A Hybrid Approach To Retrieving Web Documents And Semantic Web Data, Trivikram Immaneni Jan 2007

A Hybrid Approach To Retrieving Web Documents And Semantic Web Data, Trivikram Immaneni

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The Semantic Web has been evolving into a property-linked web of RDF data, conceptually divorced from (but physically housed in) the World Wide Web of hyperlinked documents. Data Retrieval techniques are typically used to retrieve data from the Semantic Web while Information Retrieval techniques are used to retrieve documents from the Hypertext Web. Conceptually unifying the two webs enables the exploitation of their interconnections resulting in benefits to both data and document retrieval. Towards this end, we present the Unified Web model that integrates the two webs and formalizes the structure and the semantics of their interconnections. We present a …

Interpreter Of Maladies: Analyzing Current Young Adult Indo-Caribbean Literature For Inclusion In Today's High School Canon, Reshma Ramkellawan Jan 2007

Interpreter Of Maladies: Analyzing Current Young Adult Indo-Caribbean Literature For Inclusion In Today's High School Canon, Reshma Ramkellawan

HIM 1990-2015

The high school English Language Arts curricula of Central Florida has faced increasing scrutiny during the past decade under often conflicting influences such as a rapidly diversifying student population, activism for and against multicultural curriculum reform, and pressure to streamline curricula and make it conform to state testing standards. Against this social backdrop, the question of how to introduce Inda-Caribbean literature at the secondary level presents unique intellectual and political challenges. On the one hand, first and second generation Inda-Caribbean migrants make up an increasingly significant percentage of Florida's student population. Like other first and second generation Caribbean migrants, Inda-Caribbean …

Space Matters: An Institutional Critique Of Distance Learning Within The University Of Central Florida English Department, Lori Mumpower Jan 2007

Space Matters: An Institutional Critique Of Distance Learning Within The University Of Central Florida English Department, Lori Mumpower

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines distance learning within a local, particular context: UCF's English department. In order to fully examine distance learning in this specific environment, I employ institutional critique as my methodology, a rhetorical and spatial approach that allows me to map distance learning within UCF's English department. Drawing upon the work of David Harvey, I examine the experienced, perceived, and imagined spaces of distance learning in our department. Through an examination of the history of naming UCF, rhetorical analyses of institutional documents that reference technologies, analysis of survey results noting faculty attitudes and perceptions of online learning, and postmodern mapping …

This research focuses on technology (specifically video games and interactive software games) and their effects on the cognitive development of children ages 4-8. The research will be conducted as a meta-analysis combining research and theory in order to determine if the educational approach to this age group needs to change/adapt to learners who have been affected by this technology. I will focus upon both the physical and mental aspects of their development and present a comprehensive review of current educational theory and practice. By examining current curriculum goals and cross-referencing them to research conducted in fields other than education (i.e. …

Patchwork Culture: Quilt Tactics And Digitextuality, Michelle P. Barrett Ferrier Jan 2007

Patchwork Culture: Quilt Tactics And Digitextuality, Michelle P. Barrett Ferrier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Embedded in the quilt top, the fabric patches are relays, time pathways to stories and memories of their former owners. Through the quilts, the voices of the past survive. The stories trace a path of connection between oral traditions, storytelling, the invention of meaning, and the preservation of cultural memory. The theory and method described herein use the quilt patchwork metaphor as the basis for a web interface for designing and modeling knowledge-based graphical, narrative, and multimedia data. More specifically, the method comprises a digital storytelling and knowledge management tool that allows one or more users to create, save, store, …

Proposed Revisions To The Aicpa Standards For Performing And Reporting On Peer Reviews; Exposure Draft (American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants), 2007, April 16, American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants. Peer Review Board

Exposure Drafts, Comment Letters, and Statements of Position

The most significant conclusions to come from the work of the above task forces were (1) a recommendation to merge the two peer review programs and (2) a recommendation to reengineer the reporting process to be more understandable and usable in light of the growing mandate that the results of peer reviews be made more widely available. The PRB has issued this exposure draft to propose those recommendations and incorporate other revisions to the Standards and related Interpretations (AICPA Professional Standards, PR Section 100) that are expected to result in a more efficient and effective Program. To ensure Program integrity …

From Habermas To "Get Rich Or Die Tryin": Hip Hop, The Telecommunications Act Of 1996, And The Black Public Sphere, Akilah N. Folami

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Article explores the manner in which gangsta rappers, who are primarily young urban Black men, navigate the mass media and rap's commercialization of the gangsta image to continue to provide seeds of political expression and resistance to that image. While other scholars have considered the political nature of rap in the context of the First Amendment, this Article's approach is unique in that it is the first to explore such concepts through the lenses of Habermas' ideal public sphere and those of his critics. While many have written gangsta rap off as being commercially co-opted or useless given its …

The Power Of Observation: The Role Of Federal Observers Under The Voting Rights Act, James Thomas Tucker Jan 2007

The Power Of Observation: The Role Of Federal Observers Under The Voting Rights Act, James Thomas Tucker

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) is one of the most successful civil rights laws ever enacted. Following its passage, the promise of the Fifteenth Amendment has become a reality for millions of Americans. Black voters in the South register to vote without being subjected to discriminatory tests or devices. Minority citizens can cast ballots free of intimidation and violence. Barriers posed by English-only elections have been removed for many language minority voters. Voters are permitted to receive assistance from the person of their choice. Federal observers play an indispensable role in serving as the eyes and ears of …

The Effects Of Institutional Aid On The College Affordability Index And Student Body Diversity, Glenn Anthony Teryek Jan 2007

The Effects Of Institutional Aid On The College Affordability Index And Student Body Diversity, Glenn Anthony Teryek

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Tuition for higher education continues to increase substantially, causing colleges to be less affordable for many traditional college students and their families. To make higher education more affordable, higher education administrators provide students with institutional aid. Such aid is awarded to students based on merit or need, and the way it is awarded may affect an institution's affordability and student body diversity. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of institutional aid on the rate of tuition increase and the diversity of the student body at colleges and universities. This study was further designed to determine if …

Capillary Flow Analysis And Computation Of De-Wetting And Wetting Resistances In Angular Geometries, Daniel Bolleddula Jan 2007

Capillary Flow Analysis And Computation Of De-Wetting And Wetting Resistances In Angular Geometries, Daniel Bolleddula

Dissertations and Theses

Capillary flows in containers or conduits with interior corners are commonplace in nature and industry. The majority of investigations addressing such flows solve the problem numerically in terms of a flow resistance coefficient (friction factor) for cases where spontaneous liquid spreading along the corner occurs for contact angles below the Concus-Finn critical wetting condition for the particular conduit geometry of interest. This research effort provides missing numerical data for the flow resistance function Fi for partially wetting systems above the Concus-Finn condition. In such cases the fluid spontaneously de-wets the interior corner and often retracts into corner-bound drops. A …

Democracy Stops At My Front Door: Obstacles To Gender Equality In South Africa, Penelope Andrews Jan 2007

Democracy Stops At My Front Door: Obstacles To Gender Equality In South Africa, Penelope Andrews

Articles & Chapters

In South Africa, post-apartheid legislation promulgated in pursuit of the constitutional commitment to equality demonstrates that the government, at least at the formal level, is committed to a comprehensive democratic framework that promotes such equality. Statutes such as the Promotion of Equality and the Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act, and the Black Empowerment Act amongst others, attest to the commitment of such a vision. In addition, statutes such as the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act, that purport to protect women in polygamous African customary unions, suggest that the South African Parliament is deeply committed …

But Did They Listen? The New Jersey Death Penalty Commission's Exercise In Abolitionism: A Detailed Reply, Robert Blecker Jan 2007

But Did They Listen? The New Jersey Death Penalty Commission's Exercise In Abolitionism: A Detailed Reply, Robert Blecker

Articles & Chapters

Based upon the nearly unanimous recommendation of its Death Penalty Study Commission, New Jersey seems poised to become the first state in the modern era to legislatively abolish capital punishment and substitute life without parole. Hailed nationally and internationally as thoughtful and fair, the Commission's final report consistently distorts the evidence, displays an anti-retributive bias, and worst of all, ignores basic well-established perspectives framing the great debate, avoiding at all costs the question of justice.

Unbalanced and biased, the Commission does not even consider any alternative to abolition or standing pat. This essay directly engages the Report on its findings …

Recommendations have been made throughout this paper, but in summary, Beaver High Adventure Base should do the following: First, an increase in marketing efforts should be directed toward the Scouts and Scoutmasters who are already involved in other Scouting activities. These are the easiest to reach and the most likely to attend high adventure camps. These efforts should emphasize the factors that are most important to the audience-they want to know they are going to have a great time because there is a variety of activities offered that have been purposefully planned to benefit the Scouts. Just mention shooting something, …

Comparison Of Scribal Variants Between New Testament Manuscripts And Apocryphal Manuscripts, Seth Kohrman Jan 2007

Comparison Of Scribal Variants Between New Testament Manuscripts And Apocryphal Manuscripts, Seth Kohrman

Student Works

Today biblical scholars, theologians, and lay Christians recognize the difference between the canonical and apocryphal literature that have come down through the centuries to modern times. The purpose of the discussion here is to demonstrate by means of textual criticism that early scribes who copied Christian texts may have also differentiated between what are termed modernly as canonical and apocryphal literature respectively. The extensive research of prominent biblical scholars will be drawn upon in order to establish and support this thesis. However, the greatest difficulty and challenge of this topic is that there is an abundance of information, but currently …
