Weighted Additive Criterion For Linear Dimension Reduction, Jing Peng, Stefan Robila Dec 2007

Weighted Additive Criterion For Linear Dimension Reduction, Jing Peng, Stefan Robila

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) for dimension reduction has been applied to a wide variety of face recognition tasks. However, it has two major problems. First, it suffers from the small sample size problem when dimensionality is greater than the sample size. Second, it creates subspaces that favor well separated classes over those that are not. In this paper, we propose a simple weighted criterion for linear dimension reduction that addresses the above two problems associated with LDA. In addition, there are well established numerical procedures such as semi-definite programming for efficiently computing the proposed criterion. We demonstrate the efficacy of …

Grid Computing For Hyperspectral Data Processing, Stefan A. Robila, Nicholas A. Senedzuk Dec 2007

Grid Computing For Hyperspectral Data Processing, Stefan A. Robila, Nicholas A. Senedzuk

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We investigate the use of a flexible grid architecture for hyperspectral image processing. Recording data in tens or hundreds of narrow contiguous spectral intervals, hyperspectral data outperform multispectral imagery by allowing the detection of relatively small differences in material composition and of targets occupying a surface smaller than the one covered by a pixel (called subpixel targets). However, with increased spatial and spectral resolution, processing such data often leads to computational costs prohibitive to regular computer systems. While distributed or parallel computing are often found as solutions, many current configurations are still unable to reach the computational complexity level that …

Gateshead Revisited: Perceptual Simulators And Fields Of Meaning In The Analysis Of Metaphors, L. David Ritchie Dec 2007

Gateshead Revisited: Perceptual Simulators And Fields Of Meaning In The Analysis Of Metaphors, L. David Ritchie

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

In an extension and partial reformulation of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), Ritchie (2003, 2004, 2006) proposed that the linguistic expressions cited as evidence of complex conceptual metaphors can be parsimoniously interpreted in terms of perceptual simulators (Barsalou, 1999), often within extended fields of meaning, which may be but are not necessarily anchored in underlying conceptual metaphors. Cameron (2003, 2007) added substance and precision to the focal concept of communicative context, and showed how metaphors can be analyzed both as part of an overall pattern of figurative language in a communicative event. In this essay a series of …

Family Law Federalism: Divorce And The Constitution, Ann Laquer Estin Dec 2007

Family Law Federalism: Divorce And The Constitution, Ann Laquer Estin

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

American divorce law was transformed by the Supreme Court in a series of decisions beginning with Williams v. North Carolina in 1942. These constitutional full faith and credit cases resolved a long-standing federalism problem by redefining the scope of state power over marital status. With these decisions, the Court shifted from an analysis based on the competing interests of different states to an approach that highlighted the individual interests of the parties involved. This change fundamentally altered state power over the family by extending to individuals greater control of their marital status. In the process, the Court cleared a path …

Interpreting The Fourteenth Amendment: Two Don'ts And Three Dos, Garrett Epps Dec 2007

Interpreting The Fourteenth Amendment: Two Don'ts And Three Dos, Garrett Epps

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

A sophisticated reading of the legislative record of the framing of the Fourteenth Amendment can provide courts and scholars with some general interpretive principles to guide their application of the Amendment to current legal problems. The author argues that two common legal conceptions about the Amendment are, in fact, misconceptions. The first is that the Amendment was chiefly concerned with the immediate situation of freed slaves in the former slave states. Instead, he argues, the legislative record suggests that the framers were broadly concerned with the rights not only of freed slaves but also of foreign-born immigrants in the North …

Grass Phylogeny And Classification: Conflict Of Morphology And Molecules, Bryan K. Simon Dec 2007

Grass Phylogeny And Classification: Conflict Of Morphology And Molecules, Bryan K. Simon

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

The grass family (Poaceae) has been recognized as a unique lineage for more than 200 years, based initially on characters of inflorescence and spikelet morphology and corroborated by anatomical and other features in the latter half of the twentieth century. There have been a number of attempts to derive a phylogeny of sections of the family from structural (morphological and anatomical) characters. However, more recently the Grass Phylogeny Working Group (2001) applied cladistic principles to the whole family using molecular and structural characters. This study produced a single most-parsimonious tree from six molecular sequence data sets, chloroplast restriction site data, …

Eragrostis (Poaceae): Monophyly And Infrageneric Classification, Amanda L. Ingram, Jeff J. Doyle Dec 2007

Eragrostis (Poaceae): Monophyly And Infrageneric Classification, Amanda L. Ingram, Jeff J. Doyle

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Eragrostis is a large genus in subfamily Chloridoideae of Poaceae. Recent phylogenetic analyses have suggested that the genus may not be monophyletic, that some of its segregate genera may be better placed within Eragrostis, and that current infrageneric classifications may not represent monophyletic groups. We have used molecular sequence data from the plastid locus rps16 and the nuclear gene waxy from a broad sample of Eragrostis species and representatives of six of the seven segregate genera to address these issues. We found that Eragrostis is monophyletic with the inclusion of several of the segregates, including Acamptoclados, Diandrochloa …

Teaching Time Savers: The Exam Practically Wrote Itself!, Michael E. Orrison Jr. Dec 2007

Teaching Time Savers: The Exam Practically Wrote Itself!, Michael E. Orrison Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

When I first started teaching, creating an exam for my upper division courses was a genuinely exciting process. The material felt fresh and relatively unexplored (at least by me), and I remember often feeling pleasantly overwhelmed with what seemed like a vast supply of intriguing and engrossing exam-ready problems. Crafting the perfect exam, one that was noticeably inviting, exceedingly fair, and unavoidably illuminating, was a real joy.

Os-Level Virtualization And Its Applications, Yang Yu Dec 2007

Os-Level Virtualization And Its Applications, Yang Yu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

OS-level virtualization is a technology that partitions the operating system to create multiple isolated Virtual Machines (VM). An OS-level VM is a virtual execution environment that can be forked instantly from the base operating environment. OS-level virtualization has been widely used to improve security, manageability and availability of today’s complex software environment, with small runtime and resource overhead, and with minimal changes to the existing computing infrastructure. A main challenge with OS-level virtualization is how to achieve strong isolation among VMs that share a common base OS. In this dissertation we study major OS components of Windows NT kernel, and …

Detection Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls In The Rio Grande Basin Above Cochiti Dam: Sources & Significance, Anthony D. Edwards Dec 2007

Detection Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls In The Rio Grande Basin Above Cochiti Dam: Sources & Significance, Anthony D. Edwards

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been detected with increasing frequency in water and fish tissue samples in the Rio Grande Basin above Cochiti Dam (RGBACD), which correlates with the use of improved analytical methods for quantifying PCBs. Levels of PCBs identified in some fish have exceeded levels considered safe for human consumption, resulting in a Fish Consumption Advisory' for Abiquiu and Cochiti Reservoirs and the Rio Grande from Pojoaque Creek to Frijoles Canyon (Bandelier National Monument). In June of 2007, the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) listed seven water bodies in the RGBACD as impaired due to elevated concentrations of PCBs …

Measuring The Impacts Of Employer-Based Transportation Demand Management Programs On An Interstate Corridor, Nevine Labib Georggi, Phil Winters, Sachin Rai, Liren Zhou Dec 2007

Measuring The Impacts Of Employer-Based Transportation Demand Management Programs On An Interstate Corridor, Nevine Labib Georggi, Phil Winters, Sachin Rai, Liren Zhou

Journal of Public Transportation

This article is based on a study that analyzed the impacts of employer-based transportation demand management (TDM) strategies and the performance of a transportation system. The study simulated the effects of the Washington State Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) programs implemented by 189 employers on an 8.6-mile segment of I-5 in the Seattle downtown area. This comprehensive dataset included before/after employer trip reduction plans and the origins/destinations of nearly 63,000 commuters working for those 189 employers. The current performance of the selected network was compared to that of a scenario with reduced vehicle trips due to CTR programs added back onto …

User Perceptions Of Private Paratransit Operation In Indonesia, Tri Basuki Joewono, Hisashi Kubota Dec 2007

User Perceptions Of Private Paratransit Operation In Indonesia, Tri Basuki Joewono, Hisashi Kubota

Journal of Public Transportation

In this article, public perception is expressed by user participation in rating the mode’s condition and loyalty to it. The aim of this research is to explore user perceptions of paratransit (i.e., jitney) operation, a privately owned and operated mode of transport, regarding quality of service, frequency of negative experience, and loyalty. This article examines the condition of paratransit from the user’s point of view to balance the judgment from other stakeholders. The findings from path analysis reveal the important determinants that influence overall satisfaction. Moreover, path analysis supports the hypothesis that this mode will still be relevant in the …

Niche Partitioning Between Eisenia Foetida (Lumbricidae) And Native Earthworms In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2007, Christine Askham Dec 2007

Niche Partitioning Between Eisenia Foetida (Lumbricidae) And Native Earthworms In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2007, Christine Askham

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

With an increased susceptibility to invasive species due to deforestation, exotic species in tropical rainforests are quickly gaining potential to alter these already disappearing ecosystems. This study examined whether the exotic earthworm Eisenia foetida (Lumbricidae) has the potential to become an invasive species. Niche preference for level of organic soil content, level of soil texture, and humidity level was tested between native and exotic species in Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica. There was a significant difference for organic soil content level between native earthworms and E. foetida. This significant difference was present both when the exotics and natives were tested alone …

The cases include those that were heard by the Georgia Supreme Court on interim appeal and direct appeal,1 and discussion is limited to claims which present new issues of law, refine existing law, or are otherwise instructive. This Article does not discuss holdings in capital cases that are common to all criminal appeals because these are discussed elsewhere in this Survey.

Administrative Law, Martin M. Wilson, Jennifer A. Blackburn Dec 2007

Administrative Law, Martin M. Wilson, Jennifer A. Blackburn

Mercer Law Review

This Article surveys administrative law developments in appellate cases from June 1, 2006 through May 31, 2007. Only cases from the Georgia Supreme Court and the Georgia Court of Appeals have been reviewed. As compared to prior years, the number of cases in which administrative law principles played a significant role showed no upward spike. There are many other topics that concern elements of administrative law, but this Article does not address cases containing those specific subject matter topics. There is likely some duplication of cases among the subject matter topics, but only the administrative law elements are emphasized in …

Domestic Relations, Barry B. Mcgough, Gregory R. Miller Dec 2007

Domestic Relations, Barry B. Mcgough, Gregory R. Miller

Mercer Law Review

This survey period saw domestic relations law continue to evolve through new legislation and new case law. The 2006 Georgia legislature made dramatic changes to the child support calculations that took effect in 2007. The 2007 Georgia legislature has turned its focus to child custody issues, including passing laws requiring parenting plans in custody, allowing attorney fee awards, and allowing for direct appeals in child custody cases. The Georgia Supreme Court continued to accept nonfrivolous appeals in divorce cases, and as a result, the appellate courts have been able to give guidance to those interested in domestic relations law.

Insurance, Bradley S. Wolff, Stephen L. Cotter, Stephen M. Schatz Dec 2007

Insurance, Bradley S. Wolff, Stephen L. Cotter, Stephen M. Schatz

Mercer Law Review

The Georgia Supreme Court reviewed, and reversed, two cases featured prominently in last year's Insurance survey article, and it also held a key provision of tort reform preempted by federal law.

The Georgia Supreme Court reversed the decision in Ryder Integrated Logistics, Inc. v. BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc. and held that an agreement to name another as an additional insured could not be used to salvage an invalid indemnification clause in the parties' contract. The legislature amended Official Code of Georgia Annotated ("O.C.G.A.") section 13-8-2 to help avoid this type of litigation in the future.

However, both appellate courts continued …
