybook with more narrative, or an independent reader with a few images and a larger concentration of words, children's books are essential to developing a child's reading ability and to fostering an enthusiasm for reading. Despite the importance of these books, their typographic design is often neglected. Little attention is paid to the integration of text and image, and typographic variables are often …

Methods of communication and dissemination of information have changed dramatically with the emergence of the Internet and mobile phones. To sustain this revolution, we need reliable mass storage devices which would store information not only in large amount in small space but also for long time. Therefore, realizing high performance memory technologies is very critical for this revolution. This work contributes towards the development of one such technology; Magnetic Random Access Memory (MRAM) based on Magnetic Tunnel Junction (MTJ). The research conducted in this study is primarily focused on the process development for integrating MTJ on silicon. The film stack …

Application Of Maldis-Ms To Identification Of Phytoplankton In Ballast Water, Dana Woodruff, Karen L. Wahl, Nancy B. Valentine, Fred Dobbs Jan 2007

Application Of Maldis-Ms To Identification Of Phytoplankton In Ballast Water, Dana Woodruff, Karen L. Wahl, Nancy B. Valentine, Fred Dobbs

OES Faculty Publications

Non-native invasive species are increasingly evident in marine and estuarine environments, largely because of the intake and release of ballast water from sea vessels. Innovative methods are needed to quickly and accurately detect and speciate non-native and/or harmful phytoplankton in ballast water. Recent advances in ionization techniques such as matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) have allowed detection of intact biomolecules within ballast samples. Statistically-based algorithms are used to discern "fingerprints" of phytoplankton species and to discern individual species from mixtures. MALDI-MS is particularly attractive for field applications because of the speed of analysis, minimal liquids/consumables required, and femtomole (10-15) …

The School-To-Work Transition Of Students With Learning Disabilities: The Influence Of Identity Status, Personality, And Career Decidedness On Career Decision Making, Jennifer L. Merry Jan 2007

The School-To-Work Transition Of Students With Learning Disabilities: The Influence Of Identity Status, Personality, And Career Decidedness On Career Decision Making, Jennifer L. Merry

Theses

Students with learning disabilities have higher dropout rates and have lower wages and employment rates. Furthermore, students with learning disabilities are less likely to have a full-time job and are more likely to attend a two-year college rather than a four-year college compared to those without disabilities. Approximately three million students are classified as having a specific learning disability in the United States. The challenges and struggles they deal with during the school years continues into the world of work. Federal legislation (e.g., IDEA) mandates that a transition plan is included in a student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which needs …

We investigated the physical conditions of the Spring pack ice environment at Terra Nova Bay to understand their influence on the structure and physiology of sympagic microalgae. Bio-optical methods were used to study the availability and spectral quality of solar radiation, both inside and underneath the ice cover. Pack ice thickness was around 2.5 m, with a temperature between -2 and -7°C. On average, only 1.4% of surface PAR penetrated to the bottom ice and less than 0.6% below platelet ice level. Surface UV-B radiation under the bottom ice was 0.2-0.4%. Biomass concentrations up to 2400 mg Chl a m- …

Value-At-Risk In It Services Contracts, Robert J. Kauffman, Ryan Sougstad Jan 2007

Value-At-Risk In It Services Contracts, Robert J. Kauffman, Ryan Sougstad

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As information systems (IS) and technology solutions become increasingly service-driven, managers are faced with the task of choosing parameters such as service-levels, pricing, and contract duration. Information technology (IT) services vendors manage portfolios of contracts in which parameters, decided at inception, are often subject to future risks. The contract profit maximization decision may adversely affect the risk position of the firm's portfolio of services contracts. We propose a model to inform vendors on setting optimal parameters for IS contracts subject to acceptable levels of risk. The analytic model presented draws from IS economics research and the principles of value-at-risk (VaR) …

An Improvement Heuristic For The Timetabling Problem, Aldy Gunawan, Kien Ming Ng, Kim Leng Poh Jan 2007

An Improvement Heuristic For The Timetabling Problem, Aldy Gunawan, Kien Ming Ng, Kim Leng Poh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper formulates a timetabling problem, which is often encountered in a university, as a mathematical programming model. The proposed model combines both teacher assignment and course scheduling problems simultaneously, which causes the entire model to become more complex. We propose an improvement heuristic algorithm to solve such a model. The proposed algorithm has been tested with several randomly generated datasets of sizes that are comparable to those occurring in a university in Indonesia. The computational results show that the improvement heuristic is not only able to obtain good solutions, but is also able to do so within reasonable computational …

National Culture And Its Effects On Knowledge Communication In Online Virtual Communities, Keng Siau, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Min Ling

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online virtual communities provide a powerful means of knowledge sharing. Despite the prevalence of online virtual communities, there is a paucity of research to investigate the effect of national culture differences on knowledge sharing in online virtual communities. Are there differences between online virtual communities from different national cultures? This research studies the differences in knowledge-sharing activities between US-based and China-based online virtual communities. Hofstede's dimensions of national culture serve as the theoretical foundation for this research.

Merleau-Ponty On Human Motility And Libet's Paradox, T. Brian Mooney, Damien Norris Jan 2007

Merleau-Ponty On Human Motility And Libet's Paradox, T. Brian Mooney, Damien Norris

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In 1979, neuroscientists Libet, Wright, Feinstein and Pearl introduced the delay-and-antedating hypothesis/paradox based on the results of an on-going series of experiments dating back to 1964 that measured the neural adequacy [brain wave activity] of conscious sensory experience. What is fascinating about the results of this experiment is the implication, especially when considered in the light of Merleau-Ponty’s notions of intentionality and the pre-reflective life of human motility, that the body, and hence not solely the mind, is a thinking thing. The experiments and conclusions of Libet et al. have attracted considerable academic attention and have been used in the …
