Predicting Physicians' Intention To Measure Body Mass Index And Assessing Their Identification And Evaluation Practices In Overweight Children And Adolescents, Rahul Khanna

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

One health challenge receiving a lot of attention today is childhood obesity. Numerous public and professional organizations recommend that physicians periodically measure BMI in children and adolescents. In addition, guidelines recommend medical evaluation of overweight children and adolescents. However, studies have shown an inconsistent use of body mass index (BMI). This study uses the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to identify factors that explain physicians' intention to measure BMI in children and adolescents. Salient beliefs associated with intention were compared between intenders and nonintenders. The study also determines how physicians identify and evaluate …

We also address the problem of evaluating the quality of segmented image by designing an automated segmentation evaluator.;For image segmentation, we first apply a mathematical morphology operator to highlight the desired objects and suppress the others, and then threshold the resulting image to separate the desired objects from the background. We …

Multiagent Approach For Power System Reconfiguration, Pinak Tulpule Jan 2007

Multiagent Approach For Power System Reconfiguration, Pinak Tulpule

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this thesis is to develop an agent based reconfiguration algorithm for power system application with termination detection and to provide communication architecture for these agents. The underlying maximum flow algorithm based on graph theory has proven the concept of autonomous distributed reconfiguration using multiagent systems. The new rule-based algorithm takes into account the requirement of bidirectional power flows, and special power routing for DC devices. Even though the algorithm is self-stabilizing and agents become idle after finite time, implementation of the solution within the actual power system requires that all agents be in an idle state. The …

Wilderness Handrails: The Evolution Of Search And Rescue In Yosemite National Park, Christopher Edward Johnson Jan 2007

Wilderness Handrails: The Evolution Of Search And Rescue In Yosemite National Park, Christopher Edward Johnson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The evolution of search and rescue in Yosemite after World War II highlighted the ways in which park users and administrators negotiated the contentious discourses of technology, tourism, and wilderness in the modern national parks movement. The establishment of a technologically sophisticated search and rescue force provided free by the federal government blurred the lines between preservation and use in national park policy by allowing administrators to resist development and support wilderness while still providing a safe environment for recreation. The co-evolution of rock climbing and rescue also illuminated the resulting tensions between individual freedom, social responsibility, and class in …

T-Theory And Analysis Of Online Algorithms, James Oravec

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Several advancements in Online Algorithms can be credited to T-theory, a field of discrete mathematics. T-theory has aided in the development of several online algorithms for the k-server problem, although the standard notation of T-theory was not used at the time of their creation; A summary of the k-server problem, and some important concepts of T-theory, are given. A number of known k-server results are restated using the established terminology of T-theory. Included is a 3-competitiveness proof, using T-theory, for the HARMONIC algorithm for two servers, which was presented in a paper by Larmore and Oravec [71]; Previously, the Knowledge …

Buffer Allocation In Message Passing Systems: An Implementation For Mpi, Jeffrey Sampson Jan 2007

Buffer Allocation In Message Passing Systems: An Implementation For Mpi, Jeffrey Sampson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Message passing applications that perform asynchronous communication need sufficient buffer space to hold all undelivered messages, or else the applications may deadlock. Determining the minimum amount of buffer space an application needs is called the Buffer Allocation Problem, and has been shown to be intractable [BPW]. However, an epoch based polynomial-time algorithm that approximates the Buffer Allocation Problem has been proposed by Pedersen et al. [PBS]. The algorithm partitions application executions into epochs and intersperses barrier synchronizations between them, thus limiting the number of message buffers necessary to ensure deadlock-freedom; In this thesis, we describe an implementation of the epoch …

Using Distance Education To Prepare School Administrators: Pitfalls And Effective Practice, Theodore J. Kowalski Jan 2007

Using Distance Education To Prepare School Administrators: Pitfalls And Effective Practice, Theodore J. Kowalski

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The employment of practitioners and the expansion of distance education courses have become controversial issues in the preparation of school administrators. In large measure, both actions have been condemned by many senior professors, primarily because they believe that college administrators have pursued them for economic reasons rather than for educational improvement. First, the merits of this perception are examined. Second, the pitfalls and promises of each issue are identified and then recommendations are made for improving practice. The potentialities of involving practitioners in professional preparation and making pre-service and in-service education more accessible via distance education will not be realized …

Using Guidelines To Support Quality Moderation Of Focus Group Interviews, Thomas M. Archer Jan 2007

Using Guidelines To Support Quality Moderation Of Focus Group Interviews, Thomas M. Archer

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

A Focus Group Interview (FGI) involves 6-9 people guided through a pre-thought line of questioning for 1-2 hours by a trained Moderator. The Moderator gives participants the opportunity to express ideas, thoughts, and views. This is a robust qualitative data collection method IF there is a skilled FGI Moderator. The Moderator sets the tone, delivers a high quality introduction, makes the discussants feel trusting, while at the same time managing a set of unstructured questions discussed by a mix of personalities within a relatively short time. The Moderators’ Code is a set of ten guidelines for moderating successful FGIs.

Preservice Teachers’ Knowledge Of Instructional Scaffolding For Writing Instruction, Sharan A. Gibson Jan 2007

Preservice Teachers’ Knowledge Of Instructional Scaffolding For Writing Instruction, Sharan A. Gibson

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This study reports on an analysis of preservice teachers’ dialogue journal entries for evidence of ways in which teachers develop conceptual understanding for writing instruction. Teachers’ propositional statements were identified and coded at a specific level for three themes: (1) level of instructional scaffolding, (2) focus of proposed instruction, and (3) hierarchical levels of language. The study identified a set of dilemmas faced by teachers as they developed pedagogical content knowledge for writing instruction, centered on participants’ assumptions regarding a direct, causal relationship between the provision of models for effective writing and the improvement of students’ expertise for writing.

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Built-In Self-Test (BIST) is a method of designing and creating an electronic chip or an electronic system that can self test for correct functionality and ensure no manufacturing defects. The reason for analog BIST is the testing of analog parts of analog and mixed-signal ICs is a costly process that traditionally requires the use of expensive high-end automatic test equipment. Due to the nature of the testing and length of the testing process, an efficient analog BIST scheme is in high demand for the ever increasing complexity of analog and mixed-signal circuits. This thesis presents a BIST scheme for generation …
