Reading The Pink Locker Room: On Football Culture And Title Ix, Erin E. Buzuvis Oct 2007

Reading The Pink Locker Room: On Football Culture And Title Ix, Erin E. Buzuvis

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This article examines the public controversy that erupted after local media reported on a comment I made about the University of Iowa's decision to renovate the football stadium's visiting team locker room entirely in pink. I submitted my statement in response to the University Steering Committee on NCAA Certification's request for feedback on a draft report and suggested that the "joke" behind the pink d6cor traded in sexist and homophobic values. As such, I concluded that it belonged in the comprehensive analysis of gender equity that the committee was preparing. I immediately received hundreds of hateful e-mails and was the …

Who Is To Shame? Narratives Of Neonaticide, Susan Ayres

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

In seventeenth-century England, single women who killed their newborns were believed to have acted to hide their shame. They were prosecuted under the 1624 Concealment Law and punished by death. This harsh response eventually evolved into a more humane and sympathetic one, as shown by the increasing number of acquittals in the late eighteenth century and by the sharp drop of prosecutions in the late nineteenth century. Then, in 1922, England passed the Infanticide Act, amended in 1938, which provided that a mother who killed her child would be prosecuted for manslaughter, not murder. Today, the great majority of women …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

I suppose it might seem self-assuming to supply an introduction stemming from my own situation when I should be contextualizing the contents of the current crop of essays. Rather than a unifying discourse, though, two class discussions might offer entry points to a disparate collection of otherwise unrelated essays. First, I gave my class an essay assignment which asked them to consider Leon Ferrari's work, Civilisacion Occidentale y Christiana (1965) to see whether or not a contemporary viewer, born after 1986, might find a one or two intertexts in a work of art which features the figure of …

From Postmodernism To Post-Tradition: The End Of Theory In The Age Of Global Conservatism, Said Graiouid

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This paper explores possible routes of reflecting on non-Western forms of social organization. Taking Morocco as its central site of study, the paper argues that fixed conceptual interpretations cannot provide a constructive understanding of a societal organization in a state of flux. The geographical position of Morocco at the tip of the Mediterranean rim and the country's geopolitical role as a mediator between the West and the Orient create a push and pull social dynamics which has generated conflicts, contradictions but also openings and possibilities. The paper proposes the concept "post-tradition" as a possible theoretical and methodological framework within and …

Impact Of Culture On International Business Negotiation: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Taiwan, Hong Kong, And Mainland China, Jung-Tsung Tu Oct 2007

Impact Of Culture On International Business Negotiation: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Taiwan, Hong Kong, And Mainland China, Jung-Tsung Tu

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Each year international business amounts to more than $1 trillion U.S. dollars (WTO, 2005). Both foreign investment and international trade are growing substantially, causing increasing interdependence of national economies as well as furthering the globalization of companies. Presently, Greater China's economy holds an increasingly large influence on the world. Despite the enthusiasm for increased economic exchange, many people have found that cultural differences have hindered their ability to efficiently conduct business due to their lack of understanding of the cultural differences among Chinese citizens living in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China. People engaged in the negotiations of agreements in …

The Multiethnic Placement Act: Threat To Foster Child Safety And Well-Being?, David J. Herring Oct 2007

The Multiethnic Placement Act: Threat To Foster Child Safety And Well-Being?, David J. Herring

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Despite the efforts of public officials to reduce the time children spend in foster care, many children live in foster homes for a substantial portion of their childhoods. In fact, a child placed in a foster home may remain in that home for an extended period, with a significant possibility of remaining there permanently. In light of this situation, the decision to place a child in a particular foster home is extremely important.

The federal Multiethnic Placement Act ("MEPA ") significantly affects foster care placement decisions. This law expressly prohibits public child welfare agencies from delaying or denying a child's …

Atua Of The Aga: A Comparison Of Ancestor Worship In The Highlands Of Bali And Polynesia, Jamison Liang Oct 2007

Atua Of The Aga: A Comparison Of Ancestor Worship In The Highlands Of Bali And Polynesia, Jamison Liang

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The purpose of this study is to understand the practice of ancestor worship among the Bali Aga village of Sukawana and its relation to how its inhabitants trace their origins. When did their ancestors arrive in Sukawana and where did they come from? Did any of their descendents continue to migrate across Indonesia? And how do the Bali Aga practice ancestor reverence through the use of shrines and temples—tangible evidence—in their villages? The responses to these questions provided a platform for comparison to current anthropological, linguistic, and archaeological theories in order to understand how locally constructed truth in Sukawana related …

Shari'ah. Islamic Law And Arab Business Ethics, Frederick V. Perry Oct 2007

Shari'ah. Islamic Law And Arab Business Ethics, Frederick V. Perry

Connecticut Journal of International Law

What is law, and what function does it have in our lives? Many people and many cultures answer those questions differently.' Ethics, among other things, are concerned with judging things to be good or bad, especially behavior.2 Islam and its teachings, particularly Islamic Law, as this article will attempt to describe, informs and encompasses all of the activities, mundane and spiritual of the devout Muslim, including how he or she views ethical responsibilities. The use of the term "law" as in "Islamic Law" does not necessarily imply national or state sanctioned, legislated statutes. A handful of countries rule themselves nearly …

Cross-Cultural Differences In Learning And Education: Stereotypes, Myths And Realities, Gerhard Apfelthaler, Katrin Hansen, Stephan Keuchel, Christa Mueller, Martin Neubauer, Siow-Heng Ong, Nirundon Tapachai Oct 2007

Cross-Cultural Differences In Learning And Education: Stereotypes, Myths And Realities, Gerhard Apfelthaler, Katrin Hansen, Stephan Keuchel, Christa Mueller, Martin Neubauer, Siow-Heng Ong, Nirundon Tapachai

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Despite the fact that both learning styles and cross-cultural differences have been important research topics for decades, surprisingly little work has been done on comparisons of learning behaviour across cultures and its impact for teachers working in culturally mixed settings. This chapter is based on a research project funded by the European Union seeking to provide fresh knowledge on cross-national differences in attitudes towards learning of students from selected countries. It reports on the results from Austria, Germany, Singapore and Thailand and outlines some of the implications for teaching in higher education.

Trotter Review

There's some buzz about Bill O'Reilly's racially ignorant remarks about Sylvia's Restaurant in Harlem. But the darling of left-liberal media jokesters, Jon Stewart, had a good time on his Friday, September 21 show, first, at the expense of President Bush, and then at the expense of Nelson Mandela. Blogs are cheerleading the way Stewart caught Bush in another dumb statement — that Nelson Mandela is dead. The only comments I find on the web are kudos for Stewart's bashing of Bush. No mention of Stewart animalizing Mandela with sounds that echo the mumbo-jumbo sneer at nonwhite speech, or of his …

A Computational Model Of Culture-Specific Conversational Behavior, Dusan Jan, David Herrera, Bilyana Martinovski, David G. Novick, David Traum Sep 2007

A Computational Model Of Culture-Specific Conversational Behavior, Dusan Jan, David Herrera, Bilyana Martinovski, David G. Novick, David Traum

Departmental Papers (CS)

This paper presents a model for simulating cultural differences in the conversational behavior of virtual agents. The model provides parameters for differences in proxemics, gaze and overlap in turn taking. We present a review of literature on these factors and show results of a study where native speakers of North American English, Mexican Spanish and Arabic were asked to rate the realism of the simulations generated based on different cultural parameters with respect to their culture.

Students Learn About Documentation Throughout Their Teacher Education Program, Carolyn P. Edwards, Susan Churchill, Mary Gabriel, Ruth Heaton, Julie Jones-Branch, Christine Marvin, Michelle Rupiper

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Study groups and learning circles can offer a systematic way for early childhood teachers to interact about their work and create a culture of professional development. This paper describes how faculty systematically followed a collaborative co-inquiry process in order to improve a new early childhood interdisciplinary teacher preparation program. The team met on a regular basis throughout one academic year, with the stated objective of infusing observation/documentation knowledge and skills in a coherent and systematic way throughout the students’ program of studies. The group created a template of the cycle of inquiry, which could apply to all courses, and analyzed …
