Balanced School Calendar And Its Effects On Student Achievement In Two Rural Georgia Schools, Ernestine R. Jackson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This study analyzed the impact of the balanced calendar on reading, English/language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science achievement. Performance data on thirdand fifth-grade students enrolled in a school implementing a balanced calendar for three years were compared with the performance data on third- and fifth-grade students enrolled in a similar school utilizing the traditional calendar. The population in this causal-comparative study was third- and fifth-grade students in these two schools. The over-riding research question was: To what extent does a balanced calendar affect student academic achievement? Independent-samples t tests were conducted to determine statistically significant differences in reading achievement, …
All For One, But Not One For All: The Knowledge/Power Struggle And Its Effect On Teacher Autonomy, Amy Phelps Fouse
All For One, But Not One For All: The Knowledge/Power Struggle And Its Effect On Teacher Autonomy, Amy Phelps Fouse
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Addressing current issues in English Language-Arts education, this study analyzes teacher perception of the paradoxical relationship between the Georgia Performance Standards and high-stakes testing accountability measures. This study examines teacher response to the implementation of Georgia Performance Standards and the oppression of federal accountability measures. This study also investigates whether Georgia Performance Standards can, in fact, promote equity through a multicultural and democratic pedagogy. This study further investigates whether or not standardized assessment serves to squelch equity and enforce power structures of bureaucracy through superseding the state curriculum in English-Language Arts. A mixed methods study was created to measure differences …

Understanding The Influences On The Homework Experiences Of Low-Socioeconomic, African American, Kindergarten Students, Sheryl Florantine Venable
Understanding The Influences On The Homework Experiences Of Low-Socioeconomic, African American, Kindergarten Students, Sheryl Florantine Venable
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Mixed views exist on the benefits of homework for elementary students. The focus of this interpretive case study was to understand the influences on the homework experiences of 10 low-socioeconomic, African American kindergarten students. The general research question framed by Bandura's (1986) social cognitive theory was stated as followed: How do the students' personal processes, the parents' home and the teachers school classroom environments, and the students' school academic behaviors interact to influence the homework experiences of low-socioeconomic, African-American kindergarten students? The data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. Interviews and records of homework and quiz grades revealed that …
Taking Text Too Seriously: Modern Textualism, Original Meaning, And The Case Of Amar's Bill Of Rights, William Michael Treanor
Taking Text Too Seriously: Modern Textualism, Original Meaning, And The Case Of Amar's Bill Of Rights, William Michael Treanor
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Championed on the Supreme Court by Justices Scalia and Thomas and championed in academia most prominently by Professor Akhil Amar, textualism has in the past twenty years emerged as a leading school of constitutional interpretation. Textualists argue that the Constitution should be interpreted in accordance with its original public meaning and, in seeking that meaning, they closely parse the Constitution's words and grammar and the placement of clauses in the document. They have assumed that this close parsing recaptures original meaning, but, perhaps because it seems obviously correct, that assumption has neither been defended nor challenged. This article uses Professor …

Participation and empowerment are two important keywords in agricultural development program. One of the agricultural programs that considerably implemented through farmer’s participation towards empowerment is Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This article reviews the reflection of the concepts and implementations of farmer’s participation and empowerment in the coffee Integrated Pest Management for Smallholder Estate Crops (IPM-SECP). It can be explained that farmers were participated only in the planning and implementation stages of the project, while monitoring and evaluation activities were solely done by the project implementing unit and other related agencies. In the planning stage, the extent of farmer’s participation can …
Multi-Order Neurons For Evolutionary Higher Order Clustering And Growth, Kiruthika Ramanathan, Sheng Uei Guan
Multi-Order Neurons For Evolutionary Higher Order Clustering And Growth, Kiruthika Ramanathan, Sheng Uei Guan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This letter proposes to use multiorder neurons for clustering irregularly shaped data arrangements. Multiorder neurons are an evolutionary extension of the use of higher-order neurons in clustering. Higher-order neurons parametrically model complex neuron shapes by replacing the classic synaptic weight by higher-order tensors. The multiorder neuron goes one step further and eliminates two problems associated with higher-order neurons. First, it uses evolutionary algorithms to select the best neuron order for a given problem. Second, it obtains more information about the underlying data distribution by identifying the correct order for a given cluster of patterns. Empirically we observed that when the …

Collaborative Routing Algorithm For Wireless Sensor Network Longevity, Shishir Bashyal, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study proposes a new parameter for evaluating longevity of wireless sensor networks after showing that the existing parameters do not properly evaluate the performance of algorithms in increasing longevity. This study also proposes an ant inspired Collaborative Routing Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Network Longevity (CRAWL) that has scalability and adaptability features required in most wireless sensor networks. Using the proposed longevity metrics and implementing the algorithm in simulations, it is shown that CRAWL is much more adaptive to non-uniform distribution of available energy in sensor networks. The performance of CRAWL is compared to that of a non-collaborative algorithm. Both …

The lack of trust is one of the most frequently cited reasons for customer's not returning to Internet service providers. As a new form of commercial activity, online financial services and stock trading involve more uncertainty and risk than traditional financial services. Trust is therefore a relatively influential factor of customer behavior in online financial services. The purpose of this study is to propose a framework of Intention to continuously adopt online financial services. Furthermore, the mediated effects of website trust are trusted. The main method of data collection for this study is a survey instrument designed by the author. …

Many emerging high-performance applications require distributed infrastructure that is significantly more powerful and flexible than traditional Grids. Such applications require the optimization, close integration, and control of all Grid resources, including networks. The EnLIGHTened (ENL) Computing Project has designed an architectural framework that allows Grid applications to dynamically request (in-advance or on-demand) any type of Grid resource: computers, storage, instruments, and deterministic, high-bandwidth network paths, including lightpaths. Based on application requirements, the ENL middleware communicates with Grid resource managers and, when availability is verified, co-allocates all the necessary resources. ENL's Domain Network Manager controls all network resource allocations to dynamically …

Time-Adaptive Numerical Simulation For High Speed Networks, Suman Kumar, Seung Jong Park, S. Sitharama Iyengar, Jung Han Kimn
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
As the bandwidth of networks is increasing exponentially, the computational cost to simulate such type of networks is also growing in a similar fashion. This paper presents a scalable simulation method, called time-adaptive numerical simulation, which can be used to represent dynamics of high-speed networks using fluid-based models. The new method dynamically adjusts the size of a time step for a numerical solver which solves a system of differential equations representing dynamics of protocols and nodes' behaviors. The simulation results show that the time-adaptive-method reduces the computational time while achieving the same accuracy compared to that of a fixed step-size …
The Role Of Online Trading Communities In Managing Internet Auction Fraud, Cecil Eng Huang Chua, Jonathan Wareham, Daniel Robey
The Role Of Online Trading Communities In Managing Internet Auction Fraud, Cecil Eng Huang Chua, Jonathan Wareham, Daniel Robey
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
Internet auctions demonstrate that advances in information technologies can create more efficient venues of exchange between large numbers of traders. However, the growth of Internet auctions has been accompanied by a corresponding growth in Internet auction fraud. Much extant research on Internet auction fraud in the information systems literature is conducted at the individual level of analysis, thereby limiting its focus to the choices of individual traders or trading dyads. The criminology literature, in contrast, recognizes that social and community factors are equally important influences on the perpetration and prevention of crime. We employ social disorganization theory as a lens …

Research Issues And Overview Of Economic Models In Mobile-P2p Networks, Anirban Mondal, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Masaru Kitsuregawa
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
The mobile-P2P paradigm is becoming increasingly popular. Existing mobile-P2P solutions largely do not consider economic incentive models for enticing peer participation without eliminating free-riders and for effectively handling mobile resource constraints such as energy. This paper presents an executive summary of the existing solutions and an overview of some of the important issues for handling problems in mobile-P2P networks using economic models. We also present our perspectives on building 'real' mobile-P2P applications using economic models. © 2007 IEEE.

Transmission Scheduling In Sensor Networks Via Directed Edge Coloring, Maggie Xiaioyan Cheng, Li Yin
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a transmission scheduling scheme in sensor networks. Each node is assigned a list of time slots to use for unicasting and broadcast communication. the algorithm employs edge coloring on a directed graph for transmission scheduling. It is different from previous works that use vertex coloring of a graph for node scheduling, or those that use edge coloring of undirected graphs for link scheduling. the proposed algorithm uses the least number of time slots compared to its counterparts and it avoids both the hidden terminal problem and the exposed terminal problem in both unicast and broadcast communication. ©2007 …
An Estimation Of Distribution Improved Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm, Raghavendra V. Kulkarni, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
An Estimation Of Distribution Improved Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm, Raghavendra V. Kulkarni, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
PSO is a powerful evolutionary algorithm used for finding global solution to a multidimensional problem. Particles in PSO tend to re-explore already visited bad solution regions of search space because they do not learn as a whole. This is avoided by restricting particles into promising regions through probabilistic modeling of the archive of best solutions. This paper presents hybrids of estimation of distribution algorithm and two PSO variants. These algorithms are tested on benchmark functions having high dimensionalities. Results indicate that the methods strengthen the global optimization abilities of PSO and therefore, serve as attractive choices to determine solutions to …

The paper contains a novel mechanism for full wave electromagnetic simulation of complicated inhomogeneous structures, such as on-chip interconnects, IC packaging, antennas, and scattering objects. It uses only Equivalent Principle based EFIE instead of both EFIE and MFIE to establish the surface integral equations for practical inhomogeneous structure so that a much more simplified formulation process is needed in the EM simulation procedure. To overcome the numerical error of K operator in the formulation, a new analytical solution to the K operator for general full-wave integral equations is provided. Numerical results are demonstrated to verify the proposed algorithm. © 2007 …

This paper examines the experience of Radio Elshinta in Jakarta with people-initiated journalism long before the descriptor “citizen journalism” emerged as a topic of research in academic level. Elshinta has 100,000 listeners, most with no formal training in journalism, contributing to its news broadcast since 2000. This study compares Elshinta’s experience with a popular online citizen media portal Ohmynews in South Korea and attempts to identify the catalysts of ‘citizen journalism’ in the two countries. The case study is complemented by interviews with journalists from Ohmynews and Elshinta. The study concludes that despite the low penetration of internet in Indonesia, …
The Sunset Of "Quality Control" In Modern Trademark Licensing, Irene Calboli
The Sunset Of "Quality Control" In Modern Trademark Licensing, Irene Calboli
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Historically, based on the premise that trademark protection is about consumer welfare, trademark law has allowed trademark licensing only as long as licensors control the quality of the products bearing the licensed marks. Ever since its adoption, however, this rule has been difficult to enforce because it hinges on a concept that is ambiguous and difficult to frame in a legal context: quality control. Unsurprisingly, the consequence has been inconsistent case law and much uncertainty as to what represents valid licensing. In addition, in the past decades, courts have proven increasingly reticent to strictly apply this rule and have declared …

Geographic Decomposition Of Inequality In Health And Wealth: Evidence From Cambodia, Tomoki Fujii
Research Collection School Of Economics
The small-area estimation developed by Elbers, Lanjouw and Lanjouw (2002, 2003), in which a census and a survey are combined to produce the estimates of welfare measures for small geographic areas, has become a standard tool for poverty analysis in developing countries. The small-area estimates are typically plotted on a map, which are commonly called a poverty map. Poverty maps proved useful for policy analysis and formulation, and have become increasingly popular among policy-makers and researchers. In Cambodia, poverty maps have been used by various international organizations, ministries and non-governmental organizations for analyzing the poverty situations for their operation areas, …

We consider a deterministic evolutionary model where players form expectations about future play. Players are not fully rational and have expectations that change over time in response to current payoffs and feedback from the past. We provide a complete characterization of the qualitative dynamics so induced for a two strategies population game, and relate our findings to standard evolutionary dynamics and equilibrium selection when agents have rational forward looking expectations.

Singapore's Exchange Rate Policy: Some Implementation Issues, Hwee Kwan Chow
Research Collection School Of Economics
Reflecting the small open nature of its economy, Singapore has adopted an exchange rate-centered monetary policy framework since 1981. The exchange rate regime in Singapore is an intermediate regime that follows the basket-band-crawl system. With this managed float system, the MAS has successfully deterred speculators from attacking the domestic currency for most of the past three decades. At the same time, the flexibility accorded by the managed float system aided Singapore in escaping from the 1997–1998 Asian crisis relatively unscathed. In order to advance our understanding of the hitherto successful operation of Singapore's exchange rate policy, we examine the following …
Long Run Covariance Matrices For Fractionally Integrated Processes, Peter C. B. Phillips, Sik Kim Chang
Long Run Covariance Matrices For Fractionally Integrated Processes, Peter C. B. Phillips, Sik Kim Chang
Research Collection School Of Economics
An asymptotic expansion is given for the autocovariance matrix of a vector of stationary long-memory processes with memory parameters d ∈ [0,½). The theory is then applied to deliver formulas for the long-run covariance matrices of multivariate time series with long memory.Phillips acknowledges partial support from a Kelly Fellowship and from the NSF under grant SES 04-142254. This may be proved directly using a Fourier integral asymptotic expansion when the spectrum of the short-memory component is analytic.

Nonstationary Discrete Choice: A Corrigendum And Addendum, Peter C. B. Phillips, Sainan Jin, Ling Hu
Research Collection School Of Economics
We correct the limit theory presented in an earlier paper by Hu and Phillips [2004a. Nonstationary discrete choice. Journal of Econometrics 120, 103-138] for nonstationary time series discrete choice models with multiple choices and thresholds. The new limit theory shows that, in contrast to the binary choice model with nonstationary regressors and a zero threshold where there are dual rates of convergence (n1/4 and n3/4), all parameters including the thresholds converge at the rate n3/4. The presence of nonzero thresholds therefore materially affects rates of convergence. Dual rates of convergence reappear when stationary variables are present in the system. Some …

The asymptotic local power of various panel unit root tests is investigated. The (Gaussian) power envelope is obtained under homogeneous and heterogeneous alternatives. The envelope is compared with the asymptotic power functions for the pooled t-test, the Ploberger and Phillips [2002. Optimal testing for unit roots in panel data. Mimeo] test, and a point optimal test in neighborhoods of unity that are of order n-1/4T-1 and n-1/2T-1, depending on whether or not incidental trends are extracted from the panel data. In the latter case, when the alternative hypothesis is homogeneous across individuals, it is shown that the point optimal test …
