Comparison Of Efficiency Of An Advanced Oxidation Process For Degrading Major Classes Of Dyes, Fatima Hasan Abdullah Ai-Hamedi Jan 2007

Comparison Of Efficiency Of An Advanced Oxidation Process For Degrading Major Classes Of Dyes, Fatima Hasan Abdullah Ai-Hamedi

Theses

Synthetic dyes are a major part of our life. Products ranging from clothes to leather

Accessories to furniture all depend on extensive use of organic dyes.

There are numerous classes of these dyes. However, azo, anthraquinonoid,

Triarylmethane, diarylmethane, acridine, quinine, xanthane and nitro represent the major

Classes and are most commonly used dyes.

An unfortunate side effect of their widespread use is the fact that up to 12% of these dyes are

Wasted during the dyeing process, and that approximately 20% of this waste enters the environment (mostly in water supply). The effluents from these industries cause the water bodies …

Social Support And Reproductive Health In 15 To 24 Year Old Immigrant Latinas In The San Francisco Bay Area, Ahou Meydani Jan 2007

Social Support And Reproductive Health In 15 To 24 Year Old Immigrant Latinas In The San Francisco Bay Area, Ahou Meydani

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This study examines how social support is related to reproductive health risk among 15-24 year old immigrant Latinas residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a cross-sectional, clinic-based study, composed of a sample of 68 immigrant Latina women, aged 15-24 (mean 18.7, S.D. 2.2), recruited from waiting rooms at two clinics in Oakland. Participants completed an interviewer-administered questionnaire and provided blood and self-obtained vaginal swab specimens to test for sexually transmitted infections. Three dimensions of social support were assessed: 1) functional support, using the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) Social Support Survey; 2) structural support (quantity of support sources); …

Unjust Enrichment Within A Valid Contract: A Close Look At Roxborough V. Rothmans Of Pall Mall Australia Ltd, Hang Wu Tang Jan 2007

Unjust Enrichment Within A Valid Contract: A Close Look At Roxborough V. Rothmans Of Pall Mall Australia Ltd, Hang Wu Tang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This paper examines the decision of the High Court of Australia, Roxborough v Rothmans of Pall Mall Australia Ltd. In particular, this paper interrogates the suggestion by some English commentators that the principle of unjust enrichment ought to apply in this case. This suggestion is controversial because this case is a situation where there was a valid contract between [*2] the parties. In this paper, the central argument advanced is a negative thesis: the unjust enrichment principle is inappropriate as a framework of analysis in the Roxborough context. In a situation like Roxborough, there are two hurdles before the unjust …

It Takes Time: Impacts Of Early Head Start That Lead To Reductions In Maternal Depression Two Years Later, Rachel Chazan-Cohen, Catherine Ayoub, Barbara Alexander Pan, Lori Roggman, Helen Raikes, Lorraine Mckelvey, Leanne Whiteside-Mansell, Andrea Hart Jan 2007

It Takes Time: Impacts Of Early Head Start That Lead To Reductions In Maternal Depression Two Years Later, Rachel Chazan-Cohen, Catherine Ayoub, Barbara Alexander Pan, Lori Roggman, Helen Raikes, Lorraine Mckelvey, Leanne Whiteside-Mansell, Andrea Hart

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The Early Head Start Research and Evaluation Project, a random-assignment evaluation, found a broad pattern of positive impacts for children and families. However, there were no program impacts on depression or use of mental health services by the time children reached age 3, at the end of the Early Head Start (EHS) program. This paper presents recent findings from the follow-up study in the spring prior to the children entering kindergarten, when a positive program impact emerged for reducing maternal depression. Results show that earlier program impacts on children and parents (when children were 2 and 3 years of age) …

Toward A Human Rights Framework For Intellectual Property, Laurence R. Helfer Jan 2007

Toward A Human Rights Framework For Intellectual Property, Laurence R. Helfer

Faculty Scholarship

This Article, prepared for a Symposium on Intellectual Property and Social Justice held at the University of California at Davis School of Law in March 2006, addresses the growing intersection of human rights law and intellectual property law. Its principal point of departure is a November 2005 General Comment on "the right of everyone to benefit from the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author" - a relatively obscure provision of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The Article builds upon the analysis …

Applying The Access Principle In Law: The Responsibilities Of The Legal Scholar, Richard A. Danner Jan 2007

Applying The Access Principle In Law: The Responsibilities Of The Legal Scholar, Richard A. Danner

Faculty Scholarship

This article applies to legal scholarship the ideas developed and argued in John Willinsky’s 2006 book: 'The Access Principle: The Case for Open Access to Research and Scholarship' regarding the responsibilities of scholars to make their works widely available through open access mechanisms via the Internet. Willinsky’s access principle states that “A commitment to the value and quality of research carries with it a responsibility to extend the circulation of such work as far as possible and ideally to all who are in interested in it and all who might profit by it.” For Willinsky, the transformation of scholarly journals …

The True Lex Mercatoria: Private Law Beyond The State, Ralf Michaels Jan 2007

The True Lex Mercatoria: Private Law Beyond The State, Ralf Michaels

Faculty Scholarship

Is there an anational lex mercatoria, a "global law without a state?" The debate seems infinite. Some argue that the rules, institutions, and procedures of international arbitration have now achieved a sufficient degree both of autonomy from the state and of legal character that they represent such an anational law. Others respond that whatever law merchant may exist is really state law—dependent on national norms and the freedom of contract they provide, and on the enforceability of arbitral awards by national courts. This paper suggests that the dichotomy of anational law and state law is false. Although an anational law …

Urban Danish Foodways And Ethnic Marketing Strategies In Bien, 1900-1950, Catrine Kyster Christensen Giery

The Bridge

Food culture is an integral part of popular culture. Fabio Parasecoli defines popular culture as “the totality of ideas, values, embodied experiences, representations, material items, practices, social relations, organizations, and institutions that are conceived, produced, experienced, and reciprocally connected within environments influenced by markets and consumption, with or without the specific economic goal of reaping a profit.” When food culture appears in the semi-public sphere—for example, in grocery stores, restaurants, bars, butcher stores, and bakeries, it demarcates a space where the desires and strategies of businessmen and consumers meet. Consumers want the products they need at an affordable price, and …

Grade Retention In High Stakes And Low Stakes Testing Years, Anna Elizabeth Ball Jan 2007

Grade Retention In High Stakes And Low Stakes Testing Years, Anna Elizabeth Ball

LSU Master's Theses

Recent political calls for an end to social promotion have led to an era in which many states are using high stakes tests to make retention decisions. Several decades of research have shown that retention is not an effective practice academically or socially. Louisiana is one state that has adopted a high stakes testing policy. This study examines a state-wide database to examine the predictors of retention in high stakes and low stakes testing years. Multiple regression analyses, discriminant analyses, and logistic regression analyses were run on data from students in grade 4 through grade 8 in Louisiana. The results …

Coalitions And Collective Memories: A Search For Common Ground, Ediberto Román Jan 2007

Coalitions And Collective Memories: A Search For Common Ground, Ediberto Román

Faculty Publications

The following pages explore this contemporary debate, and ultimately sides in favor of inter-minority group coalitions, as they may be effective democratic vehicles towards social change. Part II examines the argument in favor of inter-minority group coalitions. Part III addresses the challenges to those positions, including the arguments posed by leading skeptics. Finally, Part IV rejects the cynicism associated with coalitions and proposes a concrete point of commonality that may help forge much needed common ground for many racial and ethnic outsider groups.

Bishopness, Lauren Goodwin Slaughter Jan 2007

Bishopness, Lauren Goodwin Slaughter

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The publication of "Edgar Allen Poe & the Juke-Box" modifies Elizabeth Bishop’s established oeuvre in ways that demonstrate the anxiety throughout her work regarding the concealment of sexual difference—a concealment she often takes part in. As the poems reveal, by putting emphasis on particular kinds of clothing, Bishop emphasizes the necessary—but flawed—methods for that concealment. Black stockings, gloves, sailors hats, and other garments of traditional gender representation work as useful metaphors, symbolically engaging the construction of the literary image accepted in the academy which has produced the unified notion of “Bishopness” some critics still wish to uphold. When themes of …

Hunters In The Garden: Yup’Ik Subsistence And The Agricultural Myths Of Eden, Benjamin Kuntz Jan 2007

Hunters In The Garden: Yup’Ik Subsistence And The Agricultural Myths Of Eden, Benjamin Kuntz

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Yup’ik writers and Yup’ik subsistence offer valuable challenges, parallels, and alternative models to mainstream nature writing’s discourse surrounding human relationships to the land, a discourse that carries an inherent agricultural bias. An introduction to western Alaska’s Nunivak Island provides context for Chapter 1, which demonstrates the fluidity of cultural, geographical, and historical margins through discussion of the works of Yup’ik journalist John Active and historian and ethnographer James Clifford. Chapter 2 provides an overview of Yup’ik subsistence centered around the community of Bethel, Alaska, then subjects mainstream nature writing, represented mostly by Wendell Berry, to critiques supplied by Canadian anthropologist …

Disrupted Conventions: Gender Roles In Mildred Walker's The Curlew's Cry And Winter Wheat, Pandora Andre-Beatty Jan 2007

Disrupted Conventions: Gender Roles In Mildred Walker's The Curlew's Cry And Winter Wheat, Pandora Andre-Beatty

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In this thesis, I discuss the significance of gender in Mildred Walker’s novels The Curlew’s Cry and Winter Wheat. Walker wrote and situates both narratives in Montana, supporting my argument that literature of the American West remains a productive area for examining gender roles. The Curlew’s Cry is set at the closing of the American frontier in the early 20th century, while Winter Wheat is set during the settled agricultural era of the 1940s. I argue that instead of re-enforcing gender stereotypes commonly found in novels set in the American West during and after the white settlement of the plains, …

Reading Placelessness And Suburbanization In Richard Yates, Darcy Anne Feder Jan 2007

Reading Placelessness And Suburbanization In Richard Yates, Darcy Anne Feder

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The themes of suburbanization and placelessness arise in many of Yates’ novels, exposing the continuing pattern of “conformity at any price” which accompanied the rapidly-changing era of post-World War II America. As suburbanization began to take its toll on the American landscape, a new, increasingly placeless environment started to emerge; endless subdivisions of identical houses, commercial strip developments, shopping centers, and movie plazas sprang up, places which not only looked alike, but felt alike. A cultural shift accompanied this changing environment, one which embraced a new “domestic ideal” of the suburban family, an image constantly reinforced through the media of …

Year Of The Snake, Annie Hoang Nguyen

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Year of the Snake is a travel narrative and family memoir that details a year of the author’s life as a Fulbright scholar in Vietnam. Twenty-five years after the author’s parents have fled Vietnam as war refugees, the author returns to her parents’ homeland. The author spends 2001 exploring and examining this forsaken homeland. She has three distinct experiences, as a student living with my uncle as his adopted daughter, as a backpacker exhilarated by the culture and land, and as a privileged ex-pat working among locals. Through these varied experiences, I began to see how Vietnam was trying to …

A Revision Of Family And Domesticity In Michael Cunningham's A Home At The End Of The World, Flesh And Blood, And The Hours, Tracy Joy Struck Jan 2007

A Revision Of Family And Domesticity In Michael Cunningham's A Home At The End Of The World, Flesh And Blood, And The Hours, Tracy Joy Struck

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Primarily through the experiences of his gay protagonists, Michael Cunningham critiques the heteronormative nuclear family structure of the 1950s and depicts alternatives to it. Drawing on the work of feminist critics who focus on the political intent of American women authors during the nineteenth century, the findings of family historians who examine families of the 1950s, and the work of anthropologist Kath Weston, I argue that Michael Cunningham represents domesticity in ways that promote readers' appreciation of and support for alternative family models.

Reassessing Damages In Securities Fraud Class Actions, Elizabeth Chamblee Burch Jan 2007

Reassessing Damages In Securities Fraud Class Actions, Elizabeth Chamblee Burch

Scholarly Works

No coherent doctrinal statement exists for calculating open-market damages for securities fraud class actions. Instead, courts have tried in vain to fashion common-law deceit and misrepresentation remedies to fit open-market fraud. The result is a relatively ineffective system with a hallmark feature: unpredictable damage awards. This poses a significant fraud deterrence problem from both a practical and a theoretical standpoint.

In 2005, the Supreme Court had the opportunity to clarify open-market damage principles and to facilitate earlier dismissal of cases without compensable economic losses. Instead, in Dura Pharmaceuticals v. Broudo, it further confused the damage issue by (1) perpetuating the …

Becoming American - According To The Jorgensens, Torben Tvorup Christensen

The Bridge

For those who have waited a long time for this article about integration among Danish-American immigrants I can only say that I am sorry. Lack of time has kept me away from my Danish-English dictionary and thus prevented me from writing a more public friendly version of my Masters Thesis. Knowing how difficult it would be to convert more than a hundred pages into a few readable lines-I guess-is the real reason why I have not undertaken this task before now. Another reason is simply that I each time I began thinking about doing something I was being overwhelmed by …
