Acculturation And Depression Among Hispanics: The Moderating Effect Of Intercultural Competence, Lucas Torres, David Rollock Jan 2007

Acculturation And Depression Among Hispanics: The Moderating Effect Of Intercultural Competence, Lucas Torres, David Rollock

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

In the present study the authors examined the relative contributions of typical acculturation indicators, general coping, and intercultural competence in predicting depression among 96 Hispanic adults. The results indicated that intercultural competence served to moderate the relationship between acculturation and depression. The combination of high acculturation and high intercultural competence was associated with fewer symptoms. General coping accounted for significant amounts of variance in predicting depression, over and above traditional acculturation variables alone, suggesting that an active problem-solving style was associated with a healthier outcome. The findings are discussed within the context of integrating competence-based variables into psychological conceptualizations of …

A Task To Manipulate Attentional Load, Set-Shifting, And Inhibitory Control: Convergent Validity And Test–Retest Reliability Of The Parametric Go/No-Go Test, Scott Aaron Langenecker, Jon-Kar Zubieta, Elizabeth A. Young, Kristy A. Nielson

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Traditional neuropsychological measures of executive functioning are difficult to employ in functional imaging and clinical trial contexts and have tremendous practice effects. They also have poor sensitivity and specificity, while test–retest reliability is often not assessed in computer-based tests. The present study evaluates some psychometric properties of a new Parametric Go/No-Go (PGNG) Task. The PGNG consists of three levels of difficulty assessing attention, set-shifting, and processing speed, with the two more difficult levels assessing inhibitory control. A total of 63 healthy control participants were recruited at two sites to evaluate the psychometric properties of the PGNG. The PGNG was found …

Effects Of Dissipation On A Quantum Critical Point With Disorder, Jose A. Hoyos, Chetan Kotabage, Thomas Vojta Jan 2007

Effects Of Dissipation On A Quantum Critical Point With Disorder, Jose A. Hoyos, Chetan Kotabage, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the effects of dissipation on a disordered quantum phase transition with O(N) order-parameter symmetry by applying a strong-disorder renormalization group to the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson field theory of the problem. We find that Ohmic dissipation results in a nonperturbative infinite-randomness critical point with unconventional activated dynamical scaling while super-Ohmic damping leads to conventional behavior. We discuss applications to the superconductor-metal transition in nanowires and to the Hertz theory of the itinerant antiferromagnetic transition.

Understanding Students' Motivation In Physical Education: Integration Of Expectancy-Value Model And Self-Efficacy Theory, Zan Gao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to integrate the expectancy-value model of achievement choice and self-efficacy theory among middle school students, with the goal of better understanding students’ motivational beliefs and the factors that influence these beliefs. Three quantitative studies were conducted to address this purpose. In study 1, the expectancy-value model constructs (expectancy-related beliefs and subjective task values) and self-efficacy theory constructs (self-efficacy and outcome expectancy) were measured in a sample of 225 students and were used to predict students’ in-class activity levels during a 2-week follow-up. Results of path analyses yielded that the hypothesized model fit the data …

An Examination Of The Expectations And Experiences Of Beginning Teachers Of The Gifted, Kimberly Nicole Mcglonn Jan 2007

An Examination Of The Expectations And Experiences Of Beginning Teachers Of The Gifted, Kimberly Nicole Mcglonn

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Researchers in the field of gifted education have pointed to the need for deeper understanding of the complex expectations and experiences of beginning teachers of the gifted (Pollak, 1996; Hanninen, 1988), that is, teachers of the gifted who have less than three years’ experience teaching gifted learners. Further, several important questions remain unanswered regarding the structure/content of preparation for pre-service teachers of the gifted (Joffe, 2001; Chan, 2001; Mills, 2003; Hansen and Feldhusen, 1994; Johnsen, 2004). Finally, the field of gifted education would benefit from insight into the experiences of beginning teachers of the gifted, particularly insight from a first-hand …

Role Of Heparanase And Heparanase-Degraded Heparan Sulfate In Brain-Metastatic Melanoma, Madhuchhanda Roy Jan 2007

Role Of Heparanase And Heparanase-Degraded Heparan Sulfate In Brain-Metastatic Melanoma, Madhuchhanda Roy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cancer metastasis is a frequent manifestation of malignant melanoma progression. Successful invasion into distant organs by tumor cells must include attachment to microvessel endothelial cells, and degradation of extracellular matrix. Heparan sulfate proteoglycans are ubiquitous macromolecules associated with cell surface and extracellular matrix of a wide range of cells and tissues. Heparanase is an extracellular matrix degradative enzyme which degrades the heparan sulfate chains of heparan sulfate proteoglycans. To investigate effects of changes in heparanase gene expression in metastatic melanoma cells, we constructed adenoviral vectors containing the full-length human heparanase cDNA in both sense (Ad-S/hep) and anti-sense orientations (Ad-AS/hep). We …

Alphabetic And Phonemic Awareness In Toddlers, Pamela A. Terrell Jan 2007

Alphabetic And Phonemic Awareness In Toddlers, Pamela A. Terrell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The ability of 20-24 month-old toddlers to recognize graphemes and phonemes was investigated by reading a Phonic Faces (PF) alphabet picture book. Phonic Faces iconically picture a letter in the mouth of a character producing the sound (the curve of the P looks like the top lip popping the /p/ sound). The book was composed of nine letters and was read individually to experimental subjects three times weekly for six weeks. The control group received no treatment, but engaged in individual play activities for comparable time. Following six-weeks the groups alternated so the former control group now received the alphabet …

A Teacher, H. Jefferson Powell Jan 2007

A Teacher, H. Jefferson Powell

Michigan Law Review

James Boyd White is, above all, a teacher. Of course, that is in fact an inexact statement: Jim White is many things, some of them of greater or more central human importance - husband, father, friend, person of faith. But in this essay my concern is with Jim as an academic, and in that context I believe the title teacher captures best his goals and his achievement.
