Archaeology And The Sense Of History In J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth, Deborah Sabo Oct 2007

Archaeology And The Sense Of History In J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth, Deborah Sabo

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Looks at ruins and other archaeological sites in Middle-earth and their place in the cultural history of its various races, and by reflection, the place of archaeology in our own cultural memories. Considers Lake-town, the Barrow-Downs, Weathertop, and other locations to show differing attitudes toward and uses of the past.

Collision Broadening Using Alkali-Filled, Hollow Core Fibers, Luke P. Rodgers Oct 2007

Collision Broadening Using Alkali-Filled, Hollow Core Fibers, Luke P. Rodgers

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research was to demonstrate the possibility of collision broadening in a cesium-filled, hollow-core fiber as an alternative to the proven technique of pressure broadening. Theoretically, alkali electrons should relax from the 2P3/2 to the 2P1/2 level and the absorption spectrum should collisionally broaden due to the presence of fiber walls, as opposed to the more common pressure broadening method. An absorption dip located at 852.34nm was recorded in a pressure broadened comparison leg. This data was used as a baseline during analysis of the fiber leg's data. While the fiber was successfully …

Airway Strain During Mechanical Ventilation In An Intact Animal Model, Scott W. Sinclair, Robert C. Molthen, Steven Thomas Haworth, Christopher A. Dawson, Christopher M. Waters Oct 2007

Airway Strain During Mechanical Ventilation In An Intact Animal Model, Scott W. Sinclair, Robert C. Molthen, Steven Thomas Haworth, Christopher A. Dawson, Christopher M. Waters

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Rationale: Mechanical ventilation with large tidal volumes causes ventilator-induced lung injury in animal models. Little direct evidence exists regarding the deformation of airways in vivo during mechanical ventilation, or in the presence of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP).

Objectives: To measure airway strain and to estimate airway wall tension during mechanical ventilation in an intact animal model.

Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized and mechanically ventilated with tidal volumes of 6, 12, and 25 cm3/kg with and without 10–cm H2O PEEP. Real-time tantalum bronchograms were obtained for each condition, using microfocal X-ray imaging. Images were …

Ubiquitous Low-Velocity Layer Atop The 410-Km Discontinuity In The Northern Rocky Mountains, John Jasbinsek, Kenneth Dueker Oct 2007

Ubiquitous Low-Velocity Layer Atop The 410-Km Discontinuity In The Northern Rocky Mountains, John Jasbinsek, Kenneth Dueker

Physics

Receiver functions from three 30-station IRIS-PASSCAL small-aperture arrays (2–15 km station spacing) operated for 10 months each in the northern Rocky Mountains show a ubiquitous negative polarity P to S conversion just preceding the 410-km discontinuity arrival. Data from the three arrays were sorted into NW, SE, and SW back-azimuth quadrants and stacked to form nine quadrant stacks. Remarkably, the negative polarity arrival (NPA) is apparent in 8 of the 9 quadrant stacks, with 7 of the 8 having well-correlated waveforms. Each quadrant stack also contains clear P to S conversions from the 410- and 660-km discontinuities. Moveout analysis shows …

Reading First Annual Report Year 3, Malinda Mary Murphy, Guy Trainin, Oren Yagil, Kristin Javorsky, Emily H. Hayden

Research and Evaluation in Education, Technology, Art, and Design

Reading First is a Federal grant program aimed at improving basic literacy skills in kindergarten through third grade in schools identified as underachieving. In the third year of implementation we find that achievement in second and third grade is improving. Round two schools are moving faster than round one schools did in their first year. Gaps for most at-risk populations are decreasing, however, gaps for students in special education are actually growing. There is clear change in teacher beliefs and teacher practice that is strongly associated with changes in student achievement. Finally Reading First is having an impact beyond Reading …

We present a measurement of the W-boson mass using 200pb-1 of data collected in pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV by the CDF II detector at run II of the Fermilab Tevatron. With a sample of 63964 W→eν candidates and 51128 W→μν candidates, we measure MW= 80413±34stat±34syst=80413±48MeV/c2. This is the most precise single measurement of the W-boson mass to date. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

Second-Order Quasinormal Mode Of The Schwarzschild Black Hole, Hiroyuki Nakano, Kunihito Ioka Oct 2007

Second-Order Quasinormal Mode Of The Schwarzschild Black Hole, Hiroyuki Nakano, Kunihito Ioka

Articles

We formulate and calculate the second order quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of a Schwarzschild black hole (BH). Gravitational wave (GW) from a distorted BH, so called ringdown, is well understood as QNMs in general relativity. Since QNMs from binary BH mergers will be detected with high signal-to-noise ratio by GW detectors, it is also possible to detect the second perturbative order of QNMs, generated by nonlinear gravitational interaction near the BH. In the BH perturbation approach, we derive the master Zerilli equation for the metric perturbation to second order and explicitly regularize it at the horizon and spatial infinity. We numerically …
