Legislation Only Way To Get Eyewitness Id Reform, Donald E. Wilkes Jr. Oct 2007

Legislation Only Way To Get Eyewitness Id Reform, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.

Popular Media

LaGrange Police Chief Louis M. Dekmar’s opinion piece in the Athens Banner-Herald last Friday, October 5, 2007, opposing proposed legislation to reform Georgia police eyewitness identification procedures, rests on two unwarrantable assertions: more research is needed, and rather than passing laws we should trust the police themselves to make any needed reforms.

Addressing The Needs Of Children Of Offenders:The 4-H Life Model, Lynna J. Lawson, Robert C. Wilkerson, Tammy Gillespie, Elizabeth G. Dunn

Journal of Youth Development

4-H LIFE represents a promising approach to addressing the needs of children of offenders and their caregivers. The 4-H Living Interactive Family Education (LIFE) Program was established in 1999 at the Potosi Correctional Center, a maximum security prison. 4-H LIFE is an enhanced or therapeutic visitation program with three key components: 1. parent engagement 2. parent education 3. 4-H activities for children of offenders, led by the incarcerated parents. Since inception, 141 youths between the ages of 5 and 18 have participated; 59 incarcerated fathers and 106 caregivers have also been engaged at PCC. Program evaluations suggest that parent-child outcomes …

Time Resolution Of Collapse Events During The Progation Of Ultraviolet Filaaments, Teresa J. Fondren Oct 2007

Time Resolution Of Collapse Events During The Progation Of Ultraviolet Filaaments, Teresa J. Fondren

Theses and Dissertations

Long distance propagation, or filamentation, of short, intense laser pulses is suggested to be possible through the balance of two effects: self-focusing, when a nonlinear index of refraction of air is induced by high intensities, and de-focusing, due to the plasma created by the pulse. Applications for filamentation include areas such as remote sensing and directed energy. A split-step spectral propagation simulation is used to model the behavior of a high intensity ultraviolet laser pulse propagating through air. Convergence of femtosecond duration collapses that form on the leading edge of the pulse in the time domain is achieved with an …

Inequality, Polarization And Violent Conflict: The Maoist Insurgency In Nepal, Mani Nepal, Alok K. Bohara, Kishore Gawande

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

We empirically examine this association between inequality and conflict. The setting is the Maoist rebellion in Nepal that has claimed thousands of lives since it began in 1996. The regional variations across villages in Nepal afford a rich experiment, without having to use crosscountry data, for exploring the nature of association between conflict and inequality.

Political Predictions In Nepal, Aditya Shrestha

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Is it safe to make political predictions in a country like Nepal? It is not; but some people do it and come out right. What makes them guess correctly is something different. Nonetheless they cannot be dismissed in their claims with evidences.

Quasi-Local Linear Momentum In Black-Hole Binaries, Badri Krishnan, Carlos O. Lousto, Yosef Zlochower Oct 2007

Quasi-Local Linear Momentum In Black-Hole Binaries, Badri Krishnan, Carlos O. Lousto, Yosef Zlochower

Articles

We propose a quasi-local formula for the linear momentum of black-hole horizons inspired by the formalism of quasi-local horizons. We test this formula using two complementary configurations: (i) by calculating the large orbital linear momentum of the two black holes in an unequal-mass, zero-spin, quasi-circular binary and (ii) by calculating the very small recoil momentum imparted to the remnant of the head-on collision of an equal-mass, anti-aligned-spin binary. We obtain results consistent with the horizon trajectory in the orbiting case, and consistent with the net radiated linear momentum for the much smaller head-on recoil velocity.

Module 9: The Learning Cycle Oct 2007

Module 9: The Learning Cycle

Module 9: The Learning Cycle

It is quite clear in the research related to the work of Piaget that persons need many years of practice in meaningful understanding and manipulating relationships with the aid of concrete-empirical props. Gradually they develop greater facility in performing these operations and they are able to perform the same operations without relying upon props. In other words, "hands-on", "eyes-on" experiences are essential prerequisites for the development of advanced reasoning abilities.

On the basis of this developmental theory, classroom activities may play a central role in the improvement of student reasoning. Given the possible importance of classroom experiences , does it …

Module 8: Self-Regulation

Module 8: Self-Regulation

How can students be made more aware of their own reasoning? This question identifies one aspect of formal thought. It must be answered if students are to proceed to formal operational thought by self-regulation, the process whereby an individual advances from one stage of development to the next. We have alluded to self-regulation in several of the earlier modules but concentrated on the characteristic reasoning patterns associated with each stage. In this module we shall describe self-regulation in detail.

Teaching Social Influence: Resources And Exercises From The Field Of Communication, John S. Seiter, R. H. Gass Oct 2007

Teaching Social Influence: Resources And Exercises From The Field Of Communication, John S. Seiter, R. H. Gass

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Effective teachers know that when students are engaged in active learning, they learn more, retain it longer, apply it better, and continue to learn (Weimer, 1993). One way to promote such learning is through the use of innovative classroom activities that lead students to understand, interpret, and/or apply information. In that spirit, educators in the field of communication have developed an array of activities and demonstrations for promoting active learning in students of social influence. To facilitate the use of such activities, this article uses an annotated bibliography format to review over 30 published articles designed by communication teachers to …
