Evaluation Of Fluorapatite As A Waste-Form Material, Dennis W. Lindle, Oliver Hemmers, Dale L. Perry Jan 2007

Evaluation Of Fluorapatite As A Waste-Form Material, Dennis W. Lindle, Oliver Hemmers, Dale L. Perry

Separations Campaign (TRP)

Argonne National Laboratory has proposed a new extraction procedure to handle TRISO-coated fuels, the Fluoride Extraction Process, or FLEX. The FLEX process is designed to separate the uranium in the fuel from the actinides and most fission products by taking advantage of the unique properties of uranium hexafluoride (UF6). In the FLEX process, the used TRISO fuel is reacted with zirconium fluoride salt, forming UF6 and the fluoride salts of the actinides and fission products. At process temperatures, the UF6 volatizes into a gas, and is released from the molten salt mixture. This leaves behind the …

Attitudes Of Diverse Women Superintendents Toward Nine Tenets Of Effective Leadership, Salwa Abdel-Hamid Zaki

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Current data show that approximately 65--75% of the teaching force is women, yet only 12--13% of today's public school superintendents are women. The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership styles, behaviors, and attitudes of diverse women superintendents. Nine tenets of effective leadership, taken from extant research, evolved from the WILD (Women in Leadership Development) Project, a study of women in executive leadership positions across multiple fields and disciplines (Wolverton, et al., 2003). The nine tenets were: (1) Effective leaders are passionate about their organizations. (2) Effective leaders are reflective. (3) Effective leaders are competent. (4) Effective leaders …

Using Cluster Analysis To Evaluate The Academic Performance Of Demographic Homogeneous Subsets, Jeffrey N Halsell Jan 2007

Using Cluster Analysis To Evaluate The Academic Performance Of Demographic Homogeneous Subsets, Jeffrey N Halsell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requires states to develop, under very specific conditions, a valid and reliable system of measurement that meets certain requirements while neglecting others. One such provision is a system of assessments that holds all schools to the same academic criteria, regardless of circumstance, while at the same time acknowledging an achievement gap exists between certain subpopulations of students. Nevada has developed such a program, which effectively fulfills the requirements of NCLB, and like NCLB, neglects to recognize the unique challenges for those schools housing larger than average populations of lower-performing students; Historically, when discussing the achievement …

Rhetorical Criticism Of Absence And Silence Of University Presidents At The Grokster Court, Lawrence Eyo Ita

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the peer-to-peer file sharing case of MGM v. Grokster, university presidents and university associations did not submit any amicus curiae briefs; The purpose of this study was to conduct a rhetorical criticism of this absence and silence as symbolic action. Using legal research and situational criticism, the study explores the reaction of university presidents during the earlier phases of the file sharing phenomenon as well as their absence and silence at the Supreme Court in light of the questions that litigants urged the Court to decide; It was found that escalating peer to peer file sharing degraded university network …

Gertrude Stein, Vladimir Nabokov And The Language Of Exile An Analysis Of Writing Strategies Beyond The Nation, Edith Manuela Gelu Jan 2007

Gertrude Stein, Vladimir Nabokov And The Language Of Exile An Analysis Of Writing Strategies Beyond The Nation, Edith Manuela Gelu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study analyzes three texts by Vladimir Nabokov---Lolita, Pale Fire and Speak, Memory---and three by Gertrude Stein---"Patriarchal Poetry", "Poetry and Grammar" and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas---employing theoretical concepts from Deleuze and Guattari's Kafka: Toward a Minor Literature to argue that both writers use specific writing strategies to resist the category of nation and the traditional view of exile as an essentially painful experience. While Nabokov thematizes exile frequently, his views on nation and exile reside at a deeper level, visible as undermining conventional means of understanding language. I read in his concern for misrepresentation the overarching strategy of …

Design Implementation And Analysis Of A Dynamic Cryptography Algorithm With Applications, Sourabh Ghose Jan 2007

Design Implementation And Analysis Of A Dynamic Cryptography Algorithm With Applications, Sourabh Ghose

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Cryptographers need to provide the world with a new encryption standard. DES, the major encryption algorithm for the past fifteen years, is nearing the end of its useful life. Its 56-bit key size is vulnerable to a brute-force attack on powerful microprocessors and recent advances in linear cryptanalysis and differential cryptanalysis indicate that DES is vulnerable to other attacks as well. A more recent attack called XSL, proposes a new attack against AES and Serpent. The attack depends much more critically on the complexity of the nonlinear components than on the number of rounds. Ciphers with small S-boxes and simple …

Monte Carlo Analysis Of The Luminosity Function Of Gamma Ray Bursts, Francisco Javier Virgili Jan 2007

Monte Carlo Analysis Of The Luminosity Function Of Gamma Ray Bursts, Francisco Javier Virgili

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Gamma-ray bursts are cosmological explosions that result in a massive release of radiation ranging from high-energy-gamma rays and x-rays as well as possible long lasting optical and radio tails. Bursts are a result of processes occurring in old stars and their by-products, namely black holes and neutron stars. Gamma-ray bursts tied to the deaths of stars are known as long gamma-ray bursts and are the subject of this study. Data from various missions including NASAs Compton Gamma Ray Observatory and Swift Gamma-ray Mission (Swift) shows that typical GRBs lie within a luminosity range of roughly 1049 to 1054 ergs s-1 …

Mathematical Modeling Of Magnetohydrodynamic Micropumps, Juan Katoff Afonien Jan 2007

Mathematical Modeling Of Magnetohydrodynamic Micropumps, Juan Katoff Afonien

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A lab-on-a-chip (LOC) system is a minute chemical processing plant consisting of interconnected networks of microchannels and reservoirs operating with small volumes of reagents. In many LOC systems, it is necessary to propel fluids from one part of the device to another, control fluid motion, stir and interact various reagents, and detect the presence of target analytes. In LOC systems, these tasks are far from trivial; This thesis focuses on fluid propulsion under the action of electric and magnetic fields. Both Non-RedOx and RedOx-based Magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) micropumps, in which the flow is directed by judicious interplay between electric and magnetic …

Parties' Defenses To Binding Arbitration Agreements In The Health Care Field & The Operation Of The Mccarran-Ferguson Act Comment., Elizabeth K. Stanley Jan 2007

Parties' Defenses To Binding Arbitration Agreements In The Health Care Field & The Operation Of The Mccarran-Ferguson Act Comment., Elizabeth K. Stanley

St. Mary's Law Journal

Arbitration is a process which allows parties voluntarily to refer their disputes to an impartial third person, an arbiter, selected by them to determine the parties’ rights and liabilities. Initially, arbitration was encouraged between corporate entities with equal bargaining power. But, due to federal policy favoring arbitration, the use of predispute arbitration agreements have increased dramatically, and such clauses can now be found in many noncommercial consumer contracts, especially those in the health care industry. The strong federal policy favoring arbitration originated with Congress’ passing of the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA). Under the FAA, an arbitration agreement is enforceable if …

Microsoft Windows Vista: The Beginning Or The End Of End-User License Agreements As We Know Them Recent Development., Rebecca K. Lively

St. Mary's Law Journal

Microsoft Windows Vista’s widespread use and influence on the market represents an ideal case study on the enforceability, pitfalls, and future of the End-User License Agreement (EULA). Since the release of the Windows Vista operating system in early 2007, Microsoft consumers often do not realize they are entering into a contract with Microsoft when they install Windows Vista onto their computer. Microsoft consumers probably do not realize that they may be clicking away valuable rights. In analyzing the enforceability of the specific terms of the Windows Vista EULA, Washington law will be the primary source because the Windows Vista EULA …

Nontestimonial Hearsay After Crawford, Davis And Bockting, Laird Kirkpatrick Jan 2007

Nontestimonial Hearsay After Crawford, Davis And Bockting, Laird Kirkpatrick

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The Sixth Amendment of the United States Constitution bars some hearsay from being introduced against criminal defendants on the ground that it would violate their right to confront the witnesses against them. In a recent series of decisions - Crawford, Davis and Bockting - the U.S. Supreme Court has narrowed the scope of the Confrontation Clause by interpreting it to govern only testimonial hearsay. This article criticizes the analysis and process by which the Court reached its conclusion that the Confrontation Clause has no application to nontestimonial hearsay and raises questions of history and policy about the possible dangers of …

Nothing Is Real: Protecting The Regulatory Void Through Federal Preemption By Inaction, Robert L. Glicksman Jan 2007

Nothing Is Real: Protecting The Regulatory Void Through Federal Preemption By Inaction, Robert L. Glicksman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Whether a federal statute preempts state law has important implications for the allocation of power between the federal and state governments. One aspect of preemption doctrine that has received relatively little scholarly attention is whether the federal government's failure to act is capable of preempting state law and, if so, when. In the regulatory context, Congress must first decide whether as a normative matter it should preempt state law despite its decision not to regulate activities regulated by states. Once Congress has done so, the courts may need to interpret federal legislation to determine whether Congress has decided to preempt …

Judicial Interpretation In The Cost-Benefit Crucible, Jonathan R. Siegel Jan 2007

Judicial Interpretation In The Cost-Benefit Crucible, Jonathan R. Siegel

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article responds to Professor Adrian Vermeule's new book, Judging Under Uncertainty. Professor Vermeule argues that (1) no one can empirically determine whether judicial use of legislative history or other interpretive methods that go beyond simple enforcement of plain text has any positive net benefits, but (2) we do know that such interpretive methods impose costs, and therefore (3) courts should discard such interpretive methods. This article suggests that (1) it is far from clear how costly these interpretive methods are, (2) it is also not clear that discarding them would result in any cost savings, both because of costs …

Effect Of Horizontal Piles On The Soil Bearing Capacity For Circular Footing Above Cavity, Rafael L. Arosemena Jan 2007

Effect Of Horizontal Piles On The Soil Bearing Capacity For Circular Footing Above Cavity, Rafael L. Arosemena

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The design of foundation in normal soil conditions is governed by bearing capacity, minimum depth of foundation and settlement. However, foundation design in karst regions needs to consider an additional criterion associated to the possibility of subsurface subsidence and ravelling sinkholes. Under this environment, alternative techniques are needed to improve the subsurface soil. In this study general background information is given to understand the geological characteristics of Central Florida and why this area is considered to be a karst region and susceptible to sinkholes formation. Traditional foundation design techniques on karst regions are addressed in this paper. Finally, the use …

Design For Auditory Displays: Identifying Temporal And Spatial Information Conveyance Principles, Ali Ahmad Jan 2007

Design For Auditory Displays: Identifying Temporal And Spatial Information Conveyance Principles, Ali Ahmad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Designing auditory interfaces is a challenge for current human-systems developers. This is largely due to a lack of theoretical guidance for directing how best to use sounds in today's visually-rich graphical user interfaces. This dissertation provided a framework for guiding the design of audio interfaces to enhance human-systems performance. This doctoral research involved reviewing the literature on conveying temporal and spatial information using audio, using this knowledge to build three theoretical models to aid the design of auditory interfaces, and empirically validating select components of the models. The three models included an audio integration model that outlines an end-to-end process …
