Several of the stories within the collection take their premise from actual news headlines. To lend cohesion to the collection, multiple stories contain one or more reappearing characters.

Improving Cooperation In P2p Networks: A Social Network Approach, Victor Ponce Jan 2007

Improving Cooperation In P2p Networks: A Social Network Approach, Victor Ponce

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Due to the dynamic nature of P2P systems, it is impossible to keep an accurate history of the transactions that take place while avoiding security attacks such as whitewashing and collusion, and abuse such as freeriding . This is why it is important to develop a mechanism that rewards cooperative peers and punishes misbehaving peers. Modeling P2P networks as social structures can allow incentive mechanisms to be used that prevent the negative behaviors mentioned. In this thesis, we extend a social network algorithm to include credit transfer between peers in order to reduce the path length of queries. We also …

An analytical investigation was conducted to evaluate the geotechnical safety and stability of MSW landfills constructed with significantly steepened slopes achieved through geosynthetic reinforcement. The primary motivation for this endeavor was to propose a new design/construction methodology for innovative expansion of landfill capacity. A 2-D plane strain linear elastic analysis was performed with ANSYS finite element software on full-scale MSW landfill structures (with and without geogrids), having slopes of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3. Both local and global factors of safety were determined employing the Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria, and compared with traditional solutions using the Bishop's Modified Method. It was found …

How Perceptions Of Justice, Children's Lifestyle Satisfaction, And Several Turnover Outcomes Relate To Repatriate And Spouse/Partner Compensation And Lifestyle Satisfaction, Stephanie J. Thomason Jan 2007

How Perceptions Of Justice, Children's Lifestyle Satisfaction, And Several Turnover Outcomes Relate To Repatriate And Spouse/Partner Compensation And Lifestyle Satisfaction, Stephanie J. Thomason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation analyzes how the reactions of repatriates and spouses/partners about their new lifestyle and compensation package upon repatriation relate to several repatriate turnover outcomes. U.S.-based multinational organizations often provide global assignees with an extensive benefit package, including such items as housing allowances, foreign-service premiums, tuition for international schools, and club memberships. Once the assignment is over, these additional benefits are necessarily terminated. Results of a qualitative analysis of 14 semi-structured interviews and a quantitative analysis of 37 U.S. repatriated executives and 34 spouses/partners of repatriated executives suggest that repatriate perceptions of distributive justice positively relate to all facets of …

A Phased Approach To Evaluate The Performance Of Handoff By Mobile Handsets, Arjumand Fatima Siddiqui Jan 2007

A Phased Approach To Evaluate The Performance Of Handoff By Mobile Handsets, Arjumand Fatima Siddiqui

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The ever increasing demand for capacity in wireless cellular networks is resolved by decreasing the size of the cells. The smaller cells created inside large cells are called microcells and they cover smaller and dense areas. As a result of this, the mobile device ends up changing the base stations or performing handover at a much higher rate. To maintain the reliability and quality of the call, it is obligatory to ascertain that the handover is performed at a proper location. If the handover is delayed or the mobile handset drags its base station, it is more probable that either …

A Study On Random Sum Statistics: Application To Wireless Network Performance Analysis, Suwat Pattaramalai Jan 2007

A Study On Random Sum Statistics: Application To Wireless Network Performance Analysis, Suwat Pattaramalai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The statistics of random sum is studied and used to evaluate performance metrics in wireless networks. Pertinent wireless network performance measures such as call completion/dropping probabilities and the average number of handovers usually require the probability distributions of the cell dwell time and call holding time; and are therefore not easy to evaluate. The proposed performance evaluation technique requires the moments of the cell dwell time and is given in terms of the Laplace transform function of the call holding time. Multimedia services that have Weibull and generalized gamma distributed call holding times are investigated. The proposed approximation method uses …

“We Are On The Circumference Of The Union, But The Union Suffers Nothing From Coldness In The Extremities” The Civil War In California, Cathleen Compton Wineinger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

When the Civil War began in 1861, the California Legislature pledged the state’s loyalty to the Union cause, and that allegiance never wavered. Location insulated the state from the major conflicts, and for most people, life remained relatively unchanged. Location also determined that California fought a different Civil War, faced a different enemy, and confronted challenges unique to its geography and position in the nation. California mines financed the Union war effort, and California Volunteers kept the peace throughout the West. The loyal population and the military monitored the activities of the large pro-southern minority, prevented any linkup with rebel …

An Analysis Of Securities Fraud Class Action Lawsuits: How Overvalued Equity And Related Factors Affect The Likelihood Of Dismissals And The Magnitude Of Settlements, Robert Houmes Jan 2007

An Analysis Of Securities Fraud Class Action Lawsuits: How Overvalued Equity And Related Factors Affect The Likelihood Of Dismissals And The Magnitude Of Settlements, Robert Houmes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Under Rule 10b-5 of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, investors are provided a cause of action for losses resulting from management's intentionally deceptive disclosure or non-disclosure of information. Since lawsuits are costly, managers should be motivated to avoid a securities fraud class action. Prior research argues that managers attempt to mitigate the adverse effects of class actions by preempting negative eamings surprises (Skinner 1994 ). However, this study argues that when a firm is overvalued, managers have incentives to avoid value reducing disclosure, which may lead to the violation of securities fraud laws. I investigate this assertion by testing …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study examined the coefficients of association (COAs) of Atlantic spotted dolphins, Stenellafrontalis, in the Bahamas that have been part of a long-term underwater observational study since 1985. First, three social units were designated based on analysis of association indices. The units appeared to coincide with clusters of individuals with similar ranges; however, there were insufficient ranging data to determine whether the social units were separate geographical units. The associations within and between these social units were analyzed to determine whether the units comprised separate communities. Results indicated that separate communities did not exist. Analysis of association indices of the …

This dissertation addresses the following questions and concerns related to the formation of the moral self: (1) The relationship between certain moral choices and a person's sense of personal or moral identity: specifically, how is it that certain choices, actions, character traits, or goods come to be interpreted as either constituting, or as being inseparable from, one's conscience, one's moral identity, or one's moral self? (2) The relationship between the conception of the good with which one identifies and the conception of the good of one's community of origin: how does one develop a conception of the good, how does …

Arabic Dialectology And The Influence Of Coptic On Egyptian Arabic, Mary Soliman Jan 2007

Arabic Dialectology And The Influence Of Coptic On Egyptian Arabic, Mary Soliman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The Arabic language includes many dialects that differ considerably from one another. In fact, they differ in almost every linguistic category : syntax, morphology, phonology, style and the lexicon. Written and spoken varieties also differ greatly , which is why Arabic is a prime example of diglossia within a single language. The dialects of Arabic were influenced by languages spoken previously in those regions. In addition, written Arabic has remained syntactically, morphologically and phonologically essentially unchanged for over a millennium. The spoken varieties, however, have evolved freely. This thesis will describe some of the differences that exist between these dialects …
